What happens when you dare to abandon others' blueprints and forge your own destiny? My profound conversation with Melanie Ann Layer of Alpha Femme reveals just that. From navigating life in her car to manifesting a global empire, Melanie's journey is a testament to the sacred alchemy of leading from within.

We explore the pivotal shift from external striving to embodying the magnificent force you already are. Melanie shares philosophies like "pineapple season is coming" for divine timing, "for me, for you, for us" for authentic connection, and "I am the one or the one who got away" for pure sovereignty.

This dialogue transcends old paradigms, inviting you to see growth as an exhilarating exploration of boundless potential. Melanie's ultimate legacy? Cultivating a future where daughters celebrate their mothers' powerful paths.

This conversation isn't just about success—it's about transmuting its very definition into an experience of sublime unfolding.

Have you ever noticed those competing voices in your head? The one that spirals into doubt, questioning your progress, and another that whispers wisdom and reassurance? During a peaceful evening by my cottage fireplace, I experienced this familiar internal dialogue - what I call my "Woe" and "Wow" voices.

This episode explores how to recognise these distinct inner voices and strengthen the wise, powerful "Wow" voice that often gets drowned out by our noisy inner critic.

I share a profound revelation that changed everything for me: "You'll know you're there not when you're rich, but when you stop needing money to prove you're worthy of being heard." This insight applies beyond finances to any external validation we desperately seek.

The transformation happens when we realise that money (or any measure of success) doesn't respond to begging or desperation. These resources want to build with us, not rescue us. Becoming your empowered 'Wow' self requires courage rather than confidence, changing on the inside before seeing evidence on the outside.

Most people who seem to "make it" don't feel any more ready than anyone else - they've simply stopped waiting for the world to crown them and claimed their role first.

What happens when you stop forcing a business model that doesn’t fit—and start building one that actually reflects who you are?

In this bold and honest conversation, Richelle Gamlam shares her journey from struggling entrepreneur to founder of Move Abroad Coach, a thriving international coaching business helping people design lives they actually want to live—abroad.

We dive into:

  • How she grew from $4K a year to a million by ditching the standard "webinar-to-course" formula
  • The moment she realised her worst-case scenario was already happening—so why not bet on something better?
  • The personal fears she faced relocating her family to Spain after five years in Tbilisi Georgia
  • How she now helps others create personalised relocation plans that address mindset and logistics
  • The behind-the-scenes of living internationally in China, Vietnam, Tanzania, and beyond
  • Why bootcamps, not blueprints, helped her clients finally move

Richelle’s story is a masterclass in alignment, courage, and creating freedom on your own terms. Whether you’re dreaming of living abroad or ready to rewrite the rules in your business or life—this episode is your permission slip.

What happens when a legal scholar rides shotgun with police—and builds trust with sex workers—on the streets of Johannesburg?

Professor India Thusi spent nearly two years embedded in both worlds. The result? A radical inside look at how policing really works—and why the criminalisation of sex work does more harm than good.

In this episode, she shares the story of being detained during her research, the power dynamics it exposed, and what her journey from Yonkers to Johannesburg taught her about justice, race, and reform.

If you care about policing, power, or what it means to build safety in society—this conversation will shift something in you.

A big change has happened. A global evolution you may not know about, but definitely have felt.
It challenges what we’ve been told to believe all our lives and it’s igniting a quiet uprising.

That change…is the move from the Age of Success to the Age of Integrity.
And a move from old power to New Power.*

Phrases like “just do it”,trust the process" and “skyrocket to success” aren’t landing anymore?

This language of The Age Of Success is an outdated power position. A language of war. Where people are targets, captured by lead magnets and then processed through funnels! Where building a business uses analogies of driving a bus, climbing a ladder or getting on the 'road to success'.And we chase evangelists who peddle their fast tracks, whilst the Joneses have upgraded to Kardashians.

Its way of thinking has been taught in schools all our lives (no wonder we have mindset issues around greatness and being entrepreneurial!).

If you are frustrated and out of alignment... things are changing.
Especially in the online business and marketing world.

An unconventional difference is here…

The Age of Integrity isn’t about a moral standpoint.
It's about humanity being in integrity with who we were born to be.
That’s true freedom.

Trusting in our own hearts.
Light. Free. Uncomplicated.
Where we are free from victimisation.
And Tall Poppies are encouraged, not cut down.

Where... life and business follows natural rhythms that don't burn people out.

Self-sustaining. Organic. Creative.

Growing a business, instead of building one.Just like a farmer relates to seasons.

Where businesses market to people’s wow… not their fears.
Where feminine and masculine energies dance together.
Where relationships with wealth, success and failure are healthy.
Where businesses market to people’s wow… not their fears.
And joy is the compass.

A new, fresh path forward.Shoulder-to-shoulder.
Conscious relationships.
No pecking order.
Showcasing other’s brilliance instead.

Not fearing the future, but leading it.

*David Hawkins, MD Phd. author

If you look up the definition of 'mother archetype' in the dictionary, my next guest Laura Sweet would probably have her name there as an example.

She's been a client of mine and has been active, nurturing, inspiring part of my Lead Your World community for a while, so it is with great pleasure that I get to 'show her off' today.

Laura Sweet is a writer and artist living on a small homestead in Northern California between the Redwood Highway and Blacksands beaches of the Lost Coast since 1994.

She and her husband of 37 years, Homeschooled their two daughters in a beautiful rural community and now maintain an integral role in the lives of three grandchildren as well.

Laura’s creative lifestyle is a practical expression of both her transformational health and her natural reciprocity with life. It is how she remains devoted to the mercurial essence of the world she inhabits. If she could impart one simple thing to every soul in the world, it would be that they are whole, holy beloved and worthy of encountering themselves thus.

Oh my. My next guest, Karen Stanton is a powerful woman who has the most beautiful, down-to-earth, natural, easy-going energy about her. We've known each other for a few decades but lost touch (apart from social media). And I'm sooooo glad we used this special edition series to reconnect.

Nicole Kidman is like Vegemite.
... that's something Australians might say.

That (delicious) black toast topper that Australian parents scrape on their kid's sandwiches.

You either love it, or you don't.

Whatever your preference, you probably fall for the "Nicole Kidman Factor" every day.

Or the "Jennifer Lopez Factor".

The "Don't look your age" pressure.

The appearance of not being over 30.
When our passport photo says otherwise!

