What great comfort we should take in the knowledge that God our King HAS come-and IS coming. He HAS come, -righteous and having salvation, -humble and mounted on a donkey,- and He IS coming as an avenging warrior who will one day destroy all His enemies and ours. The result will be FREEDOM for His people and PEACE to the nations. -On that day the Lord their God will save them, as the flock of his people- for like the jewels of a crown they shall shine on his land.-
We are so prone to performing certain rituals and works, thinking that we are doing them in obedience to the Lord. Through Zechariah, the Lord pointed out out that their religion, even during 70 years in exile, bore the marks of an external facade. This is the mindset of the world - that carrying out things with an outward adherence to the law is the same thing as true obedience. We are reminded in this passage that God calls us to true religion - true obedience from a right heart, and that it will show itself with certain marks that we need to look for in our lives and worship.
