Knowledge of the Old Covenant should lead to greater appreciation of the New Covenant, the unity of Scripture, of the Savior, and lead you worship God more frequently. Listen as Trey walks through the first part of Hebrews 9 to better understand the differences between the Old and New Covenants.
There are many Christians today that hold unto the first covenant and the new covenant and treat them as if they are both of equal worth. Make no mistake, if you are trusting in the Old Covenant rather than the New Covenant than you are depending on a covenant that is completely obsolete and was not even given to you in the first place. If your faith is in Jesus Christ, you are a member of the New Covenant and you will reap all of the promises of God's new covenant due to priestly work of Jesus Christ on your behalf.
God swore the truth about the Messiah's Priesthood with an oath and further proclaimed that He would not change his mind. In other words, the Messiah's role as priest was, announced by God, sworn by God, and based upon God's immutability, has come to pass. What does this mean to us- A lot, as we find when we probe further into the priestly role of Christ.
We can trust that Jesus is the Messiah, the High Priest that God promised has come. He is not the average ordinary priest. He is the Son of God, who put on flesh and became the forever perfectly fitted priest to bring us into the presence of God. -As a sinner, who do you want to represent you to the perfectly holy and just God--Jews were debating if they should look to the Levitical Priest or Jesus the High Priest to represent them to God. However, most people today believe that they have no need for a priest, but will do just fine on their own. This happens when you have a low view of God's holiness and a high view of your own holiness. -For that person, look in the mirror. Are you holy- Are you innocent- Are you unstained by sin- Are you separate from sinners- Have you been exalted above the heavens by God- Do you have the perfect sacrifice to offer- And of course, the answer is, -No- to all of these questions. --All humanity is divided between those who have had their sins removed by the perfect Priestly work of Jesus Christ the Son of God, and those who will die with their sins. If you are a believer, I pray that your trust in your High Priest has been increased as we have looked at these passages. If your faith is in anything, anyone, or even yourself I hope you realize the utter unfitness of your plan of salvation. Trust in God today, and trust in His High Priest.
The priesthood of Jesus was extremely important to the author of Hebrews, at the time of writing there was an earthly temple in Jerusalem where sacrifices were being taken, and priest were still claiming to represent people to God. The vast majority of Jews had rejected Jesus and had returned to the earthly priest. By doing so, every time they went to the earthly priest, they were rejecting the Heavenly Priest. In essence they were saying that Jesus was a guilty sinner who deserved to die, and His life and work were worthless and meaningless. As the final High Priest Jesus has perfected and completed all that was in the Old Covenant, including the Law and the role of the Priests. What should our response be- We should rest and trust that our High Priest has perfectly accomplished the priestly role on our behalf.
Melchizedek is one of the most important figures in the entire Old Testament, yet he is only mentioned two times. He proves to be more important than even Abraham though we know almost nothing about him. Whether Melchizedek was human or a Christophany, his appearance illustrates the priestly work of Christ.
The Christian life is not easy, but the more you realize that you are anchored to heaven by the work of Jesus Christ the more stable you will become. The waves and wind of this life are turbulent, but even in the turbulence we must patiently persevere as we look forward to the full consummation of the promised blessings that are found in Jesus Christ.
There are people who think they are saved but are not. However, there are certainly people who are saved, and they need to rest in their salvation. As your assurance increases, may it produce more love for your fellow Christians.
Participation in the things of God and association with the people of God, does not equal salvation. This passage serves as a warning for all people to check their hearts to make sure that their surroundings do not serve to camouflage their heart of unbelief. If you are among the people of God, enjoying the blessings of God, you may still very well be on your way to hell. If that is you what should you do- The same thing that any unbeliever should do, repent of your sin and believe in Christ alone for your salvation.
This text contrasts what it means to be true and false believers or true and false disciples of Jesus Christ. We see throughout the Gospel of John that this particular idea of true and false belief or true and false discipleship is a common theme that takes place. This is very important to understanding John's purpose of writing the Gospel of John.
Though this specific dullness of hearing and spiritual infancy may not be our issue today, the core of this warning can still be applied to us. We need to be reminded as well, not to go backwards, not to keep drinking milk, but to press forward in our knowledge of God, putting away sin and pursuing righteousness.
Throughout the book of Hebrews there are constant comparisons to the Old Mosaic Covenant that God made with Israel and the New Covenant that God made through Jesus Christ with Jew and Gentile believers. Jesus is the fulfillment of the High Priestly position and the High Priestly role. Now, the author continues that comparison. First, he states how a High Priest comes to be. God chooses and appoints him. Second, he states that the purpose is of a High Priest -to act on behalf of men in relation to God.- Third, he gives the exact job description of a High Priest, -to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.- There is only one way to be rightly represented to God, and it is through His chosen, appointed, perfect, and eternal Great High Priest- Jesus Christ.
