This is the audio only companion to my YouTube channel which features Q&A discussions about dog training, behavior management, sport training, and learning theory; as well as reflections on mistakes (and corrective measures) I've made as a trainer and dog owner.

Before getting a dog and before going down the road of training, it's important to ask yourself what expectations you have? Are you setting the bar high enough? It's important to stay realistic and realize that it's okay to change and adapt your goals and expectations over time.
Getting a dog is a highly personalized choice. However, it is a also a selfish choice that shouldn't be made on an emotional basis. There are some very practical considerations to take into account when considering what type of dog you should get; including: age, maturity, activity level, maintenance / grooming needs, size / weight, and more.

Just use an e-collar (electric collar) to fix everything! Right? Wrong! This is particularly true of dogs who are already struggling with anxiety and fear and have an overwhelming amount of stimulation already. You do not want to add more stimulation to a dog who is already having an adverse response (whining, barking , fleeing, biting, urinating) the the current level of stimulation in that situation.

Pay attention to your environment, your dog's body language, and the body language of other dogs. Have boundaries for your your dog and expectations of other dogs. Stand firm and be your dog's advocate. It is NOT okay to pet random dogs in public. and it is unrealistic if someone tries to sell you the idea that you can have 100% obedience with every dog in every situation under every circumstance. You MUST be responsible for and control your animal and be steadfast when dealing with others' animals.
