Dollars & Sense: Financial Advice in a Language You Can Understand®

View Details

With Marc traveling this week, Marion and Christian are driving the ship for this week’s episode.

As we officially enter the summer season next week, most of our “snowbird” clients are heading back to Massachusetts after spending the winter months down south.

But that brings up a big question that most of our clients have – how do you handle changing your residence once in retirement, especially if you own two homes in two different states?

Listen along as Christian and Marion discuss differences in state income tax, insurance differences, and some of the most common ways that clients claim domicile in somewhere like Florida during retirement.

Marion is back for this week’s episode of the show after a much-deserved vacation. During her time off, she noticed the overwhelming number of driverless cars she saw in service in the West Coast…

But one thing that the Freedman team is consistent on is having liquidity when in retirement. Curious what they mean? Listen to the full episode to find out.

At our office, we often hear a phrase like “I was at work and my colleague told me about this…”

More often than not, it’s something about the markets, financial advice, or economic panic. But is the water cooler a better place to make financial decisions than with your advisor? We discuss in this special episode of Dollars & Sense.

Tax season has finally wrapped up. Our team received a lot of calls with a similar tax question this year… drum roll….

“Why did I owe so much?!”

Who’s to blame for the hike in what you owe? You may think it’s your accountant’s fault, but we have to say, that’s rarely the case.

Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion explain why you may have owed more money to the IRS this year, all in a language you can understand.

It’s no secret that retirement and expectations surrounding it have changed a lot over the years. Marion’s grandfather was one of the first to pay into social security when it came about during his working years. At the time, you could start collecting at the retirement age of 65 with the expectation that you wouldn’t live much longer since that was the life expectancy back then. It’s crazy to think how much things have changed over the last 90 years. Nowadays, people are still expecting to retire at age 65…but is that realistic?

If you’re looking for financial advice in a language you can understand, then Dollars & Sense is the perfect podcast for you.

It’s always interesting to us how many folks think that a financial advisor primarily talks about how best to invest your money. We’re here to bust that myth because that’s not really what we do at Freedman Financial. Now don’t get us wrong, we do invest money, and might we add, we pay close attention to what we invest that money in. However, that is not the main focus of our conversations with clients because we like to take a much more holistic view of your life and your financial situation.

We’re back for another exciting edition of Dollars & Sense. When we hear about real life stories in the office, newspaper, or on television, we try to make sense of those stories and headlines by providing financial advice in a language you can understand. And by now it’s no surprise that a lot of the headline news is sensational, so we try to bring it back down to earth and give you our two cents.

One important piece of advice we want to share with you is not to be lured into impressing other people. How many times have you caught yourself wanting to purchase an item that you normally wouldn’t buy? Items such as name brand clothing or expensive cars tend to be designed to impress others. Feeling guilty? If you’re ready to get serious about your finances, just reach out!

Welcome back to another episode of Dollars & Sense with your hosts Marc and Marion.

There’s been a lot of speculation surrounding the 2 pm Fed Meeting today (1/31/24) and whether they’re going to lower interest rates. Our guess as well as most analysts out there, is that they will not be lowering interest rates – at least for now. However, word on the street suggests there could be up to four rate cuts this year. That’s important because essentially the 10-year Treasury Bond is priced off those rates. So, why is that important? If you weren’t aware, mortgages are priced off the 10-year bond. Have we got your attention yet?

Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion talk about what the impact of a drop in interest rate means in a language you can understand.

Happy New Year and thanks for tuning into our first episode of Dollars & Sense in 2024!

At Freedman Financial, our goal has always been to provide financial advice in a language you can understand. We’re starting off the year by crunching some numbers and having a friendly debate about median vs. mean…

Before we begin, we’re going to have a quick math lesson: to find out your net-worth, add up your assets (bank accounts, investment accounts, retirement accounts, house, car, and anything else of value that can be liquidated) and then subtract any liabilities (debt, loans against your car or house, credit card debt, student loan debt, etc.). Now back to our point – if you have 10 people and 9 of them make $90,000/annually and 1 person makes $10,000/annually, what is the mean? You’d add up each of their incomes and then divide by the number of people, which in this case would be $82,000/annually. The median, however, would be calculated by lining up those same 10 people, pushing half to one side, half to the other, and what remains in the middle in the median. If the number of data points is even, the median number is the average of the two middle data points in the list. In this case, that would be $90,000. Are you still following? Now let’s apply this same math to the overall median household net-worth which is about $192,000. That’s up from three years ago when this same study was performed and the median net-worth was $121,000. That is an enormous increase of 50%!

Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion debate median vs. mean and discuss why there’s been such a large increase in the overall median household net-worth in a language you can understand.

With the market being up, we’ll end 2023 on a very positive note, which is great considering what a volatile year it’s been. Morningstar, which is an independent rating service with a heavy focus on mutual funds, put out a story on the type of advice financial advisors are giving to clients as they’re approaching retirement. Once the paychecks stop rolling in, your spending habits generally change to adjust to your new monthly income.

Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion answer the three questions posed in the recent Morningstar piece about how they help clients as they near retirement in a language you can understand.

Thanks for joining Marc and Marion for the second to last episode of Dollars & Sense in 2023! Christmas shopping is done and we’re ready to enjoy the quality time with our families. Christmas, family, chocolates, and gifts all put smiles on our faces, but that’s not the only thing making us smile right now…

With 2023 coming to an end, we’re ending on a very positive note. The last 7 or so weeks we’ve seen positive performance. Who would have thought that the NASDAQ would end up almost 40% at this point. Since the end of October, the S&P 500 is up about 16% - in less than two months! An interesting statistic shared by Mass Financial Services in Boston was the seven tech stocks (Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, and Tesla), also referred to as the “Magnificent Seven” hit record highs this past month. What’s interesting is that those stocks are on average up 105% as of December 18, 2023. But, in 2022, the average of these stocks was DOWN 46%. See how quickly things change in a year? This is a prime example as to why we don’t chase the wild volatility and why a diversified portfolio is important.

Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion discuss the stock market and ending the year on a bright note in a language you can understand.

Marc and Marion are together again for this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense and to wrap up the last few weeks of 2023. Kind of crazy, isn’t it? Every year in December we find ourselves saying the same thing, “the year has just blown by.” Some things never change!

You know what else is for certain? We get older every year. It’s one of those things people don’t want to plan for but it’s a reality of life. Each week when we do these podcasts, we try to put together a topic that would be of interest to our listeners. A few times this year we’ve referenced the book The Psychology of Money written by award-winning author Morgan Housel. Morgan also just published a new book, titled, Same as Ever: A Guide to What Never Changes. When you start thinking about your future, it’s filled with hopes, wants, dreams, and expectations. Well, experts tell us, whether it’s those life things or whether it’s projections about the stock market or economics, generally only 25% of those projections come to fruition. That means your surprised 75% of the time. I don’t know about you, but we don’t like surprises!

You’re in for a treat as Marion and Christian are hosting this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense. As our loyal listeners know, Christian is our Director of Financial Planning so we want to take full advantage of having him as a guest speaker.

So, what’s going on with people as they approach retirement and enter retirement? It’s pretty cliché to say, but it’s the biggest change that will happen in your life. BUT it really is the biggest change - particularlyfrom a money perspective. As you creep closer to retirement age, you get excited to finally have the chance to pull the trigger, retire, and live a carefree retirement the way you envisioned it. But what happens when the paychecks stop all of a sudden?

Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marion and Christian discuss making the mental switch when you’re retiring in a language you can understand.

Welcome back to another episode of Dollars & Sense with your hosts Marc and Christian. We’re heading into the first week of December with Christmas, Hanukkah, and all festive holidays upon us this month. With holiday shopping in full swing, we can tell you that Marc knows all the Amazon, FedEx, USPS, and UPS drivers by first name now! We’re all feeling holly jolly and wanted to share our advice on whether you should pay for holiday gifts with cash or credit cards.

The days of shopping with cash seem to be a thing of the past. We’ve found it to be one of the more dangerous ways to shop now. Why is that? Well, one of the biggest reasons is you can lose your cash and the likelihood of recovering it before someone else finds it is slim to none…

Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Christian discuss smart ways to pay for holiday gifts in a language you can understand.

Thanks for tuning it to our special Thanksgiving episode of Dollars & Sense with Marc and Marion. Every week we have a great time hosting the show to provide our listeners with financial advice in a language you can understand. Today’s topic is going to be a bit different – we’re not going to be talking about dollars, stocks, bonds and all other types of monetary items. Today, we’re talking about things! Things? Yes, things!

