Why do some of us not trust ourselves when it comes to eating? We want independence, but sometimes it feels threatening. In my experience, it comes down to two things - autonomy and intention. We all want the ability to choose and to do so deliberately with care.
But why do we sabotage ourselves so often? Let's explore reasons why you might find you're not as ready for independence as you think.

We know the harm of food-restrictive diets, but what about things that diets restrict us from doing? How does not nourishing ourselves restrict our daily lives? How does a poor relationship with food restrict us from social lives? Or how does the weighing scale restrict us from a positive body image? Diets restrict us from self-reflection, wisdom, nourishment and confidence. Sometimes, changing your perspective is a matter of changing your definition.

Maintenance doesn't "feel" like a goal but it's a vital one to learn nonetheless. A calorie deficit won't fix your bad patterns. It will magnify them further. This episode explores two main reasons why people find it so hard to thrive. Maintenance is life. It's where we should spend most of our lives. Paul discusses a question he received on Ester weekend - "How do I not press the f**k it button this Easter?"
Waiting until Easter Sunday to ask this is like asking how to learn to swim today. You can receive cliches that help you stay afloat - mindful eating, don't restrict - but the fear of drowning remains. The risk is asking this same question every occasion for the rest of your life.
This episode is about healing your relationship with food and some ideas on how to do it.

Patterns of behaviour that once spared us embarrassment, shame or judgment might now be the source of our pain as adults.
Secret eating once got us through a tough period and now it's the only way we cope.
Intense restrcition offered us control and now it's the reason we overeat.
We can ask ourselves "In what circumstance did this peculiar behaviour once make sense?"
Then, gently, we can begin to coax ourselves towards better solutions here and now.
Most people rely on inner conflict to make eating choices. We want to shift organically into calm, controlled, self-assured decisions.
So, let's talk about the audit. A behavioural audit. A period where the focus isn't as much on strict change as it is observation.
What has worked? What hasn't? Who do you want to be on the journey? What is and isn't worth it? How do you develop confidence, self-awareness and control around eating?

In this episode, Paul goes through his history of binge eating - how it started, how he broke it and how he stayed out of it. Binge eating was, in part, because of an overvaluation of body shape which ironically made things worse and worse.
Paul stopped dieting for a prolonged period, stopped focusing on being lean, practised unconditional permission to eat until it felt "normal", and then dieted again years later with the principles he now teaches his clients, getting some of the best results in the industry.
This episode might be the nudge you need to seek the appropriate help from a qualified professional.

I recently spoke on a finance podcast and was asked where I got my investing knowledge. I don't have much. I have a huge interest in human behaviours and predictable tried and true patterns. Skills rely more on behaviours than they do information.
In this episode, I talk about the main skills that are important when it comes to losing weight and keeping it all for life - skills that will probably be as true in 100 years as they are today. A calorie deficit seldom works when there is a deficit of eating skills.
Last week I told a client that it's impossible to lose weight and never feel hungry.
So I decided to share a smattering of ideas I've found important and impactful. I've expanded on them a little - using examples in some cases - but the goal is to make them into memorable bite-sized nuggets to keep with you always

Your personal values are the driver of your nutrition decisions. They help you make the right decision for the right context. Diet conditioning reduces foods to weight loss only. "Good" and "bad". Values help you make autonomous decisions confidently. You will never not love the things you love. The main difference between "good" and "bad" is not the food itself, but whether decisions are made mindfully or mindlessly. If you're looking to break up with dieting, values are a seriously good place to start.

In today's podcast Paul speaks about a moment with one of his clients when they showed him a picture of how they had looked two years prior.
“I’d love to look like this again,” they said — those words accompanying a photo of a gaunt, malnourished, rather anxious-looking person. At least, this was his suspicion.
Our minds have a tendency to pull a specific situation from the past and gloss over it in a way that blinds us to the surrounding context that made it mundane, unpleasant or even unbearable.

It features a few core ideas like .. * Getting to a place that you never percieve yourself to fail the diet cycle irrespective of the decision being made. * Getting to a place wherby you never feel you 'break your diet' and are never on or off the diet. * Getting to a place where sustainability is a mindset and your today eating approach isn't your forever approach. * Stepping into a new chapter of life with the same underpinning philosophies around your * Diet and dieting decisions become a reflection of what is important to you as you evolve through life.

