The topography,soil, and climate of the Santa Rosa Plain produce a mosaic of interwoven anddiverse habitats that provide homes to many different plants and animals,including rare and endemic species. This rich ecosystem makes the Laguna aspecial and significant place for us all. Join us for a lively visual journeyto meet some of the life of the Laguna and to gain deeper understanding andconnection to our shared home environment.
Denise Cadman has been an environmental steward of theLaguna for more than 25 years. She grew up in the wilds of Rincon Valley andearned her BA, secondary teaching credential, and Master of Arts degree inbiology from Sonoma State University. She works as an Environmental Specialistfor the City of Santa Rosa focused on creek stewardship, environmentaleducation and resource management. Additionally, she teaches at Santa RosaJunior College as an adjunct faculty member in the Life Science Department.Denise has been integral to teaching and inspiring a love of the Laguna throughthe Laguna Foundation’s docent training program since its inception in 1998.Denise attributes her career in natural resource management to a love of birds.

Discover the best places and times to look for birds and howto locate them. Learn the art of HOW to look at a bird, including the mostimportant things to notice when you see one you don’t recognize. We’ll give youtips on using binoculars, getting the most out of your field guide, and evenhow to start birding by ear! We’ll touch upon bird behavior and discuss theimportance of understanding the shared characteristics within some common birdfamilies. To wrap up, we’ll look at photographs of some common birds in SonomaCounty, and use our new knowledge to analyze them together and practice the artof how to look at a bird. For the fifth concert in Redwood Arts’
Ruby Anniversary Season, we present the exciting Russian cello and piano Kouzov Duo. The St. Petersburg Musical Herald praises them with “This unusually difficult program, the five sonatas of Beethoven, was played with exceptional mastery, deep musicality, perfect taste, and style.”
Cellist Dmitry Kouzov has performed on five continents with orchestras, in recitals, and in chamber music performances. He has appeared with the St. Petersburg Symphony, the National Symphony of Ukraine, and the South Bohemian Chamber Philharmonic (Czech Republic), and the Symphony Orchestra “Classica” (Russia). He was awarded First Prize at the International Beethoven Competition in the Czech Republic and is a two-time laureate of the International Festival-Competition “Virtuosi of the Year 2000” in Russia, and the winner of the New York Cello Society Rising Star Award. He has appeared at prominent concert halls throughout his native Russia.
Recently, Mr. Kouzov made his recording debut on Naxos with three C.P.E. Bach Gamba Sonatas and a recital CD “Two Hundred Years of Cello Masterpieces” on Marquis Classics. Mr. Kouzov is a founding and active member of the Manhattan Piano Trio, with whom he has captured First Prizes at the Plowman and Yellow Springs National Chamber Music Competitions. In addition to his concert activities, Mr. Kouzov is a devoted teacher and is an Assistant Professor of Cello at the University of Illinois.
Known for her passionate interpretations and impressivetechnical facility, the Russian pianist Yulia Fedoseeva enjoys a career as asoloist, chamber musician, and teacher. She has given hundreds of performancesthroughout Russia, Holland, Portugal, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, andin the United States. In 2009 Yulia’s performances were seen and heard in PhilGrabsky’s documentary “In Search of Beethoven,” which was broadcastinternationally and shown in movie theaters worldwide.
Yulia has won many awards, including in 1997 a Special Prizeat the International Piano Competition in Jurmala, Latvia, in 2000 Grand Prixand First Prize at the International Chamber Music Competition “Coast of Hope”in Dobrich, Bulgaria, in 2004 First Prize at the Maria Yudina Piano DuoCompetition in St. Petersburg, Russia. Yulia is a devoted teacher and has beenon faculty at the St. Petersburg State Conservatoire and at the Rimsky-KorsakovMusic Lyceum for Highly Gifted Children.

and children who are homeless or at-risk of becominghomeless. Our aim is to create a welcoming safe environment where participantscan rest, rejuvenate and work towards stability. Our staff and volunteers arededicated to listening to those experiencing homelessness, and to treatingevery woman and child who comes to The Living Room with kindness, dignity andcompassion.

The Mission of The Living Room is to ease adversity and promote stability, dignity and self-reliance for women and children who are homeless, or at-risk of homelessness, in Sonoma County.
We are the only day center in Sonoma County exclusivelyserving homeless and at-risk women and their children.

