In today’s episode, we sit down with Paster Keith Jossell. In the wake of all the public cases of legal and codified injustice (Julius remaining in prison, Rittenhouse acquittal, the despicable remarks made about Ahmaud Arbery by the McMichaels Defense Team, etc), where do we go from here? So many are distraught. So many are disillusioned. Can we ever get to the place that Dr. King wrote about in the last book, "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community"?

Pastor Keith is a Justice seeker, connecting to the hope in marginalized people, to inspire the transformation of personal identities, families, and communities. Keith is the National Prayer Forum Director for the Justice for Julius Coalition and the Spiritual Advisor for innocent and now reclassified death row inmate Julius Darius Jones. Often times in the black community, many think that being a professional athlete is not only one of the greatest things to achieve, but seen as one of the only ways out of unfortunate circumstances. We see so many of our youth who want to play sports, but don't know or understand what comes with being a pro-baller to include the dedication and disappointments. In the black community, we really just don't talk about death and hardly ever prepare for the transition of assets from one generation to the next. These conversations are often not had until after our loved ones have passed on and we start trying to unravel the financial life of the deceased either in a funeral home or via probate court. While we all know the stress that losing a loved one puts on a family, just imagine the drama that transpires after Big Mama is gone and her home and assets need to be equitably distributed throughout her 12+ descendants. While this sounds like the start of a black BET Network movie, this is the reality that many of us face.

The Association of Black Estate Planning Professionals notes that "Black Americans today own little ⎯ if any ⎯ of America’s land, produce little if any of the country’s resources, and possess negligible amounts of this nation’s immense wealth. Yet Black Americans still project an aspiration based on blind faith in the American Dream". Much of our community's current lack of wealth is due in large part to how we plan for death versus funerals. So the Amerikan Therapy team sits down with some savvy legal and insurance experts to help us better understand how to ensure the effective passing on of generational wealth via legal, tax, and insurance structures.

The Amerikan Therapy team is always seeking to learn new ways to improve the quality of our mental health, through both traditional and unconventional modalities. We sit down with Dr. Rennes Toussaint-Keshinro (Dr. Rennes) to learn about how Chiropractic Science connects to our overall mental wellbeing. Dr. Rennes is affectionately known as the dancing Chiropractor on social media and her warm demeanor and commitment to improving the wellness of her community shines through in this interview. She shares how many of our muscular aches and pains are often the residue of untreated emotional traumas and mental health challenges.

Chiropractic science is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health.

Dr. Rennes Toussaint-Keshinro is a Doctor of Chiropractic, mental wellness coach, and mental health advocate. Her journey includes her migration to the US at age 13 and struggling to find her identity which eventually led her on a three-year self-discovery journey through South America. In the last 6 years she has practiced in 3 different countries but today what excites her the most is her Dance for Mental Health movement. Dance for Mental Health encourages women who are suffering in silence to find their identity, their voice, and to take back their power. She understands the connection of the physical and mental body and why it should not be looked at separately. Her goal is to inform, educate, and build awareness about mental health, especially in the black community. She is also the owner of Sign of Strength LLC, a mental health awareness shop.

Her advocacy with the National Alliance on Mental Illness - New York (NAMI-NYC) is in support of integrating mental health education in the educational system.

Free, 24/7, confidential.

This year has been extremely difficult for all of us. Let's face it, even those of us that are actively in therapy and seeking treatment for our mental health challenges, are struggling. The combination of social isolation and racial trauma has all of us overwhelmed. In this time of difficulty, it is important that Amerikan Therapy talk about suicide prevention. Many of us are struggling in ways that may even have us contemplating the end of our own lives. Regardless if you are having persistent thoughts of taking your own life, or you find these thoughts just creeping into your consciousness and then going away, please seek professional help immediately. Suicide is a hard topic to discuss for any of us, but it's especially taboo in the black community. Whether we know it or not, it is highly likely that someone close to us has had suicidal ideations and/or made an attempt on their life. While we don't talk about suicide, it is still very present within the black community.

