This episode is simple and complex. This episode is funny and serious. This episode is no frills and incredibly special. Just like in life, sometimes you just want to talk to your grandma – and that what I did. I had a conversation with my grandmother and recorded it.

So this week I bring back our “On” series. This is where I talk about important transitions in my life and hopefully make them relatable to you and your transition. So, this is my birthday week! Feel free to send gifts, cards and well wishes. But no pressure! So, I figured with would be a great opportunity to share my perspectives on getting old. By no means is this an episode bemoaning the aging process or lamenting all the things that I didn’t do or didn’t accomplish – y’all know me better than that! But what this IS are my observations and changes related to me getting older mentally, physically and emotionally.

So, I had a realization that I like to accept challenges. Accepting challenges allows me to improve, grow and learn. Accepting challenges is a way for me to get out of my comfort zone and keep making progress towards my overall goal of total world domination. Accepting challenges is also a way to test myself and to put new knowledge, skills and abilities into action. Lastly, accepting challenges is a great way to connect with people and PROVE that we have more in common that we do in difference. So, I dedicate this episode to Barney Stinson, played by Neil Patrick Harris, from How I Met Your Mother.

Here are some of the benefits of accepting challenges:

  • Opportunity
  • Personal satisfaction
  • Increased community
  • Creation
  • Fun and adventure or The Newness

Earlier this week I was channel surfing and I came across of my favorite movie’s, Barry Gordy’s the Last Dragon. Then it dawned on me that that movie was indeed all about transitions. And even more specifically, it was about knowing without knowing and action without thought. How do you actually know when you’ve made it to the next level? How do you know when you’ve achieved your goal?

This week we talk about the traits of the Last Dragon:

  • Hard work and dedication
  • Curiosity
  • Perseverance
  • Service to self and others
  • Humility
  • Continuous learning
  • Self-belief or confidence
  • Community
  • Bravery
  • Well-defined destination

"We all have a plan until we get punched in the mouth", said Mike Tyson. Now for us regular folks dealing with transitions - getting punched in the mouth can be equated to missing a deadline, not accomplishing a goal, blowing a commitment or missing a milestone. The question then becomes, "how do you deal with those situations?" While the answers will vary based on our experiences, I'm willing to bet we share the following related emotions:

  • Fear and anxiety
  • Confusion and embarrassment
  • Self-judgement and guilt
  • Blame
  • Comfort

Listen in to find out more about how me missing a publication deadline turned into this week's episode!

So, I’ve used this analogy before, being in transition can be a lot like planning a trip or vacation. There are unknowns, there are wants, there are desires, and there is a specific outcome in mind. It is your destination that guides you, leads you, and provides the proof that you’re on the right track. This is true regardless of your transition type.

I want to share a list of things you can do or try to help you choose that goal, direction, destination or passion. What ever you call it, I’m talking about the thing that will help guide you during your transition.

  • Assessments
  • Look to hobbies
  • Ask other people
  • Visualize the future
  • Make lists – consider open-ended questions
  • Get a coach or counselor

Being in the Moment isn’t easy, especially in today’s world of “always being on” and being “ ultra-accessible”. However, if you are in the moment more – you will also thrive in your transition more.

Here is a list of things that might help you along your journey of “Being in the Moment”:

  • Take a break from social media and/or technology
  • Journaling
  • Visualize (daily goals)
  • Wander – get out in nature
  • Gratitude ball – or some other routine to show or demonstrate your gratitude
  • Review your day
  • Meditation
  • Laugh – there is no shame in laughter
  • Play – yes, the obvious. But also turn mundane or difficult tasks into games
  • Breathe
  • Spend time with your community – people who make you fill happy, encouraged and fulfilled
  • Exercise – yoga, Pilates, running/jogging, martial arts
  • Focus on one thing at a time – what’s the next step?

Rewards, I’ve found, are everything in a transition! As you’re in the thick of it – as you’re doing the work – it can be hard to realize the amazing things you’ve done. I’ll go even further and say most of us won’t even recognize the things we do are amazing. That’s why rewards are even more important. They keep us moving forward. Rewards break up the hard work. They inject fun. Rewards provide an opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments. They give us the opportunity to share what we’re doing with others – strengthening our communities and building awareness for ourselves and those exposed to us.

