In this episode Dawn dives into how our relationships with ourself and others develops. In the home environment for sure, but also when we enter and go through the educational system. In Claim Your Dream Life, Dawn explains how we have BIG DREAMS when we are children, believing we can be and do anything we want. Then we become conditioned over time to temper our dreams and be "realistic". By they time we reach adulthood, sadly just earning a steady paycheck is often our new “Dream”.

What can we do? Dawn believes the answer lies in revamping the current system as our Industrial Era educational system’s one-size-fits-all approach often leaves students disconnected with each other, bored and disinterested in learning. There is good news.

A non-profit called Transcend is partnering with communities to LISTEN to young people and learn how we can reinvent learning and the educational system.

When she was in her mid-fifties, Diana Devi started feeling like she was fading, almost like she was becoming invisible. She wasn’t sleeping well, didn’t have any energy, was gaining weight and didn’t have the spring in her step OR a desire to do much of anything! She felt she looked older than she should and was worried that the rest of her life was going to be like that. Old, fat and wrinkled, no longer valued at work and stuck with unsatisfying personal relationships.

She went to her doctor, thinking there had to be something physically wrong with her. After a thorough exam she was told there was nothing wrong with her, she was just getting older! Shortly after, she encountered an 80 year old woman celebrating her birthday at a local restaurant. She was vibrant - laughing and having fun with her group so engaged and fully enjoying herself. Diana wanted to be that woman.

Diana wanted to live her own story on her own terms. She admired Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren, women who've aged in their industry – one that relies on looks and they have kept working on their terms … They have aged beautifully and not gotten old.

So with her 30+ years of medical experience as a pharmacist she read up on all the new and exciting innovations in the medical field. She studied holistic methods and believes in treating the body as naturally as possible . She applied what she learned and Got Her Sexy BACK. So many people noticed the changes they started asking her for help.

So she launched An Ageless Life to share her lessons and knowledge with women like her who are feeling old, have lost confidence and/or feel invisible. So they can get their Sexy Back!

In celebration of Labor Day, in the USA this episode is devoted to the workers of the world. Dawn shares information and data from the US, but the trend she discusses isn’t limited to that country. There's a good reason we see so much labor unrest, with union workers striking, non-union workers organizing and pretty much all workers falling behind economically.

Dawn examines the growth of CEO pay where compensation of the top CEOs has increased 1,322.2% from 1978 to 2020. Top CEO compensation grew roughly 60% faster than stock market growth during the same period and far exceeded the 18.0% growth in a typical worker’s pay. During the pandemic the dramatic increase in CEO compensation was obscene. While millions were out of work, CEOs’ pay shot up 18.9% in 1 year.

The CEO-to-worker compensation ratio was 21-to-1 in 1965. It peaked at 366-to-1 in 2000. In 2020 the ratio was 351-to-1. The makeup of CEO compensation is shifting away from stock options, to stock awards. Vested stock awards and exercised stock options totaled $20.1 million in 2020 and accounted for 83.1% of CEO pay.

Corporate boards running America’s largest public firms are giving top executives outsize compensation packages that have grown much faster than the stock market, typical workers salaries, college graduates, and even the top 0.1%. What can be done?

Listen and discover:

  1. How primates (including humans) are hard wired for fairness and what happens when it is removed in scientific experiments

  2. Why we should care about income and economic inequality and how it impacts society.

  3. Policy considerations to fix the corrupt CEO compensation system.

  4. What you can do at the individual level to make a difference and minimize the damage.

The old definition of Rich is having a great deal of money or assets, in a word: Wealthy. The NEW definition of RICH is the ability to do what you want, when you want, where you want, with whom you want, for as long as you want. With ENOUGH money to do so, in a word: FREEDOM. But as Dawn explains in this episode, freedom isn't free. The Law of Sacrifice means there is always an exchange involved. What is the cost of that freedom?

Listen and you'll learn:
1. The key element required to "buy" your Freedom.
2. What cost is involved and must be paid for a wide, open spacious calendar.
3. A key to getting off the living paycheck to paycheck treadmill.

For a good life, find your people and nurture strong relationships.