We’ve all collected stuff over the years and we bet there’s some clutter in your home because of it. As you get older, you may find the need to downsize – so what do you do with all your stuff? More importantly, do YOU do anything with your stuff or wait until your kids need to figure out what to do with it one day? That brings us to a thought-provoking question. Do your children view your sentimental heirlooms the same way you do?

Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion discuss what has happened to the notion of sentimental value and some topics you can talk about at Thanksgiving dinner for some good laughs in a language you can understand.

Welcome back to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense. If you’ve been following what’s been going on in the world, and certainly from an economic standpoint, you may be excited over what the markets done over the past week. Marc was on vacation the first week of November when the markets started doing really well, so maybe we’ll keep him out of the office for good luck! ;)

We just got back from the Baron’s Conference in NYC where we were among 5,000 other financial professionals, clients, and shareholders who learned valuable information from fund managers and CEOs. Ron Baron shared his 30 year perspective on inflation and how different items have been affected by it. There were a few huge takeaways from the conference, but we have to say, the entertainment was probably the best part. Our main stage surprise entertainment was Justin Timberlake!

If you’re ready to get serious about your financial future, please don’t hesitate to contact our office to see how we can assist you. Our team at Freedman Financial focuses on financial planning and what you can control. We build strategies for the long-term, not just to last through the next few years.

Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion discuss the impact of inflation and why investing makes sense in a language you can understand.

Marion and Marc are together again to host this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense. It’s the same old song and dance when it comes to market volatility. We find it interesting that the word volatile refers to the markets going down AND up, but you usually only hear the word if the markets are down. If you look at the performance of the major Indexes of the year, they’re actually up.

At Freedman Financial, when we buy stocks for our clients, we buy them for the long-run. It’s important to not focus on the year-to-year volatility or market movement. We look at a 5-10 year horizon, and over that time period, it’s typical that stocks outperform bonds and cash. When we build portfolios for our clients, we use exchange traded funds (low cost professionally managed funds), actively managed mutual funds, index funds, and actively managed bond funds as well. We don’t pick individual securities. So what do we mean by that? When a client comes to us and says, “I want to buy Tesla, Apple, or Disney”, we tell them they already own it because they are a part of a large growth stock index or a large growth mutual fund that’s actively managed. If this topic has sparked any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our office to see how we can assist you.

While Marion Gilman, CFP® is off enjoying the beautiful Mediterranean weather, we’re excited to have our Director of Financial Planning, Christian Karcher, CFP® join us for this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense. We usually talk about financial advice in a language you can understand, but we’re going to talk about an interesting topic that was brought up over the weekend while Marc was hanging out with his family and friends. Have you ever heard of girl math?

If you’re part of the younger generation, you may have heard about girl math online. It’s a series of rules that people have developed to justify some money spending and decisions. Do you buy coffee out a lot? If you do, here’s an example for you: If you’ve already preloaded your Starbucks app/card with $10, grab a coffee at the drive-thru and leave, that’s free coffee. Well, in your mind it’s free since your card was already loaded with the $10 and you didn’t need to deduct any money from your bank account. Interesting outlook, right?

We’re back again with another episode of Dollars & Sense, where we try to provide some financial advice in a language you can understand. We’re in the middle of October, Christmas trees are out in the stores (WHAT?!), and Halloween decorations are up. Today we’re going to have a little bit of fun and talk about some scenarios and situations that we’ve run into here in our office, some conversations we’ve heard on the street, and stuff we’ve seen on TV and in social media.

A great orator has a way of getting in front of a crowd and influencing people to make a decision despite the fact that it makes no sense whatsoever, but because they’re so compelling in the way they present it, they easily build a large following. Kim Kardashian is a prime example here! What influences people to make decisions just really blows us away.

Fall is setting in, there’s a chill in the air, and the leaves are changing colors here in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, our focus has been on the horrific terrorist attacks going on in Israel. As Israel has stated, this is their September 11th. If you think about the size of the population of Israel compared to the U.S.A., it’s almost six to ten times worse than the number of deaths and destruction that they’ve had in a single day. We have absolute full confidence in the power of Israel and the support of the American Government along with other government entities to hopefully wipe out terrorism in the Middle East. Our hearts are with every single person affected by this act of terrorism.