Warning signs aren't always obvious, and they may vary from person to person. Some people make their intentions clear, while others keep suicidal thoughts and feelings secret. Suicide warning signs or suicidal thoughts include:

  • Talking about suicide — for example, making statements such as "I'm going to kill myself," "I wish I were dead" or "I wish I hadn't been born"
  • Getting the means to take your own life, such as buying a gun or stockpiling pills
  • Withdrawing from social contact and wanting to be left alone
  • Having mood swings, such as being emotionally high one day and deeply discouraged the next
  • Being preoccupied with death, dying or violence
  • Feeling trapped or hopeless about a situation
  • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
  • Changing the normal routine, including eating or sleeping patterns
  • Doing risky or self-destructive things, such as using drugs or driving recklessly
  • Giving away belongings or getting affairs in order when there's no other logical explanation for doing this
  • Saying goodbye to people as if they won't be seen again
  • Developing personality changes or being severely anxious or agitated, particularly when experiencing some of the warning signs listed above

Amerikan Therapy sits down with Topeka K. Sam, a vibrant and ardent freedom fighter who works to improve the humane treatment of women currently within the justice system, specifically those under Federal incarceration. Topeka knows first hand what these women go through as a former federal inmate.

While in Federal Prison, Topeka K. Sam witnessed firsthand the epidemic and disparity of incarceration on women, more specifically women of color. She felt the urgency to bring the faces and voices of women in prison to the public in order to bring awareness to women’s incarceration and post-incarceration issues in order to change the criminal legal system.

After her release in 2015 and in response to what she saw and learned in prison, Topeka created The Ladies of Hope Ministries (The LOHM) an organization whose mission is to help disenfranchised and marginalized women transition back into society through education, entrepreneurship, spiritual empowerment, and advocacy. With Vanee Sykes, Topeka developed the vision for Hope House NYC while they were incarcerated. Hope House NYC is a safe housing space for formerly incarcerated women located in the Castle Hill neighborhood of the Bronx.

Topeka K. Sam is a ‘2017 Soros Justice Fellowship‘ recipient. Her fellowship, The Probation and Parole Accountability Project focuses on the broken and arbitrary probation and parole systems. Her op-ed, It’s Time to Overhaul America’s Broken Probation and Parole Systems, was published widely. Sam is a ‘2015 Beyond the Bars Fellow‘ and a ‘2016 Justice in Education Scholar‘ both at Columbia University.

In early December, in partnership with Grammy-winner and activist John Legend’s FREE AMERICA, Bank of America, and New Profit, Topeka was named as one of eight people to the first cohort of Unlocked Futures, an accelerator for social innovators who have been impacted directly by the criminal justice system.

Amerikan Therapy sits down with Dr. Ivory A. Toldson, the author of "No BS (Bad Stats): Black People Need People Who Believe in Black People Enough Not to Believe Every Bad Thing They Hear about Black People". This episode is an eye-opener on how we often view the black community based on BS, rather than factual and contextualized information. The use of BS helps to perpetuate racist and bigoted views of black inferiority.

What if everything you thought you knew about Black people generally, and educating Black children specifically, was based on BS (bad stats)? We often hear things like, “Black boys are a dying breed,” “There are more Black men in prison than college,” “Black children fail because single mothers raise them,” and “Black students don’t read.” In No BS, Ivory A. Toldson uses data analysis, anecdotes, and powerful commentary to dispel common myths and challenge conventional beliefs about educating Black children. With provocative, engaging, and at times humorous prose, Toldson teaches educators, parents, advocates, and students how to avoid BS, raise expectations, and create an educational agenda for Black children that is based on good data, thoughtful analysis, and compassion. No BS helps people understand why Black people need people who believe in Black people enough not to believe every bad thing they hear about Black people.

Dr. Ivory A. Toldson, Ph.D., is a professor of Counseling Psychology at Howard University, the president of Quality Education for Minorities, the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Negro Education, and executive editor of the Journal of Policy Analysis and Research, published by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc.

