This bonus episode is a special conversation between Claire and Noelle Tarr of Coconuts & Kettlebells and the Well Fed Women Podcast. Both Claire and Noelle experienced serious postpartum mood disorders following the births of their first children, and we have always felt that these topics just aren’t talked about widely enough. It’s reported that at least 1 in 7 women experience postpartum mood disorders like postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety, yet many of us have never heard someone discuss what it’s like to actually go through it. This episode is an honest conversation about our individual experiences, including the moments we both knew we needed help, what we did to recover, how to better prepare for the postpartum period if you are pregnant, and what you may want to look out for if you are a new mom or know a new mom. We talk about the difference between dietitians vs nutrition coaches, and what Laura is doing to debunk the stereotype that all dietitians are still using the food pyramid. We also talk about body positivity, fat shaming, the importance of sleep, and how to start small with revamping your relationship with food. Sassy Dietician Support the podcast! Armen Hammer, ladies and gentlemen! If you don’t know who Armen is, do you even go here? Armen is one of the original hosts of the Wodcast Podcast, and one of our inspirations for starting our own podcast in the first place. This week we get to fangirl a little bit, and also chat with him about the evolution of media in the CrossFit sphere. We discuss his own development as a podcaster and video host, and how some things are bound to grow and adapt, while other things (like sneaking microphones into the CrossFit Games) never change. You can check Armen’s stuff out on Armen Hammer TV. SPONSORED BY FOUR ATHLETICS Support the podcast! Click the SUBSCRIBE button on iTunes! Please leave us a review on iTunes! From Justin’s past life working crazy hours on political campaigns in DC, to sitting at a picnic table with us at Camp Timeout, we hear why Justin is passionate about communicating and connecting with the CrossFit community. We also discuss how the Morning Chalk Up broke the CrossFit Games changes, hear about the qualities that make up a true journalist, and talk about what it’s like doing burpees in the Congressional fitness center. We are so excited to welcome Greg Glassman, founder and chairman of CrossFit, back to the podcast this week (check out episode 174 for his first appearance)! We sat down with Greg to hear a little bit more about the thought process behind the recent CrossFit Games changes, and how this signals a shift in priorities for CrossFit as a whole. We also discuss the growth of CrossFit Health and the CFMDL1 program, why Greg thinks it’s important to be working directly with physicians, and why he says he’s not in the business of slinging data or out to change public health. There’s some big news in our GGW world this week – Claire is pregnant! We are thrilled, but it’s also been a tough journey for her to get to this point. We’re halfway through the year and it’s time to look back and see how far we’ve come with Claire’s “Year of Self” and Joy’s “Year of Connection.” We’ve definitely come a long way from years past where we’ve had to recap and explain timelines missed and goals forgotten, but having year-long themes has really worked out for us this time! 2018 has already been a crazy year in a lot of ways, but we’re excited to see what happens next! What do the patriarchy, Miss America, beach sunsets, and metaphorical donuts have in common? If you’ve been here for a while, you can probably guess that we’ve found a way to tie them all together in another kind-of-ridiculous, somewhat off-topic, classic J&C episode. This week is a classic J&C Q&A sesh! We discuss everything from our latest hair product faves, to bigger topics like how we went from panicking about our WOD schedules and tracking everything we eat, to living stress-free about our workout and diet habits, and even advocating for taking a few extra days (or weeks!) out of the gym. We also discuss food guilt and the fact that, even though it’s something we’ve been discussing for years, it’s still a huge topic worth talking about. This week we have our much-anticipated interview with psychic medium Michelle Dewitt! We hear from Michelle about when she first knew that she was a medium, how she began to cultivate this skill, and why it took until she was 40 for her to really dive in and make it her life’s work. She tells us some of the craziest messages she’s received, and the most intense experiences she’s had. And we talk about how, whether you believe in psychics or not, the work of a medium should be to bring more connection, intuition, and confidence into your life – who can argue with that? What’s the difference between self care and self indulgence? Do you ever feel guilty for wanting to “follow your passion” when most of the world is just trying to survive? We cover these topics this week, plus Joy tries a new cycling studio and sees a psychic, and we’re transported aaalll the way back to Episode 50 when Claire had a less-than-convincing Tarot reading and swore off psychics forever. This week it’s J&C and we are coming to terms with a few things. First, our feels about a certain CrossFit celeb who we may have been too hard on, an official statement about some eyebrow judgments we made, then our feelings about IV spas, and some less controversial opinions about marathon training, coaching experiences, and a long overdue life update from Claire about her up-and-coming flower business. Sometimes having your casual conversations with your BFF recorded and broadcast to the world can be trickier than you think… but luckily, it all comes back to our community and our goal to connect women around the world through a healthy mindset and way of life. It’s time for a classic J&C episode, and I have to say, this week we are really in our element with a lot of randomness and a LOT of Mean Girls references… even for us. Having grown up as an athlete, she was surprised by the lack of resources and research-based information that was available to her as she tried to stay active during her first pregnancy, and then as she struggled to recover from a traumatic C-section. Brianna decided to live out the saying, “Be who you needed when you were younger,” and set out to create a coaching program to support pregnant and postpartum athletes. This week we dive right in, with our reactions to the past 10 days of non-stop “Resolutions” diet culture. How do you “break up” with diet culture? We talk about the ways we’ve evolved in the past few years and how we think the world is ready for Diet Culture 2.0. We share some tips from the National Eating Disorder Association about how to love your body, and talk about the different things we appreciate about what our bodies can do. Also, Joy talks about her new “happy light,” taking Scott to his first FitWall class, and we reminisce about Claire’s past experiences with pole dancing… which of course leads us to talking about Vegas, and inevitably, Britney. This week we are back with Dr. Lindsey Matthews, founder of BIRTHFIT! In our first conversation with Lindsey in Episode 194, we discussed all things prenatal and pre-pregnancy, and this week she is back to talk about life, health, and fitness in the postpartum period. The BIRTHFIT community is fond of saying that “postpartum lasts forever,” and even though it’s tempting to want to race to return to your old routine, Lindsey talks about the importance of focusing on recovery and being realistic about everything your body went through during the labor and delivery process. From the immediate recovery period and the first few weeks at home, to getting through the first year and beyond–including a discussion about postpartum mood disorders–we discuss setting up a support network, prioritizing your recovery, learning to re-engage your core, and evolving into your new