“We aren’t born knowing how to be awesome at everything. We have to spend our time learning. And our knowledge grows with one exposure at a time. We can speed up the process if we have examples to follow or get really focused but it still requires effort. No matter how old we become. Self-care is no different. If you’re feeling like you’re doing self-care wrong, you aren’t! It takes time to understand your intangible needs. The needs that are hidden beneath the surface and can’t always be verbalized. ”

“So I have a confession. I've been feeling what Michelle Obama has been feeling. A low grade depression that has become an undercurrent that ends up coloring everything around me. It has manifested outwardly in several ways. Most notably, I haven't been as consistent with posting podcast episodes because at the end of the day I have to ask myself, what will help me to feel 1% better? On most days it hasn't been trying to make sense of my self-care or emotions or actions or thoughts and then recording it for the world to hear. ”

“You know that feeling you get when you realize that you forgot something when you’re ten minutes down the road and you have to decide, do I stop and go back and get it? Or do I just keep moving forward and improvise? Today I left my phone in my car and by choice, it was 4 hours before I retrieved it again. I didn’t realize I was addicted to it, not really, until this moment.”

“For the past week I have been taking a trip down nostalgia lane and it has been so incredibly restorative. I’m Present-Focused by nature so it was different to allow myself to slip into Past-Focused mode and just stay there. If these concepts are foreign to you, never fear, check out previous episodes because I go into more details! I’ve just been in a state where I just haven’t wanted to do real-time reflection. It can actually get a bit exhausting when you’re constantly asking yourself, “What does this meaaaaaaan?” Sometimes it doesn’t mean anything at all.”

“I decided to let my “Mental Health Day” last a week! Why? Because why not? I was processing some pretty heavy emotions and they weren’t the kind that you just snap out of. I think we feel as though we need to “get better quick” because it’s uncomfortable for the people around us or we don’t want to be a burden but I let my emotions be exactly what they were. I didn’t water down what I was feeling. I didn’t feel like I needed to “be a certain way” because here’s one thing I feel confidently in: my “too much”ness is just the right amount. You can handle me at that level or not at all. Part of self-care for me is not apologizing for myself.”

“I decided yesterday evening that I needed a “Mental Health Day” today. I was feeling a lot of emotions and most of it was coming from conversations I was having, and I had just had enough. I know myself. I have a certain threshold and I had reached it. I didn’t want to have to be mindful of the words I was saying. I didn’t want to have to be overly aware of someone else’s emotional baggage and try to compensate for it. I didn’t want to have to care or be nurturing for anyone else because I was the one who needed the nurturing. And only I know what I truly need.”

"I recently delivered 40 personal postcards to my neighbors on my apartment floor. Don’t worry. I delivered them with a mask and gloves. I even said so right on the postcard to alleviate all fears. Pre-Covid days I would have actually knocked on doors but I had to get creative because I like knowing who my neighbors are. It’s also been harder to meet new people in general because meetups are happening online and people aren’t as receptive to chatting up a stranger out in the world, even if you’re both wearing masks. So the postcard was my way of saying hello first."

“It rolled off my tongue so easily. I was in a conversation with someone and they made a pretty bold declaration and my immediate response was YET. Y-E-T. It may not be reality now but it can be in the future. And if you want it to be in the future, you better start adding YET to the end of those declarations. Especially the ones that are focused on what you're currently lacking. I'm not pregnant. YET. I'm not making a million dollars. YET. I'm not married. YET. I'm not a good sleeper. YET. I'm not a good dancer. YET. I'm not feeling better. YET.”

“Someone reached out today to say that she was having one of those moments where she wanted to do something radical. She was feeling the urge to up and move to a different country. She admitted that whenever she feels this way, there’s a part of her that feels in a slump or empty. I’m sharing this because we’ve all be there. And I felt so very honored that she was sharing her emotions with me in real-time when they are really fresh because that’s when we’re the most honest. When you’re ready for something to be different - anything at all - you can feel so restless that you don’t know where to begin.”