No matter how many jars of anti-ageing skincare we own.

Anti-aging - even that word is evidence of unhealthy groupthink.

We age.

No wonder they call middle age the invisible years.

When in reality women over 40 are the glue that holds our world together.

So... please do yourself (and your beautiful self esteem) a favour and go listen to my latest inspirational podcast episode with popular author and midlife advocate, Catherine Greer.

No matter what age you are.
Or even if you happen to be Nicole Kidman.

On this episode we chat about:

  • Why are men allowed to age, but women aren't?
  • Why it's never too late to start something new (or change directions).
  • Getting in touch with our pleasure.
  • And much, much more...

About Catherine
Canadian Catherine now lives in Sydney, Australia with her family. She writes books, runs a busy copywriting business and passionately connects with women at Love Our Age, an age-positive blog. Catherine’s books include two best-loved nonfiction titles, The 10 Minute Fix and Small Steps Are Perfect (Balmoral Press), a YA thriller, Love Lie Repeat, (Penguin Books), and two children’s picture books, Violin & Cello and Jacaranda Snow. And she's an incredible human!

  • The backlash that can happen when women speak up.
  • Empathy and anger - two emotions we need more of.
  • Making watching 'Our Planet' (David Attenborough) mandatory for humanity.
  • Sisterhood, not victimhood.

Katja is a human disco ball: combining her super-sharp PhD scholar head with all the emotions, she knows how to connect the head and the heart through music, sound & the breath. A punk rock philosopher, a feminist coach and a web conversion copy writer, she helps her highly sensitive entrepreneur clients find the words that make them stand out and shine, so they can help heal the world. Revealing identities - that's her claim and that is what all her diverse activities as a serial expert lead to, from yoga retreats via copy coaching to high-end, holistic personal branding from the inside out.

Johdi’s clients enjoy lasting, unparalleled results because she takes a revolutionary and rebellious route to the otherwise very boring, very ineffective methods that you'll find elsewhere in the Health & Fitness World. Her multidisciplinary approach is unlike anything you’ve ever tried before, because no-one combines precise anatomical and physiological corrective exercise know-how, with a witch-like ability to heal that her clients describe as ‘magic’.

Cathryn and I have been friends for over 20 years. We met at the change-management consultancy we worked for, which was based in Scotland. I lived in London in the days way before remote working was even a thing - and yet this company believed in it, so I worked from home.

Once a month I'd fly up to the company offices for a few days and stay with Cathryn and her husband. I have fond memories of late night chats and lots and lots of laughter over a bottle of wine.

And tears. And dreams.

Before the pandemic I finally took my son to visit them and they gave us a most magnificent holiday touring around Scotland. My teenager still talks of it.

As you listen to this episode, soak up the essence of Cathryn and you'll see why I love this girl so much, and why people love the Scots so much. I'm so excited to show her off to you.

Hello there. I'm Merilyn and this is a special edition of my podcast.

Throughout March I'm SHOWING OFF women. Everyday women of all sorts, all over the world. Some I've known for years, and others are new friends that I've met on this podcast.

We are chatting about the power and the struggle of being women. I'm showcasing my guests, and allowing them to showcase the women who have influenced them.

The whole purpose of this March project is to use International Women’ Day and Women's History Month as an opportunity to showcase every women in my world… to ‘show off’ about them, which is something we are usually uncomfortable with.

My desire is to bring a little insight, encouragement, inspiration and even a little joy and beauty at a difficult time on the planet.  And, most importantly, to help me on my personal mission to re-imagine leadership for women.

Because when women shine... when women rise... when women unleash their wow... earth smiles.

In this episode I'm sharing my MANIFESTO.

To give you further insight into our vision to disrupt the definition of 'leadership' for women.

This is a very special month.
I'm calling it SHOW OFF month.

Where throughout March I'll be showing off everyday women from my world, in short episodes.

As part of celebrating International Women's Day.

And I'm starting off by sharing my vision.
Something I've been skirting around for years.

You see, I've been tired. Exhausted.
Yes, we've had the pandemic.
Yes there's war.
And floods.

And trouble everywhere.
Many reasons to be weary.

But this tiredness was from lack of vision. Or rather, a denying of my purpose.

And today I'm kicking off the month by sharing my personal story and why.

My guest today, Ciara, was born to be an entrepreneur, selling rocks to her neighbours at 5-years-old and moving up from there (including the White House).

She has done it all - opening two retail stores within two years, merging them together into a franchise, creating and marketing wholesale subscription boxes for boutique retailers, and successfully selling that service within the first 18 months. Most recently Ciara has launched the Boutique Workshop, a coaching program for retailers.

Ciara is coaching retail owners from the perspective of someone who’s done it successfully, and teaching others how to find the same success she’s had.

My guest today is business coach Julie Ciardi. She’s a former high performing Fortune 500 marketing VP who felt that frustration of ‘something more’ and her story of making the big change in life to running her own business is inspiring.

She’s got some really practical advice on the subject. She’s done it. She’s done it as a mum of three and her marriage in tact!

I think you’ll instantly feel drawn to Julie’s story, just like I did.

Julie believes that there has never been a better time for women to create an additional income stream that is aligned to her passions and purpose on this planet.

This episode was unexpectedly powerful.

Sometimes when I'm recording episodes I sense there’s a universal message that must come through and be heard.

This episode is one of those.

But it nearly didn’t happen. We both felt suddenly ill just before going live and in 246 episodes I’ve NEVER had technical problems...  until this episode.

So if you are reading this, please take this as a message to you personally. You are probably meant to listen!

I'm chatting with Irene Lyon. She’s been working with the nervous system for years – on herself and her clients, but this episode goes WAY beyond this.

It’s a message for the times we are living.

A message of hope.

Irene Lyon teaches people around the world how to work with the nervous system to transform trauma, heal body and mind, and live full, creative lives. To date, her online programs have reached thousands of people in over 90 countries.

When I knew today's guest was coming on the show, I quickly downloaded the preview version of her Kindle book, "How to Be Wildly Wealthy Fast".

I thought, 'another book on money mindset, how different could this be?'.

How wrong I was.

Within a few pages I ran back to Kindle and purchased the whole thing.

And devoured it in a few hours.

I discovered she was the coach of many of the coaches I followed (like the gorgeous Denise Duffield Thomas).