Rewarding yourself is an important part of life and specifically transitions. Here are a few things to keep in mind when rewarding yourself.

  1. Choose a reward that celebrates and honors what you’ve just achieved.
  2. Make your reward personal to you and your accomplishments.
  3. Make the reward something easy to implement or enjoy quickly.
  4. Rewards should be on the same level as the achievement.
  5. Rewards don’t have to cost anything.

I've learned over the past week that sometimes, as a coach, I ask big scary questions like "What do you want?". Maybe a question that is more approachable is "What's Your Legacy?" This episode was inspired by last week's conversation with Steve Reimann as he called out that this very podcast will likely be around long after I'm gone. At first I thought this to be a bit morbid, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that he was right. The fact that I'm leaving a legacy became motivating and confirmation that I'm on the right path.

Here are few things that come to mind with I think "legacy":

  • Family – children, cousins, nephews, nieces, spouses and partners
  • Organizations
  • Volunteer work
  • Creations – artwork, music, poems, podcasts, blogs etc.
  • Reputation
  • Businesses

How many of you have experienced stress over the past couple of you? Yeah, me too! Well, listen in as we talk about the benefits of breathing - not everyday breathing - more "deep breathing". Believe it or not, we can forget to breathe.

Here are my Top 5 reasons or situations where you definitely want to remember to breathe:

  1. After you have been triggered
  2. Before big meetings, speeches, presentations or performances
  3. Before or during “Crucial Conversations”
  4. Before hitting send on important emails
  5. Before bed time or nap time

A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet.  Well, maybe?  But what I do know is that names are important. They have power.  They have meaning.  Names and title are important to me and I'm guessing they are important to you, too.  Listen in this week as I do a dramatic reading from Romeo and Juliet.  Oh, I also talk about how much meaning our names and titles have. So, how can you honor and respect someone else's name and/or title? Here are my humble suggestions:

Ask someone the history of their name Call or refer to people by the name or title that THEY prefer and don’t question it if that doesn’t match YOUR expectations or belief If you’re not sure how someone wants to be referred to or even the pronunciation of their names - ASK Decide what you would like to be called – name and or title Use positive, intentional and consistent titles for yourself

What the hell is "reinvention" and what does it have to do with change and transition? Tune in this week as we discuss that very topic with my guest Svetlana Kurilova.

My key takeaways from the conversation with Svetlana were:

  • It’s all about trust and vulnerability
  • If you don’t trust yourself – you’ve already decided that it’s not going to work
  • Vulnerability = practicing being yourself and being authentic
  • Sometimes you need to remove the noise and create the space to get to know yourself
  • Reinvention is a choice – it’s about your mindset
  • Reinvention is tied to growth and becoming something more than you are today

Please connect with Svetlana. You can check out her social media info here:

Happy Black History Month! I guess I can be just super simple and say that the "Only" this is about forcing yourself out of your comfort zone, whatever that may be for you. All possibility lies outside your comfort zone.

To truly appreciate the commonalties – you have to appreciate common experiences. If you don’t have common experiences – it’s nearly impossible to see someone else’s side of the story – to understand where they are coming from. You can’t walk a mile in someone’s shoes if you not willing to put on the shoes. Got it?

So, how can you better understand this concept of the “only”? For me it ultimately comes down to:

  • Respect and humility
  • Empathy (for others)
  • Insight (into yourself)
  • Curiosity
  • Vulnerability

Is is possible to learn and grow from the difficult, painful, or hurtful aspects of some transitions? Our answer is YES - in fact, it is a must. We discuss this and much more with Kristine Vineyard on this week's episode. My key takeaways from the conversation with Kristine were:

  • We can use the “negative” or “painful” events in our lives as “catalysts” to move forward
  • Life and transitions are not pain-free – normalize that conversation
  • Vulnerability and joy are NOT mutually exclusive
  • What got you here – won’t get you there
  • When you fall down – you have to get back up
  • Intentionality creates opportunity
  • You have a choice

Going out on your own can be one of the most confusion and daunting transitions that I'm aware of. This week talk to Dr. Wendy Molaska who recently went out on her own can opened her own clinic, Dedicated Family Care. My key takeaways from the conversation with Wendy were:

  • Focus more on the present than the future
  • Make yourself a priority
  • You get to define your success
  • Be one-track minded
  • Remove the noise (i.e. the "checky boxes")
  • It’s about the “long” game

What's stopping you? Maybe you think it's too late or that you don't have enough experience? My friend, this episode is for you! We get to talk about my boy, Vincent Van Gogh!!! Hence, he super catchy title of the episode. There are lessons to be learned from Van Gogh's life. These lessons are key to making the most of your transition and even quieting the voices in your head.