“Today was an unsubscribe day! I spent time looking at my email. Really looking at what was coming in and deciding whether it was something I valued enough to actually stop and read RIGHT THEN. Since I’m not really on social media — I try but can never be consistent — email is where my dopamine gets the most hits. It’s why I’m on a gazillion email lists. It’s why I have a graveyard of PDFs that I never actually read but downloaded anyway just to see what people have to say. I love reading interesting things but I started to do an audit and realized that there were only maybe 5 or 6 emails from strangers that I actually looked forward to. The rest were just filler. It felt like noise. If I never received another email I probably wouldn’t miss it. So I decided to raise my standards as an experiment.”

Did I find it? At the very first store! What I’m still thinking about is the unexpected gem that I found while on the journey. I decided to shop in a different part of town then I usually do. “I think the problem arises when we start to judge our days as good or bad days. They are simply DAYS. What happens, happens. So if you’re in the habit of grading each day based on certain qualities you’re setting yourself up for disappointment when other days aren’t like that. If you’ve made a declaration like, “It can only be a good day if…” you’ve already shortened your list of possibilities.”

There's just this low level dread in the pit of your stomach that you can't shake. Something doesn't feel right. And instead of honoring that and listening to that feeling you still go forward because you can remind yourself of all the reasons why it will probably be okay. “Since reaching Episode 100 I’ve been on this deep dive of what it means to truly celebrate something, and I’ve decided that the first thing to go is putting a time limit on it. 5 days later and yep, it’s still celebration time, and in some ways it’s more meaningful this way! Celebration is not something that is locked into a certain day or time. There shouldn’t be a 24-hour expiration date. I like to think that it’s beyond. This is why restaurants allow you to claim a birthday dessert the entire month of your birthday. If you didn’t know that, now you know! I’ve been cutting my celebrations too short and that stops now.”

“We’ve all been guilty of it. Having this thought…”I just need to figure out this ONE thing, and then everything else will fall into place.” Whether it be our careers. Our relationships. Our next meal. We have a tendency to pinpoint the hold up in our lives to ONE thing. Why? I haven’t got a clue, but one thing feels more manageable. One thing is often more painful than others in our lives at any given moment so it rises to the top of our minds. But when it comes to self-care we have to be careful of trying to find our self-care unicorn. ”

There should be no part of me that is expecting someone else to be just as excited, to understand exactly what it means to me, or to help me figure it out. Somehow the key has remained with new apartments, new cars and new jobs, and I can’t even remember the last time that I’ve used it. It’s just something I carry with me and even though it MIGHT be useful, it actually isn’t because whatever it opens, I don’t even remember that I have access to it, and it isn’t helping me in my day-to-day life. I wasn’t interested so my response was, “No,” and just like that, there was a shift in the air. It was obvious that this friend was not expecting to hear that answer. The typical expected response to a question like that is an enthusiastic yes because our default mode is geared towards solidifying connection and making sure others feel….I don’t know…important? "I’ve been having lots of interesting conversations lately, and the theme has been around value. The value we place on ourselves. The value we place on our talents. The value we place on our time. The value we place on anything at all. My question for you today is this: How are you deciding what’s valuable? What is it based on? We all have a point of reference that we’re using and I want to challenge all of us to burn it to the ground. I realized that I can be guilty of deciding what something is worth based on what feels realistic instead of how I want things to be. I typically want things to be over the top! And there’s nothing wrong with that but if I’m honest with myself, depending on the thing, my default mode can be to de-value instead of over-value. Anyone else?"

"Did you know that you are 100% human? With 100% needs? And that everyone else is also 100% human with 100% needs. There is nothing that you need that someone else doesn’t need too. And that’s incredible news. It means that you are not required to need less. And no one else is either. That fact doesn’t change no matter the role you may be playing. Boss. Parent. Spouse. Friend. Child. In fact, it is not you who is selfish when you understand that you are at 85% and you need to do things to help you gain that 15% back. It is anyone else that sees you are in need and does nothing to help, especially if they actively try to prevent it and end up taking more percentage away. That is selfish behavior. Having needs is not."

The entire movie is filled with epic training sequences and this kid’s quest to make a name for himself. Thrilling stuff. What struck me the most is just how BADLY this kid wanted to train. He would wake up early. He sacrificed his corporate career and security. He kept pestering Rocky to train him, even if all he could get were training drills that he could do on his own. He was focused. He was disciplined. He knew his THING above all things and it has been such a long time since there has been ANYTHING that I have wanted as bad as this kid wanted to box."