identity as a mom. We are excited to welcome Adee back to GGW for her third appearance (see Episodes 131 and 183), and this time her husband, Michael, is with us too! This episode is all about living with insecurities–developing them, ignoring them, hiding them, admitting them, owning them, working on them, and sometimes taking two steps forward and five steps back. And YES, even successful and confident people like these two deal with insecurities every day! We also talk to Adee and Michael about how their entrepreneurial personalities mesh in their marriage, and how their relationship has affected their businesses. Support the podcast! We are so excited to catch up with CrossFit Games Masters Champ Shellie Edington this week! Shellie made her GGW debut in Ep.172 last October, and we love her perspective on lifelong fitness and what it takes to be a professional athlete in your 50s. This week we sit down and discuss her training for the 2017 Games season, how she’s changed it up this year from past years, and what she’s looking at for the future. Support the podcast! It’s just us this week! It’s been over a month since we sat down and just caught up, and in this episode we talk about whether or not we would switch lives, what our latest #marriagehacks are, what we do to work our weaknesses, and even give a little Whole30 update. We were lucky enough to visit the Mind Pump Media studio in San Jose, CA and sit down for an afternoon with Sal, Adam, and Justin to discuss, well, pretty much everything. This 2.5-hour Mega Episode is just a peek into the knowledge and insight that the Mind Pump team brings to the table, covering topics from the evolution of CrossFit, to the mindset behind bodybuilding, to life balance, entrepreneurship, marriage hacks, and childhood trauma. It’s a little bit of everything and you should probably just hit Play already, because no 100-word description is going to do this episode justice. Support the podcast! Our love for all things Emily has really hit its stride (see episodes 111 and 159 for our previous love affairs)! This week we sit down and discuss how Emily views longterm fitness, how she handles haters, and why Janis Joplin is her spirit animal. We talk about life, travel, acro yoga, old ladies in the gym locker room, and generally have such a great time that we don’t even remember to talk about Regionals. Which is actually kind of great. Steph is no stranger to GGW (see episodes 62 and 75!) and we are so excited to have her back this week to catch up and talk about her latest project, the Women’s Strength Summit. Steph continues to be a role model, trailblazer, and general badass, and this episode is all about what she’s learned about herself and her business in the past year, her mission to support strong women, and how she’s engaging her community and the tribe of experts around her to bring even more value to the conversation about health and empowerment. With our bicentennial episode next week, we kind of feel like this week is a bit of a transition. And while we have grown a lot since Episode 100, some thing never change, so we celebrate our last episode in the 100s with an old fashioned catch-up sesh. We discuss our opinion on the Reebok Grace shoes, give an update about Joy’s thoughts on S-Town and Claire’s pelvic floor, and worry about whether or not anyone is going to show up at our party this weekend. Pretty standard, but as always these episodes are our favorites! PS, you are coming to our 200th episode party though, right? Support the podcast! Click the SUBSCRIBE button on iTunes! We are so inspired by the women in our world who make their dreams happen, and this week we are so excited to talk to the ultra creative, brave, and badass founder of The Chestee, Nicole Biscuiti. Nicole started The Chestee after a particularly painful Wodapalooza workout left her trying to explain her collarbone bruises at her business formal job. Since then, she has learned a lot about taking risks, putting yourself out there, and being ok with the unknown–not to mention how to create a fashion-forward functional product–and we ask her about all of it! Our Costa Rica trip has come and gone, but this week it’s like we never left with this episode, recorded live by the pool at our hotel! We had such an amazing time doing beach WODs, yoga, ziplining, surfing, paddle boarding, eating plantains… but especially getting to know the amazing group of listeners who came with us! Ok let’s start by saying that there are a LOT of F-Bombs in this episode. So, you’ve been warned. We also might as well warn you that this is probably our favorite Juli episode to date, so get ready! This week we cover how to not give a F, how to build a forward-thinking brand, how to have flawless eyebrows, how to create new recipes, and how to stay married to a husband who won’t make any decisions about anything. So basically we talk about everything. It’s the best, because Juli is the best. Support the podcast! Click the SUBSCRIBE button on iTunes! We rehash every detail of our 17.5 experience, including our behind-the-scenes access to the announcement, our brushes with fame aka Dave Castro, the awesome listeners we met, and the beet burger Joy found that she could eat for the rest of her life. We’ve always talked about the difference between a routine and a rut, but this week Joy finds out she has crossed over into a rut, and we’re not sure what to do about it. What’s the best way to respond to a rut? Where do you draw the line between buying new throw pillows to feel better and selling everything you own to live on a sailboat? We also keep the conversation going about maintaining balance in the Open, and talk about how the life/health/marriage/motherhood/work balance is really just a matter of ruthless prioritization. Every year we say it, we mean it, but somehow we still get caught up in it… The Open Crazies. The Open is great because it gives you a reason to push yourself beyond the norm, but it can also give you unrealistic expectations. Not only that, but suddenly you are literally looking at a list of scores from everyone else in the world, and it’s impossible not to compare. This week we talk about getting caught up in this trap, how you can stay away from it, and what to tell yourself if you start having stress dreams about Dave Castro. Support the podcast! We thought we couldn’t love Shane Farmer any more… but then we met his wife Kianne, and now our love for the Farmer family is getting out of control. We are so excited to have them both join us this week, to talk about how they met, their life as an entrepreneurial power couple, and the marriage hacks they use to survive working from home together. Shane gives us an update on how Dark Horse Rowing is going, and of course we have to talk about the Open just a little. There might also be a fun secret revealed! Ok guys, let’s bring the pendulum back to the center. This week we recap the amazing responses to last week’s episode, talk a little bit about the comparison trap, and think of some strategies for tricking yourself into feeling amazing when you don’t feel so amazing. We swing the pendulum a little in this episode, from goofy and playful last week to dealing with some real life crap this week. We have a check-in about the Year of Less, which turns into a gut check about anxiety, work/life balance, and what happens when you feel like you just can’t get ahead. It’s all about our listeners this week, with answers to your questions from topics about marriage to discussing going commando under your shmushmu. Find out if we would rather be alone on a desert island or be with a person we hate, what our suggestions are for getting prepped for the Open as a normal human, what tall ladies can do about their oly lifts, and what happens when Joy gets the giggles. Our nutrition series continues this week with the amazing Jason Phillips. Jason’s journey began with a battle with anorexia, which stemmed from his experience living everyone’s 90s dream as an Abercrombie model