Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has empowered the Justice Department's special counsel to investigate allegations that President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman colluded with the Russian government.
That detail is revealed in a court document filed late Monday by special counsel Robert Mueller defending the scope of his investigation.
Paul Manafort, who led the Trump campaign for parts of 2016, has challenged Mueller's authority and asked a judge to dismiss an indictment against him.
But in its court filing, Mueller disclosed a memo from last August in which Rosenstein specified allegations that were within the scope of his investigation.
Among those is an allegation that Manafort colluded with Russian government officials to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
None of the charges Manafort currently faces alleges coordination with the Kremlin.
Thousands of Oklahoma teachers are expected to descend on the state Capitol to demand lawmakers approve more funding for education just days after the Legislature did just that.
Gov. Mary Fallin signed legislation last week increasing taxes on cigarettes, fuel and oil and gas production to provide teachers with raises of about $6,100, or 15 to 18 percent. The Oklahoma walkout Monday was inspired by West Virginia teachers who won a 5 percent raise after going on strike. Arizona teachers are now considering a strike over their demands for a 20 percent salary increase.
Many Oklahoma schools, including the three largest districts of Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Edmond, are closed Monday. Rally organizers say it isn't clear how long the walkout will last.
President Donald Trump says the Second Amendment will not be repealed.
The president is making that pledge a day after retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens expressed a different view. Stevens wrote in The New York Times that repealing the Second Amendment would help Congress enact gun control measures.
"THE SECOND AMENDMENT WILL NEVER BE REPEALED!" Trump tweeted early Wednesday. "As much as Democrats would like to see this happen, and despite the words yesterday of former Supreme Court Justice Stevens, NO WAY. We need more Republicans in 2018 and must ALWAYS hold the Supreme Court!"

That's the strongest level of support since The Associated Press first asked the question five years ago. The new poll also found that nearly half of Americans do not expect elected officials to take action.