"I am LOVING my new apartment. What I am NOT loving is the outside tree roach that had found its way through a crack in my front door. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, it’s one of those really big roaches that usually live outside and typically aren’t a problem. Except I live in Texas, and everything is bigger in Texas, so when I saw it, it’s only natural that I freaked out. That was days ago. To this day, I keep glancing at my front door expecting to see another one. It has gotten to the point that it’s started to affect my heart. I can’t really relax. I’m a bit worked up. Have you ever felt like that? There’s something that’s bothering you that isn’t resolved yet so you just keep thinking about it. Even if there’s nothing else you can really do in the moment? If you’re super organized and meet lots of new people, you might even add how you know them in parenthesis so it’s easy to remember. Me? I take it one step further. In my phone, my mother’s number is saved as Queen Mother. "

"Freedom is my number one value. For better or worse, it’s the lens that I make most of my decisions through. Will this restrict my freedom in any way? Let me tell you. I can always count the ways but I’ve found that I can’t let my thoughts stop there. Things are never that black and white. There is always the ability to change, especially one’s mind, so in a way, there’s never really any threat to my freedom. Not ever. And that speaks directly to how we can approach our self-care. It doesn’t have to be this rigid idea in our lives. It doesn’t have to look one way. It can be whatever it needs to be on any given day because we are humans with human needs."

"I have nothing against Marie Kondo. She’s utterly fabulous, but the question, “Does this bring me joy?” has never really resonated with me. I actually like to ask, “Why does this bring me joy?” which you can hear more about in Episode 033 because it digs a little bit deeper than the surface. On any given day anything can bring me joy. A chocolate chip cookie fits the bill. But if I’m able to figure out why on THIS particular day in THIS particular moment something brings me joy, I’m able to replicate it. There is more than one way to reach joy and just like Pokemon, I want to connect them all. I just moved and I’m in the middle of some fun decluttering, which reminded me of another question I like to ask myself. “Do I love it enough to want to wear it every single day?”"

A cute zombie but I don’t want my thoughts to be the equivalent of “Braaainz.” When you are a night owl living in a daylight world, it can be hard out here in these circadian rhythm streets. So enough is enough. Today has been a “hitting snooze every 5 minutes” kind of day on all the random naps I’ve been taking. Getting just enough sleep to help me have just enough juice until the next responsibility. This is no way to live. And the crazy thing is that this is all avoidable."

The first thought to pop into my head was, “You are superhuman!” because there was no way that I could have completed what she completed within the same amount of hours. I shared my thought immediately and she reminded me that I had packed my apartment, moved items from one place to another, and unpacked all in one day so I was superhuman too. And one of the things I’m MOST excited about is activating what Gretchen Rubin calls “The Clean Slate.” In her book all about habits, Better Than Before, she mentions that a new situation makes it much easier to change habits. If someone is not willing to stay in it, release them. Those that are meant to stay…will.” I had a recent conversation where the topic of friendship came up and I realized that I was still a bit conflicted over how well I’m maintaining relationships as I age. It seemed to be so much easier when I was younger but now in my late 30s it’s just different. So it requires adjusting your expectations."

Whether we are aware or not, we all start things off with intentions. Relationships. Businesses. Hobbies. Whatever. We create a fundamental base level of boundaries. This is what being successful in this looks like. These are the things I don’t want. And until we reevaluate those boundaries, we process every experience through that lens. If something is rubbing us the wrong way…it probably isn’t what you originally had in mind."

It might feel good in the moment but we have to be careful of just how much we’re dumping, especially if they aren’t professionals trained to handle it. Be honest. Is it a grocery store bag amount or is it the amount of bags used in the TV Show Hoarders? We can all handle a little bit of other people’s stuff. That’s what being in community is all about. On a good day our bags are never so full of our own stuff that we can’t take a little bit of someone else’s but if you know you’re having a Hoarder level day, it’s time to self-soothe."

"If you are looking for a check-in tool that will instantly let you know your current relationship to your self-care, it’s this. During your last day, did you pee when you needed to? We’ve all been there. We have to go….so bad. You’re mentally singing, “I gotta go, I gotta go, I gotta go right now,” but you don’t. Because you’re in a meeting. Or you’re in a conversation. Or you’re driving. Or you’re teaching. Or you’re taking care of a little one. Or you are at the dinner table. Peeing when you need to pee is your first defense of making sure that your needs are met. Every time that you don’t, you are unconsciously telling yourself that your needs don’t matter."