June is Pride Month and while we can't celebrate like want to due to the pandemic, we can continue having amazing and thought-provoking discussions. The Amerikan Therapy team sits down with two powerhouses in the black LGBTQ+ advocacy space to talk about how the revolution and resistance this time around must openly embrace our queer family. We learn how Black LGBTQ+ advocates have always stood up for the liberation of black peoples everywhere, even when their own community may not have embraced them. The intercommunity discrimination against LGBTQ+ members of the black community is a nuance tail illustrating how systems of oppression function at all levels. This show illustrates the Amerikan Therapy team's dedication to continuing to grow our own understanding and definition of what black liberation looks like in all its forms.

The Georgetown Pivot Program is a new, non-credit-bearing certificate in business and entrepreneurship created specifically for formerly incarcerated individuals. Designed in partnership with the DC Department of Employment Services and delivered by Georgetown faculty, the Pivot Program is a one-year transition and re-entry program centered on a blend of academic work and supported employment.

Pivot Program fellowships are full-time commitments. Approximately half of their time is spent in class and training at Georgetown’s downtown campus and the Georgetown Venture Lab at WeWork White House, and half in internships. At the end of the academic year, fellows choose between one of two transition phase tracks: incubation or employment. Those opting to create their own business are provided with a workspace, business coaching, legal support, and access to resources; those seeking permanent employment are placed in off-campus internships with local employers. For the duration of the program, Pivot Program Fellows receive a weekly internship stipend from the D.C. Department of Employment Services (DOES), providing a strong incentive to complete the program.

The principal goal is employment readiness – and the program is designed to prepare participants for a range of post-program outcomes: sustainable employment, owning and operating their own businesses, and/or continuing their education. The curriculum provides both training in the fundamentals of business and entrepreneurship, as well as general knowledge and liberal arts courses (literature, economics, philosophy, and civic engagement). The program also includes modules on professional and life skills, such as personal finance, career planning, business communications and business etiquette, public speaking, self-advocacy, and conflict resolution.

The emphasis on entrepreneurship is intentional – while fellows are not required to start a business, they are taught how to adopt and apply an entrepreneurial mindset and to feel a greater sense of empowerment. We believe this increased confidence will result in a more positive career trajectory and an enhanced ability to respond to social and regulatory barriers.

The Amerikan Therapy team sits down with Gerald A Griggs, Esq. to discuss the most recent killings of unarmed black people in America, most notably Auhmed Aubrey and Breonna Taylor. These cases are two of so many unarmed black people who have been murdered at the hands of whites in the last 8 years since the brutal murder of Trayvon Martin in 2012.

Living while black has never seemed so dangerous for so many. The mere threat of calling the police on a black person in America is a life and death situation in most cases. Given the statistics and the heightened racial tension in the country, the team sits down with a brilliant legal scholar and litigator to understand where do we go from here. How do we take action to prevent these types of cases from happening in the future? What can every black person in America do to protect themselves and their family? What are our constitutional rights and what laws do we need to push our State and Federal legislatures to enact?

This interview is a masterclass on how to use the principles of Martin and Malcolm to demand justice and live free. This is truly a must listen to episode for all.

The Amerikan Therapy team takes a brave new step and announces a major change in the show. While we will ALWAYS bring a uniquely black perspective, because that's just what we are, we have decided to expand our show to include "ALL" people. We are taking this important step because we see that our reach goes well outside of our own community and there is a need for our voices across the entirety of the mental health landscape. Knowing that we are bringing our brand of "Black Girl Magic" to help inspire healing for all peoples means we are going to go even "harder in the paint". That also means we are expanding the scope of our guests and topics. Now that said, America's persistent problem of racism will always be on our menu and at the forefront of our show. IF we can't speak about it and bring it out of the dark, then we certainly can't heal it.

So this week's episode of Amerikan Therapy brought some new "white" voices to our virtual therapist couch. We connected with two woke white women (they hate that term by the way) to discuss being a white ally for social and racial justice. We talk about Karen and them and even get into what white people can do to begin their own healing. This is the first of many cross-community conversations. We know it wasn't perfect, but we think we are all trying to find our way in this work. We recognize that these are very difficult conversations and appreciate you all as listeners and guests for continuing to ride hard for us.

