The empire strikes back: An attack on a prominent classical Christian school shows the movement has the liberal establishment running scared
A major hit piece in the liberal media might be what most schools fear, but for one prominent private school in Kentucky, the hit reveals the extent to which the establishment fears the rising power of classical Christian schools. In other words, we now have their attention.
I see the rise of the classical Christian education movement as one of the most encouraging developments of our times. Seen correctly, those three words belong together. They cohere in a distinctive model of education that is, in truth, a recovery of one that would have been considered the gold standard among educators in previous generations. It is driven by an educational philosophy deeply rooted in classical Greece and Rome, channeled through the Middle Ages, and was updated and explicitly adopted by leading educators on both sides of the Atlantic generations ago. I am a vocal proponent of classical Christian education, and I am proud that my grandchildren are in a classical and Christian school.
This movement has caught the attention of the secular educational establishment and its media allies, precisely because it represents a rejection of the establishment’s secularism, liberal theories of education, progressivist ideologies, and educational failures. And it’s growing. It’s growing fast.
The light is dawning on Christian parents that the public schools represent both educational failure (driven by progressivist ideology) and leftist moral indoctrination. Many parents are learning this only after hearing their children spout the latest affirmation required by the LGBTQ movement. In California, the public schools do not even have to inform parents that their offspring identify as transgender at school—even adopting a new name and pronouns. What happens in California spreads fast, driven by teachers unions (just look at their activism on these issues) and the dominant educational establishment.
But what makes the classical Christian educational model so powerful is its comprehensive continuity with the educational models that produced literate and thinking citizens while also sharpening and strengthening Western civilization. And that, dear reader, is what is driving defenders of the secular status quo absolutely crazy.
The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., recently ran a series of reports on Highlands Latin School, which has become one of the most prominent schools in the classical Christian movement. HLS defines itself as classical, Christian, and traditional. These days, all three are contested words that can cause cardiac arrest among self-styled progressives. In the massive series of articles billed as “The Cost of Empire,” the newspaper claims that its two reporters have “pieced together the formula for Highlands Latin School’s staggering growth and the way it approaches teaching.”
The reporters, Josh Wood and Krista Johnson, describe the rise of HLS as “a classical Christian education empire.” They traced the origins of the school and chronicled its development. In one telling passage, the reporters stated, “Classical education emphasizes ancient historical texts and ancient languages, such as Latin. At Highlands, it is merged with Christian ideology.” Christianity is now reduced to an “ideology,” and learning what generations of American children learned at school is presented as strange. That sentence tells you the extent to which modern public education is detached even from its own history.
The rise of classical schools is presented in this series as a clear and present danger to society, even as these schools represent a recovery of lost learning and produce stellar graduates. Predictably, the reporters found some disgruntled graduates and former students for comment. But the series of articles, taken at face value, reveal the fact that the secular establishment is not really concerned about the classical Christian school movement’s failures but its successes. The reporters reveal themselves when they cite public school advocates who decry even classical charter schools as “right-wing.”
At this point, we need to see what the progressives really hate about the movement. It is the words “classical” and “Christian” that set them off. But this series also hits directly at what it sees as another danger represented by the classical Christian school movement—its defense of Western civilization. The tagline of Memoria Press, a curriculum publisher that is part of the HLS family, is “Saving Western civilization one student at a time.” The reporters say the motto “is seen as a dog whistle by some former students and experts.”
That tells you far more about the state and stance of the current secular education establishment than about Highlands Latin School—that the secular establishment now sees Western civilization as a threat and any affirmation of that tradition as thinly disguised racism and a “Trojan horse” for “white nationalism.” Here is the lesson: Anyone who defends the lasting truths and values of Western civilization is now a “white nationalist”? Do those who make such claims know that much of the classical tradition was based in North Africa?
Here is a great lesson for us all: If you take on the educational establishment, you will be hated. If you seek to teach children so that they will learn to appreciate Western civilization, you will be called a white nationalist, even if you are not white. If you produce stellar graduates who go on to illustrious universities, you will be denounced as too strict and too demanding.
Parents are not fools, and increasing numbers of them are looking to schools like HLS and the larger classical Christian education movement (including intrepid homeschoolers and consortium models) for their children. Without apology, they are choosing an education for their children that is defined as both classical and Christian—and many like what they see.
Therein lies the threat to the establishment. But add to all this the fact that Kentucky voters will face the question of ending the state’s public school monopoly in November with what is known as Amendment 2. That, let’s be clear, is what has them so scared, and all this reminds you why voting “yes” on that amendment is so important.
My guess is that this series of hit pieces in the Courier-Journal will backfire and turn out to draw even more families toward the school and others like it. No school is perfect, but if one can drive the liberal establishment crazy and lead it to respond with this much fury, it’s doing something big, something important, and something worth your attention. Count on it.

The nation is still working through the massive political events of the last 48 hours or so, but it has become increasingly clear that the Democratic Party is coalescing around Vice President Kamala Harris as its 2024 presidential nominee. The entire effort looks remarkably orchestrated, and there are clear signs that the Harris campaign was ready to move as soon as President Joe Biden finally withdrew from the race. It all took place as an American version of a palace coup. Democratic leaders and their funders decided that the gig was up with Biden. The conspiracy to deny his loss of mental acuity was failing. It was time to pull the emergency switch and, as quick as two tweets, the Biden campaign was over and the Harris campaign was underway.
There will surely be some unexpected developments along the way, but the closing of the Democratic ranks around Harris has to be one of the most interesting political moves of our times. The Democrats have coalesced around a candidate who has giant liabilities and who, you may remember, started her campaign for the 2020 nomination only to exit the race without earning a single delegate. But, with the Democrats facing reality, they must have realized that there was no way around anointing Harris, given the fact that they have continuously bragged that she is the first African American and Asian American woman to serve as vice president. Once Biden endorsed her, the ball started rolling quickly. It would take something huge to deny her the 2024 nomination of the Democratic Party.
But there are massive questions that remain. Are the other major Democrats, mostly governors, who see themselves as future presidents, willing to see Harris lose the 2024 election and thus leave an open field for 2028? Time may tell.
In the meantime, Americans have to face the reality that Vice President Harris is the likely nominee. The Democrats will be led by a candidate considerably to the left of President Biden and one who will be the most pro-abortion presidential nominee in American history.
Shortly after the Dobbs decision reversing Roe was handed down by the Supreme Court, Biden appointed Harris to run point on the abortion issue for his administration. As the attorney general of California and as a U.S. senator, Harris was a stalwart defender of abortion. In the Senate, she pushed an abortion bill that was modeled after the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and would allow federal courts to review any state restrictions on abortion, a process known as preclearance. Harris went straight after the ability of the states to protect unborn life.
