One of the reasons the Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes and traded away Alex Smith was because Mahomes had the ability to make big plays from anywhere on the field and the knock against Smith was that he was just a game manager. That’s exactly the type of quarterback that was needed Monday. Smith helped out his former team by leading Washington to a 23-17 win over the Steelers giving Pittsburgh their first loss and moving the Chiefs into a tie for the best overall record in the NFL at 11-1. Smith was steady, 31 of 46 for 296 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers against a stingy Steelers defense.

Since 2013, Adam Wainwright’s Big League Impact organization has raised over $5.8 million for charitable causes. Wainwright won the 2020 Roberto Clemente Award after being nominated for the award five times and now joins five other Cardinals -- Lou Brock (1975), Ozzie Smith (1995), Albert Pujols (2008), Carlos Beltran (2013) and Yadier Molina (2018) -- who have won the award.

Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and other athletes are using their celebrity and their sport as a platform to speak up for equality. Why are we listening this time around?

It's laughable, absolutely laughable what Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt said yesterday on 590 The Fan in St. Louis that "the industry (baseball) isn't very profitable." He's not necessarily lying but if that's the justification for wanting to skim money from player's contracts, it's an absolute joke.

Why do I support the players at this time?

I believe the players should make the same amount per game, because the owners are still making a profit. When DeWitt in St. Louis and Tom Ricketts in Chicago (said the same thing last week) that baseball isn't very profitable...it's STILL profitable. Players contracts aren't tied to how many people attend the games. If that were the case, the Royals could dock their players salary after attendance dropped off by 800,000 fans over the last two years, right?

View Details

MLB has sent the Players Association a third proposal to start the season in early July that includes a 76-game season with players to receive about 75 percent of their prorated salaries if there is a full postseason, multiple outlets report. The format also includes expanding the playoffs from 10 teams to as many as 16 and would eliminate free-agent compensation for 2020.

This proposal would pay players $1.4 billion in salary. The players wanted 114 games and a full pro-rated salary that would have paid out $2.9 billion.

Here’s a trivia. Name the Missouri basketball player who never played in the NBA but sat next to Michael Jordan for years on the Chicago Bulls team bus?

The answer: Tom Dore. Tom played for Norm Stewart and was a senior the year that Steve Stipanovich and Jon Sundvold were freshman.

Dore finished up at Missouri and went to place overseas and when he returned got into broadcasting…worked at KCMO radio in Kansas City and did some radio play-by-play on the Tigers broadcasts and actually partnered with Mike Kelly. You’ll hear a little bit of that story later.

You know I was born in Chicago, there for the Bulls first three titles with Michael Jordan, here in Missouri for the second three-peat and I thought it would be cool to talk to Tom, a Chicago guy himself—and we have that Bulls and Missouri connection. Tom got in right at the start of Bulls mania and had a front row seat to Michael whether it was near the court or on the team bus or plane.

The other day I dialed him up and we pick up the conversation of when he gets the gig to announce for the Bulls.

MLB owners like a plan, they need the players to approve but there are going to be many hurdles. First and foremost, the safety of everyone involved with getting a game played...from players to stadium staff to those who will be in contact with players outside the stadium.

Secondly, the owners and players are already squabbling over how they're going to make money. Sad to think that greed could ultimately derail a return to sports.

Third and of least importance perhaps but a great distraction...the introduction of the DH in the National League. If and when baseball resumes, the DH will be used in NL ballparks.

Who are the best candidates for the job on the Cardinals roster?

Which is why the Cardinals should gladly let Marcell Ozuna slip away and go after Castellanos.  Not only does it provide an answer in the outfield, Castellanos has actually played more games at third base in his career than any other position.  He could spell Matt Carpenter over there if needed and it keeps a hot bat out of another Central Division rival's lineup.

The head football coach for Mizzou is in his fourth year and his team is slumping through a five-game losing streak with one game to play. His overall coaching record for the Tigers is below .500 and he has yet to win a bowl game. That coaches name...is Gary Pinkel.

Oddly enough, Barry Odom is going through the same hell that Pinkel went through back in 2004. Mike Alden showed the patience to stick it out at least a fifth year with Pinkel. You know how it played out. Does Jim Sterk have the patience to give Odom a fifth year to see if things work out?

Rachel Petty, an assistant trainer at Missouri Western University, said last spring it started out as a joke about how cute and fun it would be if they had a dog in their training rooms to hang out with student-athletes.  Then she saw a picture of Myron, an Australian Shepard puppy, and fell in love with his face.  She contacted a local breeder, put together a proposal for the university and just like that, Myron was officially a Griffon.

Myron spends his home life with Rachel, her husband, and daughter, but when he's at school it's all business...well...some play.  O.K. a lot of play.  That's his job.

Rachel explains that when a student-athlete is injured, sports is such a big part of their college life that dealing with the ups and downs of healing and rehab can be an emotional strain.  Myron is there to help comfort the student-athletes.

"If we could provide a dog who has proven to help ease mental anxiety and increase spirits, we're kind of ahead of the game mentally," said Rachel. "He provides stress relief...dogs have been known to reduce blood pressure, so he's just all around good for our athletes."

Missouri Western University claims to be the only Division II school in the country that uses a therapy dog like Myron and she's talked with a handful of schools around the country about Myron.