One trap we can fall into is the "All or Nothing, Black VS White" mindset.
With weight-management, this can manifest itself as "On the diet/Off the diet"
Awareness is the first step to not fall into this trap.
My favourite topic-- life.
Today I chat to Kevin Russell, co-host of the BeHuman Podcast about what it means to be human. We talk about depression, anxiety, personal struggle, imposter syndrome, gratitude, fitness and how hard times lead to good times.

My online client Damien has lost 5 stone since July. In this episodes he talks about masculinity, vulnerability, how to enjoy the process, happiness and long-term success. This episode is an amazing summary of the process of uncovering and discarding new parts of oneself.
It's every trainers nightmare to not follow through with the result for their client. My ex-client Shane shares his story as to why we could not get to the goal together. He has since gone on to lose 30kg afterwards.
I have given bad advice in the past-- from a place of love. That doesn't justify it. I've taken the lesson. Loosen the hold on our attachments. Don't just jump from extreme to extreme.
Recently my client Lisa had her 70lb progress photo stolen to falsely promote the Keto-diet. The theft was one thing, but under-mining behaviour change and hard work to exploit the insecurities of many is another. Let me share this story with you.
Client Steve (Steves_weight_loss) returns to discuss how getting rid of the Fuck-it button (Fuck-it mindset) can be a life-changing experience
An amazing story involving hitting rock bottom and a journey to get mentally and physically healthier and drop 50 lbs in the process
My own personal growth comes in no small part from talking to my clients as humans. In no particular order, here are 6 client conversations that impacted my coaching philosophy
How my client Jean lost 50 pounds by breaking away from rigid food rules and yo-yo dieting
Suicide, being a young mum, an incredible fat-loss journey and starting her own coaching service
We all hear terms like "metabolism", "clean eating" and "processed food", but do we actually understand these terms?
If not, how can we make decisions with them at the forefront of our mind?
In this episode I highlight real examples of the disconnect between a healthy lifestyle versus an all-consuming "fitness" lifestyle
In this episode myself and Steve (good friend and old client) chat about the difference between holding on to other peoples words in a beneficial way versus letting them slide off like water off a ducks back
We often see the "after", but what about that messy phase in the middle where all the character is made? Grainne reflects on her progress to date-- half way to the goal she set herself earlier this year
A "Before and After" picture is amazing, yet tells but a fraction of the story. Here is Lisa's account of losing 60 pounds with a simple, sustainable approach
Let me share an idea from a book with you about the spectrum of learning, in this case about dieting, in a way perhaps you've never heard before
We assume more calories leads to more body-fat, but what about when it doesn't? I just want you to use this example to form your own opinion. Nuance matters. Context matters. There are no real answers, just better guidelines, for you, right now.
Principles are universal truths. Methods are the particular form of procedure we use to arrive at a principle This really matters in the realm of "dieting"
My client Gill shares her story about improving outlook on food. She shares how she didn't want her twenties to be wasted in negative diet cycles, and the difficulties she has faced along the way. Thought-provoking piece from an intelligent lady
In this episode I reply to a DM from a follower who messages looking for advice on what to do when large packets of sweets are open regularly and willpower seems weak.
I believe this is a skill and mindset more than a "willpower" issue.
Some of the worst mistakes I see from this one trainers point of view
Focusing on the little details and neglecting those that matter
Black vs white/ good vs bad thinking
Too many changes at once
Mismanagement of the scale
7 great lessons from my 100 episodes to date.
They include not being in such a rush, hedonic adaptation amongst others
A personal account of how certain ideas have helped improve my relationship with food
I began using principles, not methods
I stopped seeing food as good or bad
I stopped using dieting as self-flagellation
I realised food will always be there
I changed the lingo I used
I knew if you were never on a plan, you can never be off a plan
I asked better questions
I began to critically evaluate information I was offered
I stopped idolising physiques
I stopped being afraid of a little fat gain
Steve is back to chat about the recent fat-shaming stories in the media and his own personal experiences as well as dealing with it, how losing 110 pounds has changed his life exactly one year on and the mindset shifts that finally worked
As I grow and mature, these may change and/or be developed upon
Here are 8 ideas I wish to share
Make decisions from love, abundance and curiosity and not fear/hate
Use other people's ideas to expand on and challenge your own but don't follow blindly.
Critically think. The burden of proof is on the person offering you unsolicited advice.
Learn rather than wish for.
Understand whether desire would enhance your life or whether it's just another way to remain unhappy
Self-educate
Define a clear set of core values for yourself
Seek happiness always, even if you think you cannot find it.
I'm joined by Orlaith this week who shares some very open, honest and unique views on dealing with negative body-image.
There's a tonne of value in this episode.
What can I say?
100 pounds of weight loss, taking complete ownership, the worst moments of her life and her infectious moments of triumph (as can be seen on her IG), CBT, her appearance on the Late Late show. We go over absolutely everything about this lady's remarkable progress
In this episode I share two conflicting strategies I use to ensure I'm chasing my own personal happiness.
They involves setting targets, to-do list and a morning routine. I may be late to the party here, but I think there is some gold in this
I recently received a DM from a follower asking for a little advice on how to get out of day-to-day thinking and chaos and deviate towards more structure, order and long-term thinking.
A little bit different with this episode.
Too many people at mindlessly and then diet mindlessly-- both a recipe for no success
Here are 5 necessary diet truths
You're going to have to think/act different this time
You influence those around you more than you realise
You need to own your decisions and accept them. No one else is at fault
Your knowledge and mindset is only as useful today as it is in ten years
You probably haven't tried everything
What will the next one do that the previous one didn't satisfy?
Do you really need a new diet or are you making the same mistake every single weekend?
Pushing the Fuck It button is what hurts people more than anything in my experience
My online client shares his story about the way in which he is going to lose a remarkable 200 pounds.
He talks about the reason he started, the reason he will be successful, the change in mindset and the frustrations as well as wins along the way.
He has lost approx 100 pounds to date, and he's coming for the next 100
1.00 What Personal Trainer cert do you recommend to do or does it even matter?
4.20 What data do you collect from clients on check-in day as an online Personal Trainer
15.16 I find your "Fuck It" button concept very useful. What advice would you have for someone very active to go to the next level if that makes sense?
21.02 I would love to be an online coach because I want to travel. How would you go about getting straight into online training as opposed to on-the-gym-floor training?
30.00 What advice do you feel is most important for maintaining a healthy and loving relationship?
Very quick episode in which I share my thoughts on the difference between wanting to "be right" from a place of ego versus actually being eager to help people and be happy to accept truth, even if it proves your current viewpoints to be incorrect.
Whether you are a trainer or have one, I believe this is something to be on the lookout for. The main difference between people who strive to help others versus people who need to come across as the smartest is ego
Fitness and health can become incredibly disempowering based on what you follow. You can spend years trying to develop a certain mindset and lose it quickly based off who you follow. Take just ten minutes to listen to this today and see where you stand
In this episode I talk about a number of things including how the only way to "lose" is to become attached, accepting wisdom that conlflicts with your current beliefs, the good and the bad with intuitive eating and why challenging advice you are given is an absolute must
In this episode In talk about how fat loss when done sustainably is usually quite unspectacular. Many of our decisions come from pure emotion and insecurity from a place of sensationalism or exaggeration.