who was discovered in a mall. Spoiler alert, it was less glamorous than we all hoped it would be. However since recovering from his eating disorder, he has used the knowledge and wisdom he gained from his experience and has gone on to receive a degree in exercise science, consult for reality weight loss shows, travel with the PGA tour, and has helped several functional fitness athletes improve performance with Driven Performance Labs, Jason Phillips Nutrition, and The Driven Life. This was a pretty big week in the GGW world, as we flew to CFHQ to interview Greg Glassman, founder and CEO of CrossFit. Greg reached out to us this summer and wanted to have a conversation about functional aesthetic, and the idea of “a better beautiful.” We obviously jumped at the opportunity, and are so excited to share this conversation with you guys today. Greg talks about the change in our cultural mindset when it comes to what is considered beautiful, and how we can continue to evolve the conversation in a world where unattainable beauty standards have been around as long as humankind. And we find out why Greg wants CrossFitters to focus our fitness journey on health and biomarkers, not on ideal body types, PRs, or even a podium spot at The CrossFit Games. Support the podcast! There’s something about the start of fall that just makes us want to set goals! We love interviewing great people, but sometimes it’s refreshing to just sit down for a J&C episode! This week we put on our therapy hats and answer your questions about balancing life and expectations in the gym and with your diet, using CrossFit to cope with anxiety and stress, and how to muster up the courage to step into the box for the first time. We also give a little State of the Podcast address, and get back to the roots of why we do what we do and the driving force behind this little project called GGW. We are so excited and honored to have Coach B on the podcast this week! Mike Burgener is a Marine, a Level 5 Senior International Weightlifting Coach, and designed the CrossFit Weightlifting course. If you’ve ever done the Burgener warm-up you are familiar with his handiwork… But what you probably don’t know is that Coach B is one of the most genuine people we’ve ever had on the podcast, with a true passion and love for his sport. In this episode we find out how Coach B got to where he is today, and most importantly, why he prefers to coach women in weightlifting! Support the podcast! Click the SUBSCRIBE button on iTunes! Well, it’s mostly 20 minutes of flirting and swooning because Joy can’t get over how beautiful Aaron Samuels, eerrrr Shane Farmer, is in real life. We also cover how he almost lost his finger in a wedding ring disaster, which makes us really happy that Qalo exists (discount code GGW at Qalo.com !!) We’ve been working with Sarah Pierce on nutrition coaching for about a month now, and it’s time to talk about our progress! In this month’s check-in with Sarah, we hear more about her journey through the diet jungle and how she arrived at macro counting as her favorite solution. Sarah talks about how to keep a healthy mindset about macro counting when it comes to vacations or special events or just off-days, we talk about carb timing and intermittent fasting, and even get some tips for general healthy eating for you non-macro counters out there! We are back from Carson, and as expected we are super drunk on CrossFit Koolaid and loving every minute of it! Joy met Bob Harper, Sandy smooched Coach Burgener, and Claire didn’t even get sunburned… I’d say the weekend was a big WIN. In this episode we recap our Games experience, including our favorite vendors and new products, thoughts on the ring push-ups, and TDC’s hairstyle choices. And now we just want to live in a place where we can wear booty shorts and eat sweet potato and avocado and drink bulletproof coffee all day every day… Is it time to go back to CrossFitLand yet? We are so excited to have Emily Abbott back on the show this week as she heads into the 2016 CrossFit Games! It’s been close to a year since Emily’s first appearance on GGW, and we hear all about the whirlwind traveling and training experiences she’s been having, talk about how her training changed after her experience at The Games last year, and what her goals are this time around. She tells us about competing in the 16.1 announcement, eating burgers, and the last thing she’d want to see come out of the hopper in Carson. We can’t wait to cheer Emily on!
We have a big paleo blogger crush on Taylor Riggs and we are so excited to get to chat with her this week! We get awkwardly technical about how much we love her Instagram account, talk about how Taylor got into cooking and clean eating, and hear all about her upcoming cookbook “Real Food Real Simple.” Taylor tells us what it’s like to live with Type 1 Diabetes and geeks out about her bluetooth insulin pump, and of course we talk about our favorite products and desserts. It’s basically an old-fashioned girl talk sesh and we aren’t mad about it!
It’s almost time for the 2016 CrossFit Games!! And this week we talk to 2015 9th place Games finisher, Margaux Alvarez. Margaux tells us how she got started in CrossFit, including the ill-advised but ultimately fateful competition decisions that propelled her into competitive the CrossFit world. She tells us what it’s like to train for the Games, her favorite ways to fuel her WODs, and her best and worst case scenarios for what could come out of the hopper, plus much more. Our flexible dieting journey continues this week with Sarah Pierce! We both had great results and experiences with WAG, but after finishing our programming, we wanted to work with someone who could help us develop a more long-term mindset. Enter Sarah, who has many years of experience coaching CrossFit athletes, gymnasts, runners–you name it–and now offers a personalized approach to macro counting and nutrition counseling! Sarah answers our questions about how she comes up with her custom plans, how to see results without letting food take over your life, and why drinking wine is (usually) just fine. Whew. Finally, a J&C episode! It feels like it’s been foreeeever! This week is all about catching up, and we hear about Claire’s new job and how she’s balancing her new schedule, learn just how deep Joy’s obsession with true crime shows really runs, and answer all your questions about life after WAG and our favorite summer products. We talk a little bit about what Chris Moore said about “mastering the art of knowing (your)self,” and where we’re at in our own process on that path. And we learn that that the journey never ends, whether you’re dealing with a postpartum belly or extra-lean shoulder muscles.
This episode is about Chris Moore, the Barbell Buddha himself. We learn about what motivates him, what brings him joy, and the work he hopes to do with his life. It’s about his influence on us as athletes, podcasters, and human beings; his ability to constantly challenge himself and those around him; and his serious love for ice cream. It is also a small piece of Chris’ legacy, as barely 24 hours after this conversation was recorded, Chris passed away from sudden heart failure at his home in Amsterdam. But we know that Chris’ work is not over, and we are honored beyond description to have a small part in continuing to spread his message through this episode. We know you are going to love this interview. And if you’d like to help make Chris’ dreams for his art and his family a reality, please visit gofundme.com/mooreironheart
This week we are joined by Noelle Tarr and Stefani Ruper from The Paleo Women Podcast! Noelle and Stefani are definitely #podcastsquadgoals, and we learn how they came together to create their show and what motivates them to want to help people achieve a healthy life. We also discuss body image and the biggest body struggles we’re facing right now, why finding balance is so important and yet so complex, and throw around some serious opinions about apple varieties.
