Join me in studying the psychology of the extraordinary people interviewed on the show, who have overcome extreme adversity but survived and then thrived to tell the tale...
The People Building podcast is delivered by Gemma Bailey - a trainer of NLP, qualified Hypnotherapist, author, content creator and entrepreneur who has spent decades studying the mind, body and human behaviour. Using her experience from private therapy practice and training, Gemma will unpick what's going on in the minds of the most resilient people and teach you how to develop those same skills within yourself.
As well as hearing about our guest's edge-of-your-seat life experiences, you'll join Gemma in studying the psychology behind the stories. She'll help you to learn to identify the subtle nuances - a pause that lasted too long, the choice of words or the underlying drivers and values - that would, to the untrained ear go unnoticed.
This regular podcast greatly values listener's contributions and questions and so we invite you to fully engage with our guests and our content. We politely request that you leave a review (5 stars is perfect ;-)) and leave a comment telling other subscribers about your favourite episode so far so that they know where to begin as they dive into the back catalogue.

Nicole grew up in a hyper-religious family – except, as her parents were from different religious factions there was no agreement about which was the right one to follow or the right way to live life. This created a great deal of rigidity in her family about how to ‘be’, and influenced Nicole’s decision to join the Air Force, where she experienced a horrific accident.
As Nicole was thrust through the windscreen of a moving vehicle, tearing her body apart, her soul left her body and she found herself not wanting to return to it. Later, on the operating table, she left her body again. Years later the events surrounding this were confirmed by the operating physician. For Nicole, those crucial moments were filled with the presence of a spirit guide who convinced her to return as her work on earth was not yet complete.
She not only came back, but she began to function at a whole new level, explaining her DNE (near-death experience) from a scientific perspective in her book.
Nicole has had to make peace with so many aspects of her life; her parent’s style of parenting, the cause of the accident, and the ramifications of it on a physical, emotional and mental health level.
Geographically, she has returned close to where she was born and in doing so, is making peace with her parents, having realised that their trauma has been instrumental in their relationship with her.
There are many pivotal lessons to be gained from this. Nicole has a very flexible way of thinking about healing and recovery from trauma. Most importantly she teaches us that if you are fearing death, you will never truly live.

After developing a successful business and living in a long marriage, Bill Heinrich walked out on his life. Expecting a journey of self-discovery, he found himself crying in the foetal position on the floor for 3 days.
Bill realised his life was out of control and was ruled by his sense of wanting to be liked and an out-of-control anger.
I’ll say this; Bill has what I would term as, some woo-woo ways of thinking. He found guidance and peace using numerology – a belief in a mystical relationship between numbers and events.
Do I believe in numerology, no. But do I believe in Bill? Yes. 100%. I can’t give you much of a logical explanation but Bill totally won me over. He has an excellent way of reframing and creating new perceptions with the language he uses. If you like the ‘L’ in NLP, you shouldn’t miss this show.

Matthew is a man with a moral compass that has caused him to become an advocate for others in challenging circumstances.
Following a difficult upbringing with alcoholic parents, Matthew was homeless by the age of 17. This caused a revaluation of his life that led to him joining the army and getting married – all whilst 17 years old! He later became interested in law enforcement and moved into a career in the military police followed by a long stretch with the US border patrol. However, an unexpected and sudden shift in his health caused a revaluation. Matthews’s attention became even more set upon helping others who were experiencing difficulties in life, following a career in the military.

Caroline has always identified as a drinker of alcohol. She was not only the one who rallied everyone to have shots, she was the one who got everyone at the bar to begin with! In 2013/2014, her husband had a pretty serious health scare and her brother died by suicide that was when she went from a party drinker to someone who was drinking to cope. No one knew this, she continued to perform at work and everything looked great from the outside, but she felt like I was driving with the emergency brake on and knew that she wanted to make some changes to her drinking.
Then, on a business trip in London, a colleague hit on her. Although she politely rebuffed him, she couldn’t stop thinking about the “what ifs.”
That was her last hangover, in August 2016.