"In other words, make friends with individuals. The other side of the individualistic coin: Find your people."

I grew up in the United States and, like many Americans, I was taught that my country was the best in the world. I never questioned this belief until I went to college and studied anthropology. I learned about ethnocentrism, the belief that one's own culture is superior to all others.  After traveling around the world, I realized that Americans are some of the worst offenders when it comes to ethnocentrism.

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1) The Harvard Study of Adult Development, which has followed people from their teenage years into old age, has revealed insights about what makes up a life well-lived.
2) Dr. Robert Waldinger, MD, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard and the current head of the study, has learned which adults turn out happy and why.
3) The study has found that happy people avoid toxic tribalism, or the tendency to view members of other groups as inferior.

Do you want to know the secret to happiness and success? It may surprise you to know that emotional intelligence (EI) is key!

"Emotional intelligence is the ability to monitor one's own and other people's emotions, to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior."

In the Science of Happiness and in Volume Two, we're focusing on what we can do to improve our happiness as we relate to other human beings in community. For over eight decades, the Harvard Study of Adult Development has been tracking the same individuals and their families, asking thousands of questions and taking hundreds of measurements from brain scans to blood work, with the goal of discovering what really makes for a good life. Through all the years of studying these people, strong relationships have the biggest impact on physical health, mental health and longevity. In part seven, our big reveal is happy people nurture good relationships. Dr. Waldinger, who now runs the study, says that emotional intelligence and relationship acumen are bigger predictors of success than IQ.

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. What is emotional intelligence and how can it be learned?
2. How does emotional intelligence impact our ability to succeed in different areas of life?
3. What are some practical tips for improving emotional intelligence?

In this volume, Dr. Waldinger explains that emotional intelligence and relationship acumen are bigger predictors of success than IQ. Emotional intelligence helps us build stronger relationships, succeed at school or in the workplace, reduce stress, defuse conflicts and enhance satisfaction. Proficient social skills allow us to build meaningful relationships with others and develop a deeper understanding of ourselves. Some essential social skills are active listening, verbal and nonverbal communication, leadership and persuasiveness. Here are some tips on improving your social skills: ask open ended questions, use icebreakers, maintain good eye contact, express interest in others and ask them personal questions.

Does Worrying about What Other People Think Make Us Happy?

“When we asked, ‘What was your biggest regret?’ a lot of people said, ‘I wish I hadn’t spent so much time worrying about what other people think'" according to the Harvard Happiness Study.

Fear is a primal emotion and goes to the heart of our survival drive in the physical world. Our survival as humans, as a tribal species, is dependent upon our being accepted by the tribe. If we got rejected by the tribe, historically it literally could mean death due to lose of protection and shelter.

In the modern era, fear of societal rejection triggers our limbic or reptilian brain. Emotionally, from an evolutionary standpoint our limbic brain just can’t handle rejection!  Yet, to live our best life we need to let go and overcome this primal instinct - this fear of rejection really does not serve us very well in our modern world!

Does being self-absorbed make you happier?

"People are happiest when they make investments in things that are beyond themselves."

In the last four episodes of The Science of Happiness series (Volume 1), we focused on the science of happiness as it relates to creating purpose and deeper meaning in life. Volume 2 focuses on our fourth quarter theme of Community and Cultural Adaptation.

The Harvard Study of Adult Development, which launched in 1938, is the longest scientific study of happiness ever conducted. It found that people are happiest when they make investments in things that are beyond themselves. Dr. Waldinger, who now runs the study, recommends helping kids learn about the satisfaction of being interested in others and building great relationships. The key to success in building relationships is to listen. People who are self-absorbed tend to steer a conversation back to themselves even when it's not about them. Being a good listener means listening with all four senses and asking questions. So, if you want to be happy, make sure to invest in things that are beyond yourself.

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. The Harvard Study of Adult Development, which launched in 1938, is the longest scientific study of happiness ever conducted.
2. Miriam Webster's definition of self absorbed means absorbed in one's own thoughts, activities or interests. Self absorbed people like to get attention and be heard by others, but seldom reciprocate.
3. The key to success in building relationships is to understand and practice the 70/30 Rule.

