Note: This recording was originally recorded over Thanksgiving during a year before I was married so some references (e.g. to the great single life) no longer apply.

"Tis the season for focusing on gratitude.  You may be grateful for your kids, your parents, your job.  But how often are you grateful for the inconveniences, the bad relationships, the unwelcome events that seem to make your life miserable?

Often we assume that if we could just change our external circumstances, things will be better. If we move to a new home, if we get that new car or that new job, if we change out that spouse, surely we will be happier - right?

Not so fast. In this drive-time audio I share my own  learnings through a two-month trip to London, my transformational expectations, and what really happened when I got there.

Many of use carry tension in our muscles without even realizing it. This is a great exercise I learned from a yogi years ago. Tens of thousands of people have used it over the decades, and while I haven't studied their results, I have personally found it effective at identifying tension points in the body, reducing stress and anxiety.

Do the exercise 3 times at the start of your mindful mediation each day for the next 30 days and let me know how it goes. You can also post your thoughts on the Mindful Momentum Facebook page, Instagram or Twitter.

Special Guest: Monique Burt,

You supported your boss in hiring the coworker you had a chance to interview, but he’s turned out to be a complete disaster – doesn’t understand the job, constantly asks you to do his work while taking full credit. Your boss thinks your coworker is great but he doesn’t see what’s really going on. You have a sense of foreboding about that daycare provider or nanny watching your child and now you’re hunting for a hidden camera to see what’s happening when you’re not there. Things have started to disappear around your home since you hired that handyman. Where did you go wrong?

Join my guest, Monique Burt for some surprising answers.  Monique manages strategic development throughout the Midwest for the law division of Kelly Services' Outsourcing & Consulting Group. My amazing guest, Ron, talks about the challenges of parenting, the sacrifices, the difficult choice to become a stay at home dad, and the amazing blessings and benefits of his choice to be a dad down through the generations of his family.

The book takes an unflinching look at Nigerian culture.  Kirkus Reviews say this: “It’s refreshing to see even a fictional story of an African-American woman’s experience in Africa; many of Garnett’s Brooklyn friends romanticize the continent as the motherland, but she discovers that it brings her none of the comforts of home.” A wealthy banker husband, servants, nice cars, what could go wrong?

First, let’s admit it; most of us talk to God. Especially now that the holidays are coming.  Does this sound familiar? God I hope this turkey turns out okay. Oh, God, why is Uncle Louie coming to the dinner party?  He gets drunk every year and scares the children. Lord help me get through this weekend. Dear God, if you just get me through this, I’ll… and then the promises roll out.  Yes, we talk to God alright.  But most times, we do it unconsciously, we don’t really think God is listening, we don’t believe God answers prayer, we don’t expect an answer, and we’re not thinking that we’ll engage in an actual dialogue.  Pick up some tips on how to turn this mindless yammering into real conversation that gets you answers.

It’s Thanksgiving season in the US and Canada, and a time many people reflect on what they are grateful for.  We are talking about gratitude – the concept of being thankful, seeing the silver lining in every cloud even when there seems to be nothing by gray in the sky, paying attention to the simple pleasures in your daily life appreciating the good things that you have and experience. A study by Dr. Robert Emmons on gratitude found that thankfulness can increase a person’s level of happiness by about 25%.  Also, grateful people tend to recover faster from adversity, they have stronger immune systems, they exercise more regularly, and they have more fulfilling personal relationships. Once upon a time society suggested that you should wait until you get married to have sex.  That was once upon a time.  Now, society says it’s okay to have sex whenever the feeling moves you, whether it’s on a first date or just “hooking up,” with no commitment or expectation of any ongoing relationship. But is this good for us?  Is it healthy for men or women?  Is there value in waiting to get married to have sex?  With an increase in single households, what if you never get married?  Does this question matter if you are in your 40’s the way it might have mattered when you were 18?  Why should we wait for sex anymore? We explore these and other provocative questions with returning guest, author, public speaker, and life coach, Sheila Ford.