Images of yoga exercises and baths and things you can do RIGHT NOW for an immediate satisfaction of your needs and stress reduction. When you create something for yourself like a Self-Care Sunday, you are being very present-oriented. You are planning to have an entire day focused on the experiences that you are seeking. FOR THAT DAY. It’s very visceral. It’s very in the moment. Depending on how you’re feeling that day, that is what is going to dictate what your self-care looks like."

If you don’t feel that way, maybe a change of mind is in order. The idea that your very presence instantly improves the atmosphere of any room you’re in is not arrogant or vain or conceited. It’s an extension of the value that you perceive that you carry within you. I don’t enter any room with a giant tiara and beauty pageant sash that reads: Best Person. This isn’t the TV Show The Good Place. But it’s an inner knowing. It’s an inner responsibility that I have taken on to create memories every single day with the people that I interact with. I want space to check-in and I want to ease into the day. I hate feeling rushed which is ironic because lately, I’ve been waking up and immediately jumping into my responsibilities. Just like in Episode 13, I had unintentionally given myself an endpoint. An off switch. I had given myself permission to operate in a different mode without the normal constraints. Sure, there are still so many things to accomplish and do but there’s something special about having guilt-free off time. I like knowing that I don’t HAVE to do anything. "I’ve been thinking a lot lately about all of the various resources that we have available to us. Time. Money. Relationships. Knowledge. Health. No one is any more important than the other. We need them all to build our lives but we often get fixated on one. Whatever is the most out of balance in our lives at the time is where we focus our attention. If our schedules are full, we pay more attention to time. If money is tight, we put our efforts into getting more. If we don’t feel connected, we reach out to others. If there’s something we don’t know, we do our best to learn it. If we’re not feeling well, our goal is to get better.

Our emotions. Our capacity is going to vary and that has to be okay too."

"I had a friendship errand date and it was exactly what I needed. I think we all have a tendency to make spending time with people a thing. It’s the planning involved. It’s the coordinating the day and time. It’s deciding on the location. It’s determining just how long it’s going to last. I decided this week that I was over all that. I was going to reach out to people and ask them to think of me whenever they were going on any errands. It’s something that they will be doing anyway so it’s easier to just tag along. Sometimes you’re available. Sometimes you’re not but it’s opening up what it means to be in relationship with others."

"I'm still figuring out my germ comfort level with this new normal. What am I willing to risk? It could be a year before we're no longer wearing masks. So I find myself asking, how are we going to co-exist Covid? Let's Define The Relationship because I don't care what 99.9% of the world is doing. What am I comfortable with? The question isn’t whether or not it’s actually a safer practice or not. That’s actually irrelevant. The self-care practice you will actually do is better than the one you won’t."

"I'm in the mood for adventure and I'm planning it the night before. New week! New me! I've realized that the meaningful things don't tend to happen unless I'm intentional about them. I want to wake up tomorrow with a map basically. One that I can just follow that will lead me to things I treasure. I want the list to be easy to fit in among everything else. If you've never created an adventure list before let's go through the process together. It’s basically two steps."

"The reason that taking breaks can be so hard is because on some level we’ve attached our value to our execution. There really is no way of getting around that. People aren’t privy to our innermost thoughts unless we share them. They only have to go on what we do. What we say. And if there’s a disconnect in some way it can be hard to explain sometimes. You don’t always want to go into all the reasons why you aren’t able to do something today that you could easily do yesterday. So where does that leave us?"

"There’s a quote that I love by a Greek Philosopher and it’s this: "We don't rise to the level of our expectations; we fall to the level of our training." When it comes to our self-care, that’s exactly what happens. Whatever practices or mindsets we have developed at any given point is where we really are. Grand ideas don’t really mean much if you have a habit of never executing them. It’s not what we say. It’s really what we do. I guess I’m thinking about all of this because today is my birthday and I’m thinking about who I’m going to be becoming in this next year. I want to amplify who I really am and decrease the things I’ve been holding on to that aren’t really serving me any longer. "

"I’m calling it. Binging on a television show totally counts as self-care. I know. I know. I just talked about going on a Content Diet in episode 34 where I gave up all media consumption minus books and music but the three-day experiment has passed. In fact, I lasted for 4 days because I was enjoying the change of pace and Brian McKnight so much. But after a long mental day I wanted to escape. This is how I found the show “Normal People” on Hulu and as one hour turned to six, my relationship to time changed."