The month of May turned in to the month of MEN on the podcast. We aren’t mad about it and we’re keeping the trend going. This week we interview a guy who puts the most interesting man in the world to shame. Founder of The XWOD program, Ryan has worked with nearly every Crossfitter you can think of and he’s BFFs with Sam Dancer. Need we say more? Ryan holds multiple world records for jumping and is a world renowned coach, and our minds are blown about 100 times in this episode as we learn all the ways that max height box jumps can be translated into the way you think about life and goals. Pat and Taz Barber are the greatest power couple in CrossFit, and we are so excited to have them on GGW this week! We go over their amazing bragging rights as CrossFit pioneers, backgrounds as competitive CrossFitters, and their latest project, “Warmup and Workout.” But things really open up when we get on the topic of #marriagehacks, Pat’s surfboard collection, and we even learn a little bit about Magic: the Gathering, because if there’s one thing you should know about us by now, it’s that if we’re not a little off-topic, we’re probably not doing it right.
If Shane Farmer is the Aaron Samuels of CrossFit, does that make us Cady or Regina? We’ll have to figure that out later, because for now we have an amazing interview for you! Shane is here for his second GGW appearance and we talk all about the California regionals, get an update on Dark Horse Rowing, hear about Shane’s upcoming European tour, and catch up on Snapchat shenanigans. We also dive into some discussion about gender roles and chivalry, and uncover a deep, dark, swing-dancin’ secret that is going to make you swoon. You’ve been warned.
Our second month of GGW Book Club has come to a close (ok, that was like 2 weeks ago, but better late than never, right?), and it’s time to talk about “Presence” by Amy Cuddy! We recap Amy’s story and the main points of the book, talk about how “imposter syndrome” affects us in our own lives, and pick a few tips from “Presence” that we want to try out. We hope you enjoy, now get out there and “fake it til you become it!”
Life, goals, expectations, abs, tortilla chips, a bronze-skinned, SoCal-dwelling alter ego… We want it all. In this episode we try to find a little bit of balance for all of those things, starting with a wrap-up of our WAG experiences and some discussion about what our lives are going to look like moving forward. Spoiler, Joy’s life is still going to involve a LOT of PB2. We answer a few listener questions, recap our super fun photo shoot, and lament about how great it would be to have a full-time stylist to do our hair in the morning. Because really. #SOFAMOUS Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
This week we welcome back #superfanChrisG for his record-setting 5th podcast appearance, and Claire’s husband Brandon makes his GGW debut! We know it’s called “Girls” Gone WOD, but on this episode, the boys finally get their say–and we have to admit, they do a pretty great job. We cover topics from male body image to gender roles, marriage hacks, the least creepy way to give compliments to fellow female athletes, and way more. Turns out we have some pretty great guys in our lives, and we think you’re gonna like them, too. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
Juli Bauer is back, need we say more? Except this time it’s Juli ROTH, thankyouverymuch! This week we catch up with a recap of her destination Jamaican wedding, the scoop on her amazing wedding dress, and, well let’s just say that parts of this episode might as well be an Us Weekly article, and we don’t hate it. Juli also answers your questions about her husband’s secret identity (is he actually just in the witness protection program? we may never know), her adventures in fashion blogging, her new favorite spandex, and WAY more. As always, the episode ends feeling like we could talk for another hour, but that’s why we frickin love Juli!
Well you might have noticed this episode is a little shorter than usual, but life happens… and so do crying babies. Yep, this week’s episode got cut a little short by a fussy Miles, but we like to think we made up for it with an episode filled with actual CrossFit topics! We discuss the WODs we’ve been doing lately, Claire talks about feeling like she’s finally caught the CrossFit bug again, and Joy talks about her latest PRs. Joy talks about her new kinda-predictable goal, and Claire talks about a new totally-outta-left-field goal, and we finally review the ICON undies. See? I told you it was packed! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
Marriage hacks. Everyone’s got em, everyone needs em (even if you aren’t married!), and this episode is full of em! From sock sorting to snack separation, positive feedback, compromise, and love languages, we read favorite marriage hacks from our listeners and divulge our own (let’s just say we kinda hope Brandon and Scott never listen to this episode). This week we also talk about body image and our ever-changing relationship with the way that we look, and Claire gets real about postpartum depression. Not gonna lie, we kind of have our therapy hats on this week. Or therapy donut headbands. Whatever floats your boat. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
Even though last week was an old-fashioned J&C episode, it still feels like it’s been forever since we really caught up. So this week we seek to remedy that! We discuss our favorite products lately, talk about a few summer goals, and find out what the difference is between people who love morning WODs (aka Joy) and people who will just never love mornings no matter how hard they try (aka Claire). Last but not least we try out a new segment where we ask each other for advice, and up this week are questions about food prep and staying motivated in the face of plateaus. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
The inaugural GGW Book Club episode is here! Join us as we recap “Year of Yes” by Shonda Rhimes. In this bonus episode, we talk about what we took away from the book, and react to what you guys had to say about which “Yesses” you resonated with, how this book helped you learn to embrace your own badassery, and whether or not it’s really possible to “do it all.”
Even though we are still dealing with trust issues about that 14.5 repeat, this episode is all about moving on with our lives. Joy talks about her new Metcon loyalty (hashtag Reebok van), Claire talks about finally getting back in the gym on a regular basis, we give an update on our WAG progress, and talk about motivating yourself to stick with tough goals. We also revisit the all-too-familiar (but still very important!) question about whether or not CrossFit really is dangerous, and what you can do to make sure you have a safe experience. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
Leah West is one of our faves and we couldn’t be happier to have her back on the podcast this week. She joined is for 15.1 and 15.5, so it seems only right to bring her on to close out the 2016 CrossFit Open! Not only do we recap the WODs we’ve seen so far, we of course get the full update on what Leah’s been up to this year: a move and a region change, a change in perspective on her training, and her new love for powerlifting. And of course predictions for 16.5! It’s the last week of the Open… Enjoy it and good luck!