One of the questions people continue to ask us about with the war in Israel and Gaza, the challenges with the economy, and what’s going on with Ukraine, is how does that impact the state of the economy? One of the things we review frequently with our clients is what has happened over the past year. We also look at the bigger picture by looking back three years, five years, ten years, etc., to show the value of long-term investing. We’re happy to report that over the past year we have seen positive returns after a terrible 2022.

Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion discuss how the war in Israel and current events could affect the economy and stock market in a language you can understand.

The Topsfield Fair is in full swing and all of us at the Bnai Brith Booth hosted the 5th Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest! Contestants had 7 minutes to consume ¼ lb. Hebrew National All-Beef Hot Dogs (including the bun). The winner ate 11 hot dogs, which is pretty wild, and we all celebrated another successful year!

The leaves are changing, but that’s not the only thing changing – so are the markets. September was a tough month and for those still waiting to receive their statements, our advice is not to even look at it. This is why we can’t stress enough the importance of staying the course. If there’s money you’ll need to use in a year or two, the stock market is probably not the place for your money. If you’re looking for a low-risk option, check out money market funds.

Here we go again. Perhaps one of the reasons the market is acting so unfavorably over the past week or two is because the government has the potential to shut down on October 1st. Déjà Vu all over again. As a matter of fact, Marion was just reading statistics from an article that stated we’ve apparently had 21 government shutdowns since 1976. You’d think with that many shutdowns that our country would be no more, right? That’s not exactly how it works, let us explain…

A recent eye-opening report in the Wall Street Journal talked about how ill-prepared people are for retirement. When are often asked, “What do you hope to get as a rate of return on your investments over time?” The goal is 6-8%. However, the likelihood of 6-8% in one year is slim to none. Investing is for the long term! The longer you are in the market, the better chance you will have a higher rate of return.

Don’t let negative headlines or soundbites drive your financial decisions. Sadly, pessimism drives action more than optimism. The goal of these scare tactics is to get a reaction, so think before you act!

When you were told to complete your homework as a child, you probably moaned and groaned. If you partner with our team, there’s one homework assignment that must be completed each year – scheduling your annual financial review. We promise you’ll thank us later!

At Freedman Financial, the very last action item on your financial plan is to review your plan on an annual basis. Why is this important? All of the relationships with our clients start off by completing a financial plan. During this comprehensive process we try to emphasize that it is an ongoing process and not a “one and done”. So much changes in your life over the course of 1, 5, 10, 20+ years and your financial plan should reflect that.

If you’re in need of a financial review or are interested in a second opinion, contact our team today.

We pride ourselves on not only paying attention to the financial aspect of your life but to look at your life holistically. Marion recently heard the saying “live by design, not by default.” Isn’t that the ultimate goal? What life do you want to create and what do you want to do in your life? We think it’s pretty important to keep that in mind not only in retirement age but also along the way.

By default, we are conditioned to join the workforce after completing school, find a partner, own a house, have children, and save, save, save. When you get into your sixties and have lived this lifestyle for 30-40 years, you may find it hard to transition into a lifestyle of relaxation, enjoyment, and living by design as to what you want to do.

Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion give a special shout-out to Marc’s son, Jerry, and talk about living by design and not be default in a language you can understand.

We just back from attending the LPL Financial Focus conference in beautiful San Diego. We had a great time networking and hearing about the latest products, tools, and ideas for us to implement.

During the conference, LPL President & CEO, Dan Arnold, made a thought-provoking statement. He said, “Ideas are interesting but execution is everything.” This got us thinking about some of the conversations we have with our own clients. A lot of clients come to our office with all of these ideas that they want to do. Then before they know it, decades pass by and they forget about fulfilling these ideas, dreams, and goals that they had – simply because they didn’t know how to execute. If this resonates with you in the slightest, don’t let time continue passing by. Our doors are always open and we’re happy to discuss financial strategies that are right for you so you can continue pursuing your dreams and goals. Contact our team today.

It’s amazing how many times we run into people who say the old adage, “well this time it’s different.” Whether they’re talking about the markets, the weather, how people prepare food, and everything else in between. You know what? It’s never different. We go through these hills and valleys and everything always works itself out. Inflation is the perfect example. In June of 2022, inflation was at 9% and a year later it’s at 3%...

People would love to have a guaranteed income stream in retirement. Now don’t get us wrong, we think having a guaranteed income stream is a wonderful thing to have as part of your overall income strategy, but you need to have other resources that are flexible enough to help you keep pace with inflation and available in case of emergencies. If you don’t currently have a plan in place, our doors are always open and we’re happy to discuss financial strategies that are right for you. Contact our team today.