"This has become my new favorite question. “How was your last hour?” It came to mind today because I wanted to check-in with a friend. I knew her morning had been off to a rough start so I wanted to see what was important to her in the moment. By knowing how she felt about her last hour, it was a better gauge about her current state because emotions and circumstances have a tendency to change. Plus, it allowed her to stay in the present and not have to go back deeper unless she wanted to."

"I don’t want to make one more decision today. Today has been a rollercoaster of emotions which is why I’m glad that I captured it as it was happening. Sometimes our truths can be easily forgotten as we transition into other modes and experiences which is why reflection is so important to me. It has a way of taking the lesson from the frustration so I don’t have to keep revisiting it. I can just focus on what I’ve learned instead. I know I’m not the only person who has felt this or is currently feeling it so my single women, this one is for you. You’re about to hear my thoughts exactly as they were and then how I’m reflecting on it now that a few hours have passed. It’s not just you."

"You aren't just one or the other. Full stop. Depending on the circumstances one above the other can come into play. I think more than anything our role in helping ourselves is to continually make active choices. What’s not okay is having our default mode be just throwing in the towel. It's saying I'm CHOOSING to not grow in this area right now. I'm CHOOSING not to find the answer to the best of my ability. I'm CHOOSING to stay in the situation I'm in a little longer. There's power in knowing what you're currently able to handle and what you're not. It builds your self-trust.

"There are very few self-care practices that I do every single day. In fact, I think it's unrealistic to expect that all of your life conditions will stay the exact same on any given day so you can establish routines. I personally believe it's just not possible. Your mood. Your energy. Your brainpower. Your desires. Your priorities. They are constantly changing. Mine will change by the end of this sentence. So when you think about self-care you have to stop thinking about it as specific practices that you do every single day. Instead I focus on self-care buckets based on the most important needs that I've identified. It's one of the ways that you can make sure that self-care is still a daily practice without being rigid about it. As I always say, there are multiple ways to satisfy any need. Depending on your personal bandwidth that day, you can simply pull a self-care practice from one of your buckets!"

"I think we all need to get into the regular habit of going on a content diet. When I say content, it's anything that we consume. Television. Movies. Audiobooks. Kindle books. Paperback books. Podcasts. Blogs. Magazines. News. Music. YouTube. Instagram. Twitter. Facebook. LinkedIn. Not everything is good for us all of the time. It's like gorging at a buffet and trying to eat it all just because it's there. I like missing something. I like giving myself a new appreciation of something every now and again. I didn't realize how desperately I was in need of a content diet until I got into my car the other day and realized that I forgot my phone."

"When you’re not in the mood to feel like you’re in a spa but your body needs a release, yoga and stretches just aren’t going to cut it. So what can you do instead? Impromptu dance my friend. What I love about this is that it is all about just moving your body. If you’re moving at all, you’re doing it right. There’s no steep learning curve. You just put on some music and move. There’s something about looking at myself dancing that makes it feel transcendent. I am suddenly having this entire experience because I can connect with my body on multiple levels. I’m moving in all kinds of ways so muscles that don’t typically get used are finally having their chance to shine. But I’m also able to learn about myself. I’m able to see what I naturally do when I’m not following a routine. When it’s just me.

There are always two stages to everything in life. Stage One is what I like to call “Preparation.” Stage Two is what I like to call “The Good Stuff.” You will only ever be in one of those stages at one time so it’s very important to identify that mentally. It helps to provide a framework for how to feel about things because it’s just what it is. There is no deeper meaning attached to it. You can just be along for the process."

"We’ve adapted as a culture to be awake when the sun is out and to sleep when its dark but I’ve never been a fan of accepting things as they are. I’m someone who asks “Why?” and “Why not?” a lot. Most of the time we don’t question things. It’s just the way that it is but more than ever I am unapologetically embracing my natural internal clock. Say it loud. I’m a night owl and I’m proud. So today I would like us all to think about when we are at our best. If there were no alarm clocks. And no jobs or responsibilities. If you could just sleep when you wanted to and wake up when you wanted to…would your life be different? Have you ever stopped to question it?"