In July 2019, she went after Biden in a Democratic debate, accusing him of harming poor women through his historic support for the Hyde Amendment, which prevents most taxpayer monies from paying for abortions, asking, “Do you now say that you have evolved and regret that?” Faced with an ultimatum and determined to gain the nomination, Biden obediently evolved and repented of ever supporting the Hyde Amendment. Usually, that kind of confrontation (not to mention her own disastrous campaign) would have doomed Harris’ chance to be Biden’s running mate—but Biden asked her anyway.
As a senator, Harris had gone after Brett Kavanaugh on abortion rights in his confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court, all orchestrated for the television cameras. As Biden’s vice president, she affirmed the administration line that their goal, after Dobbs, was to codify Roe v. Wade by federal legislation. But that was never honest. There is no way that the Biden administration, now driven by abortion rights defenders, would ever stop at Roe. The current push is for legislating abortion rights without any restrictions at all. Any argument to the contrary is dishonest.
When it comes to Harris, the proof is the fact that when Margaret Brennan of CBS News’ Face the Nation asked her to offer any abortion restriction she would support, Harris had no answer. None. She didn’t even answer the question.
In March, the vice president made a major statement by touring a Planned Parenthood facility that performs abortions in Minnesota. That state, we should note, offers no real restrictions on abortion through all three trimesters. At the Planned Parenthood site, Harris said, “Right now, in our country, we are facing a very serious health crisis.” In her Orwellian doublespeak, she dared to speak of a death clinic for the unborn as an answer to “a very serious health crisis.” As the media celebrated, this was the first-ever visit of a president or a vice president to an abortion center. Harris is the most eager advocate of the killing of the unborn to run on a national ticket. Now, she intends to top the Democratic ticket.
The media are falling all over themselves to anoint Kamala Harris the next president of the United States. There are countless reasons to see a Harris presidency as a real threat. But the greatest threat of Kamala Harris and her candidacy may be a threat to future Americans in the womb. That needs to be understood quickly and urgently.

The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump represents one of those rare historical moments when fundamental truths are clarified. Yesterday’s attack at President Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania shocked the nation and the watching world, and it instantly revealed so many essential truths.
First, life and death can come down to a matter of a millimeter. The video of President Trump grabbing his ear and then diving onto the platform will be indelibly etched into the nation’s historical memory. Just the slightest deviation in the path of that ammunition round would have changed a bleeding ear into a dead former president, even as Trump is just days from his official nomination as the Republican candidate in the coming election. How can human life be so fragile as that? But the fragility of life is essential to our understanding of the gift of life. In a world of sin and evil, assassins and pathogens, every breath we take is a gift. At some point, a single breath will be our last.
For Donald Trump, his last breath could have come yesterday, broadcast to the entire world. Thankfully, that was not the case. But why? Those who hold to a purely materialistic and naturalistic worldview have no answer but luck, which is a major doctrine of secular theology. But Donald Trump (and the watching world as well) must surely know in his heart that something far greater than luck preserved his life. Speaking to the press, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., acknowledged the hairline distance that separated life and death in the assassination attempt: “Fate stepped in.” Interestingly, it was President Trump himself who clarified the issue, posting on Truth Social that it was “God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.” Indeed, it was God and God alone, for God alone is the sovereign ruler of the cosmos.
Second, the reality of moral evil and the necessity of moral responsibility were instantly clarified yesterday. America has known so many tragedies, including the horrifying assassinations of presidents and presidential candidates. But in every case, the correct moral impulse is to find the assassin, stop the threat, and hold to account anyone involved in such a horrific crime. No one speaks then of moral relativism or makes ridiculous claims that morality is nothing more than social convention or cultural construction. This was an attempt to assassinate a former president of the United States and a current (leading) candidate for the White House who is headed to accept the nomination of his party within days. This was an attempt to abandon politics and embrace violence. This was a premeditated attempt to undermine an entire civilization and kill a human being. Though President Trump survived the attempt, at least one American is dead, a beloved husband and father named Corey Comperatore, and at least two others are critically wounded. This was an evil act, and no sane person is arguing otherwise. That should tell us something really important.
Third, as a dimension of human activity, politics brings out the best and the worst in us, and more often it’s the worst. This is especially true when the stakes are as high as we see in the 2024 election. Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, along with their two parties, do not merely represent two different plans for America. In reality, the two parties, and the two presidents, now represent two different visions of America. President Biden rightly called President Trump to speak thankfully of his preservation and to acknowledge the evil of violence. Every single politician on the Sunday news programs spoke to the same conviction—that violence is a threat to our entire constitutional order and that violent acts like what happened on Saturday are never acceptable. No doubt they mean it when they say it.
But, even in the calmest of times, military metaphors abound in political campaigns. The path to victory requires rendering your opponent as a threat to the very existence of the nation. Language matters, and while both sides are quite capable (and often guilty) of using overheated and violent language, the political left in the United States has demonized Donald Trump and has fueled the atmosphere of violent language and imagery. Biden’s language of putting a “bullseye” on Trump is perhaps the clearest example. That language has not aged well, to say the least.
Finally, there are so many questions that demand answers. Once again, the urgent demand for those answers is a testimony to the fact that God made us moral creatures who are driven by an insatiable appetite to understand the world in moral terms. We are also driven by the urgency of holding people accountable for their actions. No doubt, yesterday’s horrors will launch innumerable investigations. But some of the questions cannot ever be answered, for the suspected shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, is dead. Why would a 20-year-old young man from rural Pennsylvania do such a thing? We are right to demand answers, but we will surely be frustrated by the lack of adequate answers.
Clearly, our political system is not well. The stakes in the coming election are genuinely high. Both sides know it, and yesterday’s events will not bring about a kinder and gentler political culture. The 2024 election looms large as we consider the future of our nation. Those who see no higher plane than politics are increasingly desperate. Christians cannot share that kind of desperation.
Why? Because the Christian faith underlines the two realities of divine sovereignty and human responsibility. Both are absolutely necessary to Biblical Christianity, and both are absolutely necessary to the Christian worldview in every respect. But though both are necessary, they are not equal. Human responsibility is real, but it exists only within the transcendent reality of God, and within the context of his unconditional providence. The reality of God’s providence is something many Americans, and no doubt many Christians, think about with far too little seriousness. But I dare to ask, how do you look at yesterday’s events in Butler, Pa., and see it all merely as a lucky miss? If that’s all there is to it, our luck will one day run out. Thank God that day was not yesterday.