I was getting really excited to talk to Sandy. I had lists of questions.

And then I met her.

She's the most down to earth, spiritual 'guru' I've encountered (she'll not want to be called a guru, and I hate using that word, but if there was anyone deserving the term in a true sense, it would be her).

I never got around to most of my questions as we just chatted in a natural flow.

We discovered we both grew up with similar backgrounds during the same decades in suburban Australia, and a new friend was found.

So without further ado, I invite you to listen right through (it's a long one, but goodie) to this fun and inspiring podcast episode.

Here's the official bit:

Sandy Forster, is the money mindset mentor for women who are ready to experience more abundance and freedom in their life.

Her story is incredible.

Sandy Forster went from welfare to millionaire, has been featured in Oprah’s Aussie Secret and loves inspiring and empowering women to break through their blocks, manifest more money and create a life they’re truly passionate about.

Her award-winning international bestseller "How to Be Wildly Wealthy Fast" has been translated into over 11 languages and she’s transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of women worldwide. Welcome Sandy…

Sandy feels she’s been truly blessed to have some amazing experiences in her life so far. Met her boyfriend at 16, married him 11 years later and divorced 3 years after that (became a single mum and ended up with $100,000 of debt and on welfare) then discovered the Law of Attraction, became a master at manifesting and turned it all around.

She’s climbed to the highest camp on Mt. Kilimanjaro, meditated in complete silence for 10 days, watched the wildebeest migrate across the Serengeti, trekked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, dived with dolphins in Hawaii, wandered markets with Moroccan nomads in the High Atlas, white water rafted down the Zambezi and was helicoptered off Mt. Everest where she almost died trekking to Basecamp.

She’s swum in Sacred Mayan underground caves, flown by helicopter over Victoria Falls, danced with Masai tribesmen in Kenya, travelled to over 52 countries, gone from welfare to millionaire, written a bestselling book, won multiple business awards and been personally invited by Jack Canfield to be a member of the world’s most awesome group of transformational leaders, experts and authors on the planet!

Sandy loves showing women anything is possible. and then empowering them to break through their blocks, manifest more money and create a life they’re truly passionate about.

It's not often that people surprise me. Today's guest did. Yes, Fabienne Fredrickson is a veteran of the business coaching space known for her TedX talk, her inspirational speaking and her hugely successful business, Boldheart is well known throughout the world.

None of that surprised me.

What surprised me... what delighted me... was her personal energy. She's even more inspiring off stage, when there's no audience (yes, we chat before we press 'record'). She's real. She's authentic.

Yes she's polished and confident, but what came across to me more was a beautiful, natural fusion of both feminine and masculine energy. She has a natural gentle, graceful energy which is incredibly magnetic.

In other words, she's a leader. An inspirational leader in life and business.

When I grow up I want to be like Fabienne!

I hope you enjoy this chat as much as I did.

Now the 'official' bit:

My guest today has battled burnout and illness to build the business of her dreams teaching other high achievers how they can have it all. With a long and profitable career in real estate and sales in Fortune250 companies she was the poster-child of ‘success’. But at a price.

Now, through her performance strategy and coaching practice, she is helping others redefine success and bring more joy and physical, mental and emotional stamina to their lives.

Introducing, Rhonda Berlino.

For over 25 years, Rhonda worked in high pressure, high stress environments. Working with Real Estate professionals, as a Sales Executive at a Fortune 250 Company, as a coach specializing in business development, professional development, and lead generation. She worked with countless brokers and agents to help them increase profits, bring in new leads, close bigger deals.

She worked long hours, travelled constantly, and ignored the signs that her body was giving her. As a driven, talented professional who was all in, she pushed through and kept pushing through with the confidence and energy of someone who knew that she could handle whatever was thrown at her.
Until she couldn’t.

She found herself in the emergency room.

Simply put, Rhonda had collapsed both physically and emotionally. The constant stress, the high stakes, the never-ending workload left her with Hashimoto’s, Fibromyalgia, Adrenal Fatigue, and Epstein Barr virus. Depleted, exhausted, but unbroken, she began the process of healing and determining what was important.

Now, as a Performance Strategist and as the Founder of Undeniable Impact Coaching, she helps entrepreneurs thrive in the same way that she thrives and teaches high achievers how they really can have it all - more professional success, more joy, more physical/mental/emotional stamina, and a life in line with their values - as long as they know what “it all” looks like for them.

My guest today, Gül Sönmez, worked in big multinationals like P&G, Coca-Cola, and Amazon for 15 years. Then, roughly 8 years ago, she noticed she was manifesting injuries and pain on her physical body (neck, meniscuses, back, and thyroids).

Even though she had a nice job, a nice marriage, and a nice home, her picture-perfect life was giving her no purpose or meaning, and it was wreaking havoc on her body.

Gül searched for solutions with modern medicine and therapies, but nothing could help her inner pain. She became obsessed with self-healing and studied three different religions, read more than a hundred healing books, and practiced Shamanism, breathwork, kundalini, EFT, and more... but something was always missing.

Her path radically changed in 2017 when she left Turkey and moved to Luxembourg, leaving her job, marriage, friends, and teachers behind for a corporate job with Amazon. This path led her to work with her first client: a friend’s son had a brain surgery on a tumor and she asked if she could go to the hospital for healing. It looked like she was his healer, but in reality he was hers.

As the famous poet Rumi famously said, “What you seek is seeking you.”

From there, the demand for her work exploded, and Gül began working with many clients from various backgrounds and religions. She earned her coaching certification and began combining the healing modalities and energy work skills she’d accumulated over the years during her sessions.

Gül’s path shifted once more in 2019 when she started to become a clear channel for her and her clients’ energies; they were revealing buried memories and root causes of traumas without her even asking. Leaning into this intense calling, she left her job and traveled around the world for months, learning how to channel and incorporate it all into her practice. This journey helped her to discover herself, realize her fears, and gave her the courage to completely change everything in her life!

Gül now serves clients from all around the world, forging her path as a 6-figure entrepreneur through her unique transformational energy work. In her own words, she is “not healing or sending energies to make you feel better for a short period of time; you are walking along this transformational path to initiate profound changes in your inner world.”

Another short story:

"It was summer in England. You know those rare days that are pure and utter magic. I’d driven down from London to the country and was in a great mood.