"My Aunt Carla called me today. The conversation lasted less than 5 minutes yet I’m still thinking about it. How she said, “I just wanted to hear your voice.” How she was the one to reach out first. How little time it took. How much more connected I feel to her. Relationships can often feel overwhelming for me. I discuss this more in Episode 12 but I’m always looking for ways to improve the ways that I show up for the people I love in my life. I was reminded today that it takes less than I think. The words of the conversation with my Aunt don’t matter. What I remember is that she cares about me. That she was thinking about me. That I was important enough for her to put forth the effort. So I made a little list of all the simple ways I can strengthen my relationships and I plan to start implementing them more."

"If you’re in a situation where you feel stuck. If it feels like you have too many decisions that you need to make and you don’t know how to tell if you’re going in the right direction, decide what’s actually true. How do you really feel? What do you really need in order for it to work? It’s having that brave moment and deciding, IF I REFUSE TO SETTLE, this is what I want. Because maybe that’s why we don’t begin. We focus more on all the reasons something is hard or won’t work instead of focusing on the truth of our needs."

"If you’re having a difficult time figuring out what self-care looks like for you, I want to share one reflection question that will open it up for you. I was reflecting today on my own entryway into self-care and realized that I’m not unique. Self-care is typically motivated by the need to course correct something in our lives. We get to a point where we realize that life as it is right now is not working so we ask ourselves: what can I do differently? Self-care starts at the beginning of your self-awareness. So your reflection question for today is: When I’m stressed, what mode do I go into for relief? That’s your underlying motivator for self-care because that’s your instinctual way of taking care of yourself. It probably explains a lot of your self-care practices."

"There’s a word that’s been coming up a lot for me recently and it’s bandwidth. Bandwidth is defined as the energy or mental capacity required to deal with a situation. I think it’s safe to say that for all of us our capacity has been pushed to the brink as of late. So what do we do with that? I think we begin with simply acknowledging that we only have so much bandwidth. That we can’t be running at 100% in all areas of our lives at all times. That it’s okay if we’re not making equal progress every single day because something has to give. There are many ways to label the different kinds of bandwidth we experience. Mental. Energy. Emotional. Physical. Social. Spiritual. It really depends on whatever is demanding the most of you that day. That’s why it’s so important to check-in with yourself daily. Most times when you wake up you know EXACTLY the kind of day that it’s going to be. So lean into that instead of fighting against it. On any given day, one kind of bandwidth is going to take the lead because your body knows what it’s up for."

"There’s a reason that I don’t have social media. I think it’s an incredible tool for innovation and connection but at the same time, it’s way too triggering for me. It’s easy for me to hop on the comparison train and I’d rather just stay off. I’m not one of those people who believes that you should just suck it up either. If being exposed to something is going to affect your mood in a negative way, then avoid it. And it doesn’t matter what it is or the reason why it’s upsetting you. If it’s stealing your joy, it’s not helpful. And that’s how we need to frame it. Is this helpful to me right now or not? Because depending on the season you’re in, it may not be."

Nothing out of the ordinary UNTIL I decided it was time for an adventure after I got my food! Sure. I COULD go straight home but I decided to give myself a quest instead. Did you know that you don’t have to wait for a quest to be bestowed upon you? You can decide at any moment what is suddenly more important than ANYTHING else. And that you won’t rest until that thing is done. It can be noble, sure, but most of my quests are completely random which is why they are the BEST."

I’m not always in the mood to walk for 30 minutes or even 10 minutes. And it gets harder the more time passes between walks. I have to pump myself up. You’re going to be SO glad you went outside Dionne. Yeah, I know but it’s raining so. But Dionne, you can just walk inside your apartment. It’s more about moving your body. Yeah, I know but I just don’t want to so. And that pretty much settles it. I don’t like doing things I don’t want to do. I don’t think anyone is immune from that feeling but the cure is in how we answer that “I don’t want to” thought."