I was skeptical before I became a dog parent, but I believe dogs can truly help.  That's the backstory. I also ask Rachel some other hard-hitting questions.  For example, does Myron literally lick their wounds?  Who cleans up if Myron has an accident?  How many student-athletes fake injuries just to come to visit Myron?

To hear more about Myron, you can skip to ___ of the podcast or start from the beginning and learn how you can win big during March Madness with the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Vision Grills.  Also, Rachel was telling me how Myron knows exactly where to go when he gets to work.

Cuonzo felt the Tigers fell in love with the three-point shot on a night when they didn't have the touch (less than 30% shooting).  He wanted them to get to the rim. (They attempted on 8 foul shots).

3:00-It's still an "Us vs. Them" mentality in the St. Louis media when it comes to the NFL in L.A.  I'll run through some figures and stats and cut through the spin. Conclusion?  The NFL is better off in L.A. than St. Louis.

7:50-The biggest reason the Rams left St. Louis to go back out west is now the same reason Major League Soccer is hesitant to award St. Louis it's next franchise.

13:40-My Mizzou-Tennessee preview.  How Torrence and Tilmon can play a role in tonight's matchup.

17:00-George Young from KFRU/KLIK radio is my guest.  He read the NCAA's investigative findings into Mizzou's rogue tutor.  When you hear the results, the penalties will upset you even more.

Part two of my conversation with Mizzou athletic director Jim Sterk.

He talks about officiating in SEC athletics. Do the Tigers really feel like outsiders in the SEC? Plus does he feel the college football playoff format need to change?

View Details

Mizzou Athletic Director Jim Sterk invited me to his office.  In part one of this two-part conversation, Sterk lays out their aggressive plan for increasing members and donations to their Tiger Scholarship Fund.

Why did he give Barry Odom a contract raise and extension?

Even though he was caught by TV cameras less than happy and using colorful language (for which he was playfully ribbed by co-workers and his three daughters) following a tough loss, Sterk tells me he doesn't need to be front and center at sporting events.

I don't mind the NFL overtime rules, but the league needs to do something about instant replay.  How about they just ditch it?  I'll explain.

Hot takes from Andy Reid--got outcoached again in a big game.  Patrick Mahomes--played better than Brady.  Saints coach Sean Payton--big whiner.  Drew Brees--right on when it comes to the missed call.

You've already heard the story of Dave Cochran, the guy living out of his SUV, who helped Chiefs player Jeff Allen get out of the snow. Allen is sending Dave to the AFC game on Sunday, but I have a conversation with Dave. He's overwhelmed by the amount of love and support the people of Kansas City have given him over the last couple of days.

He's just looking to straighten out his life. Listen to our conversation.

I'll share the details inside the podcast but this really roasted me.  Mizzou beats Tennessee.  Tigers player Lauren Aldridge claps her hands after a big play during the game.  Vols coach Holly Warlick throws a mini-tantrum.  Aldridge apologizes for showing emotion.  This stuff has to stop!

Plus, Philly Francis is he our new football expert?  He joins the podcast to give us his picks for this weekend.

Hot takes from Swinney and Saban following Alabama's loss

Cuonzo previews the Mizzou SEC home opener vs the Vols

Yes I'm a believer in "history repeats itself."  The Chiefs have never beat the Colts in four previous playoff games.  Andy Reid has only managed one playoff win in Kansas City and so far two of the three quarterbacks selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft have lost (Mitchell Trubisky and DeShaun Watson), plus the last pick of the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft (Lamar Jackson) lost on Sunday.  It's not easy for young quarterbacks to win playoff football games and the Colts are one of the hottest teams right now...so yes Chiefs fans should be nervous!

The biggest D-bag Bears fans (listener discretion advised)

Plus hear from Nick Saban and Dabo Swinney...it's Alabama and Clemson, again!

The Chiefs have the week off and while we'll be paying attention to the AFC games this weekend for obvious reasons, this Bears-Eagles matchup features the last two former KC offensive coordinators facing each other as head coaches. Happy New Year!  Let's start with some warm and fuzzies from the Liberty Bowl.  Drew Lock had a nice message for Mizzou fans as he stepped away from the microphone one final time as a Tiger.  Plus, hear offensive lineman Paul Adams' thoughts on an emotional end to his college career.  Also, how about Memphis native Johnathan Johnson?  A career game for the junior back in his hometown.

Then, let's get into what needs to happen for next year as we dive into the X's and O's.  For starters, that kicking game has to change...it's brutal.  Even higher priority is fixing Barry Odom's management of time and timeouts and some of his decision making.

This is a special Saturday edition of the podcast.  You'll hear from Willie P who is in Dallas.  He'll talk about how Notre Dame could beat Clemson, plus we'll talk briefly about the Sooners-Tide matchup.  OU can win if this turns into a shootout.

Drew Lock looks back on his four years at Mizzou.  He wants a bowl victory more for his teammates than for himself, but when you hear him speak a ninth win and bowl victory would mean a lot.

The Chiefs lead the NFL in scoring average, but haven't hit that mark in their last three games.  Eric Berry is still banged up.  This should be a win in KC but how effective will the Chiefs be heading into the playoffs?