We met in the ‘cottage’ - a cute thatched roof building that housed the company meeting room... a few squishy sofas around a coffee table. My new friends and owners of an international luxury company spilled their branding challenges and frustrations.

‘’But at the heart of it, I know I’m struggling with imposter syndrome. I ran a huge team when I worked in corporate, but here in my own business I feel incapable’.

Wow! I was floored.

This magnificent woman sitting in front of me shared her deepest challenge.  She’d been a key player in well known global brands, and yet a few years into her own brand she heard that voice of ‘who do you think you are’.

Listen to hear the rest of this story...

My guest today is Cherie Burton - a pioneering spiritual psychologist with a powerful story.  Mother of six, author, international speaker she is passionately driven to guide women influencers to heal, express and create, using the “new feminine leadership paradigm.”

She earned her degrees in psychology and sociology, and was crowned Mrs. Utah 2004. But much of her work was inspired by the tragic suicide of her twin sister and what led was an obsessive quest to break family patterns and crack the code on depression.

We chat about:

  • The link between strong women, high achievers and trauma
  • What embodiment really means
  • What actually is divine feminine and the new feminine leadership paradigm
  • How your clothes affect how you feel

A short story about anxiety

"I was staying with my friend who lives on the magnificent Sunshine Coast in Australia. We’d had a great day, walking along the coastline for hours and hours. Chatting, being inspired, stopping to take photos.

The next morning, my friend, Di, asked me, ‘how did you sleep’.

I said, ‘I slept well, but this morning I'm feeling a little anxious’.

Di stopped, put down the cup she was holding, took a breath, smiled and said, ‘Gosh Merilyn, don’t we all feel that?’.

If I was the type of person to say ‘boom’, this is one of those moments...

Boom. Nailed it.
Major ah-ha moment.

She was right.
We all feel anxious.
All of us.

We all feel fear.
We all feel down.

And that’s okay.

The absence of anxiety isn’t my goal anymore.

It’s being aware of it.
And being kind to it.

And... remembering my significance.

Because it’s easy to forget that."

Oh wow Merilyn.
You have a decision to make.
Do I change the name of my podcast, and indeed my main course?

Lead Your Day.
Lead Your World.

They are pretty aspirational titles.
But how much cringe factor is attached to them?

To be honest (isn’t that a funny phrase we use)... they are a hangover from my preacher church days. An implore to ‘stand up and be leaders’.
Which is a noble thing.

I really believe in leadership.
Inspiring leadership.

Not narcissistic leadership.
Not patriarchy leadership.

I DO believe in leadership.
In the power of it.

Especially for women.
Especially for women leaders.

We need a bunch more of them.
Or rather, we need a bunch more of leaders who have the masculine and feminine in balance.
Conscious leaders.
Awake leaders.

But do those titles, Lead Your Day / Lead Your World scream an order?
Do they attach guilt? Or pressure?
Because they aren’t intended to.

The most important word is ‘your’.
Your world.
Your day.

They aren’t some kind of carpe diem message of ‘lead THE day’.

Okay.
I’ve decided.

For the time being.
I’ll keep Lead Your Day.

It’s aspirational. It’s calling us on. And up.
And it’s do-able.

I can lead my next five minutes.
I can lead my morning.
I can lead my day.
I’m in charge. I’m not a victim.
I might feel anxious right now.
I might have had a bad nights sleep.
Or just got an email that sucked.

But I’m the one leading my life right now.

A few weeks ago I was driving home from Mothers Day lunch with the (ex) mother-in-law. Too-ing and fro-ing in anxiety about whether I should have let my son drive home to get his driving practice hours up, but feeling the need for an hour without that anxiety.

My mother-in-law lives in the ‘posh’ part of Sydney.
Down by the harbour.
Down by all the nice houses.

My car and body knew the way home automatically, so that allowed me the luxury of daydreaming.

I looked at all the houses, and silently said to myself...

‘You aren’t like them. You’ll never get to live in a gorgeous place like that’.

And I sunk into the familiar 'mood'.

But suddenly, the ‘knower’ that is listening to the pity-voice said, ‘well if you keep thinking like that, you’ll only keep thinking like that. The people in those homes you love aren’t any better than you, so go on, see yourself owning one.’

My left cheek stung from the slap.

And my other familiar 'mood' put on its party shoes.

I wriggled in my seat, feeling suddenly proud of myself for ‘leading my mind’ at that very moment. Leading it a little better that a few minutes ago.

I said nothing out loud, and navigated onto the highway.
Still on autopilot.

Suddenly, a gorgeous new blue convertible mini passed us on the ‘fast lane’.

Oh wow - we both said in unison!

Immediately my default brain silently said,

‘I’m the person that doesn’t get to have one of those’.

But this time, as I was already a 5 minute mindset expert from my previous self-coaching effort,

So instead, I said out loud: ‘You know Luca, I see that dream car go by and I say to myself, ‘Poor me, I’ll never have one of those’,

Proudly stroking my own ego because I was about to launch into giving my son a lesson on life and how our thoughts determine our lives.

Luca stopped me before I got that far.

“We all think like that mum”.

My right cheek also now stinging!

Out of the mouth-of-babes, right!

And so we both agreed to change the internal dialogue to ‘oooh, there goes my dream car... I can see myself in an orange version of that’.

But before we got to the eye-rolling stage of mum over-doing the life-lesson, Luca switched up the volume on the music.

And we both rode the mood home, singing along to The Greatest Showman soundtrack at the top of our lungs.

I’ve sooo been looking forward to chatting with Sophie MacLean. When you go to Sophie’s website immediately you are confronted (in a peaceful way) by a statement, ‘suffering is optional’.  She gets your attention.  She’s very very clear - I love that conviction and clarity - that her mission is to contribute to the creation of a new culture for humankind… self awareness, consciousness.

An absolutely fascinating and intriguing life…. Born in Algeria, educated in Morocco and France, with a professional career in the USA and UK, Sophie has led an eventful life.  She has been a helicopter pilot, a teacher, a designer, a relief worker, a war refugee, a CEO, and served as a United Nations representative on The Commission on the Status of Women’s Hunger Project.

And yes, she has been shot at, shipwrecked, and widowed.

She has lived on a farm, a boat, a penthouse, and in an ashram.

Now, as a wisdom teacher, Sophie has spent decades leading transformational seminars around the universal existential questions of “Who and what am I?” and “What is my life about?”