Do you want to be happier?

"You now have the knowledge and the power to take control of your own happiness. By doing that, you can help but make the world a better place."

I stopped reading the newspaper and started reading a good book in the morning. It made a huge impact in our lives. If you aren't a reader, there is another way. In a 2004 study, participants wrote for 20 minutes each day for three days about either a positive life experience or a control topic. Writing about positive experiences led to higher level of happiness, improved physical health and increased focus for up to six weeks after the writing exercise. In a 2019 study, researchers at the University of Cambridge found that positive memory activation dampened cortisol responses and improved mood. In the 4 Part Happiness Series four scientifically proven strategies to create deeper purpose and meaning in your life were shared.  We'd love to hear the impact they have in your life.

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. A simple, proven strategy to create purpose and meaning in your life.
2. The immediate positive results and long term benefits of writing about positive experiences.
3. How taking control of your own happiness can help make the world a better place.

Chapter Summaries:
In this episode, we focus on the second habit you can practice to increase your level of happiness. If you started to implement the first habit that we covered in part one, I'd love to hear your feedback.

A team member was going through a rough patch in her marriage. She wanted to start exercising, but she didn't know the benefits of exercise. She was surprised to know that Dawn exercises 2 hours every day. In part three, Dawn shares another part of her morning routine.

A National Institute of Health study found that exercise is effective in reducing mortality and in treating symptoms of major depression. Exercise is underutilized by clinicians. Big Pharma doesn't write prescriptions for exercise because they don't make money from it. Ageism is the worst excuse to not prescribe exercise.

A regular exercise practice will increase your level of happiness. You must make a commitment to make the time for it. Here are the steps in using the strategy to increase your level of happiness 1) commit to an exercise routine 2) start small and increase it gradually. 3) Pick activities you enjoy 4) Consider any health challenges and pick your exercise accordingly. Are you motivated to create a daily exercise routine? How often? Let's us know!

Dr. Martin Seligman, who was president of the American Psychological Association at the time and is now known as the father of positive psychology, announced that finally, the time had come.

I'm always looking for ways to increase my happiness and create deeper purpose and meaning in my life. So when I heard about the four proven strategies to create purpose and meaning overseas, I was intrigued. I was excited to learn that I could change my brain to scan for the positive instead of the negative and that by doing so, I could increase my level of happiness.

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. The history of positive psychology and the shift from focusing on negative aspects of human behavior to positive aspects. 2. The importance of gratitude in creating happiness, and how gratitude can lead to success. 3. How to change your brain to focus on positive aspects of your life, using the "three good things" gratitude practice.

What it's like to sell a business overseas; 2. The joys of retiring or semi-retiring to a life of travel and adventure; 3. What it's like to be a volunteer for a turtle conservation effort - or manage it.

He also has some book projects that he is working on.

This year the turtle farm in Isla Mujeres, Mexico was taken back by the government, probably due to mismanagement. The new director of environment and ecology needed volunteers to help with the conservation efforts previously managed by the Tortuga Farm. Jim has been diving with the turtles during mating season off the south tip of the island for eight years and has been taking pictures of them turtles are an endangered species in Mexico they lay a lot of eggs on the beaches. He realized they needed a lot of help, particularly someone to to manage the effort. Jim "picked up the clipboard" and is so glad he did.

In this episode Dawn provides an overview and results of a recent released study, Longevity and the New Journey of Retirement.  Age Wave and Edward Jones surveyed more than 11,000 North American adults, largely pre-retirees and retirees, to explore how
the journey of retirement unfolds, the patterns of people’s experience in retirement, and the keys to thriving along the way. Some highlights include:

  • Today’s retirees appreciate their longevity and they now count the ideal length of retirement at an average of 29 years.
  • The majority now view retirement as “a new chapter of life,” while only a quarter still think of it as the traditional “time for rest and relaxation.”
  • Retirees who are thriving today were well-prepared for entering this stage of life and made more focused preparation.
  • The Work/retirement lines have blurred. There is no clear definition of when retirement starts, and 59% of retirees and pre-retirees said an ideal mix of work and leisure in retirement includes some work.