Britain’s national election was held, ironically enough, on July 4. Just a few weeks ago, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had adopted the risky strategy of calling for a quick national election months ahead of schedule. Sunak was desperate for a political play that might change, avoid, or at least mitigate the catastrophe his Conservative Party faced when an election was held. His strategy was a total failure. Britain’s Conservative Party, one of the most successful and powerful political parties in history, now faces legitimate questions about its political survival.
How could this have happened? Sunak is now a former prime minister and the new prime minister is Keir Starmer, the decidedly bland leader of Britain’s Labour Party. The conservatives had held power for 14 years and had long been considered the nation’s “party of government.” The Conservatives, sometimes referred to as “Tories,” are the party of Benjamin Disraeli, Winston Churchill, and Margaret Thatcher. They have been the unquestioned political establishment for the nation and its parliamentary system. That establishment is now broken. The party has been broken. In reality, it broke itself.
When the election results came in, Labour had won 411 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons—a landslide of epic proportions. The Conservatives lost 244 seats won in the previous election and held onto only 121. It was a wipeout from which the party may not survive. Britain’s party of government has lost its reputation for competence, and voters were ready to see them go. Starmer’s Labour Party ran on a very fuzzy set of policies and proposals, but this was not an election about big ideas. It was an election over basic competence and voter frustration. The Conservatives’ 14-year hold on power was through five prime ministers. The party had exchanged the political and moral clarity of the Thatcher years for a mess of incoherent policies and ruinous scandals.
Historians may well argue that it was the 2016 Brexit vote that broke the party. Prime Minister David Cameron, faced with a challenge to his Tory establishment (Eton and Oxford) pro-European worldview, stunned the political class by putting Brexit to a vote. He was sure it would lose. It won. Britain voted to exit the European Union. Cameron was destroyed in terms of political credibility and accordingly resigned. He was followed by no less than four Conservative Party prime ministers. First came Theresa May, who then gave way to the populist (and near cartoonish) Boris Johnson. He would eventually go down in a crisis over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that he had thrown a party in violation of the policies he enforced on the British people. Johnson was followed by a true conservative, Liz Truss, who went on to make history as the prime minister with the shortest term in British history: 49 days. Truss was followed by Sunak, a technocratic politician of enormous personal wealth (and his wife is even wealthier), whose tumultuous term in office saw a general breakdown of the British welfare state (certainly in terms of wait times and competence), rising inflation, and massive citizen unrest. Not a good look for a wealthy prime minister with a country estate in the U.K. and an expensive house in California. Oddly enough, it also turned out that Sunak held a coveted green card from the United States. Again, not a good look for a British head of government.
Sunak announced his party’s bid for another term in office with his call for a quick and unexpected national election. His announcement was in itself a massive political disaster. The prime minister was determined to open his campaign with a major speech outside of No. 10 Downing St., the iconic residence of British prime ministers. He continued giving his address in what became a heavy rain. By the time he finished (which no one remembers for its content), he was standing in a soaking suit looking like a man experiencing a tidal wave. That’s exactly what Sunak and his party were facing.There will be many in the United States who will point to the Conservative Party’s defeat in Britain as a failure of conservatism. In this case, that is nonsense. The Conservative Party had abandoned conservative principles and, in one of the weird ironies of the situation, the formerly socialist Labour Party seemed more conservative in personality if nothing else.
This disastrous run of supposedly conservative prime ministers began with Cameron, who in 2012 infamously came out in favor of same-sex marriage with these astounding words: “I don’t support gay marriage despite being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I am a Conservative.” In other words, he has no earthly idea what conservative means.
Britain faces interesting days ahead. The new Labour government made a lot of promises it can’t possibly keep, and all the economic challenges that faced the Sunak government, and more, will face Starmer. Meanwhile, the Conservative Party is going to have to figure out if it intends to be conservative, or even a party at this point. The Republican Party in the United States would do well to look at the catastrophe of the Conservative Party in Britain and learn the lesson fast. If any conservative party forgets conservative principles, it will deserve to be out of power with its leaders soaking wet.

Last night, Americans sat down to watch the first 2024 debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump knowing that presidential debates can change history. The 1960 debate between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy changed history when Kennedy and Nixon effectively tied on the issues but Kennedy appeared youthful and Nixon sweated profusely under the television lights. In 1976, President Gerald Ford debated Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter and declared there was “no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe.” He never recovered from the fallout. The debate in Atlanta last night will go down in history for one reason alone: President Biden turned the debate into a disaster, a debacle, and effectively a meltdown.
Former presidential speechwriter Peggy Noonan declared the event “the most important presidential debate ever.” Mincing no words, she wrote, “It was in fact as consequential as any presidential debate in history, and the worst night for an incumbent in history.” If anything, that was an understatement.
Headlines ranged from “Biden Stumbles” and “A Fumbling Performance, and a Panicking Party” at The New York Times to “Democrats Panic” at The Washington Post and “Biden Crashes” at The Wall Street Journal. On the major news networks, the mild-mannered John King of CNN came out with an honest assessment that President Biden had basically tanked his campaign for reelection. A panel of commentators agreed. On MSNBC, the hosts did their best to carry the official Democratic Party line, but their faces told the story. On Fox News, the president’s debate performance was described as a “train wreck.” It certainly was.
At the human level, the sight was just profoundly sad. Joe Biden demanded this moment, but it was a face-plant from which it is difficult to imagine recovery. The Democratic Party let this happen, and now it may reap the whirlwind.
Presidential debates are now part of the media age, and in a digital world, a mistake can quickly become an international meme. Biden’s performance last night provided an endless supply of facial expressions, garbled speech, broken sentences, and slurred words. In a strange twist, the optics were even worse than the audio feed. It was a human tragedy, and one that will live on as a political parable. The politicians and political managers who had assured us of Biden’s basic competence were exposed as liars. He is clearly an elderly man who has no place in the Oval Office.
The Democratic Party is clearly scrambling in the aftermath of the event. Party insiders had been acknowledging for weeks that they needed an early test of Biden’s ability and readiness for the campaign. They got it. But what will the Democrats do now? The party’s rules make it impractical if not impossible to deny Biden the nomination at this point. If he is somehow convinced to leave the race, the party will have to debate and fight over how he can be replaced. If Vice President Kamala Harris is chosen as the nominee, the Democrats expect to lose. But if she is passed over, the party would be insulting and sidelining a vice president who could legitimately claim a right to the nomination and run as the first black woman to be a major party nominee. Denying her that role would expose the Democrats as liars and posers when it comes to inclusion and representation. They run incessantly on identity politics and clearly run the risk of being seen as major league hypocrites.
