Sermon Title: Finding Rest
Scripture: Philippians 4:5-13
According to what you told us, Faith, the reason you have a hard time sleeping is worry. Last week, Jesus said clearly, "Don't worry." We heard his beautiful admonitions to trust in God. This week, we'll be learning more about this trust and how it can bring us the rest we really need.

This week, we welcome a friend of mine to the pulpit, Gwen Derrick. I met Gwen in the mentoring group I led for those entering ordained ministry. I saw Gwen's strong gift for preaching right away, so I've invited her to bring our message on Judas this Sunday at the 9:40 and 11:00 services.

Title: A Further Resistance
Text: James 1:26-27
After Martin Luther lit the torch known as the Protestant Reformation, many different expressions of "church" came into existence. In England, King Henry VIII's broke away from the Roman Catholic Church and formed the Church of England. This branch of the tree is known as the Anglican or Episcopal Church in America. John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement, served as a priest in the Church of England -- as had his father, Samuel Wesley. Like Luther, Wesley never intended to start a new church. But, his reforms were too deep to remain in the Church of England and so the Methodist Church was born.

Title: Stirrin' It Up!
Text: Isaiah 58:5-9
Among believers, there has always been a tendency to stray from the intent of God’s good and right instructions. We quickly forget that God is not interested in our show or our status. Rather, God is interested in our intents and motives. The church in Rome struggled with reformers, those trying to bring back God’s people back to the fast that God chooses. Martin Luther arrives and turns it all upside down.
Title: Big C vs Little c
Text: Luke 24:28-31
The sacrament of Holy Communion has always been pivotal in the life of the church. It was and is an expression of unity among believers. After the church split into the east and west, Rome became the capital of what was known as Roman Catholicism. But, the word, “catholic” holds a much deeper meaning than indications of a denomination or a particular way of worship. It means, “universal,” and is an expression of God’s intent to save the whole world—not just our little corner of it.