Retirement is not what it's cracked up to be for those who don't understand the four phases of retirement and how to find satisfaction in later life.

"The successful ingredients of a good retirement have to include an assumption, which I always make in my workshops, that good health has to be a given and so does a fairly stable financial situation."

Dr. Riley Moynes is an author, consultant, and educator with over 40 years of experience in the field of retirement. He is best known for his work on the Four Phases of Retirement, which outlines the different stages of retirement and offers advice on how to make the most of each phase.

This is Dr. Riley Moynes's story...

Dr. Riley Moynes struggled in retirement until he realized that he needed a sense of purpose. He found that many people shared his experience and decided to write a book about it. The book, "The Four Phases of Retirement," outlines the different stages of retirement and offers advice on how to make the most of it. In the fourth and final phase, retirees find a new sense of purpose that brings them happiness and fulfillment..

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How people's expectations of retirement often don't match reality, leading to feelings of loss and depression
2. The importance of finding a sense of purpose in retirement
3. The idea that the happiest retirees are those who have found a way to make a contribution in their later years

Chapter Summaries:
1) Dr. Riley Moynes is author of the best selling book the Four Phases of Retirement: what to Expect When You're Retiring. Dawn has just finished reading his book and is excited to hear more about his work on her show Magnetic Monday with Dawn.

2) After 40 years of working, he retired. He struggled in the first phase of his retirement, and then he found his stride in the second phase. He has written a book based on his research and interviews with people who have been through the same thing. He finds that most information on retirement is focused on the financial side.

3) Good health and stable financial situation are key to a successful retirement. People need to have a sense of purpose and do something that makes them want to get up in the morning and get involved in things. In the vacation phase of his retirement, he was more egocentric and it was all about him.

4) Join us for a free workshop to plan your overseas beta test. We'll help you plan and execute your perfect exit. For more information, go here.

5) About 50% to 60% of retirees break through to phase four. They reinvent themselves, they rewire, and they find a thing or things that make them want to get up in the morning. Research shows that with a sense of purpose we are more likely to stay healthier and to live longer.

6) People are surprised when they get to Phase Two of their life and they find it difficult to move out of it. The key is a sense of purpose. People need to remember the things that they love to do and have done well over the years. People have to be open to change and not afraid to fail.

Ten years ago, no one in the United States thought a civil war was a possibility, much less talked about it. In recent polls, nearly 50% of Americans think a civil war is coming.  For over 240 two years, America was a shining example to the world of how the peaceful transition of power works in a democracy.  The Shining Beacon on the Hill sadly has lost its luster. Hopefully it will not only be restored so there can be a more perfect union, and America may once again set a good example for the rest of the world. The good news is that voter participation is up dramatically since the late 1990s. The bad news: historically it has taken war to solve society’s big problems. Even if you decide not to leave the United States, it may still be prudent to move some of your assets out of the country. Having a Plan B is very wise, even if you never implement it. One of my mentors, John Addison said: "if it's easy, it's sleazy." He was onto something, because I see it all the time now that I'm out of the network marketing industry. People try to sell me on get-rich-quick schemes, but I know better. I know that there's always a price to pay for everything in life. Take inflation, for example. It's running rampant and it doesn't seem like there's any end in sight. My brother John, who's a 9th grade science teacher, always tells his students that part of the reason he teaches them science is so that they can critically think and avoid being taken advantage of as adults. And he's right and it helps if you're financially illiterate.

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. The importance of financial literacy and education
2. The role that debt can play in achieving financial goals
3. The reality of inflation and its causes
4. Practical steps to address inflation on a personal level

Aristotle used  "eudaimonia" to describe the highest good humans can strive toward – to describe a life ‘well lived’. Some translate it as ‘happiness’. For Aristotle, it meant practicing virtues like courage, wisdom, good humor, kindness, and moderation. Perhaps "flourishing" or "prosperity" is a better word. They conjure an image of one who’s successful, healthy, and enjoys a good life, and perhaps a bit of good fortune.