So, when I think about Vincent Van Gogh and his life and legacy – these are the things that jump out at me:

  1. Creation (aka proliferation)
  2. Community (aka the network)
  3. Chasing passion and purpose (aka the destination)

All 3 directly address that negative self-talk, regardless of your context or how you look at your transition. You can do it! It’s not too late! You can figure it out! You are NOT alone!

Hey! We made it! Another season in the bag. I do love doing this and I'm glad you're here to share in the experience. This week - the Season 2 Finale - we talk about the Art of Informational Interviews. I wanted to end the season with something practical and actionable versus just doing a season-in-review type of episode. If I could point to one thing that really put me on the path to truly "thrive" in my transition - it is informational interviews! Here are some of the things that I got as a result of informational interviews:

  1. Purpose
  2. Connection and expanded community
  3. Direction
  4. Opportunity
  5. Fun and excitement

What could be dangerous about "knowing"? Hell, some of us get paid to know! Sound like a crock??? Well, tune in and listen to the knowledge that I drop on this week's episode. The reality is that "knowing" eliminates possibility; creates separation and keeps us in our comfort zones. Why would you listen to outside opinions or ideas if you "know"? You wouldn't. That's my point!

What color lenses are you wearing? It is those lenses that color the way you see the world. This is the thing that we call "context" and it's absolutely what this episode is about. My personal definition of context is: the swirl of experiences, circumstances and beliefs that pretend to be facts. Wanna know more? Listen to this episode!

I was on one for this episode! You can't say that I'm not creative!!! But this week I tackle a topic that I've thought about for years - consumables (products that were meant to be used up or consumed) versus durables (products that were meant to last or are durable). I found that treating consumables as durables and vice versa can lead to confusion and a sense of being stuck. In the end, it all comes down to choice.

Happy 2020-won!!! I'm declaring victory and a winning spirit for you and for me this year. This week we conclude that amazing conversation with Mia Nevarez. We hear her answer to "What does Thriving in the Transition mean to you?" and so much more! Here were some of my big "ah-ha's" from the wrap-up of Surviving to Thrive:

  • Don’t be tied to expectations or the outcomes of a situation
  • Don’t over think it
  • It’s not failure – it’s just a different path
  • Don’t walk in anyone else’s shadow
  • Happiness is anywhere you are – you just have to look for it

It's New Year's week and many of us are looking to 2020 coming to an end. It is also a time for reflection and making plans for the new year. This wee we want to acknowledge that the struggle IS real!!! In every sense of it - but in particular for transitions. Successful transitions don't just happen. They require: work, planning, sacrifice, blood, sweat and tears. This week we hear from survivor, Mia Nevarez, about how sometimes you simply have to survive in order to thrive. Mia is truly vulnerable and shares some intimate details from her life that, perhaps, she's never shared before. That is part of what makes this episode special. There was so much goodness in my conversation with Mia that I had to make it two parts. Here are just a few of the key takeaways from this week's episode:

  • Do what works for you
  • Sometimes you have to look at your life like it isn’t yours in order to survive
  • Breakdowns lead to breakthroughs
  • It’s OK to NOT be OK
  • It’s all about choices
  • Someone else’s reality doesn’t have to be yours

Be sure to tune in next week for the conclusion of my conversation with Mia Nevarez.

It's Christmas week and all thoughts are on presents and gifts. This week's episode is all about the concept of gifts. In fact, we all, at some point, have ignored or not recognized gifts given to us by others OR we have ignored our own gifts. In this crazy year that is 2020 - there has been a shadow of fear, doubt, confusion and anger that has made it easy to overlook such gifts. But has 2020 really been that bad? What gifts have you received from 2020?

