In this episode, co-hosts Sally Hallingstad and Sarah Derdowski talk with Kara Byrne and Andrea Tettleton, two amazing WEN Global Presidents who’ve committed themselves to making WEN the best organization possible. From lessons learned to new, exciting tools coming down the pipeline, this episode is sure to get you excited for #WEN2023.
In other news, this will be Sally's last WEN podcast as host. It’s been quite the experience and she's learned a lot, from figuring out how to listen to others to editing podcasts in a program she'd never heard of. Sally also had a lot of fun with our guests, and this year with her co-hosts Barlett and Derdowski. Without them by her side, year three wouldn’t have had such diverse content.
Though these three are stepping down, there’s a new team taking over in 2023. Stay tuned for new content in early March, if not before. But for now, enjoy the final episode of 2022!
Today’s episode features not one, not two, but THREE amazing guests, all with Technip Energies:
All three of these women have engineering training and yet find themselves at a technology-forward company. How is this possible, you ask? In this episode, we dive into this question while learning more about Technip Energies, a company that prioritizes their global employees, from hiring locally to ensuring opportunities for growth within.
The takeaways from this episode are many, including the advice Caroline, Delphine, and Poornima left at the end of the episode, but the standout I heard is technology is booming. The world is going to be built on technology, and the brightest minds are needed to make this happen. Listen to this episode and if you don’t visit www.TechnipEnergies.com to look for career opportunities immediately after, I’d say you’re fibbing.

Today's episode features Jana Grauberger, Liskow & Lewis and former WEN Global President, interviewing Rebecca Watson, Welborn Sullivan Meck & Tooley, P.C. They have a great conversation about Rebecca's expansive career from creating policy and law for the federal government to her current role of counseling energy, oil and gas, renewable, and mining companies on regulatory compliance.
Rebecca is a force of nature, and has always made time for her passions of collecting art, volunteering, and supporting women in the energy industry. She was elected as the fourth woman president for the Foundation of Natural Resources and Energy Law (FNREL), a 3,000-member legal scholarly organization. Rebecca also founded FNREL's annual "Portia's Lunch," and gives us the inside scoop on how that started.
This episode is an ode to an incredible woman who has owned her strength and thrived in a typically male-dominated industry. We hope you enjoy the listen!

Regardless of where you are in your job search, Melissa reminds us that you need to treat your career path as a journey, not a destination. Enjoy the ups and downs. "Let's talk about C-C-S"...now Salt-N-Pepa will be stuck in your head all day thanks to Sarah Derdowski. You're welcome.
Carbon Capture Sequestration (CCS) may not be as sexy as a '90s Hip Hop group, but it is a realistic way of how we can get to net zero and meet our climate change goals with minimal changes in behavior. We regularly hear about goals around new innovations in energy, ESG, and decarbonization, but rarely do we talk directly about how we can achieve those goals in a practical manner.
In this episode we talk with our guest, Ashleigh Ross, Carbon America, about the definition of CCS, how it can be applied across industries, and the unfortunate truth about the complications around getting projects running (permitting, anyone?). Take listen to this episode to learn about the unseen potential of CCS's ability to help with our climate goals.

An existential crisis, by definition, refers to the ensemble of feelings and questions we have related to with the meaning and purpose of our life. Today's guest, Jennifer Cogburn, BloombergNEF, talks about how a lot of people have fear and anxiety about the energy transition. So much so that she's referred to this as our industry being in an existential crisis.
How can we shift the paradigm? As an industry, we are contemplating our value, purpose, and meaning and how we can get ourselves into a new normal. Right now, there is both danger and opportunity, and it's what you do about those things existing that makes the difference. Jennifer shares with us some new concepts around the transition - hello 1.75 degree model and demethanization - as well as how we can increase opportunity and creativity to do our part as individuals, companies, and a country.

Prior to joining the team at Target, Farhana had a long career in the oil & gas industry that allowed her to explore multiple countries and cultures. In addition to explaining ESG and some of the common misconceptions, Farhana touches on lessons learned throughout her career, her passion for helping other women, and shares tips on how to find the support you need, because women CAN do it all. As I (Sally) mention in the intro, Ward Polzin, CEO at Camino Natural Resources, is one of the kindest, most authentic leaders I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Undoubtedly, we live in a world with very mixed feelings about the US oil and gas industry. Sometimes, those conversations mute the positive impact the industry has made on the rural and urban communities in which we operate. And it’s not just the companies in the industries. Employees in the industry are some of the most generous people you will ever encounter. Enter today’s guest, Rex Korslien.
I had the pleasure of working with Rex at Whiting before he moved over to QEP Resources. He is now a Superintendent with QEP based out of Watford City, North Dakota. In this episode, sponsored by QEP Resources, we dive into the type of leadership Rex has developed, how passion for the industry keeps him motivated during a downturn and most importantly, why The Bakken is the place to be.
Fun fact: Rex is a man of many talents, including volunteering his auctioneer skills on the side, which you get a taste of in this episode (17:15).

Life is a roller coaster, full of ups and downs, and it’s how we handle the ride that makes us the people we are. Are you one to close your eyes and hold on for dear life or do you take the ride with eyes wide open and embrace the fear, knowing you’ll make it to the end? Today we get to speak with Nick Williams, father of three, a salesman with Leam Drilling Services and one of the most resilient and positive men I have ever met.
In this episode, Nick talks about how he’s embraced challenges of our industry (14:16), the genesis for starting Down for a Cure (29:00) and how you can support it (31:40) as well as his personal tips for being in sales regardless of your industry (38:32).

On May 25, 2020 our country saw the murder of George Floyd through a video that showed the world how easy it was for someone in power to take the life of another. This video showed the reality that many BIPOC Americans live every day of their lives and ignited a fire under people to fight harder for equality and real, sustainable change. I found myself in a position of uncertainty - a feeling I abhor. Uncertain if I was being supportive of Black Americans and if I wasn’t, uncertain of how I could be. This episode captures only a portion of how my coworker, Kathy Dawson, has helped me to open my eyes and ears to a part of our world that needs major change. Normally this is the part where I would give highlights of our conversation and tell you where in the track you could find it; however, in my mind, this episode is worth the full listen so I’m skipping the CliffsNotes. After talking with Kathy, I was inspired to learn even more about the history of Black Americans and the Black Lives Matter movement, and have included a few of the links I’ve found below. I hope that like me, this episode inspires you to educate, listen and support our fellow BIPOC Americans. #blacklivesmatter -Sally Hallingstad, WENCO Chapter President

Though you may not agree with everything he says, David Ramsden-Wood has become notorious for being a disrupter of the oil & gas industry through the #hottakeoftheday platform. Deb Ryan, P.E., is a reservoir engineer by trade, but defies this norm daily and is one of the most friendly, outgoing engineers you will meet. Which has only benefited her throughout her career. By diversifying her skill set, she has made herself more marketable in the energy industry.
In this episode, Deb talks about when she first realized she needed to diversify (13:11), the value of understanding other roles in the energy industry (24:20) and the need to have strong skills (32:47).
