Welcome to the first ever episode of A Moment with The Summer Storyteller. It took a pandemic and lockdown for this podcast to see the light of day. Ne’er mind! I’m just happy to be sharing a love of words at such a crucial time. In this episode, some lockdown thoughts and in our very first All Write Now segment, How to write: A SELFIE CINQUAIN — Cinquains are neat, five-line poems that play around with the parts of speech. They make a great grammar lesson and creative writing session for children, are useful for brainstorming and mapping projects and ideas, they’re like a mini mental workout for writers—they get the creative juices flowing, and done right, they make for great poems. HAVE A GO!!! HERE’S HOW: Grab pen & paper and start thinking about words and phrases that best describe YOU. Write down several and choose the ones that work best. LINE 1: ONE NOUN (in this case —- your first name!); LINE 2: TWO ADJECTIVES to describe yourself (for a further challenge, extend those adjectives into similes, e.g., tall as... small like...); LINE 3: THREE VERBS or action words ending in “-ing” to describe yourself; LINE 4: ONE clever, thoughtful or funny SENTENCE that sums up who or what you are; LINE 5: ONE SYNONYM for the noun on Line 1 — in other words, a word (two at a push) that also describes or sums you up. Have fun seeing what witty word play, rhymes and rhythms emerge. Send the results to me at https://anchor.fm/linda-deane/message or summerstoryteller1@gmail.com. And you don’t have to write about yourself, you can write a cinquain about ANYTHING! Even about lockdown. Even if you can’t go outside, you can still let your imagination loose! Happy writing, stay safe — The Summer Storyteller