In this episode I talk about my mission which is very simple. I want to help people see food differently, remove the fear, remove the "on" vs "off" & "good" vs "bad" food and diet mentality. I also want people to realise that fitness doesn't end so there is no outcome, so if you hate the process you will hate fitness forever. In my opinion you cannot hate yourself to any destination worth arriving at.

A follow up of #74 don't push the fuck it button 1..In this episode I discuss how I feel the 'fuck it' mentality keeps people heavier than they would like to be, never actually being present in decision making, being regretful towards food, fearing and being anxious of events like Christmas and ultimately getting further and further away form the lean person mentality that ironically they think they are chasing.

It is my personal belief that most people struggle with actually enjoying certain foods without feeling guilt than they do knowledge. Rather than condescending people with generic advice have a listen as to why it's more practical to simply not push the fuck it button. Something many people do repeatedly year after and weekends on end.

This is an anecdotal story I had the other night about enjoying a treat, stopping when full and actually listening to your body. A lot of the reason that people never see the shape they want is nothing to do with knowledge and is everything to do with this very mindset.

Self-consciousness and insecurity often stop us from taking the first step in any journey, unaware taking the first step is the variable of starting to deal with them. We all have them. Don't worry about them. Know your strengths because there may not be many. But own your insecurities, or else let them dominate you forever.

My points include...
2.Everything is a projection, happiness or misery etc.

However from what you'll hear in our conversations he is so much more than these labels. He is a truly intelligent and interesting man. Eugene and I go into many areas of health and wellness.