The Japanese have an ancient but familiar concept called “ikigai”. It means “a reason to get up in the morning” or more eloquently “waking up to joy”. It’s related to the concept of “flow”.  It is our Best Moments: when we do what we love, what we are good at and if we are fortunate - also brings value to the lives of others.  How can you wake up to joy? FIRE stands for, financial independence retire early.  The movement started a little over a decade ago, some books were written about the concept and then the millennials really climbed onboard. A big part of it is that people are really frustrated  - that has lead to The Great Resignation.  We just don’t want to have to work at a job (they hate) forever and never be able to retire.  There are a lot of factors that have made it popular, but, as you look closer at the core philosophies, for most people, it's probably not going to work.

Dawn strongly disagrees with a lot of the FIRE's underlying principles. In this episode she  unpacks the FIRE movement, why it's problematic. Dawn explains the first part of her ESCAPE Wealth Philosophy - a much better philosophy and strategy in her opinion.

She wondered if she could ever afford to retire and decided it would only be possible if she moved out of the the United States.  She looked at many options and took an exploratory trip to Ecuador and was hooked.  Luck and good fortune smiled on her in 2019 when she sold her 4 year old specialty restaurant in Prescott, Arizona.  She moved her proceeds to an offshore CD that earns 9.65%.  Her rent is $680 a month for a modern 1600 square foot apartment overlooking the river in Cuenca. It would be a 2 million dollar apartment in New York.  Sheryl is never bored with a busy social calendar and 1-2X per week visits to a natural hot springs spa just a 30 cent bus ride away.  Her advice: don't contemplate, just do it!

Tommy and Allison Merandi traded in their high stress and no time Atlanta lifestyle for Caribbean Island Life.  Instead of commuting for 3 hours in bumper to bumper traffic, six days a week, Allison now walks her 2 dogs 3-4 times a day. Instead of just spending Sundays together, Tommy and Allison cherish their daily together time. Tommy thought he'd retired, but the allure of helping to run the island's most popular gringo bar was just too attractive. Oh yeah, they also started a new business distributing eco-friendly packaging for bars, restaurants and Islenos. The timing couldn't have been better, given new laws banning single use plastics and styrofoam.   https://www.facebook.com/biogreenblue

Dawn:00:44Okay. I'm here with Kari and Sam Skaggs and we're excited to talk with them today about their overseas life. Thank you so much for being here. Kari, would you like to tell us a little bit about how this all came about?

Kari Skaggs:Yeah, thanks Dawn for, um, asking us to do this. Okay. So now Seas, Trees and RVs is the name of our journey.

Dawn:I love it.

Kari Skaggs:Um, do you want to know how it came about? Okay. In 2014 we were vacationing here on Isla for the 10th time or something like that. And after that vacation, we were preparing for our military retirement, both of us at that in that year for the next year. And we started talking about what it would be like to live down here in the future. And it was just a kind of as a conversation that we had at the beach one day and that was it for a long time.

01:42And then in 2014, um, 2015, excuse me, I retired and Sam was already retired. And then we kind of started talking about, you know, kids going off to college, all those kinds of things were happening within the next few years. And the conversation, yeah, turned into a whiteboard and then the whiteboard turned into tasks. And then we kind of just said this, you know, like, uh, it evolved into being like a project. It was fun. There was no, you know, whatever, but no commitment at the time. It was just fun. And then 2016 we started talking about, um, the reality of this, this has been fun because we really make this happen. So that's how it started. It was on, we got a conversation on the beach and in a whiteboard and then eventually we sold our home, bought an RV, moved into and went on the road in 2017 and we're about to go into the third season full time.

Dawn:02:40So this was about a three or four year period?

Kari Skaggs:Yep.

Dawn:Okay.

Kari Skaggs:That was two years of like, no kidding planning. And then we executed in 2017 and we're about to go into our third season living abroad full time.

Dawn:Right. Awesome. So you're, and you're headed back the States to do some RVing?

Kari Skaggs:Leave Isla here. On Tuesday we're going back to Arizona, pick up the RV. I'm gonna knock out the rest of the continental United States before we come back here and in the winter and the spring. Yeah.