Her Christian faith compelled her to begin an active anti-racism journey, where she strives to listen to, amplify, and financially support the wisdom from black, indigenous, and people of color communities while confronting racism in her own life. She is determined to make mistakes and show up anyway.

Against doctors’ predictions, Charita Cole Brown has been living in bipolar I recovery for more than twenty-five years. The Amerikan Therapy team has a virtual sit down with Charita to understand how she defied the verdict given to her by doctors over 30 years ago regarding her Bipolar I diagnosis. Her life story and memoir represent an inspirational story of how tribe and self-acceptance have allowed Charita to live a full and impactful life while managing life with a serious mental disorder.

Charita Cole Brown was diagnosed with a severe form of bipolar disorder while finishing her final semester as an English major at Wesleyan University. Doctors predicted she would never lead a “normal” life. Despite that pessimistic prognosis and because she sought treatment, Charita went on to marry, raise a family, earn a master's degree in teaching and enjoy a fulfilling career in education. Her powerful story is chronicled in her award-winning debut book, Defying the Verdict: My Bipolar Life (Curbside Splendor Publishing, 2018).

Bipolar disorder (formerly known as manic depression) is highly treatable. However, of the estimated 5.7 million Americans living with the disorder, over 50% won't seek treatment. The fact that the US suicide rate for people who have bipolar disorder is 12 times higher than that of the general population is even more sobering.

Charita Cole Brown earned a BA in English from Wesleyan University and an MAT in Early Childhood Education from Towson University in Maryland. A retired educator, she is now a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Maryland Board of Directors and is also active in the local affiliate, NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore.

Brown’s mission is to help cure mental healthcare stigma by sharing her story. She has given keynote presentations for the Morgan State University Psychology Department and the Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honor Society.

Besides her active involvement in mental health education, she currently manages assisted living style care for her elderly parents and serves on the Baltimore City Women's Commission.

In the black community, we just don't talk about raising children that are differently-abled, yet we all are connected to someone doing just that. We don't share our business and let folks know the challenges that we are facing. It's just not acceptable. In this episode, the Amerikan Therapy team is joined by two black mothers and social justice workers on the front line of raising awareness about being black and autistic. Both ladies are boldly raising children with autism and working as advocates to amplify the voices of the black autistic community.

Roy Wood Jr’s comedy has entertained millions across stage, television, and radio. Roy joined “The Best F#@ing News Team” in 2015 as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s Emmy-nominated hit series, “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.” In 2017, he was named the new host of Comedy Central’s storytelling series, “This is Not Happening,” which will launch the fifth season next year. His first Comedy Central one-hour stand-up special, “Father Figure,” premiered in 2017 along with an extended uncensored album of the same name released by Comedy Central Records. His second Comedy Central one-hour stand-up special, “Roy Wood Jr.: No One Loves You,” will premiere at the beginning of 2019 on January 25th.

Entertainment Weekly has described the thought-provoking comedy of Roy Wood Jr. as “charismatic crankiness.” Prior to “The Daily Show,” Wood co-starred for two seasons season on TBS’ “Sullivan & Son,” playing the loving drinking buddy of star Steve Byrne, who has returned to Pittsburgh to run the family bar.

Wood, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, began his comedy career in 1999 at the age of 19 while attending Florida A&M University. In October 2006, Wood made his network television debut on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” In 2008, he appeared on HBO’s historic “Def Comedy Jam” and was later selected by America as one of the top three finalists on “Last Comic Standing” on NBC. Wood has appeared on “The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” TBS’ “Conan,” “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” He also performed for the troops on USO tours to Guam and The Philippines.

Wood appeared at the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in the New Faces Showcase, an appearance that led the Hollywood Reporter to call Roy a "standout". He has also been a regular contributor to ESPN’s Sports Nation. His first full comedy CD, 'Things I Think, I Think,' was released in 2013.