She founded Alchemy+Aim in 2013, naming it for the transformation that takes place when the science and technology of web development meets the human aspect of what those websites were designed for.

From being born in a mud hut, her mother dying at birth, then being abandoned at a Nigerian orphanage, Femi's life is a series of fascinating crossroads. She was adopted by an English family and raised in London and went on to have a wonderful career on stage and screen all over the world. Our chat covers all the crossroads that have so far made up her life story - and a challenge for us to look at how we respond to the circumstances in our own lives.  You'll also witness, as you listen, a few precious and emotional moments.

Femi is best known for her cult Star Wars role as Oola, the doomed dancer to Jabba The Hutt in Return of the Jedi.  She also was an original London cast member in CATS.  Whilst she still gets invited to Sci-fi conventions all over the world (yes, she still fits into her Star Wars costume and hasn't aged), she has retrained into architectural design and lives in Denmark with her family.

The other day I was doing a coaching call with someone and they asked,

'Merilyn, now that there's this new ClubHouse social media platform, do we have to get on that now too?'

"Noooooooo", I said... "Not unless it really lights you up"

Listen, if you are marketing online, and who isn't... you'll know that there's pressure from the experts and gurus to be on all the social media platforms...

Be visible.
Do this. Do that.

But think about this for a minute.

How many times have you bought into someones system or methodology, whether literally in terms of a paid course etc, or just hearing them sprout off on social media, and you've had that feeling of , 'gosh, if I don't' do what they are suggesting I am missing out'.

Well, listen to your heart.
It knows best.

If you are coming from a place of:

  • feeling behind
  • feeling outdated
  • feeling that something is missing unless...

Then that system or methodology, or new social media platform isn't going to work for you.

And it'll only cause you stress.

Last year, as I was running a live workshop, we came up with the phrase: "your wow, not theirs".

It's really a good principle to live by.

Now in case you are wondering, 'wow' isn't an acronym for anything.

It literally mean's 'wow', as in... 'expressing astonishment or admiration' or 'a sensational success'.

My personal definition is that it's your 'thing', that thing that you do well.

Others might say superpower, but that's overrated and a little overused.

I'm a little sick and tired of influencer-driven hype.
'This launch or sales system worked for me... so buy it and use it and you'll get the success I've have'.

Rubbish.

That system worked for you, because it's yours. And it suits your personality.

We need to talk more about personality driven marketing.
Not 'Personality', but 'personality'.
Your personality.

In other words:

  • not everyone has to be 'visible' all the time
  • not everyone has to go live every day, or even every week
  • not everyone has to email every day or every week
  • you don't have to be on every platform
  • you don't have to do live marketing promotions

Unless of course you want to but are just afraid.

So why are we affected by this?

Because we aren't confident in our own abilities.

Our own wow.

Yes we can learn from others. I believe wholeheartedly from education.

But please look at the Personality behind the education.

Or the Personality behind the sales pitch.

If you feel uncomfortable it's likely not going to work for you.

So figure out your wow

And follow your wow, not theirs.

If the news has stirred you this week… stirred you not in drama or fear, but witha a ‘something must be done’ kind of reaction… please see the leadership calling on your life.

Girls… we need more change-makers in power. Divinely powerful. Divinely loving. Personalities who yes have great strategies and policies, but who most of all are evolved personalities.

I loved the live that Donald Miller, of StoryBrand did on Instagram this week, that in Washington we are witnessing an Enneagram 8 in disintegration. 8’s can be amazing leaders, but when they are immature, un-evolved or disintegrating, they can try and tear down everything around them.

So this episode is a rallying cry. A call not to get wrapped up in the drama. A call to speak out. A call to step up in your own leadership this year.

Not shrink back. Not play small.

Heal those parts of us that history, patriarchy, religion, traumas, education, government has defined us by. Because your little (or big) world NEEDS YOU more than ever.

It’s so easy to get caught up in reactive mode to everything that’s happening in the world right now, isn’t it? I’m made it a habit to stay off the news and the main feeds of Facebook (I only use Facebook for Groups), to keep my headspace clear. The news of the last few days, whilst not surprising, has again shown us just how critical the need is for great leadership. And great leadership is conscious leadership.

Over the last few weeks I’ve become even more clear about who I serve and why… and I will definitely go to my grave trying to help women become leaders.

And helping to redefine what ‘leader’ means in the first place - detaching it from any corporate, patriarchal context.

Girls, my desire is that in 2021 we become more:

Leaders of ourselves - our headspace, your time-use, clarity of calling.

Real, down-to-earth influencers (not the Instagram kind). Let’s be people who are ‘followed’ because of our character and values.

Leaders of our income, businesses and causes. We need financially savvy and strong women. Let’s not settle for ‘getting by’.

I’m not asking you all to run empires. We aren’t all built that way.

I’m asking that we listen to the call of leadership.

My desire is to help as many women as I can not only build strong, robust businesses, but become change-makers and true influencers and wake up to the calling of conscious leadership.

Who’s with me?

Yeah, we all know 2020 was... different.  And we also know that New Year Resolutions don't have much chance at making it past February.  So this episode isn't about 'let's review our year' and set big audacious goals (although that can be fun).

I'm actually not big on spending hours reflecting back, and I know some self development teachers advocate a review day, but honestly, who has the time.  So when my mastermind buddy shared her 321 exercise with me I thought I'd do it myself and share it with you.

I actually have a quick daily habit of writing down a couple of 'learning points' each day (see Podcast 5).  But this 321 exercise is a fab little exercise to help you set your direction for the new year.

It's not often you come across someone who started an industry! Jessica Rhodes is one such person - she created the podcast booking industry in 2013 when she founded Interview Connections. She's an inspiring, self-published author and podcaster herself.

Along with her business partner, Margy Feldhuhn whom I interviewed on the show a few weeks ago, Jessica has quickly scaled Interview Connections to over $1M in annual revenue with nearly no direct marketing or advertising. Their team of in house Booking Agents are the podcast powerhouses behind many successful entrepreneurs and businesses including Ali Brown, Perry Marshall, Aweber, USA Financial and more.

She is the acclaimed author of Interview Connections: How to #RockThePodcast From Both Sides of the Mic and has been a featured speaker at Podfest Multimedia Expo and FinCon.

One thing I've noticed over and over in the online coaching and education industry is an abundance of marketing training, but a lack of great teaching and experience in Managership. My guest today is Kris Plachy, who more than fills that gap.