Marc and Marion didn’t have a set agenda for this week’s podcast – until yesterday. It’s hard to believe that we’ve been sharing our thoughts and advice on air for over 12 years now. You always hope your message reaches the people who get the most value out of it. Our day was made yesterday when Marc met with a client who shared he spends a lot of time listening to this podcast. He’s also listened to past radio shows, he joins us on our quarterly webinar (contact us to get a future invite: Contact Freedman Financial), and he said what he’s grown to really like about our firm is how consistent our messaging is despite the volatility in the markets.

With our 50 years of experience, we can truly say that we’ve “Been there…done that…” Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion chat about the importance of consistent messaging in a language you can understand.

It’s the middle of summer and we are feeling that heat and humidity! Here’s hoping the last half of summer is drier and more enjoyable.

Even though we saw a lot of turbulence last year, 2023 is turning out to be a pretty good year for the stock market. What helped turn the market around? A few big factors were the FED realized they were raising interest rates too fast and eased off, the unemployment rate is very low, and we avoided a recession that many thought we’d be in by now. We can’t say we didn’t warn you to turn the news off and to stop listening to the media’s scare tactics. ;)

We’re packing a one-two punch and busting myths about taxes in retirement. For those who have been working for years and socking money away in their 401(k), they’re now seeing significantly large balances in them. Back in the day, employees were given company-sponsored pensions and you were simply paid the pension when you left. The issue we’re seeing for 401(k) owners is that this large lump of money is taxable income and you need to know how to manage it so it lasts you for the rest of your life in a tax efficient way. You ever hear the expression that once you retire you’ll be in a lower tax bracket? Is that really the case?

Whether you’re a business owner or work for someone else, you can’t avoid taxes in retirement. What you can control is saving money now and working with a certified financial planner professional to help you plan for your retirement and beyond. Contact our team today at www.freedmanfinancial.com/contact-us.

One of the things that everyone likes to do, especially those who are approaching or in retirement, is to travel. The joy of having more flexibility, freedom, and the opportunity to embark on longer journeys is what retirees eagerly anticipate when planning their next adventure. After Covid derailed everyone's travel plans for a few years, people were anxious to see the world again. Some individuals even considered indulging in more luxurious trips as they had saved money by not traveling in 2020 and 2021. However, it's important to note that this form of mental accounting might lead to increased spending, as the money you thought you were saving was most likely allocated to other expenses.

Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion talk about travel tips for retirees in a language you can understand.

We hope everyone had an enjoyable 4th of July... minus all the rain.

On a brighter note (pun intended) we finished the first half of 2023 with the markets performing relatively well!

But as we all know, anyone who invests needs to be ready for the ups AND downs of the markets. That is why planning for the long-term is so important. At Freedman Financial, we have noticed a shift in a lot of our client's mindsets. They are becoming more and more thoughtful about envisioning what a successful retirement means to them.

Holistic lifestyle planning, instead of just focusing on investments, helps with this.

Imagine you had all the money you ever wanted… what would you do with it? Now imagine you have been told by your doctor you have 5-10 years to live… how would you spend your money then? Your answers to these questions would likely differ if you are 25 vs. 45.

Take the time this summer to have important conversations when it comes to money, we are also happy to lend an ear. Contact us today at www.freedmanfinancial.com/contact-us.

We’re excited to have Marion back from France and on this week’s podcast. We always try to provide financial advice in a language you can understand and one thing we’ve noticed is people are looking for ways to save money and trying to find where they can cut back. We noticed a lot of our own clients don’t even realize how much money they unnecessarily spend on assorted fees. We get it, it’s a challenge to look at every statement and look at where your money is going – but it pays to do it. Fees sneak up on you, especially since so many of us are signing up for subscription programs nowadays or signing up for a free trial and then forgetting to cancel.

The weather is warming up in Massachusetts, the Celtics are unfortunately out of the playoffs after Game 7, and die-hard Red Sox fans are rooting for some wins. We’re sure you’re just as happy as we are that the debt ceiling situation is no longer a concern. Not that we were concerned, but it seems that we’re coming closer to an agreement which means we can focus on what really matters – things that we can control in our own financial lives.