Dawn:Okay. So, um, so aside from just enjoying the beach, were there other motivating factors that made you want to make this move?

Kari Skaggs:03:28I would say there were a lot of factors that we had dual pensions and we kind of looked at like reversing it and thinking about our kids are, are all gone, we're healthy, we're young, we have the heart for travel. So why not do this now, until waiting until we're a little bit older and maybe limited by whatever conditions. Health conditions or grandchildren or

Dawn:00:44I’m here with Diane Huth, and I'm really excited to chat with you this afternoon and learn more about your impending move.

Diane Huth:I’m so excited I can barely stand it.

Dawn:How did it all come about?

Diane Huth:Oh, I have been working towards this forever. I just didn't realize it. I've always had wanderlust. Um, I, a million years ago when I went to college, I got a degree in Spanish. I lived in Spain and I loved studying overseas and I loved living overseas and I love Latin cultures. And then I went back to the United States and got married and got a job and all those kinds of things. Um, and I worked for three years as a Spanish teacher and I decided that that was not a way to make a living. So I went back to school and got an MBA in international marketing and that was my passion because I wanted to figure out how to go back to Spain and that wonderful overseas life that I had loved as an 18 or 19 year old.

00:59It's like, I want more of that. Um, and I got married and my husband was in, well we were both in international business. I got a job out of graduate school with Reynolds Tobacco in the US he got a job with Firestone international. And so they went to transfer him and I wasn't sure about this getting married thing and he said, I'm going to Brazil next month, are you coming or not? So we got married because I had to get married, we moved to Brazil. So I had the opportunity to go and live in Brazil. So I didn't, I spoke fluent Spanish but no Portuguese, so intensive Berlitz classes for a month. And we got on a plane and flew to Brazil. And so we had another opportunity to explore a wonderful culture and live overseas. And we were there for two wonderful years. And then he got the phone call that he was being transferred to Portugal.

01:50And so it's like we're going to Portugal, and I was working for Johnson and Johnson, which is a wonderful company. I loved working for them. And so I told them I was leaving and they said, well, we're going to arrange for you to meet with our colleague in Portugal. So I got hired in, in Portugal before I ever got there because it's a small international world. And so Portugal's a very small company, er country, in a very small expatriate community. And so the general manager of, um, Firestone was golfing with the general manager of Johnson and Johnson said, I've got this guy coming in with his wife and he hired me site unseen. So I landed with a job with the same company and I loved Portugal. I just, I love living overseas. I loved the adventure. I loved learning foreign languages. So it was always kind of in my life what I wanted to do.

02:40And then we got the phone call. We're moving to Mexico, you're going to a factory in Mexico. And so, um, they had arranged for me to go with Johnson and Johnson in Mexico. And the month befo

Dawn:00:42Are you living the life of your dreams? Do you believe it's even possible? Did you ever go on a vacation and never want to go home? I'm a non-practicing attorney and seven time entrepreneur with more than 30 years of experience in setting up, marketing, managing and maintaining thriving businesses. I had an amazing career as an international business attorney, but it didn't make me happy. The attorney lifestyle just wasn't a good fit for me. For 16 years after that, I went on to become award-winning top producer and popular sales trainer in the relationship marketing industry. It was a great experience. I met lifelong friends, but I knew I was destined for more. In 2010 my husband Tom and I left Southern California and sailed 5,000 miles through the Panama Canal and relocated to Florida where we lived for six years. While moving to Florida was good for us, the Northwest Florida culture was a shock and the weather was much colder than we expected.

00:42This is your host, Dawn Fleming and today I'm here with my husband Tom Clifford and we thought we'd start off our podcast first episode with telling you a little bit about ourselves and how we came up with the idea for this podcast.

00:56We moved to a little Island off the coast of Cancun called Isla Mujeres. We bought ocean front vacation rental property three years ago while we were still living in Florida. And it's a now a four bedroom, four bath luxury property located in El Centro, which is basically downtown Isla Mujeres. And then Tom, you want to tell them about where we're living?

Tom:01:18Well, when the house is rented out, then we live on our