In the debate, Donald Trump for the most part ran true to form. He was more restrained that in some previous debates and scored major points against Biden on inflation, uncontrolled illegal immigration, and America’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. Biden went directly against Trump on character questions, and Trump threw the character question back at Biden. The CNN moderators were in control of the event and the new rules removed some of the problems in previous debates. The entire debate, however, revealed the coarsening of American political life, right down to the language, especially from Biden.
Both candidates failed on the issue of abortion, but they did not fail equally. Biden was partly incoherent and partly dishonest. When Trump accused him of supporting late-term abortions, Biden denied the charge and blustered about legislating Roe v. Wade. The dishonest part is when Biden got away without saying that he would not sign a bill supported by congressional Democrats that would indeed allow for late-term abortions (perhaps right up to birth). He would surely sign such a bill, and he knows full well that all the talk about legislating Roe, as horrible as that would be, is patently dishonest.
For his part, Trump wavered on abortion, insisting again that the issue should be left to the states and asserting that Republicans simply have to get elected. He cited President Ronald Reagan in affirming “exceptions” that would allow for abortion in cases of rape, incest, and to save the life of the mother. It was a disappointing performance, but Trump did take credit for the reversal of Roe v. Wade and would reject the legislation Biden would sign. There is still a lot of distance between Trump and Biden on the abortion issue, but pro-lifers clearly have a huge challenge ahead of us.
The debate last night made history, and the days immediately ahead are going to be dominated by headlines and arguments, overwhelmingly about the future of Joe Biden and the Democratic Party. The Biden crash is going to be followed by seismic reverberations. But remember that the Supreme Court is likely to hand down decisions of massive importance today. Any way you look at it, this is going to be a week to remember.

It is an honor to be here at NatCon 2024, and we all know that we are meeting at an urgent moment and we can also see that the urgency has been made clear by some events just even over the last couple of years that have been very sobering. When last I had the opportunity to address this movement in late 2022, I spoke on the impossibility of a secular state. What I want to speak about today is the impotence of a secular conservatism. I don’t mean thereby to divide the room, but rather to speak honestly about where I think we are and what I think we should be thinking. I do speak as a Christian. I do speak as a theologian. I speak with a great deal of common concern and common cause among all of us here.
I appreciate the invitation to address this conference, but I also want to acknowledge a bomb on our moral landscape that reshapes our consideration, and that is the 2022 Dobbs decision and its aftermath. These developments force a new awareness on us.
I have been a part of the pro-life movement my entire adult life. I’ve had the privilege of being in rooms where major decisions have been made, strategies have been laid, and where facts and analytics have been considered. I can tell you that there are those now, and were those in the past, who were quite convinced that this is an argument we were winning. Many had convinced themselves that we were winning the argument for life, even if we were not winning that argument everywhere evenly. But the pro-life movement shared the confidence that if indeed all those years of work in conservative argument, and conservative organizing, and what became a conservative legal recovery, a constitutional recovery – if all that led to a reversal of Roe v. Wade, we would be ready for it and we would discover a pent-up, pro-life conviction on the part of the American people, certainly in key states painted red, where we would see pro-life conviction translated into pro-life legislation.
And of course, what we’ve seen is exactly the opposite. First in Kansas, but then also in my own Kentucky, suddenly the bomb went off, announcing to us that whatever commitment there was to the pro-life cause—commitment to the sanctity of human life, to the life of the unborn— was much less substantial than we had thought. It was much less convictional than we had thought. It was, most fundamentally, far less ontological than we had thought. And that leads me to the consideration for today. To be conservative is to hold allegiance to certain fixed truths and principles.
Now, I’m old enough to remember in my own adult lifetime the argument that conservative basically means holding to a conservative temperament and a conservative commitment to timeless tradition. But the truth I want to underline today is that the tradition without a fundamental commitment to truth – and that truth being fundamentally transcendent and theological – will soon evaporate.
I would take that argument further and insist that conservatism requires fixed religious truths as well as traditions. I would underline the fact that these fixed religious truths are grounded in specific acts of divine revelation, on which we are entirely dependent.
There are two points of urgency I want to make. Number one, conservatism is not just another form of liberalism, and then secondly, conservatism is not just liberalism or progressivism arriving later on the schedule with greater respect for the costs and challenges of what is defined as inevitable social and moral progress. Neither of these positions is genuinely conservative.
I believe the great challenge that now confronts conservatives, and I mean to include conservative Christians here, as well of course, all conservatives writ large in the United States, is the challenge of first things and fundamental truths. I do speak with a particular appeal to religious conservatives and American evangelicals. The great challenge is understanding that any worldview that does not ground itself in divine revelation, in the moral character of the self-existent, omnipotent, omniscient God – any conservative tradition that is not grounded in a prior commitment to ontology is going to evaporate. The only question is, will that evaporation happen quickly or more slowly?
One of the things we’ve witnessed in recent weeks, as a matter of fact, just in recent days, is the collapse of the Conservative Party in Great Britain. I follow that party and that Anglo-American tradition very closely, and the argument I made in an article published immediately after the election is that we should not be surprised that the so-called Conservatives lost, because the Conservative party had abandoned conservatism long ago. I would point to an incident that had taken place now more than a decade ago, when David Cameron, then the British Prime Minister and head of the Conservative Party, just basically came out and demanded that the party abandon what had been a very longstanding commitment to social conservatism. Indeed, he called for the party, and thus the government, to abandon the definition of marriage as the union of a man and a woman. In his memorable words: “I don’t do this despite the fact I’m a conservative. I do this because I am a conservative.”
At that point, it was just like the entire ontological structure of Creation Order was just denied by a party that still dared to call itself conservative. I don’t believe a party that does such a thing deserves a conservative reputation, much less conservative affirmation. This act, taken so brazenly, was a repudiation of Creation Order and the order that had made his civilization possible.
I’m not denying the importance of social traditions, morals, political principles, constitutional norms, and much more shared among conservatives and shared as a glad stewardship. I want to emphasize anew how important that stewardship is, but I do want to argue that if it all is a matter of constant negotiation and a process of accommodation to changing circumstances, we are losing and are destined to lose. There is no lasting conservatism that is not self-consciously grounded in revealed truth and in ontology. To be conservative is to affirm what is real. If we lose this conviction, we lose everything.