More and more people are saving up cash in the bank – why is that? Are they scared to invest? Christian feels it happens at a few points in people’s lives, such as getting a big promotion or when your kids leave the house and are (finally) self-sufficient.

Tick tock...the debt ceiling deadline (June 1st) is right around the corner. They like to keep us on pins and needles until the very last minute but analysts and those in the know feel they will resolve it. After all, Joe Biden and Kevin McCarthy will want a positive outcome so they have an opportunity to be re-elected.

We know the debt ceiling conversation keeps some people up at night. We don’t think it should, but we do understand that a lot of people worry about a lot of different things – especially things that are out of their control. Running out of money, family issues, and health are some of the things that keep our clients up at night. Kids will be heading off to college in the fall and the financial responsibility weighs heavy on many parents. The good news? You CAN control the outcome on a lot of these items by having conversations now and putting a plan into place that works for you and your family.

The debt ceiling conversation has been hot and heavy this week. The only thing different this time around is how close will we get to midnight the night of the deadline before they strike a deal. There's been an intensified use of sensationalism with the media. Folks, keep in mind that when you watch the news and scroll through your social media feeds that everybody now is in the entertainment business and not in the information and news business.

In a book that I wrote, Retiring for the Genius,I talk about finding an advisor that makes sense for you. Find an advisor who is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), who acts as a fiduciary by placing your best interest first, and who takes the times to understand what your entire financial life looks like and what your goals are.

Spring has finally arrived, the Celtics and the Bruins are doing great in the playoffs, and the curtains are about to open at North Shore Music Theatre! The stock market seems to have stabilized a little bit and isn’t quite as volatile as it was last year.

One of the big questions that we keep getting asked all the time is when is the right time to invest? Is this the right time, was it last year, is 2026 the right time, did we miss the right time? One of the most interesting things is looking back on the performance of our clients’ accounts over the last three, five, ten, fifteen, and even twenty years, and comparing the historical performance reports data. When you stretch it out over longer term horizons, the average number is falling right in the range that we had hoped for.

With tax season officially over (phew!), we wanted to shed some light on some of the most commonly asked tax questions we received this past week. We also dive into an uncomfortable topic that many families are faced with. A recent study by Bankrate.com came out this week that showed 68% of retirees have made a financial sacrifice to help their adult children with money. This is a reality for so many of our clients and listeners. Given the choice to cut back on your retirement lifestyle so that your children could have a better financial life, would you do it? Or do you feel that you should live your retirement to the fullest and whatever money is left over will go to your kids?

All the activity around the bank crisis has very much calmed down. The Treasury stepped in pretty quickly to help the banks that were failing and it seems as if people aren’t as worried today. If you think back and ask how come Silicon Valley Bank failed, their problem is they bought Treasury Bonds, which are fully guaranteed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.

Today we’re going to talk about something that may be the most deceiving perspective that anyone could offer to you right now, especially when it relates to market performance. If you ask someone walking on the street these days how their investment portfolio is doing right now, chances are there’s not a giant Cheshire Cat smile going across their face. However, if I were to tell you that some of the best annualized performance is coming from your three-year statement right now, you may not believe me.

Also, we discuss retirement account beneficiaries and why your spouse may not be the best candidate.

It’s no surprise that the media had played a part in the mass hysteria surrounding banks “supposedly failing” over the past few weeks. After the initial shock wore off, we began to see this was far more of a media event than it was an impact to your pocketbook event. The media had a field day with this.

Realistically, when you hear a bank fails, it doesn’t necessarily mean they ran out of money. It means that they don’t have the liquidity right now to hand you your cash.

Very rarely we get to say we have an exciting time in the world of finance, but last week we saw the failure of a bank… Silicon Valley Bank to be exact. Bank failures can feel scary to say the least, however, it is important to know the FDIC was designed for moments like this.

The FDIC guarantees deposits up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank. This means that if a bank fails, the FDIC will step in and ensure you get you money back (up to the insured limit that is.)

The Markets seem to be as unpredictable as the weather lately. That is why having a well-diversified portfolio that align with your long term goals is so important! Of course you should have some money in the bank for expenses that pop up, but the money you are not going to touch should probably be invested with a long-term strategy.

Because of Market trends, we are noticing in the office that many are being more cautious about spending or part of the money. However, if they are not, part of what they are spending is being used to support their children who are old enough to support themselves. This week on Dollars & Sense, we discuss the implications of supporting your adult children.