Economists are describing this year as the The Great Reset and the New Normal. And I believe it’s a great reset in many ways - we don’t want to go back to how we worked. We want to lead our time differently.

Following on from yesterday's episode, I'm chatting about three areas or trends that are being reset in The Great Reset of 2020:

  • Why 'I am allowed' is the new 'I am enough'
  • New Leadership isn't about superior positioning or 'a higher conversation'.
  • Capacity, not mindset, is the solution.

I have to admit I’ve been pretty chilled the last couple of months. My body is refusing to work the way I’ve done for years. And The Great Reset of 2020 is becoming a very personal great reset.

I am, or were, very driven. Back in January I even set an ambitious task of doing a daily podcast. But I’ve slowed down. And it feels great.

But it took a few weeks to process a bit of guilt and self judgement. A few weeks of RESETTING. Oh, don’t get me wrong, my core personality is still there. My core driver is still Vision (because I’m a VisionMaker WowArchetype)

But this reset is sharpening that vision. And the method to that vision isn’t hijacking my nervous system anymore. (Which, btw, goes to prove even more that your wow archetype can evolve, but that’s a discussion for another time!)

All week I’m sharing what makes me tick. And One of the things that is sharpening is about what really matters to me. So here goes… they aren’t in order, but simple a brainstorm of things that inspire me. A two-part episode about what I value right now.

What happens when you outgrow your goals? In this episode Jo Bendle shares her 'what next' after seeing her dream of successful location independent dream come true. A lively chat about about why what we've been taught about productivity doesn't work, the power of mindset work and how to have clarity. This episode is a smorgasbord of ah-ha's.

The official bit:Jo is a Productivity + Empowerment Coach helping female business owners do more, be more and have more while working less. She helps women navigate the mindset struggles that hold them back from living a bigger life, hook into their future vision and equip them with the productivity tools they need to get there.

Highlights:"I knew very very clearly that this wasn't what I was meant to be doing but it was a stepping stone... I share that because I wish people would give themselves permission to see where it (life) takes them."

"You don't HAVE to have all the clarity at the start!"

"For me there is no point giving them masculine productivity tools if I don't ALSO give them the feminine mindset work. We need both!"

"Nothing will change it will always revert back to the pattern if we don't work on the inner gain."

Jo uses a technique to restrict herself from thinking small and self doubt by saying "What would the real Jo do?"

Jo also says the best way to defeat self-doubt and restrictions is routine and structure. The more structure and routine, the easier it is.

A casual chat with Monica Perez Burnett about being real and enjoying the 'networking' you do online. There is so much pressure to do things that our personalities might not be comfortable - this episode discusses this - that emotion and nervousness is okay.

Some of the great quotes from this episode include:

"Don't be afraid to be human. We need more than ever now to have that human touch. We're sick of the polish. We're sick of the professionalism- We want reality."

"What we actually take away from a presentation is the energy and who the person is.
We often, after the live, don't remember all your perfect three points.
All your crafted curated quotes. We remember that that person went live and that they were real."

"Business is not about your product, at all. Business is about how you can bring the extra, how you can bring the legacy building part into someones life THROUGH your product. What they want is you, if you're not willing to bring you to the table. It's going to be very hard to build relationships and get sales."

"Do you understand how you're helping your audience?" Will you let fear stop you helping your audience?

"I could give you all the possible notes on swimming, on how to swim. But you will not learn anything until you actually get into the pool."

I had one of those ah-ha moment conversations again a few days ago. One of my mentors said ‘Merilyn, you run at high energy, even when excited (rather than stressed)... your nervous system isn’t getting into parasympathetic state enough’. 😳

He was right. Being a VisionMaker too doesn’t help.

And the weird 2020 agenda is definitely not helping either! Pile on the collective stress that the planet is experiencing, and our nervous systems are put to the test.

Over in LeadYourWorld Entrepreneurs, we did our seasonal Planathon last week. Part of the process is re-looking at our ideal week. As my business has grown a lot over the last 12 months I’ve tended to just make my days fuller, without being aware of the toll on my nervous system (as gosh, I’m excited, not stressed). So as I was looking at my ideal week template I realised my ‘free’ time wasn’t getting me into a parasympathetic state! It was crash state (I do love the escapism of tv shows).

So this is how I’m starting to fix it - I have gone back to buckets/blocks/windows of 3 hours with clear boundaries. I tend to rebel when I have a schedule to follow (I love being spontaneous), but it means I’m saying yes to too many things... so I’m changing that.

I’ve called my 3-6pm window/bucket ‘Parasympathetic Window’. If you’ve ever done IF you’ll get the concept. So I’m not doing any coaching or being online (no screen time either), or even sitting in my office during that time.

I could say I’m ‘excited’ about this, but let’s say I’m calmly at peace about it instead.

I’m my own guinea pig. The nervous system is at the heart of my Lead Your World framework - it’s not possible to truly lead your self, lead others or lead your brand if we can’t lead our nervous system first.

Let’s see how I go - I’m an experiment in process.

I'll tell you how I'm going soon.

In this incredible interview, Miquel Brown shares her stories of brushes with the Ku Klux Klan, dating David Bowie and what it was like growing up in the USA, along with her thoughts on the sad death of George Floyd.

When you meet Miquel Brown, the first thing you'll notice is her big warm smile. Her energy, her enthusiasm, and her love for people stand out and you might find you become great friends.

This is exactly what happened with us over 20 years ago. It wasn't until after we became friends that I discovered she has 6 gold records, 1 platinum album, has acted in movies such as French Kiss, Fantastic Beasts, American Haunting, Rollerball, Superman, as well as endless performances in the West End. Wow!

She's one of the most humble people I know and is still busy working, juggling multiple entrepreneurial and creative projects in her 7th decade. Miquel was born in Motown and is the mother of singer Sinitta and stepsister of Amii Stewart.

When we think of leadership we often think it's about taking big ACTION. Which is true. But it's only half the story. A great leader also knows when it's time to ALLOW. I call this the yin and yang of leadership, or the feminine and masculine of leadership. Knowing which energy to operate in, and when brings not only balance, but reduces stress and makes for much more creative leadership. This episode explores this topic.

Bumps. Funny how we instinctively know what do when we face them...

Get a nasty bump on the head? Put a pack of frozen peas on it. Or as my Grandma suggested - a lump of butter!