Now, when you consider the challenges we face at this moment, it’s impossible to say the challenge is not ontological. We’re living in a society that increasingly believes a boy can be a girl and a girl can be a boy. Just in terms of fundamental ontology, if we don’t understand anything else, we would just understand that it has been assumed rightly throughout virtually all human history that anatomy and ontology are definitive, and determinative, and, frankly, are not impositions but gifts.
But we now live in a time in which the progressive idea of personal autonomy has reached the point that many in our society (including a disproportionate number among the cultural elites) believe human beings to be autonomous from ontology. I think this cultural crisis underlines the fact that when you have a conservative movement that is not itself committed to ontology, everything collapses into a matter of endless negotiation. The ontological grounding of the American order was made very clear in the Declaration of Independence and in other founding documents. When the founders spoke of nature and nature’s God, when they claimed we are ‘endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights,’ that’s a language that is not just decorative, it is not just illustrative, but makes a truth claim. The language hearkens back to what in the Lutheran tradition is explicitly referred to as Creation Order, and I’m glad to say behind that the affirmation of what might rightly be called a Natural Law. The point is it is a created order. It is a revealed order, and it is an order. Behind that order is the God of the Bible, the God of Genesis. Behind Creation Order is the Creator. Behind the Natural Law is the supernatural Lawgiver.
Now, one of the interesting things we should note is that all I have stated there would have been noncontroversial at the time of the American founding. For one thing, the set of intellectual circumstances at the time was such that, prior to Darwin, there was really no other explanation for the existence of the world. The only explanation for creation was the prior existence of the Creator. Western civilization was the inheritance of Christendom, with a very clear biblical worldview, and there really was no alternative cosmology. At least not until Darwin. This is where Richard Dawkins’s interesting statement comes to mind – that it was impossible to be an intellectually fulfilled atheist until Darwin. The dominant worldview of the age was not merely supernatural, not merely Christian, but explicitly Protestant. Historians even refer to the existence in North America of a Protestant Empire.
And we do see this great break in modernity with the arrival of a modern secular metaphysic and what was claimed to be a modern secular ontology, but it’s an empty ontology that comes with absolutely nothing determinative. What does it mean to affirm rights endowed by our Creator, when the Creator is denied? Our entire system of rights and reality is based in a Christian ontology and morality, which is based upon Jewish antecedents in both general and special revelation.
The secular experiment that is now underway, and has been underway for some time, is now seen in retrospect as that which is actually based upon nothing at all, nothing ontological, nothing in terms of reality, no particular metaphysic. You see this reference now in open arguments made among the Left. The ideological and political Left no longer shares any objective moral order. It seeks to impose a new morality (and view of reality) that explicitly rejects the ontology and the ontological commitments of the Christian tradition. But the Left brings to the table absolutely no ontological commitments of its own. It’s all just politics and power. It’s all they can see.
A conservatism that plays the same game and shares the same assumptions is no genuine conservatism. It just a language game or a way of playing for time.
You look at American history, at the Protestant empire, the longstanding Christian consensus, and then we understand the rise of conservatism, which came as a response to the early cleavages in our society and in particular to the Wilsonian period and beyond in the 20th century. Then, suddenly, there was this enormous appreciation among many conservative Americans for the work of someone like Edmund Burke, but it was a half-hearted appropriation of Burke. The appropriated right was Burke’s understanding of the importance of the tradition and the binding authority of tradition on society. The part many left behind was also essential to Burke. And that is the existence of an ontological order behind that tradition, truth behind that tradition. Ontology behind the tradition.
You look in the United States, and even much of what’s been called conservative turns out to be either a conservatism which is another form of liberalism, or conservatism that is nothing but an attempt at a delayed fuse. You look at back at previous Republican administrations and you understand that we can see that that’s exactly the strategy that was undertaken for so long. The post-Dobbs position now makes that very clear, even in conversations within the Republican Party. Behind all of this is also the experience of the Reagan Revolution, and behind that William F. Buckley, National Review, and fusionism.
Let me be clear: I’m not denying that Christian conservatives can have secular allies. I’m not denying that we can share vast areas of common agreement and common concern, but I am saying that at the end of the day, without an ontological commitment which is grounded in theological conviction, I don’t believe there’s any lasting conservatism to be found. Actually, I am certain that without ontological commitments (grounded in theism), conservatism is just an endless negotiation with progressivism and its progeny.
Conservatism has to be grounded in a commitment to truth. The fight to conserve reality is going to be very costly. If we are not contending for revealed truth, if our position and argument is just another theory to be placed alongside competing theories, an argument to be placed alongside other arguments – if that’s all there is to it, we are doomed.
That is not what I believe is at the very core of our argument and at the core of our convictions. An impotent conservatism that is grounded in no ontology cannot sustain itself, cannot perpetuate itself. It cannot accomplish its stated aims. It cannot defend its most basic principles and postulates. A secular worldview, consistently held, denies what we believe to be absolutely necessary and foundational.
Now, if you want to see evidence of what I mean, just look at the collapse of Protestant liberalism. Last year marked the hundredth anniversary of J. Gresham Machen’s famous book Christianity and Liberalism, in which he rightly argued that the conflict between the orthodox and the liberals in the churches was not a conflict among Christians, but a conflict between adherents of two different religions – the Christians versus the liberals. He was absolutely right, and the tragedy of liberal Protestantism is that it has become so endlessly accommodationist that it is merely a cartoon of the age. That is what accommodation produces. That is what denying ontology produces.
What we see in the larger society is the collapse of conviction, the replacement of Christianity with a new religion. That’s why we shouldn’t be surprised by the rise of Marxism in all its different forms, such as critical theory. It is a reminder to us that when Adolf Von Harnack, the paradigmatic German liberal, argued that modern Christians must learn to separate the kernel and the husk of Christianity, keeping the kernel and throwing the husk away. You keep the kernel, which is religious experience, and you get rid of the husk, which is the claims of divine revelation. What you end up with is not theological liberation but European decadence. A secular conservatism cannot meet the challenge of the day, and an accommodationist Christianity will do no better. A flimsy theism will disappear in the midst of modernity. Most has disappeared already.
In Robert Kagan’s latest book, he makes an amazingly honest argument: “Liberalism is not inherently about progress, therefore, except the progress that comes from the expanding recognition of people’s rights. It has no teleology, no final resting point toward which it aims.” What an amazing statement. He admits the bare fact that there is no end game to liberalism. It is an endlessly open game with no teleology at all. There is no ultimate goal to the unfolding of inevitable Hegelian progress. The revolution never ends. We have been warned.
My response is simple. The only answer to that argument cannot be anything short of ontological in force, and that ontology has to be grounded in theism.