In my friend's camp, you thrive best when you’re around other people. Most of your activities before Covid-19 involved others. You enjoy the presence of a crowd. You went to coffeeshops. You went to meetups. You went to the gym. You went to sporting events. You spent way more time outside of your house than inside it. You processed your time in relationship to your experiences with others. This episode is for you, especially if you’re single. Because this has been really hard for you. I’m sorry. "So I recently did a brain dump and while it helped, it didn’t spur me into action. I found myself still needing to make sense of all of this raw data. All of these tasks and ideas and worries so I reached out to my friend Safiya whose an author and writing coach. Her very first question to me was, “What results are you looking for?” And I had to stop and pause. I had literally written out over 50 things swirling around in my brain so no wonder I felt all over the place. I asked myself, “Out of everything, what is most important right now?” From that, I was able to come up with my champagne moment. The one result that if I achieve it, it’s cause for celebration and popping open a bottle of champagne!"

"A brain dump is when you take all the things swirling in your mind and put them down on paper. You can do it with a pen and actual paper or type it out but it’s all about making your ideas visible so that you can sort them. It can start off with just rambling. "Ahh. I have so much in my head. I don't know where to begin" but you just keep writing. Every idea. Every worry. Every task. It doesn't have to be organized though it can be. It doesn't have to make sense to anyone else. "Several years ago I heard that when you've been emotionally triggered it takes 72 hours for your body to process it. Just like how it takes your body 72 hours to recover after strenuous exercise. Is this scientific? I have no idea but based on my personal experience, it 1000% tracks. On Monday I was triggered. Today is Thursday and I'm feeling better. My thoughts aren't lingering on it any longer. I am more well rested because I ended up sleeping more than usual. It was like my fight or flight was activated and my body had to work off all that adrenaline. More than anything, 72 hours allows you to have distance. It gives you several days where it's okay that you're sad. Or upset. Or not immediately over it. There's time for there to be some kind of resolution without feeling forced. I was eventually able to reframe the situation and think about it differently but I needed time. 2 hours after you're triggered isn't enough."

"So today I’m asking myself, how can I activate hope whenever I want? How can I get excited about my life on demand? Because here’s the thing. It’s the kind of thing you can’t fake. You can’t make yourself believe whatever you want. If I held out dog poop in my hand and told you it was chocolate, you wouldn’t believe me. Our brains. Our bodies. They take in the evidence of our lives and create truths. So today I’m doing a little experiment. I’ve decided the truth that I want to reinforce and now I just need to find every piece of evidence to support it. Even if I have just ONE piece of evidence, no matter how small, it’s enough to bring it to remembrance and generate some hope and possibility on demand. Why? If it happened once, it can happen again."

"All I want to do is relax! If you’re like me, your options for relaxation have gotten pretty limited as of late. We’ve been having to WORK for our relaxation since we’re having to do it ourselves. We’re having to get creative. Today I’ve been thinking a lot about what can be relaxing alternatives to TV. When I feel the urge to numb out, what can I do instead? It’s been very challenging to come up with my list! But I came up with one and all of the activities had to pass my relaxation guidelines. This is another way to practice self-care. Figuring out what you like to do that requires no one else. It’s enjoying your own company and being able to tap into it whenever you need to. Because I didn’t move the needle in a thousand other areas. I didn’t make a dent in my never-ending to-do list and of course, to-do lists rule the world and I must obey or fear annihilation. As I’m reflecting on all of this I can’t help but think about how ridiculous this all sounds! I’ve had a lovely day. Filled with lovely moments. And it still feels unfinished. Unsettled. And I know why. I didn’t set an end point for the day. I didn’t give my body an off switch so it’s been on all day with no end in sight. I decided that for today my end point was going to be recording this podcast. It’s still early in the evening but when it’s completed, I’m officially off the clock. I don’t have to be productive. I don’t have to do housework. I don’t HAVE to do anything. I can CHOOSE to do whatever I want. I can just sit and stare at the wall if I want to but the day is officially over and marked as a success in my book. You did it Dionne! If you do nothing else, you still get all the stars."

"I say it all the time but each of us has a finite bandwidth. There is only so much time and energy that we can divvy up in a day. If we’re starting at 100 when we wake up, our level is decreasing minute by minute. We put our energy into the things that are most important to us and I’ve come to realize that I only have the energy for two high touch relationships on a daily basis. Just two. That means daily checking in and communicating for a collective time of two hours or more. And those relationships are highly collaborative. It’s not passive interaction or merely conversation. We are sharing ideas, co-creating and having an experience together. So if I’ve spent that kind of time with two people in one day already, I don’t really have much left in the tank."