Bumps in the road? Then slow down quick - you don’t want to take the bottom out of your car.

Mozzy bites? Rub lavender oil on them.

Or bump into an old friend and we go grab a coffee (if they were a good friend).

But what about the proverbial BUMPS IN LIFE?

And even worse… those bumps you are facing in your business?

In this episode I explore how those business bumps can be good!  A quick episode to help shed some light on what you are going through right now.

Kirsty is a true serial entrepreneur. When I first worked with her 20 years ago she was moving from award-winning nurse to setting up her own photography business. She now runs not only an award winning photo studio (clients have included the Prince of Wales), but also owns and runs an award winning vineyard in New Zealand. Her latest venture sees her being the first person in the world to be licensed to grow hemp in vineyards.

This interview will leave you inspired and encouraged - as you hear about her wins and mistakes as an entrepreneur.

Here's a little bit more about Kirsty....

Kirsty is the first person to be licensed for growing hemp in vineyards, and has 2 more years of a 4 year research trial ahead of her. The aim: to prove that the hemp doesn’t take nutrients or vigour from the vines, doesn’t negatively affect wine quality, improves soil organic matter and increases beneficial insect life. Her vineyard produces equivalent to 1 million bottles of premium Sauvignon Blanc each year, so her trials are crucial to ensure their current high value crop isn’t negatively affected.

Coming from the small town of Te Puke originally, Kirsty Harkness started her career as a Kidney Transplant speciality nurse. But being a natural entrepreneur, she has shifted and changed many times since. She launched herself into business in 2005 by founding a successful photography agency TIGERTIGER, followed closely in 2007 by co-founding Mount Base Vineyards, a 68ha vineyard in the beautiful Waihopai Valley where she is a proud grower for Villa Maria, Matua and Babich Wines.

Over the years since she has grown both businesses, bought and sold a construction business, is now a 54 hectare licensed hemp grower and has recently co-founded Hark & Zander, a natural skin care company using hemp oils.

In her spare time she is on the Board of NZ Hemp Industries, Board of Wine Marlborough, is Chair of the NZ Hemp Media working group, and Women in wine Marlborough for good measure.More details: merilyn.com

Over the last few years a new job title as emerged… ‘Influencer’

Born out of Instagram.

The hashtag #influencer has over 20.6 million posts.

20.6 million!

We see it in people’s bios, ‘I’m an influencer’.

But seriously, saying that is like saying, ‘I have influence, and you don’t’

Bollocks.

In actual fact, even the most introverterted person…

The term ‘influencer’ is a compliment that is given by others TO you, not a job title, status, position or something for your Instagram Bio! Its not a self ascribed term.

It actually makes my skin crawl when I see someone stating ‘influencer’ and it makes me pity them even more when they have only 134 followers and every picture is of them wearing some kind of designer label they hope will notice and make them their brand ambassador!

I know what you mean though. An Instagram Influencer is someone who basically sells products for others! Be it tooth whitening gel. shoes, makeup, hair products, jeans… you name it. The sky is the limit as long as you have the right hashtags

But what you really are is chasing… wishing… hoping.. longing for… FAME!

But...

Being an influencer is what you as a business owner is SUPPOSED to be.

This also applies to ‘thought leader’ and even ‘public figure’…

Being an influencer is A GREAT ASPIRATION and goal. It should be on every entrepreneurs 20 year vision board!

But REAL INFLUENCE is about you achieving a level of success in business and life, which then puts you in a leadership status.

Leadership should be the goal of every business owner. Every entrepreneur.

Yes you already have the status of leader if you run your own business, but true LEADERSHIP is when you’ve achieved that level of status and it INSPIRES AND INFLUENCES others.

Not something you state in your bio!

Sure, get someone else to say it of you. Include a quote. A testimony. As yes, it ads to your credibility and authority fo those who don’t know you yet.

But please. Oh please… stop calling yourself an ‘Influencer’.

So stop calling yourself that. And just stand up and start leading.

What fuels the success of leaders? Resilience

What if all the things that happened TO you were happing FOR you.

Those 'failures' and 'set backs' and 'delays' and 'traumas' and 'disappointments'... what if these were the making of you?

What if (and this sounds harsh, but hear me out) they were there to help you get to where you really want to go?

To teach you? To shape you? To evolve and transform you into the person you really want to be?

If you see your past as wisdom then you've passed the test of resilience.

But if you are still seeing much failure and set back, can you think of what they are trying to tell you?

What would turn what you are going through right now into wisdom

And here’s an exercise I’d love you to do. Go sit somewhere quiet, and ask yourself this question.

It’s 5 years from now. You are looking back at 2020 and all the great things that came out of if, both for you personally and your business and your relationships. Because you were resilient.

Write down what happened.

Then believe it.

Once upon a time, when I finished university, the world was in recession. It was a bummer, as I'd spent 6 loooong years studying for an Architecture degree.

But there were no jobs.

The recession at the time (early 1990's) meant that most of my graduating class had to delay their dreams.

Instead, I pivoted in a new direction.

I went into photography, which led to a move to training & development, which led to me moving to the UK for an international company... which let me to consulting (specifically change management and business strategy)... which ultimately led me to start my own brand.

Massive personal change (i.e trauma, although we don't like to call it that) led to a wake up call. And that wake up call stirred in me to start my own business.

In a recession!

I also remember clearly the crash in 2008.

I remember clearly the emotional overwhelm and stress that many went through. I remember clearly my husband being one of the first wave of people to lose his job. Whilst at the same time I was working with and helping brands THRIVE during that very same recession.

Looking back, I can see now that during every recession, every downturn, every 'doom and gloom' report, I found myself either personally pivoting my career or helping others through it.

I guess I'm very much at home during disruptive, changing times. I don't meant the literally 'home' that we are all experiencing.

I've helped lead multiple businesses and organisations through either massive change and/or recession and out the other side... stronger!

But here's a twist...

Whilst I've always been known for wearing productivity jogging shoes (aka people would say my superpowers include strategy, organisation and getting stuff done).

...when I started building my own personal brand, the entrepreneurial rollercoaster sent me to physical and emotional crash.

What worked in corporate didn't work as an entrepreneur.

I needed a productivity ‘cure’.

It wasn't just about strategy, planning and taking action (although that's important). It's also about how we handle (thrive/lead) change. How we ride the emotional impact of not only building our own business, but doing it with uncertain outcomes.