What does "pursuing your passion" look like? This week I re-connected with Sapna Dalal - friend, blogger, foodie, and world traveler! We had an amazing conversation about pursuing your passion. It's, sometimes, easier said that done - but if you can put yourself out there, even when you're scared or hurt - the benefits will definitely outweigh the risks. All it takes is a small step to keep moving forward.

This week's episode was all about authenticity. We had a conversation with creator and owner of The Foodie's Fit Home. Both Ashley and I had changes in attitude during this episode! Ashley's change was around why she was on the show and broadening her platform and mine was around the definition of authenticity. I'm talking "Thriving in the Transition" in action, people! What does authenticity mean to you and what role does authenticity play in your transitions?

The way we view the world, our mindset, can have an impact our intended results. In fact, my mindset AND some electronic circumstances almost led to this week's episode not happening. However, you're reading this - so, it did happen - thanks to pausing and thinking about this situation. Similarly, one of the most powerful and opposing points of view are Scarcity and Abundance. Which are you more comfortable or familiar with?

Additionally, feel free to check out the the blog post I created on this topic a few years ago:

What's the difference between getting stuck and floundering in the transition and being motivated and thriving in the transition? I think it is as simple as the difference between Creation and Consumption. Those that create MORE than they consume are the people that have the power and opportunity to affect true change. Think about it - like voting - you can go out and let your voice be heard and be part of the change or you can be silent and let change happen to you. The reality is that those who create MORE than they consume will thrive in the transition!

It's easy to let finances have undue influence during our transitions. The insecurity of NOT having money in the bank, losing a job or somehow "pivoting" can be stressful. Conversely, the security of having savings or other assets may provide a boost of confidence or comfort when it's needed the most. This week we talk to Andy Hill, podcaster, blogger and speaker on how finances can have an impact on the transition. He also shares some tips on how to make the most of your finance during this crazy year of 2020.

Hey gang! We made it to the end of my first podcasting season!!! I want to do a couple of things with the Season 1 Finale:

  1. I want to do a season in review, of sorts. I want to do a refresher of the previous 19 episodes and my key takeaways from each episode.

  2. I want to share what I’ve learned through the creation, production, marketing and scheduling of the podcast. I’d actually consider this to be another episode of our “On Series”… so this episode will be “On Being a Podcaster”.

I present to you the Top 10 Things I’ve Learned about Transitions from Being a Podcaster:

  1. Sometimes you have to ask for help

  2. Understand Your Purpose

  3. What’s your goal

  4. Understand what you’re really committed to

  5. Harness creativity by adhering to a schedule

  6. You have to maintain safety and self-care at all times

  7. It’s all about the community

  8. Awareness is a must

  9. You have to align your words, your intentions and your actions

  10. Humility doesn’t have to be defined – but it has to be present

I was not alone this inaugural season. I want to sincerely thank my guests that believed, supported, taught, inspired, and encouraged us for the past 5 months!!!!

· Lucy Coelho

· Clint Genett

· Laurie Mulligan

· Tammy Parrish

· Steve Reimann

· Lynn Watkins-Asiyanbi

· Sarah Zadigan

If you like last week's conversation, you're going to love how Steve Reimann, Sarah Zadigan, and I wrap-up the conversation on "humility" this week. The "Humility All-Stars" absolutely killed it!

This is what we covered in the conclusion of this 2-part conversation on humility:

  • Where does or where can humility go wrong

  • Practical strategies to practice humility

  • Love songs or songs of faith and humility

And here's a recap of our wrap-up conversation on humility - you know stuff we actually talked about:

  • You have to be aware of yourself, your community and your environments (conclusion)

  • Distinguish personal or professional arena – humility can playout and be rewarded/received differently (conclusion)

  • Three bench-marking questions from Lou Holtz: Can I trust you? Are you committed to excellence? Do you care about me?

Ultimately, humility is NOT about you. It is about your focus on others – or not. And that includes your intentions, the words you use, your actions and ultimately your results. Humility is NOT knowing. Sometimes to thrive in the transition you have to give up knowing. You have to sit with things. You have to get support. You have to ask for help.