Athlete Elisa Schauer is hanging out with us on the podcast this week, and we are so excited to have her! Elisa has an endurance and triathlon background, and originally found CrossFit to satisfy her itch for intensity and a team atmosphere. She went from not being able to do a single banded pull-up to setting her sights on Regionals–and along the way she conquered an eating disorder, gained a new appreciation for her body, and even changed careers to become a full-time CFL1. Elisa is also a consultant for The Feed X, which is now offering our custom curated Girls Gone WOD Box… so go check it out! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
It’s another installment of the CrossFit Open extravaganza, and this week we are joined by Coach Mike and SuperFanChrisG! We are live for Dave Castro’s (somewhat bizarre charades version) announcement, and then go straight into discussions about technique, strategy, and planning for the WOD. Hint: Just keep moving! And of course, since Coach Mike loves CrossFit more than anyone else we know, and because Chris G. is Chris G., a fair amount of general CrossFit love and excessive randomness goes on in this episode, too. I mean, we were drinking wine. We regret nothing. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
Crossfit Open 2016 continues! This week we watch the Open announcement live with Crossfit Jai’s owner/head coach TJ Binkley. TJ was our second guest ever on GGW Podcast and we’re thrilled to have him back to help calm our nerves for yet another brutal WOD. He breaks it down in to what he thinks will be the most important part of the WOD, so be sure to listen to this episode before you complete 16.2! Remember to tag us in your Open scores and give us a shout out on your performance. We love seeing your badassery! Now go get it!! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
We LOVE Nicole Christensen, CF Seminar staff and owner at CrossFit Roots. So much so that we had to bring her back for a third episode! We discuss what Nicole has learned through CrossFitting during two pregnancies, using CrossFit to recover postpartum, and coaching over 20 pregnant athletes in the past few years. And we obviously can’t ignore the fact that the frickin 2015 CROSSFIT OPEN starts today! We have our predictions, Nicole has hers, but we all agree that the Open makes people go crazy. But hey, bring it on! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
Our Regina George Patron Saint candle is lit for this episode, and the Mean Girls references are flowing. And seriously guys, Mean Girls applies to everything. And this Thursday, “everything” includes a little bit of girl power and a discussion about feminism and the best advice we’ve gotten as women. We also channel our inner Oprah and discuss some of our favorite things, and last but not least, The Open! You guys! How is it only one week away?! Excuse us, we have some minor panicking to do. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
This week’s Q&A edition covers your questions about how to support a partner with anxiety, how to build confidence under the bar and finally nail your double-unders, our favorite (ok, Joy’s favorite) Sephora products, Claire’s tips for maternity workout wear, the secret to Joy’s amazing legging game, and way more. We just love Q&A episodes (because we LOVE to hear your questions!), and this one might be our best yet! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
It’s time for another good ole fashioned catch-up sesh! So get ready to hear about beauty routines, cardio (let’s be honest, the reason we all do CrossFit is because straight cardio is HARD, seriously), job searching, and a few well-placed baby noises. We also discuss the idea of holding onto “skinny” clothes–is it motivational, or does it keep you from accepting your body as it is? Also, would you rather have lunch with Tina Fey, or Bob Harper? Joy is stumped. I mean, it’s a tough call. Who would you pick? Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO http://qalo.com
We could not be more thrilled to have Andie Mitchell on the podcast this week! Ever since Joy read the memoir, NYT best-seller It Was Me All Along, she can’t stop talking about the amazing Andie Mitchell. Have you seen Andie’s TED Talk? Watch it. Have you checked out her blog andiemitchell.com? Go there now! Oh wait, listen to this podcast episode first! You’ll fall in love with her just like we did! Andie talks about her books (including a new cookbook available in March!), her 135 pound weight loss journey, her perspective on black-and-white thinking, and what we all can do to live in the “middle”. It’s an hour packed with incredible honesty and Andie’s pure positive vibes! AND a story about meeting Leonardo DiCaprio. What! IknowRight. So much goodness in one episode. By the end of the hour it almost made Claire a hugger. Almost. Enjoy! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO.COM
Holy crap, the 2016 CrossFit Games season is almost here! Which means it’s time to talk about the ghost of Opens past and throw out our guesses for what we’ll see this year. Triple-unders anyone? But first we catch up with the basics of Claire’s ongoing postpartum CrossFit adventures and Joy’s deep love of carbs, and talk about how we approach big life decisions and quell the ever-present Anxiety Girl who is still alive and well on the back-burner (and sometimes on the front-burner… is that how you say that?) at all times. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
Dave Spitz, owner of Cal Strength and one of the country’s foremost weightlifting coaches, has teamed up with Nicole Lim to create Train Heroic, the first science-based, women-specific olympic lifting program of its kind… So of course we needed to hear all about it! Dave and Nicole have seriously done their homework, and the technical details behind this program are intense to say the least. And we’re not just talking about a pared-down version of a men’s program with a pink barbell on the cover–we’re talking seriously empowering, science-based training methodology that miiight involve the word menses (you’ve been warned). PS, Wait, are pink barbells a thing? Can I get one? Please and thank you. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
This week we take our latest obsessing with counting macros to the next level, and are joined by Working Against Gravity Founder and CEO, Adee Zukier! Adee talks about why she started WAG, how she’s grown it into a program with over 1500 clients in just over a year, and lets us in on her plans for the future of her business. We also chat about her athletic background, how she has turned macro tracking into a sustainable lifestyle for almost a decade, and how you can get started without having to pay for your own personal macro coach! Happy New Year, GGW fam! 2015 was a big year for GGW. Joy got her L1, we had our 100th episode, we joined the QALO fam, we went to the CrossFit Games… oh yeah, and Claire grew a human! This week we look back on 2015, set some resolutions for 2016, and talk about how we are approaching life and goals for the new year. It’s been a fun lap around the sun and we are so honored to have shared another awesome year with you guys. Here’s to 2016… Let’s do this! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
CrossFit Seminar Staff and CrossFit Verve co-owner Courtney Shepherd is back! And don’t worry, we saw your podcast Christmas list, so we answer all your questions about programming, talk about the importance of pacing and making a game plan when you WOD, swap stories and tips for counting macros, learn about Claire’s introduction to parkour, and even get a little taste (ok, kind of a big taste) of Mariah Carey. Because let’s be honest GGW fam: All we want for Christmas is yooooouuu! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
Christmas is almost here, 2016 is right around the corner, and we are over here counting macros with our Working Against Gravity coaches and trying to decide if we would rather shave our heads or never get a haircut again. Leg stubble, group texts, and the Thelma and Louise Half Marathon are also discussed. But most importantly: Do you always use a hook grip? Always? Like, even when you’re eating yogurt? Well, Rich Froning doesn’t. Ask me how I know. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
This week we throwback to Episode 1 and interview each other, uncovering the answers to lots of burning life questions, such as: If Joy could tour with any band in history, who would she pick? If Claire were to star in a reality show, what would it be about? See, these are the important things you all are dying to know about, right? We also talk about Claire’s first day of her postpartum recovery programming, Joy’s problems picking out a gift for Scott, and there are more Miles background noises than we know what to do with.