Cardinal Manning, perhaps an unusual person for an evangelical Protestant Christian to cite, said something profoundly true and nearly irreducible in terms of words. He said famously, “All human conflict is ultimately theological.” I want to end by saying this is exactly right. The cardinal nailed it. All human conflict is ultimately theological. Many will claim there is no theology here, nothing remotely theological. Don’t believe your eyes.
But the reality is all human conflict is ultimately theological. It is good to know what the alternatives are. It is good to know the challenge we face. It is good to speak honestly.
We face the most insidious attacks upon human dignity and the sanctity of life, the goodness of marriage and family, the structures of human society, even the reality of good and evil. We live amidst a great rebellion against transcendent reality, the good, the beautiful, and the true. Our answer to that cannot be less than political. Our answer to that cannot be less than cultural. It cannot be less than strategic. And I also want to say it cannot be less than theological, and it is good and necessary that we acknowledge this truth
I speak as a Christian theologian. I do not want to confuse Christian theology with some vague idea of nationalism or conservatism. Vague ideas will not hold. I want to say that I do not believe this nation and all that it represents can survive abandoning its theological roots. We will recover those roots and commitments or lose everything.

More than 10,000 Southern Baptists gathered in Indianapolis last week for the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention. The SBC was confronted by an unusually urgent set of decisions this year, and the messengers, as those sent by the churches are known, had a full agenda.
That agenda included several blockbuster actions on issues of controversy in the larger culture as well as regular reports from the convention’s ministries and boards. Anyone who thinks the annual meeting of the SBC is boring should come and watch next year in Dallas. This year, there wasn’t a spare moment on the agenda.
SBC president Bart Barber of Texas finished his term only after he presided over a complicated meeting with massive challenges. The first of these challenges is presiding in a way that allows a maximum number of messengers to speak to issues, following the convention’s adopted rules. In a hotly contested election that required three ballots, conservative North Carolina pastor Clint Pressley was elected the convention’s next president. It had been a long time since six candidates were nominated for the office at a single convention. The tellers committee got a real workout.
In terms of pressing business, the two issues that loomed largest as controversies were a proposed constitutional amendment that would have defined the use of the title “pastor” for any woman as grounds to find a church no longer in “friendly cooperation” with the SBC. That measure, passed last year by a large margin, required another supermajority vote in this year’s convention. On the second vote the measure failed by only a few percentage points. Interestingly, the same messengers made the SBC’s convictions on the matter clear by removing a prominent church from the “friendly cooperation” status by a very large margin—and over the same issue. The historic First Baptist Church of Alexandria, Va., was removed from the “friendly cooperation” status after the congregation had expressed its support for women serving as pastors. The SBC’s confession of faith states that “the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture,” and messengers showed their unity on this question. The constitutional question is likely to arise again.
The convention took action on issues ranging from sex abuse prevention to support for Israel in its war against Hamas, but the other big headline had to do with something most messengers probably did not expect to confront—issues related to IVF.
The IVF resolution turned into instant headline news. Frankly, evangelical Christians have been late to get serious on this issue, and it was the recent Supreme Court of Alabama decision that served to focus evangelical attention. To put the issue bluntly, most evangelicals are reluctant to engage the issue. Far too many Christians say they believe in the sanctity and dignity of human life at every stage, from fertilization to natural death, but when the issue turns to the massive ethical issues related to IVF, many evangelicals, including far too many Southern Baptists, have refused to connect the dots.
The resolution does connect those dots, and it passed by a large margin after open debate on the convention floor. The resolution recognizes that many Christian couples “experience the searing pain of infertility” and affirmed that “all children are a gift from the Lord regardless of the circumstances of their conception.”
But the resolution goes on to state that “though all children are to be fully respected and protected, not all technological means of assisting human reproduction are equally God-honoring or morally justified.” The resolution listed many of the grave concerns about the technology of IVF, with particular reference to current standard procedures that produce untold thousands of “excess” human embryos destined for eventual destruction, often involve the selection of embryos based on quality or preferences, may involve human experimentation on embryos, and involve a host of other related issues. At the top of that list is now the reality that IVF is part of a giant human reproduction industry that turns human embryos into consumer products that are marketed to single women, same-sex couples, and a host of others.
Response was swift and predictable. MSNBC host Joe Scarborough rejected the pro-life argument in general, and the SBC resolution specifically, by referring to the SBC action as “very judgmental” and “very driven by politics.” Well, that last statement is false on its face. The SBC gains nothing politically by speaking up for human embryos. We speak up because we truly believe that human life is sacred from the moment of fertilization. That is what evangelical Christians have said we believe for decades as we have fought against abortion. Did we not mean it?
The SBC resolution affirms “the unconditional value and right to life of every human being, including those in an embryonic stage,” and calls on believers “to only utilize reproductive technologies consistent with that affirmation.”
Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post went after me in particular, arguing that “Mohler speaks for a minority that believes all abortion, from the moment of conception, is murder.” Well, he got that much right. Robinson went on to argue for a woman’s right “to decide whether to terminate her pregnancy”—categorically. No one said this battle for human dignity and unborn life would be easy, and we clearly have a lot of work to do. But I must say that I am very thankful to be part of a convention of Baptists that will take a stand for life and adopt one of the first major statements on IVF to come from any Protestant denomination. This will not be the last moral witness we will need to make on this urgent issue, but it was an historic start.

I have never known anything other than being a Southern Baptist, and to be honest, that means being a very happy Southern Baptist, happy that there is a Southern Baptist Convention, happy that I was raised from the time I was in cradle role within the context of the Southern Baptist Convention at its churches. And now for more than 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary here in Louisville.
From time to time, it’s pretty clear that an impending Southern Baptist Convention meeting comes with a little more importance and urgency than is sometimes the norm, and history tends to turn on such years as Southern Baptists meet together. Now, I want to start out by telling you I have a lot of confidence in Southern Baptists. I have so much confidence in Southern Baptists, that I am not going to let any one annual meeting determine what I believe to be the health or faithfulness of the SBC. I think in humility, we are all working out some things over time, but it’s that very context that leads me to want to at least share a word of encouragement, and I hope exhortation to the Southern Baptist Convention, as we get ready to meet in Indianapolis.
I think we do recognize that this year’s a bit different. There are so many issues on the table, and honestly many of them are very important, important not only to doing the business of the Convention within a two or three day period, but quite honestly setting the direction of the Southern Baptist Convention as we look to the future. I also have to speak from personal experience having lived through so much of the development of the SBC, the history of the SBC. I came to adulthood with the Conservative Resurgence in the Southern Baptist Convention raising so many issues of urgent concern, and it was clear to me that those were legitimate and urgent issues of concern. And now we’re at a very interesting point and I just want to speak directly to a couple of things that I think are particularly pressing as we look to the SBC meeting in Indianapolis.