Michael Herst always knew he would work in law enforcement. It wasn’t just a job, it was a way of life that fully underpinned his identity. He was drawn to this by way of positive rebellion – he came from a family that struggled with alcoholism and drug use and so it’s no coincidence that DUI enforcement became his specialism.
Michael made his way up to a sergeant’s role leading him to be involved in capturing two of America’s most wanted as well as making some people important, positive impacts in people’s lives.
He was on the detail for two different presidents and the prime minister of Japan. He developed skills that enabled him to talk people out of suicide attempts and dealt with cases of serious domestic violence.
But the most significant thing that Michael did was not by choice. It was a reinvention of his life after a serious accident that finished his career whilst in the line of duty….

Abandoned by her mother at a young age, Ashlee was excited to gain a step Mom to provide that female role modelling in the home. However, the family home soon became a place of childhood abuse and volatility. As soon as she could escape, she did.

The Trolly Problem: The Trolly Problem Wikipedia Page
Are there any firm rules on how to do the right thing? Does it come down to considering the ecology of a situation and continuing to do right even if it feels wrong?
Perhaps deciding what is right comes from thinking forwards to explore the longer-term ramifications of a decision. But is there always a black and white solution to help you choose the right way forward.
Psychology would show us that the best indicator about how a person might act in the future is to look at their past behaviours. In considering what the right thing is for someone else, we can at least consider other similar scenarios and use those as a guide as to what the consequences may be.

Do you struggle to stop yourself from taking things personally? Here is the Ted Talk by Frederik Imbo: https://youtu.be/LnJwH_PZXnM Sometimes it’s difficult to shake off the feeling that it’s about you - even when you logically know it’s not! Today we’re going to explore some strategies to help you when you’ve taken something to heart and need to move on. In addition, it’s worth exploring why something has affected you - maybe because at some level you know it is true. But maybe it’s not truly about you and in fact, about the other person. In order to maintain your worth you need to have high self-esteem, self-worth, self-confidence etc. Developing a thick skin and being able to dust yourself off requires all those important ‘selfs’ to be in good condition Watch on Youtube here: https://youtu.be/zAwgUEXvaZo Missed the previous show? Advice can be pretty cheap a lot of the time but now and again some really good, life-altering advice comes along. If you are the giver of good advice, it’s important to offer it in a way that allows the recipient an opportunity to take it onboard or not.
However, there are times when advice needs to become direction and an adjustment in the delivery to differentiate the two is important.
Right now the world is full of good advice and bad. There’s a lot of people with some very strong opinions. As you’ll learn here, I took the advice to have a covid vaccination. That’s because I believe in what the vast majority of the scientific population believe too – that immunity is a team effort.
If this is not a risk you personally wish to take, that is your prerogative, just as this is mine.
Enjoy the good advice.

In this podcast we explore whether there are core principles that help to increase a person’s feelings of hopefulness and how cognitive behaviour strategies such as NLP can help us to develop more hope.
Using real-life examples I have come across I’ll give you my honest opinion on the definitions of a hopeful person, as explained in the nurturing hope article that is shared.
Furthermore, we discuss how to increase hope in a depressed patient and how just a flicker of hope can be the much-needed ingredient to get them on the right path to improvement.

I Think You’ve Got a Problem: How to Raise a Mental Health or Mental Illness Concern
Can be found here: https://youtu.be/STonoVySaDw

Around 25% of people will suffer from some kind of mental health problem in their life. That means there is a strong likelihood that we will all come into contact with someone who is experiencing a problem at some point in time. Some mental health concerns are at a level whereby people can still continue to live, socialise and communicate in spite of their struggles whilst other mental health illnesses are more severe and require ongoing support from highly qualified professionals. In addition, early neurological problems can also appear on the surface to echo many of the issues we see in mental health issues. Therefore, practitioners working in mental health require awareness of the more severe conditions in order to redirect their clients when problems arise that are outside of their skillset.
Talking to someone about their mental health, especially when they lack insight, is incredibly challenging. I hope that in this video you learn some ways to have a conversation with someone that you have concerns about.
