ADDITIONAL RESOURCES Bible Project Podcast: God's Hot Nose In Exodus 34, God describes himself as “slow to anger,” but many people are uncomfortable with the portrait of God as an angry or emotional being. How does the Bible talk about anger, and how does this help us understand God as slow to anger?

Sunday's teaching on Persevering in Prayer was largely taken from two
parables of Jesus recorded in Luke 18 and Luke 11, but many other relevant
Scriptures were also referred to.
It is suggested you choose from (and modify as appropriate) the questions
below to suit your Group and as the Holy Spirit leads you.
QUESTIONS:
1. To encourage others, have you had an experience you can share of
persevering prayer which was finally answered? - maybe not answered in the
way you expected and possibly even better than you'd hope for!
2.Do you get discouraged and lose heart when the answer to your
prayer request seems a long time coming? If so, has this affected you in
persevering?
Does it help you to not give up, recognising that prayer is firstly about
maintaining and maturing your relationship with God?
As James Montgomery says in his old hymn: "Prayer is the Christian's vital
breath".
· What steps can you take to adjust the focus of your prayer life?
· What have you found helpful that might help others in your Group?
Do you find the thought of making demands of God unashamedly and in
an annoyingly persistent way difficult?
Why do you think this might be? (e.g. maybe it is seen by some as
disrespectful)
Have you had a personal (or corporate) experience where a desperate
situation has caused you to get more fervent in prayer?
What was the result?
Some Take Away Thoughts for personal prayerful consideration:
(i) Do you personally have unanswered prayer requests you
may need to modify or seek God for possible 'hidden' reasons for delay?
(ii) With the example of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane,
grappling in his humanity, with a prayer which could not be answered, do you
(as Jesus ultimately did) need to pray a prayer of surrender to the Father's
will in any particular matter?

Further Resources * Small Group Guide Over the past three weeks, the Sunday preaches have considered 3 very different examples, which Paul cites in 2 Tim.2 as possessing desirable qualities for a disciple of Jesus:
· a dedicated soldier who is focussed on the mission he/she is engaged in
· a disciplined athlete who runs with integrity to win the winner’s prize
· a diligent farmer
1.In your discipleship of Christ, which do you see yourself as most like and in what way – the soldier, athlete or farmer?
Paul felt confident to say to the believers in Corinth (1 Cor.11 v.1), to imitate him in the way he lived, as he imitated Christ.
What aspects of your life and service as a disciple of Jesus do you feel confident to encourage others to imitate you in?3. Paul also expressed to the Corinthian believers that whilst they could have many teachers to learn from, he saw himself as their one spiritual father. (1 Cor.4 v.15)
Have you had the blessing of a special relationship with a spiritual father or mother at any stage of your Christian walk with the Lord? Do you feel able to share who that relationship was with and in what ways they were of help to you?4. The following qualities of a farmer were recognised in Sunday’s preach:
· diligent – hardworking
· dependent on God
· patient in waiting
· forward looking
· persevering
· a faithful steward
· passionate
Which of these qualities do you consider that you need to grow in to become a more effective disciple of Christ?
Do you have a trusted person to help you in this, who you could become accountable to?
Is there someone in Redeemer who the Holy Spirit is impressing on your heart who you could get alongside and help them grow as a disciple of Jesus?
Paul’s instruction in Titus 2 v.1 - 10 may be of help if your Group discusses what to teach/impart to people at different life-stages.
Is anyone experiencing a particularly hard time currently and would like prayer from the Group to help you persevere whilst drawing strength from God and trusting Him to bring you through the situation you are facing?

Part 1 of a series in the book of Judges - looking at how we can identify and break the cycle of sin in our lives
There is no audio recording from this week as we had a screening of the ‘Children of Shanghai’ documentary and an interview with the pioneer founders of Care for Children. For various reasons we cannot show the documentary but below is a link to a another screening and interview. The documentary below is shorter and the interview by others, but does give a good taste of the experience.