One of them is that we face an escapable theological responsibility.
There are times when the SBC simply has to stand up and say, this is what we believe. This defines the boundaries of our cooperation. This is central and very important to our identity as Southern Baptists. The SBC when it was founded in 1845 was in a very different world in many ways, but I’m very thankful for the founding wisdom at that time of understanding that one of the key issues is churches that are in friendly cooperation with the Southern Baptist Convention. And I think we all know that in an increasingly secular society, all kinds of pressures are going to continue to come up against us, which means that Southern Baptists are going to have to be more clear about doctrine and about what we believe the Bible clearly teaches than was the case in the past. We’re having to say things out loud that previous generations of Southern Baptist didn’t even have to say.
One of the things we have to say is that the office of pastor is limited to men, as qualified by Scripture. There’s an entire pattern of biblical complementarianism, which is very important here. And we understand that Southern Baptists, I believe, still are quite aware and quite convictional about the fact that the Office of Pastor’s restricted to men. Now, here’s where confusion among us becomes very dangerous and very subversive to our ability to cooperate. That’s why I believe that it’s very important that we recognize, that our confession of faith, the Baptist Faith and Message comes with very clear assertions and it comes with consequences. Inevitably, we are going to have to define many of these issues by how much we really are in friendly cooperation with one another. Now, there are those who say this is just one of those issues that has arisen.
It’s not central and essential. Let me just say that the Southern Baptist Convention has been struggling with this issue and seeking to articulate this conviction for 40 years. This is not a suddenly developing issue. What has arisen is the fact that some churches are, quite honestly, straightforwardly telling us that they are basically out of sync with the Southern Baptist Convention on the issue of women preaching and women holding a pastoral office. And this is where honestly, I think the only way for the Southern Baptist Convention to deal with this is to do so by some mechanisms such as the bylaw amendment that was adopted last year and approved and now comes before messengers again. I really believe that this bylaw is very important. I believe that it isn’t developing anything new for the SBC in terms of conviction, but it’s basically just applying the convictions we’ve been saying for decades frame the reality of our cooperation.
I also want to say that even as I support the amendment and hope to see it passed again and overwhelmingly as a statement of common conviction, I want to point back to the convention just last year, 2023 in New Orleans when it came to dealing with this question with some specific churches, the SBC did so with clarity and with overwhelming consensus. That didn’t mean it was easy, but it did mean that Southern Baptists recognized it was important. I don’t want to set up the Southern Baptist Convention to have to do this year after year after year as if we don’t know where we stand on this issue. Southern Baptists really do believe in the autonomy of the local church. We can’t force any church to be a part of the Southern Baptist Convention, but the SBC also has the responsibility to define what are the boundaries, what is the basis, the foundation for the cooperation that brings us together for common work. And so the phrase, the autonomy of the local church is precious to us because a church that disagrees with us is free to go associate with churches with whom they’re in full agreement. The Southern Baptist Convention also has the equal right, and the responsibility to set the parameters of our own cooperation. Now, let’s be clear. No one said that’s going to be easy. Frankly, we don’t even know what issues we might face in a matter of just a few short years, but I do know this: given shape of the culture, given the secularizing pressures of the age, I don’t think anyone thinks that list is going to get shorter. I think in honesty, we all recognize it’s going to get longer. Southern Baptists just want to make sure we get the list right.
I also want to say that I think it’s really important we recognize that this is an issue of biblical obedience. This is not just a question of biblical interpretation and the moment we begin defining some issues as just matters of biblical interpretation, the question becomes, well, which are those? Obviously the liberal Protestant denominations put basically everything in that category. I think Southern Baptists know better than that.
Let’s be honest. There are hard things Southern Baptists sometimes have to face, but here’s the great good news. Think of how many Southern Baptist churches have been so faithful, so generous, so cooperative for so long. I want to make sure that continues in the future and I want to make sure our churches are excited about being a part of the work that binds us together: sends missionaries to the end of the world, trains, preachers to stand in the pulpit and has Southern Baptists on the front lines where it matters. I’m excited about that. I want to see that continue.
I’m looking forward to being with you in Indianapolis. I really do trust Southern Baptist when we get together to do the right thing sometimes, eventually. I am speaking to this today because I want to encourage Southern Baptist to do what I believe is the right thing, which is to arrive and uphold our convictions clearly, to send a very certain sound. To make very clear, not only for now, but for the future of the Southern Baptist Convention, we really are settled on this issue and we need to move on because I guarantee you there are other pressing challenges yet to come. I hope and pray Southern Baptist will be up for those as well. In the meantime, let’s pray together for the Southern Baptist Convention. Let’s talk to one another honestly and kindly about these matters and let’s show up with conviction in Indianapolis. I’ll see you there.

You can’t make this up. Late last week the White House released a statement from President Biden proclaiming March 31, Easter Sunday, as the 2024 Transgender Day of Visibility. Biden bragged about his support for LGBTQ political goals and declared to the transgender community: “You are America, and my entire Administration and I have your back.”
An explosion of controversy quickly ensued, and the White House pointed to the fact that the president had also released an (extremely short) affirmation of Easter. When many Americans were shocked and outraged by the declaration of Transgender Day of Visibility—on Easter Sunday, no less—the White House responded that President Biden had recognized the transgender event every year he has been in the White House and that, though Easter moves on the calendar, the transgender celebration is regularly scheduled on the calendar for March. Just a coincidence, the White House insisted. Spokesperson Andrew Bates told ABC News: “As a Christian who celebrates Easter with family, President Biden stands for bringing people together and upholding the dignity and freedoms of every American.” He continued: “Sadly, it’s unsurprising politicians are seeking to divide and weaken our country with cruel, hateful, and dishonest rhetoric. President Biden will never abuse his faith for political purposes or for profit.”
What Bates was selling is unadulterated nonsense (though he did score a point against former President Trump’s recent Bible promotion). Not even this White House could have missed that the transgender declaration was scheduled to collide with Easter. They don’t care. The Transgender Day of Visibility is more important to their election campaign. As for Biden, he uses his Catholicism as a cloak without acknowledging that he is a living contradiction of many official Catholic teachings—most importantly the Church’s absolute opposition to abortion.
But there is a deeper reality here that Christians must recognize. The White House action was an affront to Christianity and to morality, to be sure. And yet, we should pause for a moment to recognize that, despite best efforts of LGBTQ activists, the White House, and the cultural elites, it’s not working.
