It is difficult. Moving in the same direction over a period of time to see change in our lives is not easy. We continue to see how trust in Jesus grows as we talk about Private Disciplines.
When we get to use what little resources we have available to make a difference in someone's life it seems to make a difference in our life as well. Hear about how God grows our faith when we offer up what we have to him.
We are answering the question, how does our trust in Jesus grow? Hear how committed Jesus was to having his teaching applied by those that follow him, and this is good news for everyone.
One question I get as a pastor from time to time is, 'how do I ensure my faith grows?' Well, we are starting a 6-week series that is going to look at this question. It will be a chance to see how as a church we ensure that all who are a part of our community, from new to seasoned followers of Jesus, grow in their faith.
This week, we will continue our conversation about parenting. At the heart of every transgression, a relationship has been damaged. So, how can we coach our kids in the art of building and repairing relational bridges?

We’ve been “grounded.” Flights are opening up now though and people are beginning to travel, even if schedules are a bit disrupted with staffing shortages and reschedules. One flight that is certain to fly is the one at the end of our lives. Imagine, for a minute, that our journey from this life to eternity is like taking a flight. Of course, you can’t fly without a ticket. And, you need to pass through security screening before you get on the plane. You just can’t take everything with you. What will the final flight be like? What will we be able to take with us? Join us this week at LBC to consider our final flight….

One of the most difficult things to do is keep our hearts open when we've been treated badly in life. The temptation and possibly the "normal" way to respond is to shut down, and to hold things against people. It's fully understandable that that is the way we respond. It is quite unusual and quite powerful when a person is able to recover from a difficult experience, process the pain they have felt, and move on from the situation without being stuck back in the experience.
I don't think there is any way we can insulate ourselves from all difficulties. Some people experience greater difficulties and injustice than others. But it is always amazing to see someone move through their struggles.
Jesus of course, encourages us to move beyond our struggles. Trusting God again, forgiving those who have hurt us, and putting the pieces of our lives back together - even if it takes a while, is a journey that God encourages us to take. And when we do, new possibilities open up for us.
Let's keep taking steps on the journey.
How do you feel and what comes to mind when someone mentions spending quality time with God? You are not alone if you have ever felt inadequate when it comes to time with God!
This week we will take a fresh look at what it might mean to experience life giving time with God. There are things we can learn from the old traditions of generations past. Things we can learn from the company of others. And so much we can learn from the stories of Jesus’ life and our own Holy Spirit facilitated experience with him.

Perhaps one of the most precious and powerful gifts we can give another person it to really listen to them, to listen with quiet, fascinated attention, with our whole being, fully present (Kay Lindahl).
Most of us know how good it feels when we are really listened to and most of us know how hard it is to listen well to another person. Sitting with another person as they tell their story takes a willingness to slow down and give our time; it takes the self-discipline of quieting our own voice, letting go of expectations, judgments and defensiveness.
But what a difference it can make!
The way Jesus interacted with people and especially those who were vulnerable in some way, gives us a glimpse into both the transforming power of sitting with others in their experiences of life and the way to go about it. His friend John described Jesus as full of grace and truth and it is with grace that Jesus stepped into all of his relationships. Grace then became a pathway along which people were invited to travel towards truths that changed their lives. Join us on Sunday as we think about listening to others intentionally, deeply, courageously and compassionately reflecting the generous grace of Jesus.
Lot had built a house in Sodom, a notoriously difficult neighbourhood. Abraham was concerned for his relative. One day, God came to Abraham and was intent on determining if Sodom really was a bad a place as everyone had said. Abraham became concerned and feared for Lot’s safety. So, Abraham began a conversation with God…what if there are 50 righteous people in the town – will you spare it? Yes. 40? Yes. 30,20, 10? Yes, God would spare the town if even a few people were righteous. The conversation ends. Abraham has let God know about his concern for his relatives.
We read that, later on, Sodom is destroyed. Abraham stands on the hill nearby and sees the smoke rising.
What has happened to Lot? Is he safe?
The story ends with the words, “When God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and brought Lot out of the catastrophe.”
The end of the story, despite the difficulties, is actually hopeful.
And it lets us know, whatever situation our relatives are in, our prayers make a difference.
Let’s continue to pray for those we love, particularly if they’re living in difficult circumstances.