"I knew I needed to muster some motivation somehow and just like that a thought popped into my head. “I don’t wanna be like…” A name instantly came to mind and without another thought I did what I had to do. In less than 5 minutes everything was put away. It struck me though. How motivating it was to draw a line in the sand. At the root of it, I was taking a stand on my identity. I’m the kind of person who [fill in the blank]."

"I reached out to someone today for help and out of nowhere I was overwhelmed with gratitude. I thought about all the tiny decisions taken in the last ten years that got me to this exact point and I was so proud of my past self. Seriously. I was like, Dionne, you did so good! I’m so proud of the way you took risks and trusted your instincts and went after your goals - even if it was imperfect. Even if it all didn’t work out like you thought. You prepared the way so that I’m benefiting from it right now and you didn’t even know it."

"Today was a good day but I’m being stretched doing something that I really didn’t feel up to doing right now. And now that I’m here, I’m glad that I’m doing it. I’m glad that I am retraining my brain so that it knows that this is a way I’m showing up for myself no matter what. It’s what I’ve actively chosen. I want to have that inner push to continue even when it doesn’t feel polished. Or perfect. Or like I have the energy. I want to know that I can. I want showing up to matter more than the result right now. "

"Don’t feel rushed to make a decision. Sit with it. Think it through because you’re going to have to live with whatever you decide. Make sure it’s something you’ll actually enjoy for the long haul. Not just right now. Good enough isn’t what we’re aiming for. We keep our standards high around here. Why? How you do one thing is how you do everything. I want to be mindful and thoughtful about what I’m adding to my life these days. When it arrives, I want it to know that it’s been lovingly chosen out of everything else. It wasn’t chosen just because it happened to be there."

"Today I helped my neighbor Charlene declutter her apartment a bit. She’s a minimalist like me but like all of us, things have a way of accumulating over time. For me, it’s those things that I’ll take care of later. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I’ll do it tomorrow. And tomorrow becomes tomorrow and before you know it, it’s a year later and you’re like, how did this happen?"

“I remember it vividly. I woke up and just made the decision. If this is how it’s going to be for the unforeseeable future some things were going to have to change around here. I’m NOT okay with this just being how life is. For many of us, it feels like our lives are in a holding pattern. We’re just waiting for Covid to be over so we can go back to the way things were but here’s the truth. It will NEVER be like it was before."

"If you’ve ever waited for your electronic toothbrush to beep after two minutes and it felt too long? We’re obviously twins and I love you already. But it’s very telling. This tendency I have to want to rush some things and slowly enjoy others. How can I close the gap? If I’m spending my time doing something - any time at all - I want to enjoy it. That’s how I came to realize that taking a shower is one of those forced break moments that I’ve learned to identify and look forward to."

"Make the first move. Get what you need. I used to reach out to my family and friends when I was a flight attendant and feeling homesick and let them know exactly what I needed. I need you to say that you miss me. I need you to remind me of why I’m amazing. I need a virtual hug. I need you to check on me in a few hours and see if I’m okay. I knew what I needed. They didn’t so I made sure that they could love on me in the ways that I needed. They were always happy to do it."

"Today I’m claiming back my freedom. I’m DECIDING that the day is not over yet and there’s still time to show up for myself. I’m asking myself, what do I REALLY want to do? Nothing that feels like an obligation. Only something that will help me to get back to myself. I want something nourishing and yummy to my soul. I want it to feel light and fun. If the prefix is “I should” it immediately goes off the list."

"A few months ago I adopted something that I like to call “My 10%.” We all have 24 hours in a day and 10% of that time is roughly 2 1/2 hours. Even if you subtract 8 hours for sleeping and 8 hours for work, you still have 8 unaccounted hours for in the day. I decided that if I couldn’t set aside 2 1/2 hours every day for myself then I was doing life wrong. At least the kind of life that I wanted to be living. I wanted to practice holding space for myself like I never had before."

"My definition of self-care is checking in with yourself on a regular basis and assessing what you need so that you can be in good working order. That means having the physical, emotional, and mental parts of yourself operating at the level you need."