Through Christ, our High Priest, we have been perfectly represented to God, we reap the benefits, and now have confidence to go directly to God to receive mercy and grace. If Jesus is your High Priest, you have full access to mercy and grace because He has atoned for your sin. If Jesus is not your High Priest, you will receive no mercy and grace. Do you want to represent yourself to God- Or do you want the Great High Priest to represent you to God--As we continue to learn about Christ Priestly role, we are going to find that the New Covenant is better than the Old Covenant because The Priest is better- The Priest brings a better sacrifice- The Priest brings His sacrifice to a better place- and The Priest has perfectly represented us to God.
This is the message that divides all people into those who will receive His rest or His wrath. God sees through all hypocrisy. God sees you for exactly who you are. He knows who has not entered into His rest and will receive His wrath. Today, make sure that your Christianity is not just on the outside for others to see, but make sure that it flows from a heart that has and does confess, repent, and believe and rest in the gospel of Jesus Christ for salvation.
The Sabbath was a sign of the Mosaic Covenant between God and the Israelites, that covenant, and the sign that accompanied it are now obsolete. Moses, the exodus, the manna, the water, the promised land, the tabernacle, the Feasts, the New Moon festivals, and the Sabbaths were all shadows of what Christ would accomplish in the New Covenant. The New Covenant has now come, and it has been kept on your our behalf by Jesus Christ. He is the covenant maker, and the covenant keeper.
Will you enter into God's rest, or not- The good news, is that if you hear my voice, then it is not too late to hear His voice. If you are one who is being deceived, living in sin, expecting to get to heaven, then wake up, confess your sin, repent of your disobedience and believe in Jesus Christ for your salvation. If you are a believer, I hope you have found strength today as we have focused on the rest that you are in and will enter into through by grace, through faith, in Jesus Christ. If you want the to be in the place of God's rest, then you must be on the path to God's rest, and you must rely on the Person of God's rest- Jesus Christ.
It is wonderful to learn from example. Sometimes these can be positive Christian examples of the faith. The main emphasis of chapter 3 and 4 is to make sure that you, nor anyone traveling with you, be like the Israelites who did not make it to the Promised Land. -The author of Hebrews is revealing that the pattern of the Israelites leaving slavery and journeying to the place of rest was a physical example of a much higher spiritual reality that is repeated by every generation. God keeps His word, that goes for his promises for blessing and His promises of wrath. Those who remain in disobedience will not inherit the ultimate promised land.
The author of Hebrews labors the point of realizing who these people were that provoked God, sinned against God, and died without reaching the Promised Land. They were the people who we would think to be the least likely to rebel against God. So, it is with the people that the author of Hebrews is writing. What about you, are you with the people of God, but not a person of God- Follow the advice of the author of Hebrews---Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called -today,- that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.- - Hebrews 3-12-13
The same message of not hardening your heart, rebelling, provoking God to anger, receiving his wrath still remain just as applicable in 2020 as they did when Hebrews was written, Psalm 95 was written, and when the Israelites were being led by Moses. Different audiences from different generations, yet the same struggles. What do you do with a message like this- You heed the warning. Use it as a warning to not go back into the slavery of sin, press on- not just in the good times, but even through the difficult times. It is in the difficulties of life where hearts are most revealed.
Anytime we see the word -therefore- in Scripture, it is important to ask, -What is it there for-- The word is a link that connects one flow of thought to the next. What is the author linking- The points made regarding Jesus just mentioned in the previous chapter- That Jesus is the faithful and merciful High Priest who has destroyed Satan, delivered us from the slavery of the fear of death, propitiated for our sin, and sanctified those for whom He represented. If you are in Christ you are in that body of people who are referred to so far as the family of God, brothers, children of Abraham, those given. Therefore-what are we supposed to do with that information- Consider Jesus. This is a focusing of our mind upon the person and work of Jesus.
God the Son put on flesh, and perfectly represented us to God. He has conquered Satan and death on our behalf. A Christian is no longer a slave to sin, or a slave to the fear of death. The more you realize what Christ has done for you, the more the fear of death will diminish. We know that we go directly from this life to the blessed presence of God, because Jesus has represented us perfectly. He is our High Priest who appeases the wrath of God on our behalf.
Salvation of sinners is a supernatural work of the Triune God. Salvation is also a work of God, and God alone, in which He receives all of the glory. We are sinners who are saved by the pure grace of God. Throughout history God has revealed His character and given examples of His justice, mercy, and salvation. All of which point to the ultimate salvation that He has provided in Jesus Christ. Christ takes our sin, receives the penalty for it, and makes us holy by his removal of our sin, and providing righteousness on our behalf. Therefore, we are in the family of God, not based upon what we have done, but based upon the one who represented us. He suffered in our place, so that we might receive the blessings of His perfect obedience.