And speaking of help, Steve dropped some very practical tips on how to practice humility more – or at least to be more aware:

  • Explore and document your top values

  • Build a personal mission statement

  • Identify what feeds your ego versus what builds humility

  • Engage those around you

Now this is one for the record books!!! I can't wait for you to hear this one as we talk about humility with Steve Reimann and Sarah Zadigan. This one is so good that we made it two parts!!! Be sure to tune in next week for the the conclusion.

This is what we covered in part 1 of this 2-part conversation:

  • The definition of “humility”

  • The language of transitions

  • Why humility is important in transitions

Here's a quick recap of our conversation on humility – up to this point:

  • The language we use frame humility and transitions is everything

  • Don’t spend too much time in your head – perceived problems tend to grow and expand

  • When you move focus from others – you focus on self

  • Distinguish personal or professional arena – humility can play out and be rewarded/received differently (intro)

  • You have to be aware of yourself, your community and your environments (intro)

Remember to tune in next week for the conclusion of this brilliant conversation around humility. This one came down to the wire!!! But it's totally worth it! This week we talk to Clint Genett - just an amazing person. We had a great discussion about the power of flexibility and adaptability. Clint even sang for us!!!! It was amazing. Anyway, here are the highlights:

· Embrace vulnerability

· Change is 100% constant

o See and accept change

o Within all change exists the opportunity to grow, expand and connect with others

o Change is there to work for us NOT against us

· Don’t focus on the door that has closed – you may miss all the doors that are opening

· Practice makes progress

o And exact goals can take away from learning adaptability/flexibility

o It’s about incremental growth

· Connection is a birth right

· In all shades of grey, there exists light

· You power is determined your mindset

· Creativity can be fostered by routine

· Courage means sharing your voice and your authentic self with the world

· Embrace the change ( and/or transition) for what it could be versus what it appears to be

· Self-love needs to be your number one companion

There were so many relevant points in that conversation – they just kept coming. And I enjoyed every – single – moment. I just hope that you found as many things to take away as I did. And if you paid any attention to my conversation with Clint, I promise you will Thrive in the Transition.

This week's episode was all about "being comfortable with discomfort". I was joined by friend and "well'practiced transitioner", Sarah Zadigan. Here's a quick recap of our conversation as it pertains to being comfortable with discomfort:

· Growing Pains – the mental pains of growth mirror the physical pains of growth

o Continual Evolution

· We have changed the language of transition – that it’s bad

o Vulnerability

· Practice

o Mindfulness and being present

· Have faith in yourself and in your goal

· Surround yourself with people that will honor your transition

· “If you fail… fail while daring greatly” Teddy Roosevelt

· The opinions of the people NOT in the arena with you don’t matter

o Sometimes you he to Marie Kondo the people in your life

· Express gratitude

· Choose to make the language of transitions positive vs negative

· Transitions are periods of vulnerability

o Strengths and vulnerability are NOT mutually exclusive

· Be aware of the feeling of uncomfortable

o Is it simply your growth

o Is it that you are growing away from those in your arena

· Changing goals is NOT the same as quitting

o Quitting means I’m not willing to put the work in

· If yourself grace and to accept the transition for all that it has to offer

There was so much goodness in that conversation. I’ll simply segue by saying - leverage these points and my conversation with Sarah to Thrive in the Transition.

Today's episode almost didn't happen! I had lots of ideas for the episode, but nothing that fit. That is until my wife told me, "Don't worry, inspiration will hit - it always does." Thus, this episode on inspiration was born! And in the episode I share my tips and tricks to make space for inspiration to make an appearance. Oh, and there is also a nice discussion about muses.

Here's a quick recap of my personal list of ways to help coax a burst of inspiration:

· Music

· Podcasts, e-books, books, audio-books

· Authentic conversation

· Being

o Meditation

o Nature

o Working out

· Creating

o Art

  • Music

  • Photography

  • Painting

  • Poetry

o Cooking

o Mixology

So, what’s the point? Well the point is that sometimes you have to make your own inspiration. And you can't inspire others if you're not inspired! I promise that using any of my tips and tricks will help you to Thrive in the Transition.