Surveys reveal that support for the transgender revolution is not growing, but receding. This is especially true when the question is children and teenagers, but it is extended to all ages. The transgender revolution is losing ground. Medical authorities in Britain, for example, decided to close the infamous Tavistock clinic that had provided some level of trans procedures for teenagers and young people. Country by country, medical authorities and governments are taking a step back from the kind of blank check that the Biden White House was celebrating. While in recent years much of the LGBTQ movement has moved forward without major opposition in the larger culture, LGBTQ authorities express open concern about what appears to be a decline in support for the trans logic.
There are surely many factors behind this recent pattern, but Christians should ponder one important fact with vast worldview significance. Pushing a Transgender Day of Visibility has backfired. It turns out that reality is a hard thing to ignore and that biology has a way of insisting on facts. The more Americans see the reality of the transgender claims, the more they have to decide if they can play the game of delusion and denial. One central lesson of this phenomenon is that a strategy of delusion and denial—even when driven by sexual and gender revolutionaries certain of their inevitable victory—isn’t working.
Or, to put it another way, the more the transgender movement insists on being visible, the more the truth is likely to show itself. Americans tend to be sympathetic to a delusion, but they are not buying into the idea that a transgender “man” is really a man or that a transgender “woman” is really a woman. They may try to play along for a while, but biology trumps ideology and the very real damage done to human beings in the name of the transgender movement is increasingly undeniable. Some of this is due to the “detransitioning” movement’s brave honesty, but the loss of support seems mostly tied to the failure of the transgender ideology to win the battle of the eyes and the battle against reality.
The idea of forcing cultural acceptance and overcoming moral objections by demanding “visibility” is part of the social activism of the LGBTQ revolutionaries. Activists and their ideological friends at intersection of ideology and political theory were certain that making LGBTQ identities more visible in society (on television, in popular culture, in schools, etc.) would lead to an inevitable acceptance of transgender identity claims. It isn’t working. President Biden may declare Transgender Day of Visibility, but he can’t make that visibility work as intended.
To put the matter bluntly, an increasing number of Americans realize that what they are being told isn’t true. You can declare war against anatomy and biology, but it isn’t going to end well. Different forms of cultural and legal coercion may be used to get people to deny what they see with their own eyes, but that is not a long-term strategy for success. The White House can declare this past Sunday (yes, Easter Sunday, insultingly enough) as Transgender Day of Visibility, but they can’t make visibility work for them.
One day soon, all of this—every bit of it—will be visible as the lie that it is. In the meantime, real bodies are being mutilated and real lives are being damaged. We know it’s the truth, and we dare not be complicit in a lie.

Vice President Kamala Harris went to Minnesota last week in order to make history, the White House claimed. She made history, to be sure. She became the first U.S. president or vice president to visit an operational abortion facility. Harris’s move becomes the latest forward advance of the Culture of Death. Now, a facility that exterminates unborn human babies becomes a background for a campaign event and the foreground for making abortion central to the presidential campaign—and at every political level.
Harris went to the Planned Parenthood center in St. Paul on a highly orchestrated campaign visit that also included the state’s governor, Democrat Tim Walz, and Rep. Betty McCollum, also a Democrat. Press reports tell us that the vice president was greeted at the facility by the chief medical officer for Planned Parenthood North Central States, as well as other staff related to the abortion center. Just to make the point clearly, the clinic stated that the vice-presidential visit did not interrupt the center’s services. Evidently, they didn’t even put abortion on hold. That’s so Planned Parenthood—and right in your face.
Harris delivered comments in the facility’s lobby, warning of threats to abortion rights nationwide. “These attacks against an individual’s right to make decisions about their own body are outrageous, and, in many instances, just plain old immoral,” Harris said. “How dare these elected leaders believe they are in a better position to tell women what they need, to tell women what is in their best interest.” She concluded: “We have to be a nation that trusts women.”
Well, Kamala Harris is a woman we can trust to worship unreservedly at the altar of abortion. While President Joe Biden is described as holding to some reticence about abortion rights, the reality is that Biden has assigned Harris the campaign responsibility of making abortion the winning issue for Democratic candidates in November. The party is even working to get abortion measures on the ballot in some states just to produce an electoral wave. The charade about Biden’s reticence on abortion is all an act. Biden is now the most pro-abortion president in American history. He wants it to be the winning issue for Democrats this cycle and he personally deputized Harris to run lead. Only the groveling press and party co-conspirators play along with the game.
A closer look at Harris’s comments at the facility is also in order. She dared to invoke traditional moral categories when she stated that opposition to abortion is “just plain old immoral.” Well, look at you, using that old-fashioned moral language. Of course, what is “plain old immoral” is the killing of unborn human beings in the womb. Harris was using the propaganda technique of language reversal, making moral truth stand on its head. Note also that she referred to “an individual” who might seek an abortion before turning to refer to those “individuals” as women once it was convenient to underline her message to women voters. Wow. It’s hard to keep all this language straight when you want to go after the women’s vote and the LGBTQ vote at the same time.
The vice president’s visit to the abortion facility represents a turning point in the campaign strategy and optics of the Democratic Party. Now that Harris, accompanied by Minnesota’s governor and a member of Congress, has made this campaign stop, such events will become standard fare for Democratic candidates. A wall has been breached and now any Democratic candidate who does not make a stop at an abortion facility will be considered out of step by both party activists and abortion advocates. That’s just how campaign strategy works. One day you “make history,” and next thing you know it’s just one more event on the way to Election Day.
Don’t miss what all this means. Kamala Harris did make history by becoming the first president or vice president of the United States to visit an abortion facility and affirm its deadly work. But the scariest thing is that it made few headlines. The New York Times put its report on Harris’s visit on page A16 of the print edition. The abortion industry of death will now just turn to the Democratic Party and ask: “What did you do for us lately?” You should shudder to think of what is yet to come.
Abortion is the willful death of an unborn human being. An abortion clinic is the engine of death turned into an industry of carnage. The clinic proudly stated that it was still “open and seeing patients” as the vice president spoke in the lobby. There was absolutely no acknowledgement of a baby at all. So far as the abortion logic goes, the baby is not a meaningful moral consideration. Get the abortion and get on with it.
Vice President Harris surely knows that her political future is tied to the re-election of President Biden. She also knows, even better than the rest of us, her chances of becoming president if Biden is re-elected. She intended to send a signal with her attention-getting visit to the abortion facility and her eager advocacy for abortion rights. She did send a signal. She and her party are dead-set on making abortion central to American culture. That’s why Kamala went to the death camp.