Miles James makes his podcast debut in today’s episode! He doesn’t say much, but he has to be our cutest guest to date (sorry Shane Farmer)! If you can get past the cuteness of all the baby squeaks in the background (good luck), you’ll also hear us talk about Claire’s postpartum plan to get back in the gym, plus our favorite Christmas traditions and not-so-favorite sources of holiday stress. We also find out that Joy has a secret future in competitive weightlifting… so secret that she doesn’t even know about it yet. Those power shoulders have a will of their own, what can we say? Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
If you missed Claire as much as Joy did you’ll really enjoy this episode! Claire is back in the studio this week and we jump right in to motherhood, the Turkey Challenge, and things from the 90’s. We had a lot of tangents to catch up on you guys so obvi when we start talking about Dave Castro’s hair full of secrets, don’t be alarmed. Or when we mention “Crossfit cocaine” you’ll be like, “totally normal”. When we reveal that Claire wore a bindi in jr. high because she wanted to be Gwen Stefani…..didn’t we all? We are #soblessed to have you all in the GGW tribe and we hope this episode makes your Thanksgiving a little more satisfying. Cheers and hugs to you and yours xo JC
So many articles have been floating around about body image; love our strong bodies! women are finally accepting their curves! It’s annoying and aggravating and made us realize we can complain all we want but this topic isn’t going anywhere. We decided to bring eating disorder expert Lisa Mareb, LCSW back to the podcast to give us a refreshing perspective; let’s talk about the relationship we have with our bodies. Join us as we dive in and take more of your great questions. We learn about what we’re doing right and wrong, but most of all we realize there is a big unspoken struggle going on with us ladies. Whether we like it or not it’s time to take a look at how to finally stop using our bodies as the measure of success and focus more on living. Thank you for submitting your great questions, listeners. This is a scary topic and your vulnerability does not go unnoticed. Hope you like this episode and don’t worry, we manage to squeeze in the best Mean Girls reference to date on GGW. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO.com
Oh-EM-GEE you guys. Sam Dancer! We met Sam at the Games this summer and it was love at first sight. Sam is one of those individuals you meet and instantly feel like you’ve known them for years. He cares so deeply about fitness and improving lives, and you’ll hear all about it on this week’s show! We talk about mental game, how Sam screens members for his gym, and mood-changing shellac polish. It’s Sam, would you expect anything less? It’s a one-of-a-kind interview for GGW Podcast, you won’t want to miss this one! Support the podcast by supporting QALO! Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook!
This week we get an extra special update from Claire! What’s it like being a new mom? She tells us all about it and then we start talking about Hunger Games and, is this what sleep deprivation sounds like? “OK irregardless”, it feels good to be back on the mic with Claire. We pre-recorded a great interview with Shane Farmer (CFL1 and CF Rowing Seminar Staff) for you! A collegiate athlete and 4x CrossFit Games team athlete, Shane has mastered the art of working hard and smart and knows what it takes to reach the highest levels of competition. Throughout his career Shane has always been surrounded by the greatest minds in the world of coaching. Olympic weightlifting, rowing, mindset, programming. All of the people he’s met throughout his career have molded the way he views and trains performance. His beliefs have led him to the desire to support ANYONE who has a passion to improve their life and he builds his coaching accordingly. It’s a very special interview with 2-time CF Games athlete Jenny LaBaw. You guys, she just ran 500 miles in the Colorado mountains to raise funds for epilepsy. That’s a lot of miles and a lot of mental game. Jenny tells us all about the experience and also opens up about her personal journey being diagnosed with epilepsy at 8 years old. Catch her entire journey at LaBawLife.com where you can also donate to her fundraising campaign. Let’s help her reach her goal of $50,000 for the Epilepsy Foundation!
Claire might still be waiting on her marathon (yep guys, she’s STILL pregnant), but Joy completed her (actual literal) marathon this past weekend, and let’s just say it lived up to her expectations. Running 26.2 miles is no easy feat, and Joy goes into the details of her training, the race, her marathon spirit animal, how she recovered afterwards, and the realization that long distance running might just not be her jam anymore. Of course we also get an update on Claire’s never-ending pregnancy, and even try to catch up on some pop culture. It might involve some Glee sing-a-long time… and we’re not sorry. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
Joy’s running a marathon this weekend, Claire’s still pregnant, and John Hay has a sixth sense for finding Delilah on nighttime radio… What else do you need to know? Ok, obviously we are never that succinct (which is why you love us… right?), and this week we also talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly of coaching cues, how to tell if you’re setting realistic goals, and why the problem with “body positivity” is that it acts like it wants to shift the conversation while still keeping the focus squarely on our bodies. Not cool, guys. PS, don’t forget to check us out on Harder to Kill Radio Episode 23 this week! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
Who doesn’t love a classic J&C Q&A? Because we sure do! But first thing’s first: Joy watched the Froning movie (swoon), and if you’re looking for a quick shot of CrossFit Kool-aid, you might want to watch it too. Then it’s back to the basics with our favorite pieces of game-changing CrossFit gear and a recap of our workouts from the past week (ok, Joy’s workouts and Claire’s dreams about workouts). We also chat about clean & jerk PRs and what happens if you suddenly realize your gainz are getting a little too… gainzey. Is that a word? Well, it is now. Just go with it.