Obi Kaufmann, the best-selling author of “The California Field Atlas,” brings his work to the Sonoma County Community on Tuesday, February 11 for an exclusive presentation that includes an introduction to his newest book, “The State of Water: Understanding California’s Most Precious Resource.” The acclaimed naturalist, writer, and artist grew up adventuring around Mount Diablo — and falling in love with it — before deciding in college to pursue a career in visual arts. A lifelong backpacker, Obi wrote his first book, “The California Field Atlas,” after enjoying decades of California summers, with “more days without a roof on the trail than under one in a house.” He integrates his background as an artist and a trained mathematician into his own brand of storytelling — what he calls “systems stories” — melding analysis and aesthetics through nature writing and watercolor paintings to present a new vision for the conservation of California. His books, prints, and cards will be available for sale after the presentation.

Since it began in 1984, Art from the Heart has become one ofSonoma County’s premiere fundraising events-an evening of fine art, food, andwine where artists and collectors join together in support of the UniversityArt Gallery. Art from the Heart is a silent auction featuring original,modestly priced works of art in all media donated by professional artists fromSonoma County and throughout the United States. In addition, items such asstays at local inns and hotels, theatre and museum tickets, and unique bottlesof wine and VIP tasting at local wineries are also included in the auction.
This year, there is a free preview exhibition of works to beauctioned at Saturday’s event from Wednesday, January 29 – Friday, January 31,from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the CircusMcGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, whodiscovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton mustprotect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he must also guardan abandoned egg that’s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie LaBird.
Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, and a trial, theintrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship,loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!

Groundbreaking Women in Sonoma County

who the first woman to achieve elected office inSonoma County was? The woman from Sebastopol who pioneered environmentalstudies? The woman from Santa Rosa who led the national effort to recognizewomen in history? Do you know their stories?
2020 is the centennial of the ratification of the 19thAmendment, giving women the constitutional right to vote. While different ingoal and origin, the recent #MeToo movement and women’s marches also representpivotal change and the power of the collective voice to challenge the statusquo. The Museum of Sonoma County’s upcoming exhibition, From Suffrage to#MeToo: Groundbreaking Women in Sonoma County, explores the changingexpectations, challenges, and obstacles to inclusion that women have faced andthe remarkable people who have broken through the barriers. Learning Laguna
Docents are trained volunteers who teach theLearning Laguna school program in 2nd-4th grade classrooms throughout thewatershed and during student field trips to Laguna preserves. Help the childrenof our community deepen their enthusiasm, appreciation and knowledge of theLaguna de Santa Rosa and their home environment!
Docents volunteer year-round and especially in the Fall andSpring
Docents teach during school hours (7:30 AM – 2:00 PM).Classroom visits are 2 hours (usually in the morning) and field trips to theLaguna are 3 hours, also in the morning. After training, the time commitment isapproximately 20 hours in the spring and 20 hours in the fall (and more hours arewelcome!)

Required Experience & Qualifications:
Completion of the docent training course offered every year in the spring (Nextcourse begins March 2020.)

25 Million Stitches: One Stitch for Each Refugee

A global team of almost 3000 novice stitchers,
artists, andactivists brings awareness to the plight of the 25 million refugees around theglobe with each and every hand-sewn stitch.
The Sebastopol Art Center will be hosting a week-long sewing circle to promote this global community art project to raise awareness of the growing refugee crisis. The main event will be on Sunday, January 19th at the dining room of the Sebastopol Art Center from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The event is open to all age groups. All material and instruction will be provided followed by a short presentation on the refugee crisis and discussions of how to design one’s panel.
The following week, from Tuesday 1/21 to Friday 1/24/2020, after-school sewing circles will continue at the Sebastopol Art Center from 3:30-5:30 pm.
When the hand-stitched panels are returned to Sacramento,they will be assembled into an installation with the first names of allparticipants. The first full installation will be at the Verge Center for theArts in Sacramento in June 2020. Jennifer Kim Sohn, the founder of the project,believes stitching is a way for people to engage with the global crisis.
You can organize your own sewing groups to raise awarenessin your own communities.

Join us for one of the most popular and timeless wintertopics in natural history: edible mushrooms. If you’ve ever been stopped on ahike by a curious-looking mushroom and wondered, “Could I eat that?” thispresentation is for you. The forests, grasslands, and woodlands of SonomaCounty host about 3,000 species of mushrooms, half of which are edible. Localmushroom hunter, Darvin DeShazer, will take us on a visual journey through someof his favorite local fungi fares and even offer some hints on where to findthem
NOTE: No mushroom should be eaten unless it can first bepositively identified as edible. Successful identification of mushroomsrequires practice and expertise beyond this presentation.
Darvin DeShazer is a retired science teacher with fortyyears of mushroom hunting. He is one the co-founders of SOMA (Sonoma CountyMycological Association) and creator of SOMA Camp, which is the fund raiser forhis scholarship program. His love for hunting mushrooms has resulted in over10,000 color photos of fungi on Mushroom Observer and iNaturalist andcontributed to the popular book 100 Edible Mushrooms.