AFFION CROCKETT is one of the most versatile entertainers around, as an accomplished actor, writer, dancer, rapper, comedian, music producer, and director – his YouTube videos have become an internet sensation. Affion began his career as a dancer at age 10, winning breaking and popping contests with his older brother. Later on, he honed his impression skills by imitating anyone from his mother’s West Indian dialect or his schoolteacher’s southern drawl to the Scarface’s choppy Cuban accent. Soon after, Affion combined his dance and impressionist talents to develop his stand up act. After graduating from Fayetteville State University, with a bachelor’s degree in business, Affion set his sights on the entertainment industry.

Affion was introduced to the world on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, demonstrating his crystal clear impressions and physical comedy, for which he was labeled the next Jim Carrey. He was also the break out star on MTV’s ‘Wild’n Out’ with Nick Cannon. He has appeared on ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ ‘black-ish’, ‘The Comedians’ with Billy Crystal, and ‘The Guest Book’. Crockett also co-starred in the films, ‘Dance Flick’ with the Wayans Brothers, ‘Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins’ with Martin Lawrence, ‘Soul Men’ with Samuel L. Jackson and the late Bernie Mac, ‘A Haunted House’ parts 1 & 2, ’50 Shades of Black’ alongside Marlon Wayans, and ‘The Wedding Ringer’ with Kevin Hart.

Affion is also best known for his comedy niche with online sketch/parody videos garnering over 50 million views on YouTube. This caught the attention of Hip-Hop Mogul, Russell Simmons and resulted in the launch of an original online comedy series titled ‘Hustles with Russells’ starring the two. This also sparked multiple viral commercial campaigns. For one commercial Affion starred alongside Dr. Dre, and Lebron James, as well as one for Jay-Z’s clothing line Rocawear, where Affion impersonates Jay-Z and the French twin dancers Les Twins.
Affion starred in and executive produced his own sketch comedy show for FOX called ‘In the Flow with Affion Crockett,’ which was also executive produced by Jamie Foxx. The series revealed a fresh take on pop culture with spoofs of movie trailers, commercials, TV shows, music videos, and celebrities.

Affion released his first comedy rap album shortly thereafter titled WATCH THE CLONE, with spoofs of popular artists like Jay-Z, Kanye, Eminem, 2 Chainz and more. Available on iTunes and other platforms! Affion also headlines comedy clubs across the nation and just produced his first-ever hour-long stand-up special, Affion Crockett “Mirror II Society”.
Affion resides in Los Angeles, California. In addition to his screen time, he is greatly involved in his production company, Lejan Entertainment, Inc.

Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway, a two-time All-American and a four-time NBA All-Star during his playing days, returned to his alma mater in the spring of 2018.

Hardaway was introduced as the University of Memphis men's basketball coach during a March 20, 2018 press conference at the Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center on the Park Avenue Campus. Hardaway became the school's 19th coach and the third former Tiger player in the modern era (since WWII) to lead the program, following Wayne Yates (1974-79) and Larry Finch (1986-97).

In his first season, Hardaway led the Tigers to a 22-14 record and the program's first postseason appearance in five years. The UofM reached the second round of the 2019 National Invitation Tournament, defeating San Diego in the opening round before falling to Creighton.

Before the NIT, the Tigers reached the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Championship at FedExForum, beating Tulane and NCAA Tournament-participant UCF before losing, 61-58, to 11th-ranked Houston.

The loss to Houston was one of only three the Tigers suffered at FedExForum, where they went 18-3, including the three games in the conference tournament. The other two losses came to nationally ranked opponents: No. 3 Tennessee and No. 25 Cincinnati.

The excitement generated by Hardaway's hiring led to a huge increase in attendance. The Tigers led the conference by averaging 15,106 per game, more than double the previous season's average of 6,225.

During the season, Hardaway directed the Tigers to top-3 finishes in multiple league categories. The UofM finished first in scoring (80.1 points per game) and assists (15.4); second in field goal percentage (45.3); and third in steals (8.0 per game) and 3-point field goal percentage defense (32.2).

Hardaway's initial team also produced one of three unanimous all-conference first-team selections in guard Jeremiah Martin. Martin tied for the league lead with a 19.7 points-per-game scoring average and ranked second in steals per game (2.2). Martin finished his career as the program's No. 10 scorer (1,625 points) and became the first Tiger to score 40 or more points in a game twice in a career.