This week’s episode is all about the F word: FEAR. Our biggest fears, our silliest fears, our deepest darkest fears… and YOUR biggest fears, too. From failure to disappointment to spiders, fear is natural, but it can rule our lives if we’re not careful. Joy puts on her therapist headband (and Claire even gets an honorary therapist hat for a few minutes), and we dive into coping with fears, rationalizing them, and living with them for better or worse. This week we are excited to welcome Sarah Pierce to GGW! Sarah is a legit OG CrossFitter–y’know, the type who has done Fran at The Ranch in Asics running shoes. Because obviously. In this episode we hear all about Sarah’s transitions from casual CrossFitter, to Regionals competitor, to GRID League athlete, and everything in-between–including her nutrition tips for where to begin if you want to “dial in” your diet, and supersecret behind-the-scenes info about what happens when you’re at a judge at The Games. There might even be a #crossfitvan moment or two… You’ve been warned. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
Birthdays, half marathons, preggo WODs, and teeny bikinis–there’s just so much to talk about this week! Joy is back from Hawaii, and it’s time to hear about how she used CrossFit to train for the Kauai Half Marathon–and most of all about all the #marriagehacks it takes to survive traveling with a spouse who travels for a living. We grapple with some tough questions, like why and how young teenagers get away with wearing Brazilian bikinis on family vacations and what the term “fun run” even means. And we finally find out what baby names are under consideration for Baby Koch… Spoiler alert: You are going to love them (and if you don’t, we don’t want to hear about it). Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
This episode is a little bit of a love letter to CrossFit. But we don’t love to WOD because we love burpees, or hand rips, or being so sore we can barely walk (although we do kind of love those things, let’s be honest). It’s because there’s something about this crazy sport that teaches us about ourselves and the world around us in a way that nothing else can. So this week we talk about what CrossFit has taught us, and learn the things that CrossFit has taught our listeners, too. Oh, and it’s JOY’S BIRTHDAY!!! So we obviously talk about that, too. Yay CrossFit and Happy Birthday Joy!! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
Ok, so summer isn’t officially over yet, but with the start of September we can’t help but start thinking about fall! Fall means boots, scarves, pink glitter trench coats (ok, maybe that’s just Joy), and being able to run outside during a WOD without getting heat stroke… what’s not to love? But sometimes the transition into cooler weather can mean watching your motivation cool off a little bit, too. So in this episode we talk about our strategies for staying motivated as the seasons change and set some goals for the next few months, plus hear about Joy’s muscle-up journey and Claire’s continuing adventures with preggo CrossFitting. It seems like it’s been forever since we had a good gab sesh, so this week it’s time to play catch-up with our lives! Claire is finally moved in to her new apartment (mostly), Joy is mourning the fact that she chose a vacation to Hawaii over Taylor Swift tickets (SUCH a hard life!), and we finally hear the John Hay croissant story. This episode is also chock-full of tips for pacing, our favorite and least favorite benchmark WODs, recommendations for weightlifting belts, and lots of tangents. As always, because that’s why you love us. Right? Ok great. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
Emily Abbott is a 2-time CrossFit Games competitor from Calgary, and it was love at first sight when we saw her walk onto the floor at the Games! Maybe it’s her red hair, the abundance of Instagram pics of her in viking costumes, or maybe it’s the fact that her intense work ethic radiates off her from a mile away. Either way, we are thrilled to have her on the podcast this week! We ask Emily all about how she got into CrossFit, what it’s like to compete in Carson, and how she went from 35th place at the 2014 Games to a Top 10 finish in 2015. Hint: Pizza, ice cream, and going commando might be factors. Just saying. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
Steph “the Hammer” Hammerman is the world’s first CFL2 with Cerebral Palsy, a founding member of a group of adaptive CrossFit athletes known as the “Wheelchair Gang,” and basically an all-around badass. And we could not be more excited to get to chat with her this week! Everyone who has met Steph will tell you she is known for her outgoing attitude, her brutal WODs, and her ability to call you out on your BS… which may or may not happen a few times on this episode, as a matter of fact! We also talk about how CrossFit has helped Steph redefine her mission to bring athletics to the adaptive community, her best tips for new CrossFitters, her advice for coaching adaptive athletes, and why showing up every day with an Rx effort is more important than “Rx-ing” a WOD could ever be. How do we love Juli Bauer… Let us count the ways! Juli is back this week to talk about her new cookbook, Juli Bauer’s Paleo Cookbook! She says that if her first cookbook was her high school diploma, and her second cookbook was her college degree, then this one is her Master’s thesis. But writing a cookbook isn’t all frosting samples and bloody mary tastings, and she lets us in on the behind-the-scenes details of what it’s really like to spend a year pouring your heart into a project like this one. And of course, we can’t help but catch up on Juli’s life, upcoming wedding plans, her new house, and find out her pick for the best margaritas in Denver! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
Spandex, peg boards, ice cream sandwiches, and Julie Foucher… CrossFitLand was everything we hoped it would be and more, and we might be in denial that it’s over. This week we recap our awesome experience at the 2015 CrossFit Games, complete with a rundown of CF celebs we rubbed elbows with, and a certain CF celeb who we maybe just took a creepy picture of the back of his head a instead. We also chat a bit about the decision to program “Murph” in the middle of the summer SoCal heat, and what elements like the peg board represent for CrossFit athletes everywhere. Now, who’s ready for the 2016 Games?! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
It’s time to catch up on Joy and Claire’s lives–and oh who am I kidding… Have you heard?? Ohmygosh ohmygosh… We’re headed to the CrossFit Games this week and we might be just a TINY bit excited! This week we do hear a little bit about Claire’s epic battle with the stomach flu on moving day, and Joy’s escapades on Emmy night. But for the most part we talk about what we’re going to do (and Bob Harper) and who we’re going to meet (and Bob Harper) and what we’re going to buy (and… ok, Joy, it’s time to move on from Bob Harper now…) at the CrossFit Games this weekend! We can’t frickin wait and we hope to see you there if you’re going to be in Carson! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
This week we are joined by one of our favorite fitness bloggers, Tina from Carrots ‘N Cake! Tina is a CrossFitter, distance runner, and new mom, who somehow also finds time for boot camp and even Soul Cycle (much to Joy’s excitement). This gal does it all, and we couldn’t be more excited to get to know her better this week! In this episode, Tina shares her tips for balancing her crazy schedule with the realities of trying to keep a healthy lifestyle, plus answers to all of your questions about fueling for long runs vs. WODs, her upcoming fitness goals, and even some tips for learning to love running. And of course, Mean Girls quotes and even a few #marriagehacks!