This episode is about choices. Choices are everything during a transition. Choices are the difference between getting the job or not. They are the difference between meeting the love of your life or sitting at home by yourself. Choices are even the determining factor between happiness and dissatisfaction.

I’m not talking about being right or wrong; or even making a good choice or a bad choice. I want to talk about choices in terms of being responsible for your choices and their outcomes versus utilizing choices to become a victim and blaming the world for the outcomes of those same choices.

We explored today's topic by using 30 quotes or pieces of “conventional wisdom”. And I pose the following questions to our listeners:

  1. What is the most pressing choice facing you right now?

  2. What areas of your life can you be more responsible for?

  3. What does being a victim provide to you?

By reflecting on the answers to those questions, I want to empower you to make better choices so that you can ultimately reach your goals – whatever they are - and thrive in the transition. Be sure to share your answers with us.

She is an amazing person with an equally amazing story. If you’re lucky, she’ll share some of that story with you. OK, even if you’re unlucky you’re going to hear a bit of Lucy’s story.

Here are the highlights:

*You don’t have to understand you “why” or purpose for it to exist.

-What’s your “positive why”

-Look at the bright side of things

-Sometimes you have to look back to “see” your why

-Your purpose isn’t just for you!

*Knowing your strengths can help you identify your purpose

*Pursue all that you do with passion and excellence

*Your strengths aren’t just to fix YOUR broken pieces

*As human beings we weren’t created to be alone – what might be missing in my toolbox could be in yours

*Trust and Control do not co-exist – you can have one or the other

*Pause and Reflect – get to know yourself for who you are

I promise you – if you follow any one of the tips that we discussed you will be in a better place – in life. Hell, if more people lived their purpose the world would be in a better place. That’s why this topic and this podcast are so important! If you follow any of the tips and pointers that we covered during this episode you will position yourself to Thrive in the Transition.

Today I want to talk about one of my favorite concepts – wandering. This episode is all about wandering and Keri Smith's book The Wander Society.

I found the book to simply be life-changing. It was familiar and yet totally innovative – both at the same time. It supported many of my own beliefs AND challenged my thinking. It reaffirmed my experiences AND sparked my creativity. So, this episode is dedicated to all things wandering and The Wander Society!

One of my favorite concepts from Keri Smith’s book is the concept of Perception Hacking. This is where things get really relevant to Thriving in the Transition. But you should go ahead and listen to this entire episode any way!

This week I have the pleasure of introducing you to one of the most awesome and powerful people that I know – Laurie Lindsay Mulligan!!! You will be able to tell immediately why I asked her to be a guest. And she’s really going to share HER – her story, her experiences, her insights and most importantly her courage!!! You’ll know what I’m talking about when we get there.

This episode was all about self-care. How to recognize it - how to maintain it - and what it looks like. Best of all - this was all from the perspective of Laurie and her actual experiences!

Main points for self-care during a transition:

  1. Beware and be aware of the Should vs the Need
  2. Plan for self-care – plan to be the “vacation version of our best self”
  3. Discover YOUR identity
  4. You can’t inspire people if you’re not inspired
  5. Find calm AND keep you chin up – literally and figuratively
  6. Give yourself some credit – reflect or even list our accomplishments!
  7. Seek the help you need
  8. If you’re not going to do it today – you’re not going to do it tomorrow
  9. Do a little bit everyday

I do want to reiterate a point that Laurie made. Neither of us are medical professionals. If you think you are depressed – seek help. Have the conversations – ask the questions. Take care of you! It’s OK – there is no shame, no stigma.

I promise you – if you follow any one of the tips that we discussed you will be in a better place. You will position yourself to Thrive in the transition.

This week I wanted to do something different – I wanted to go against the grain. I’ve been talking the past several weeks about transitions and how you know you’re in transition and even guests to help illustrate Thriving in the Transition. This week we wanted to have some fun and talk about movies. I am joined, again, by Steve Reimann (Instagram: @bow_tie_ginger; E-mail: bowtieguy23@gmail.com).

We wanted to use movies to help illustrate what I’ve been saying for all these weeks. Transitions are woven into the fabric of pop culture. Whether through songs, art, books and magazines – transitions are unavoidable. There is no medium more popular or impactful than movies. They depict transitions in myriad ways. In fact, there are as many types of transitions in movies as there are personalities of people going through transitions.