The Market is still trying to figure out how to catch its footing right now. Returns on portfolios in 2021 were enormous… but in 2022 you lost it all and then some.

But it is important to note that the U.S. is set for recovery. If you are being overly cautious and are opting to not participate in the market, this can be a big mistake, especially if you have time on your side.

During this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense, we discuss the FED, interest rates, money market funds, inflation, and more.

Remember- hope is not a strategy, you need a financial PLAN in place. If you are ready to get serious about planning, give us a call.

Tax season is in full swing! During this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense, Marc and Marion discuss why you should hold off on making an appointment with your tax professional until March, when you should file your taxes with a professional VS the DIY method, and why getting a large tax return isn’t necessarily a good thing.

We also touch on a hot topic — artificial intelligence (aka AI.)

Marc asked Chat GBT to explain the difference between financial planning VS investment advice. Find out what AI had to say about this… and how we, as Certified Financial Planning Professionals, feel about it's explanation. Are you ready to get started on your financial planning journey? Are you in need of a second opinion? We are here to help get your financial house in — contact us.

We are approaching Super Bowl Sunday this weekend! The Patriots may not be playing in the big game, but a former Patriots' player made big news this weekend. You guessed it – the one and only Tom Brady. He announced he is retiring again, but this time FOR GOOD.

This just goes to show people approach retirement in different ways, and today’s approach to retirement looks way different than it used to. Retirement is not always necessarily about the money (but of course, we know a big retirement concern is running out of money in retirement.)

We have noticed those with a positive cash flow have different concerns, including:

  • What am I going to do with the second half of my life?
  • What will I enjoy doing in retirement?
  • Will I be mentally challenged in retirement?’

At Freedman Financial, we can give you a sense of certainty of what you can and cannot do once you retire. Contact us if you are ready to get serious about your retirement.

For those of you who may not know, we have to do a certain amount of continuing education each year to maintain our professional financial designations.

This week, Marion attended a continuing education course on retirement planning- something we are EXTREMELY familiar with.

However, she did take away from the course a few interesting retirement-related statistics that opened our eyes to the general population in the U.S.

Did you know?:

  • 72% of Americans are concerned about running out of money in retirement
  • 57% are overwhelmed by having to determine how much they can spend in retirement
  • Only 48% of Americans have attempted to calculate how much money they spend
  • 60% are worried about not getting a regular paycheck in retirement

During this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense, we discuss how you can ease your retirement fears.

You’ve worked hard, saved, raised a family and did everything you’re supposed to do. Your retirement should be a time in your life that you look forward to, not worry about! If you are concerned about your retirement plan, please give us a call.

During this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense, Marc and Marion discuss what exactly is going up, and what is going down, when it comes to interest rates and some interesting factors included in the Secure 2.0 Act (including new rules around RMDs.)

We are approaching the end of what many would see as a "cruddy year" for the markets. But we have some good news — consumer confidence is at the highest it has been all year!

What this tells us is that consumers are not overly worried about a deep, prolonged recession. The media can instill unnecessary fear. Do not fall victim to scary headlines, soundbites, and clickbait!

With January right around the corner, maybe now is a good time to get a second opinion... 'in a language you can understand!'

Wishing everyone happy holidays and new year!

BROADCAST: Dollars & Sense, 06/12/2022

Episode Summary: During this episode of Dollars & Sense, Marc discusses who the REAL culprits are to blame for this new economic paradigm shift in America. You may be surprised by his thoughts.

SEGMENT 1: (1:54) For experienced investors, the fact that the market is down should not be shocking. However, new investors have not experienced the ups AND DOWNS of the market yet. It is important to remember investing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Neither life nor the markets move in only one direction.

SEGMENT 2: (16:12) Perhaps the reason we are all a little more down lately is because we place blame and focus on what we cannot control. We have created an environment for younger generations that is our own doing. For example, have you taught your kids how to “adult”? Until we change, we create the problem. Pointing the blame to someone else needs to be tossed out the window.

SEGMENT 3: (31:03) What is the most important piece of your financial puzzle? Is it the corner? The middle? The edges? ...it is actually the cover of the box. How can you put your life together when you do not have a big picture of that should look like?

SEGMENT 4: (43:49) We need to do a better job at preparing for our financial future. We cannot continue to step in for our children who overspend. What is it that YOU want to do in retirement? Make the most out of your life and start celebrating you!
