Why would the couple in their 50’s have such a different outlook to the man in his 30’s? It’s hard to be a successful investor unless you’re an optimist. Firstly, if everyone does well, you’re likely to do better as an investor. And if you understand everyone is doing better, and that we have always gotten better, you’re less likely to be agonising over someone huffing and puffing about the next crash. When I hear crash talk I often think of the saying, a broken clock is right twice a day.

People with money in the bank are getting the lowest rates of interest since the 1960s and those rates could still fall further, it is warned. According to Newsroom's Business Editor Nikki Mandow, more than a third of the money New Zealanders have in our Aussie-owned banks is earning us no interest - or virtually none. And it’s costing us somewhere between $400 million and $900 million a year in lost interest - depending on how you crunch the numbers. The banks know this - but it’s one of the reasons they are so very profitable in New Zealand.

According to KPMG's Head of Financial Services John Kensington, New Zealanders need advice from financial advisers to improve complex investment and retirement outcomes but face an enormous obstacle – a lack of trust. With the Australian Royal Commission fresh in all our minds, it’s not just the profession who suffer from bad advisers, vertical integration and the associated conflicts of interest, it trickles down to clients who need financial guidance, but have no idea who to trust.

Do you want to know a secret?A big part of the financial services industry has a vested interest in convincing you that the key to a successful investment experience is staying busy.Thumb through an investment magazine and you find any number of ads for trading software, courses in options trading, chart packs and newsletters that promise individual alerts on hundreds of companies. Now some people seem to actually enjoy poring over price trends and fundamental analysis or watching moving averages on stock charts. But most of the population simply have better things to do with their time.Where you stand in the debate about staying "busy" by thinking like a trader often depends on whether you see investment as the means to an end or as an end in itself!

The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) has sounded the alarm bells for the second time in two months over insurance companies providing soft commissions to financial advisers. The main form of remuneration for financial advisers who give advice on life and health insurance in New Zealand is commission. The commissions paid by insurers to advisers include monetary and non-monetary benefits. The use of non-monetary commissions, also known as soft commissions, is the concern here.Soft commissions are incentives or benefits such as gifts, prizes, trips, professional development such as training or software, events including conferences, sponsorships, payment of membership fees and loan to advisers. In the recent FMA report released last week showed nine life and health insurance companies spent $34 million over the past three years on soft commissions. It is very important to have an authorised financial adviser (AFA) by your side who is obliged to place the interests of their clients first.Stewart Group is an independent financial advisory business and introduced a "no soft commission" policy in 2003, which means we work for our clients' interest, not those of an insurance company.