Our hope is that you find a movie that resonates with your and that you get a bit of insight into your own personal transition.

What you can expect is for us to take turns with the movies on our lists – starting with #5 moving up though #1. For each movie we will give you:

  • The Title of the Movie
  • The Year
  • The Actors
  • A movie summary or synopsis
  • Why we picked it
  • A WIIFM or what you can expect to the movie and/or how transitions are represented in that movie

I think it’s safe to say that we chose movies based on a few things:

  • Can’t be JUST entertaining
  • Can’t be JUST motivational
  • Has to be accessible to a broad range of audiences – again, we have more in common than we do in difference we’re we’ll be taking about breadth, depth and variety of transitions
  • Has to have a CLEAR take-away – meaning you don’t need an interpreter to tell you what the point was

Let us know what movies resonated with you! If you’re getting something from this podcast please give us a rating of 5-Stars where ever you listen to your podcasts.

I was compelled to do today’s episode based on current events and some bread crumbs that were left for me in the forest of life. (You guys know I have a poetic soul, right.) I knew I wanted to do an episode on realizing the world isn’t safe for the first time.

On top of all that, in case you missed all the emails from every service provider or major corporation that you do business with - have an account with – a rewards card from – a membership to – or you accidentally clicked on their Facebook ad, we’re in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. And all those folks who sent you all those emails want you to know what they are doing to help in this situation – as well as a bit of opportunistic marketing, in my opinion.

I guess this episode of Thriving in the Transition is my attempt at that – letting you know my suggestions to help during this scary, confusing and unprecedented time in human history. My goal is to have things not be so scary and to help you put your arms around this shared transition.

The concept of being unsafe is pervasive in every form of media in the world right now. That led me to connect the concept of recognizing the first time the world was unsafe with Change. Yes, we are in the depths of a huge change. But more so, we are reacting to that change very differently. Some of us still haven’t taken it seriously; some of us have stocked up on bottled water and toilet paper; and, I believe the majority, still don’t know how to react, what to do, how to behave or even how to wrap our heads around the whole thing.

My assertion is that by reflecting on that event or situation which led you to KNOW the world isn’t safe – you can get a better understanding YOUR basic responses or tendencies to change and transition, because there is no bigger change than realizing the world is NOT safe for the first time. And with that insight, you can better understand where your are in handling the current pandemic that is COVID-19 or Coronavirus.

To me, part of Thriving in the Transition is simply being able to put your arms around the change or transition. Once you have your arms around it – you can now do something about it – meaning you can create a goal, destination or daily intention to get through.

Here are the key points:

  • Focus on what you have to gain vs what you’re losing or giving up
  • Create a support network or community
  • It’s OK to grieve – grief is natural and part of every change
  • The stages of grief are not linear and can happen in any order
  • What’s the meaning? What meaning can you take or create?

Whoop here it is!!! Today’s episode is all about having a goal or a destination or, as we mentioned in the last episode, having a “daily intention”. It’s my belief that without a goal or destination there is NO WAY to thrive in the transition.

No destination means no focus; no direction; confusion; and no way to measure progress. Perhaps, most importantly – not having a destination creates the perfect excuse to avoid accountability and responsibility.

I was joined by Tammy Parrish. Tammy is an image consultant and owner of The Clothing Compass, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Tammy helps ambitious professionals match their outside to their insides, so they have more self-confidence and become even more successful in less time.

I wanted to talk to Tammy for several reasons – but the primary one for me was that we were Prom King and Queen back in 1992 at Cape Central Senior High. Yes, this makes for a good story, but it also demonstrates the power of creating a goal or a destination. It also, personally, made me realize that I can do anything if I set my mind to it. Said another way, you can get there as long as you have a destination!

Here are the key points:

  • You have to have a goal or destination
  • Stay flexible and get after it – you may not always hit the mark or the mark may be a moving target – but realize where you are and enjoy it
  • What can you find to like or love during a transition?
  • Listen to and trust yourself and don’t ignore the small things
  • Be accountable and responsible
  • You don’t need the picture – focus on making the memory
  • Ambition is not a dirty word