Hardaway's success during his first season wasn't limited to on-the-court progress. His 2019 recruiting class -- including the nation's top prospect, 7-foot center James Wiseman -- was ranked the nation's best. Wiseman and forward Precious Achiuwa were five-star prospects. The other five signees -- Boogie Ellis, D.J. Jeffries, Lester Quinones, Malcolm Dandridge and Damion Baugh -- were rated four stars.

Hardaway began his first job as a college head coach after a successful run at East High School. East High won state titles in 2016, 2017 and 2018. With Hardaway serving as head coach, the Mustangs defeated Whitehaven High for the 2018 Class AAA championship.

Hardaway assumed the reins of a program that went 40-26 in two seasons under Tubby Smith, but did not make the postseason. At his introductory press conference, Hardaway called the job a blessing and said he was "ready to get the team back to the glory days." Athletic director Tom Bowen called it "an exciting day for the city."

In the Tigers' rich basketball history, there are few players as well known or decorated as Hardaway. A former prep standout at Treadwell High, he averaged 36.6 points and 10.1 rebounds as a senior in 1990 and was named Parade Magazine National High School Player of the Year.

He signed with the Tigers following an intense recruiting b

He grew up in Fort Lauderdale and attended Coral Springs Charter School and continued his education at the University of Connecticut where he was a two-time captain and started all four years as a cornerback. Dr. Corprew is passionate about revolution, not the bloody riots that mar cities and countries, but the opportunities we all have for personal and global transformation. As an educator for the last twenty years, Charles has worked to change the trajectories of America’s most precious demographics. He knows one way to do this is by providing the educational skills and life tools necessary to illuminate and catalyze the genius that resides within all of us. Within this spirit, Charles taught middle school Social Studies, and had the fortunate experience of teaching Psychology at the best place on earth, Green Run High School, his alma mater. It would be the lessons learned from his mentees at Green Run that led him to attain his Ph.D. in Psychological Science from Tulane, where he focused on resilient outcomes for boys and men of color. After a successful tenure as a professor, Charles believed there was more to sitting behind a desk pontificating about how things should be;; thus he started his social impact consulting firm, “What’s Your Revolution?”, where he worked to bring racial and gender equity to the consciousness of organizations across the country. In this capacity, he worked with some of the most influential education and mental health leaders to craft policy, programming, and practice that allows everyone to thrive in their varied contexts.

In 2019, Dr. Corprew joined Camelback Ventures as the director of the Education Fellowship, an early stage start-up accelerator for women and entrepreneurs of color. Founded by Aaron Walker, we believe genius is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not. Thus, our goal with the education fellowship is to propel our fellows into the next sphere of their journey so they can revolutionize the lives of the people they serve. Charles is also the host of the award-winning podcast, the “What’s Your Revolution? Show”. The show is an opportunity for men of color to detail how their su

Slugg: A Boy's Life in the Age of Mass Incarceration is a blueprint for survival and a demonstration of the power of love, sacrifice, and service. The son of a Kingpin and the prince of a close-knit crime family, Tony Lewis Jr.'s life took a dramatic turn after his father's arrest in 1989. Washington D.C. stood as the murder capital of the country and Lewis was cast into the heart of the struggle, from a life of stability and riches to one of chaos and poverty. How does one make it in America, battling the breakdown of families, the plague of premature death and the hopelessness of being reviled, isolated, and forgotten? Tony Lewis' astonishing journey answers these questions and offers, for the first time, a close look at the familial residue of America's historic program of mass incarceration.

The Amerikan Therapy team sits down with powerhouse Lyn Twyman to get real about domestic violence in 2020. The Amerikan Therapy team dives into a difficult discussion on infant loss and infertility within the Black Community.  In the black community, it is often seen as tabu to openly discuss the circumstances and emotions surrounding miscarrying a child, infant loss, and infertility.  It is often presumed that as a black woman you won't have any challenges bringing a child into the world.  However, based on the science and social data this couldn't be further from the truth.  Hopefully, this conversation will shed light on a common challenge within the black community in an effort to let others know they are not alone.