This week we are looking at love. Josh has a question that defined Christianity in the past. And, if we allow it to, can define us again in the 21st Century.
Someone said that joy, the way Jesus intends we experience it, is not so much the giddiness that goes away when circumstances are tough, as it is the ballast that keeps a ship stable and upright in the water even in a storm.
In many cultures the word Peace means the absence of war. But the Peace we celebrate in the Advent season is about more than that. Advent Peace takes what is broken and restores it. We look at Peace (Shalom) in the Old Testament and Peace (Eirene) in the New Testament to see just what true peace is.
This Sunday sees the start of the Advent Season when we prepare for Christmas Day through the lenses of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.
These things have taken a bit of a hit this year for many people. Mark McCrindle, a well know Australian social researcher conducted a survey recently that showed that 56% of Australians say they are struggling to find any joy, anything good in 2020. The same survey showed 40% of Aussies say they have suffered mental health issues this year that will have a long term negative impact on them – peace is hard to find! And for some hope is all but gone with 67% of Australians saying they are coming to Christmas time actively worried about the future.
But this is the first Sunday of Advent, in spite of a pandemic, even though we have had heartache this year, Christmas is coming and as people have done for hundreds and hundreds of years we have the opportunity to deliberately take some time to consider how we find hope that will see us through to the end of 2020 and into all our tomorrows.
This hope has to do with a baby.
Nick preaches on ‘Living Water’, from the incredible story of the women at the well in John chapter 4; about our need to be constantly sustained, transformed, and filled by the Living Water freely offered by Jesus Christ to all.
In this message Karen talks about what happens when we pray and there is no response. The Psalms in the bible include many prayers of lament but one of them (Psalm 88) stands out because it ends without the characteristic return to hope. Some of us will feel uncomfortable reading this prayer. It is extreme and urgent and it is not redeemed like so many of the other lament psalms are by a last verse return to something hopeful; something that suggests all will be well. But the thing is, this prayer is life for some. Some of us will read it and think, “At last! Someone is praying my prayer! That’s just how I felt when...”
When you and I recognise nature worshipping God and are moved to do the same we are experiencing prayer as something physical; when we recognise a pleasant smell from childhood and thank God for love; when we hold another’s hand and are moved to thank God for comfort; when we hear a new born cry and remember the gift of life; when we taste good food and feel gratitude for all we have – we are experiencing prayer as something physical - something sacramental - something tangible that imparts or is a symbol of God’s grace.
This week Karen thinks about prayer as calling on the name of Jesus and considers the unexpected that is often the outcome as we find ourselves in unlikely places with unlikely people living uncommonly interesting and sometimes uncomfortable lives!
We start a new series about prayer which we often experience as something quite mysterious and incomprehensible! Sometimes prayer feels like sitting in the tangible presence of God and other times it feels like calling out to an empty sky “Hello? Is anybody there?”
This message looks at the pattern and point of prayer as groaning.

Our attention has the power to build others up or let them down. In this Father’s Day message Josh will be looking at how to use our attention well.
Karen considers Grace as a road marker on the map we are drawing to help us navigate life well in the everyday. Grace is a small enough word and it makes a pretty name, but when it comes to matters of faith the concept of Grace can be difficult to nail down. Perhaps Grace is best described as freedom from what holds us down and being bound to step up to what is good.
What is one thing that never goes out of style? Hear Josh explore how money and having a healthy heart can lead to joy, happiness, and peace.
This week Karen talks about friendships and what values will help us to live in healthy connection with other people in the in-between space we find ourselves in. In-between the Genesis story of the breaking down of relationships and the Revelation story of healed relationship for all people and all nations, we will look at the values of faithfulness, service, forgiveness and the gift of time, based on the foundational premise that each one of us is wonderfully made in the image of God.
Karen adds another marker to our road map for living life in the everyday according to the words, the works and the ways of Jesus - the marker of Wisdom. We probably all recognise wisdom when we see it but what is wisdom and how do we get it?
The Stuff of Life is a series focusing on living life in the everyday from the perspective of the Christian faith worldview. Over the next few weeks we will put together a road map for living faithfully with Jesus in our everyday life. It won’t have every day mapped out with GPS precise coordinates but we will end up with a map that clearly shows good pathways we can navigate along.
Choosing a seat can be a very strategic thing and there are two components that are common to sitters everywhere; we need a reason to sit and we need a place to sit. Karen shares two Bible stories that feature people taking a seat and to think about the implications of what they choose for our lives.
A wedding in the Palestinian village of Cana was just the sort of event Jesus was known to love, writes Rachel Held Evans. An event “packed with eating and drinking, music and laughter, the scent of roast lamb mingling with the perfume of flower garlands, the sweet taste of pomegranate, raisins, dates, and honey, the roar of animated conversation between family and friends…” Karen shares why Jesus was at this particular wedding.