And that's why and how I first developed my popular programme: The Productivity Cure 1.0.

I took my decades of experience and developed a new system for myself. And it worked… even whilst juggling solo-parenting and recovering from adrenal fatigue.

I'm about to teach The Productivity Cure 2.0 - updated for the disruptive times we are living right now.

The Productivity Cure 2.0Live, online, open workshop | 14-23 April 2020

The phrase 'crushing it' has become part of the entrepreneurs lexicon. It's sounds great when Gary V says it, but should you?

So many of the hashtags we share and the words we use are just everyone following everyone else - and incredibly masculine. But the answer isn’t to adopt powder-pink as your brand colours or use the hashtag #bossbabe either. The businesses that are going to survive any kind of big or small economic shake up are the ones who aren’t me-too businesses, but are leading by doing things differently. Business isn't a war, a competition or a hunt. This episode challenges us to think and behave differently - as women and men, and not just blindly follow the rules of patriarchy.

Yesterday I was on a call with a friend who is wanting to grow her business. We had a fun time chatting, dreaming big and strategising. At the end of the call she asked.... "so what about Facebook and all the social media stuff? I hear so much differing advice, so how do I know what to follow?". I smiled, leaned forward, looked her squarely in the eyes and said, "Do you want to know what the real secret of social media is?". Listen to this episode and you'll find out what I said to her!

You've probably heard me use the phrase LEAD YOUR WORLD a lot.

I don't mean lead THE world, although there's definitely a leadership crisis in much of the world right now.

But being a leader of your world is at the heart of what I do. Because unless we can be the leader of our own lives we can't really successfully create our own incomes... or be the leader of our own businesses.

When I say 'world' I mean that sphere of influence that you have on the outside - are you inspiring, influencing, empowering those around you? And I also mean, the inner world as well - are you leading your thoughts, your emotional reactions, your health, you wellbeing?

The opposite to leading your world is being a follower or a reactor to life. We are all naturally well trained at doing that. Just think of social media. How much time do you spend following what everyone else does, and not being your own unique self leading your won way. I'm not saying that following is wrong, as we can learn a lot by being a follower.

But are we a sheep blindly following? Or are we the leader of our own life.

The other opposite of leading is REACTING. This is probably the true antonym of leading. Reacting to what happens subconsciously.

So... how can you be a better leader of your world?

When I was a really young, like 3-4, I used to want to be invisible. Then I went through a super shy phase and I couldn’t even smile when a camera was out. When I was 13 I got my hair cut really short and I remember a boy in my class saying ‘who do you think you are’!

I wasn’t raised to lead. Most of us aren’t. So we feel awkward saying ‘I’m an expert in.....’

But we must. As an entrepreneur, artist, author, photographer, ________ (fill in the blank), we must be brave and be known for something. We must take the lead. In something. And it’s more than a matter of positioning, although that is key if you want to grow a great business.

Otherwise we are invisible and our worlds miss out on what we have to give. So here’s a question... what are you known for? What are you the best at? What are you the leader in?

Time to lead. Our world needs you. Who do you think you are? You are remarkable.

We've all tried affirmations, quotes, retreats, will-power and even therapy... so why are we still hitting a glass ceiling? In this podcast I chat about what has worked and what has worked for me in working with my mindset for over 30 years.

There are many types of bees and they are vital little critters in the health of our world... but what on earth what have they got to do with building a business? Well, my clients know that I talk about three particular bees all the time to help them really 'get' the business building analogy.

See which bees you identify with...

🐝

The first is the HONEY BEE.

Now this one is described as a very social bee. I think of this bee as the marketing and client contact bee. Important in any business. This is the bee that is making Instagram stories all day long! and certain personalities thrive being the Honey Bee.

🐝

Then there's the WORKER BEE.

This one gets the jobs done. Ticks off the to-do's. Does the work. Builds the website. Sends the emails. Does the admin. You get the picture. It's often the primary role of most business owners and they can get stuck here and it can stop them growing. Doing doing doing.

🐝

And finally there is the Queen Bee. She is responsible for the growth of the hive (via laying eggs of course) and she is pivotal to everything that happens in a healthy bee hive. This is the role that many business owners avoid - we don't spend enough time playing the leader our business and so we don't grow.

Bee experts would probably correct me on my science, but bee-with me enough to get the point... Most of us are worker bees first, honey bees second and queen bees third. Our business needs all working together, but without the Queen Bee the hive falls apart.

When did you last spend quality time working ON your business, rather than just in it?
And do you have time scheduled to bee all those bees?

Sorry Kevin, your Field Of Dreams philosophy just doesn't work with marketing!

So many women meet with 'resistance' when it comes to marketing, especially those who have yet to make the leap from side-income to abundance. They have the 'build it and they will come' mentality, sometimes without even realising it. They stay in hobby-mode for way too long and it comes from a distorted view of marketing.  This resistance is rooted in fear. Fear of visibility, fear of rejection, fear of failure. And it doesn't help when every second ad that follows us around on social media is promising us the marketing 'hacks of 7 figure entrepreneurs'.

In this podcast I chat about a completely different way to view marketing - and it's got nothing to do with any latest method or sales funnel. Listen and let your whole mindset about marketing be challenged.

I've completely changed my mind on these subjects. The usual advice goes something along the lines of 'get a bigger vision', 'get organised' and to make sure you have 'me time'. Which sounds right... but is it? This puts us in the blame seat, as if we are doing something wrong - and I no longer believe this is the full story. This episode looks at burnout, overwhelm and exhaustion from a trauma-informed approach - I think you'll find it a welcome and refreshing point of view. Shownotes: merilyn.com

Stop Striving, start Flowing. We hear the word 'flow' a lot lately. But what does it really mean? And how do we move from a place of striving to a state of flow? Especially when we are being told constantly to 'push harder', 'get over ourselves' and 'hustle'. This short episode is food for thought around the whole subject. merilyn.com

The self-help and personal development industries have lied to us! They tell us to "fix ourselves", "get over ourselves"... and so we get on the hamster wheel of self improvement and are still left asking, "What's wrong with me?"

She has worked with hundreds of high-achieving women and discovered that they issues they all struggle with are not just personal (the 'what's wrong with me') - they're rooted in the ancestral and collective trauma experienced by women in the patriarchal world for millennia.