Black motherhood has long been stigmatized in a negative light. When we think of black mothers' the images of "Big-Momma", "Teen Moms", and overbearing black women are often conjured in the minds of the masses. While these images are sometimes true, there is a much larger population of well-healed, well educated, well-traveled, stylish, adventurous, and downright cool black moms. Amerikan Therapy breaks the stereotypes to talk about building a tribe of cool and supportive black mothers, and what that means for our mental and emotional health.

In this episode, we sit down with District Motherhued, an organization whose purpose is to bring black millennial moms together in order to build a supportive tribe of women. District Motherhued's mission is to engage black millennial moms with candor while empowering and equipping them with resources and support. District Motherhued provides a safe, judgment-free place to celebrate (or commiserate – depends on the day of the week) motherhood, and connect with other like-minded moms.

In this episode of Amerikan Therapy our host Sasha and Starr discuss how they navigated through a recent major conflict with each other. This show turns the focus on the host and how they themselves are implementing the therapeutic methods and strategies learned through the show. Show Psychiatrist, Dr. Royster, MD is joined by psychologist Dr. Krystal Stanley, Ph.D. and organizational design coach Olu M. Burrell, MSOD/PCC to help mediate said dispute and give our listeners tips and skills to better navigate their personal conflicts.

What Is Conflict Resolution?Conflict resolution is the process by which two or more parties reach a peaceful resolution to a dispute. Conflict may occur between friends, business partners, co-workers, or between supervisors and subordinates, or between service providers and their clients or customers.

  • Some conflicts are essentially arbitrary, meaning it doesn’t matter who “wins,” only that the problem is resolved so everyone can get back to work.
  • Some conflicts reflect real disagreements about approach and rules of engagement.

The Conflict Resolution Process:

  1. Recognition by the parties involved that a problem exists.
  2. Mutual agreement to address the issue and find some resolution.
  3. An effort to understand the perspective and concerns of the opposing individual or group.
  4. Identifying changes in attitude, behavior, and approaches by both sides that will lessen negative feelings.
  5. Recognizing triggers to episodes of conflict.
  6. Interventions by a truly impartial third party.
  7. A willingness by one or both parties to compromise.
  8. Agreement on a plan to address differences.
  9. Monitoring the impact of any agreements for change.

Do you know the terror of suffering a panic attack? Do you experience ruminating thoughts of worry that you cannot control? While we all experience anxiety, when feelings of intense fear and distress become overwhelming and prevent us from doing everyday activities, an anxiety disorder may be the cause.

The Amerikan Therapy team dives into what it is like to live with an anxiety disorder and debunks the misnomers surrounding this very common mental health challenge. The show's resident Psychiatrist, Dr. Tanya Royster MD, breaks down the facts and shares insights on when to know if you might need to seek professional help. Amerikan Therapy continues to evolve the conversation surrounding all things black mental health, and this is definitely a can't miss episode.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year. Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet only 36.9% of those suffering receive treatment. These disorders develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events. Anxiety disorders also often co-occur with other disorders such as depression, eating disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). As the population ages, more caregiving is being provided by people who aren't health care professionals. About 1 in 3 adults in the United States provides care to other adults as informal caregivers. A caregiver is anyone who provides help to another person in need, such as an ill spouse or partner, a disabled child, or an aging relative. However, family members who are actively caring for an older adult often don't self-identify as a "caregiver." Recognizing this role can help caregivers receive the support they need.

Amerikan Therapy gets personal in talking about their experiences as family caregivers to both Cancer and Alzheimers patients. Our guest clinicians come together to provide actionable tactics for managing the stress of being an adult caregiver. This is a no holds bar conversation on the emotional, mental and financial impacts of being the caregiver for another’s adult.

According to a 2015 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, an estimated 6.1 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States had at least one major depressive episode in the past year.  This number represented 6.7 percent of all U.S. adults. What’s more, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States, affecting 40 million adults in the aged 18 and older, or 18 percent of the population.  With the commonality of depression, the experience of the symptoms varies greatly.  Depression may not always be obvious to those around you, and we need to talk about the implications of this.