Time for a nice little Q&A sesh with Joy and Claire! This week we talk about the GGW Better You Challenge (sold out in 24 hours #sofamous #nobigdeal) and answer listener questions. What instagram accounts do we follow? What is the 411? What is the hot gossip? No shortage of Mean Girls quotes here, you guys #AsUsual. Joy talks about her recent trip to AZ, Claire gets up to speed on grad school, and holy crap it’s almost time for the CrossFit Games!? Claire shares awesome pro tips if you’re headed to the Stub Hub Center. Don’t miss this episode. Joy finishes Ep105 by putting on her therapy headband (it’s a thing) and getting #allthefeels. You can bet your Nanos it makes Claire really uncomfortable. Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
This week we welcome Mom Sandy back for an encore of Episode 101! This week we go even deeper into the details of how non-alphas can communicate successfully with alphas, and how alphas can anticipate the needs of the non-alphas in their lives. We put on our advice column hats and talk advanced marriage hacks, and Sandy shares her experiences and tips for succeeding in a new relationship after a long-term relationship or marriage has ended. And of course, Sandy answers your follow-up questions regarding alphas, betas, introverts, extroverts, yellows, blues, and everything in-between! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com
In honor of Father’s Day, this week’s episode starts off with the best advice we’ve ever received from John Hay and Ronnie Zee… plus the best advice we’ve gotten from our moms, teachers, friends, and random internet celebrities. Which quickly turns into a discussion about life stages, and what life stage chat would be complete without an update on Claire’s pregnancy and her preggo CrossFit diaries. We also talk about the upcoming Better You Challenge, get thoroughly distracted by the Periscope live feed going on in the background, and even weigh in on Rich Froning’s latest modeling gig for Relentless Jeans. It’s finally time to revisit the one issue that has been both the subject of one of our most popular episodes, and the hardest topic to really talk about: Anxiety. With a capital A. We want to make sure you all know that it’s not just muscle-up progressions and donuts around here, and just because it’s been almost 2 years since we last talked about our anxiety issues, that doesn’t mean they have gone away. And we especially want you to know that if you deal with anxiety, you are not alone. In this episode we talk about what anxiety looks like in our lives right now, and what strategies we–and our awesome listeners–are using to manage it. [First of all: Please note that our Qalo 15% off discount code has changed. It is not “GirlsGoneWOD” as advertised in this episode; it is now “GGW” – Thanks!] Our famous “Podcast Mom” Sandy finally makes her on-air debut this week with the answer to life’s most serious question: What is the difference between men and women anyway? Among her many (many) talents, Sandy has a degree in Sexology (yep, that’s a thing), and in this episode we talk all about the dynamic between men and women, introverts and extroverts, and alphas and non-alphas (including how to tell whether you’re an alpha, and what to do about it). So get ready, because no matter which category you fall into, you will learn something about yourself and about your relationships in this episode! We made it! Episode 100 is here! We had SO much fun recording this episode in front of a live audience of friends, family, and best of all… YOU! We start by hearing from some of our favorite past guests, including Lisa from the eating disorder episodes, CrossFit staff member and CrossFit Verve co-owner Courtney Shepherd, and of course, Super Fan Chris G! We cover our most memorable podcast moments, talk about what we’ve learned along the way in the last 100 weeks, and reveal some exciting news about the future of GGW. You guys, we’re still in shock that we’ve made it this far! We would never have made it without the support of our amazing GGW fam, and so this episode is really dedicated to you. Thank you for everything and here’s to 100 more! Girls Gone WOD Podcast is sponsored by QALO. http://qalo.com/
It’s time to party like it’s Episode 99! We can’t believe we’ve almost made it to the triple digits, and to celebrate we do a lot of giggling and Claire lets us in on a big secret: She had her gender ultrasound last night, and it’s a… (well, you’re just going to have to listen and find out)!! Then we talk about the California Regionals, how awesome it was to watch Brooke Ence kick butt, and why the long-sleeve crop top is a thing. Which leads us to our favorite booty short recommendations for your summer booty, which we all know is a very important topic. Because spandex. Obviously.
We are back with another classic J&C episode, discussing the important things… like what the heck are we going to wear to our 100th episode party, and should we have a guest book, or a photo booth? We also talk about last weekend’s South and Atlantic Regionals, how crazy it is that an 18-year old is going to the Games, and our thoughts about Sam Briggs’ decision to compete on a broken foot. Oprah even makes an appearance (well, sort of) with her list of Things to Master Before You Turn 40, in which we learn that Joy has never been to a sex store… and if you listen closely, you can even hear her blushing through the microphone.
Can’t get enough of Lisa and Nathalia’s wisdom? Don’t worry we can’t either. This week these two incredible eating disorder experts join the podcast again to answer listener questions and tackle the topics most struggle with but are too afraid to talk about. Lisa is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Nathalia is a Registered Dietician, both work at an intensive inpatient eating disorder treatment center. Please email girlsgonewod@gmail.com if you or a loved one struggle with an eating disorder. We will put you in touch with Lisa and Nathalia’s treatment facility. And while this episode is more on the serious side of life, we do mention glitter poop and prove that we’re also eternally twelve.
Two Crossfit powerhouse women in one GGW episode!? Our heads almost exploded. Consider this your warning. Go drink some coffee and do a few burpees before you listen to this episode. Eat a donut while you’re at it. Your body will burn all-the-carbs just by listening to Cherie and Nicole talk about Crossfit, the Open, Nicole Carroll, food, ruts, and mobile homes exploding. Hey, we WARNED YOU. It was an honor to spend the evening with two women who know Crossfit like they do. We hope you enjoy their awesomeness as much as we did. P.S. Yes, Claire reminds Cherie about the gravy pinata.
This week it’s another classic Joy-and-Claire-laugh-a-thon episode. I mean, let’s just get this out of the way right now; Joy used to wear a J-Lo denim jumpsuit in her 20’s AND is still attached to a denim DKNY trench coat that she can’t bear to get rid of. Which leads us to the topic of body image, because you kind of have to think of yourself a certain way in order to pull off a denim jumpsuit right? And speaking of thinking about ourselves, why is Instagram the land of naked butts and pulled-up shirt selfies these days? Or are we just being prudes? Why don’t we just stab Ceasar? Anyway. Claire gives us updates on her adorable growing human and what she thinks about women who post their entire pregnancy on Facebook. We also cover goal setting and share some listener secrets to staying motivated (inspirational quotes alert) as well as Joy’s recent yoga experience that made her question her entire life’s existence. Okay maybe not that extreme, but it did make us realize we’re all normal, weird, and trying to figure this life thing out together. Namaste.
This week we are excited to have CrossFit Seminar staff and co-owner of CrossFit Verve, Courtney Shepherd, on the podcast! This gal is spunky and hilarious, and most of all loves her some CrossFit. Courtney gives us the inside scoop on her journey from firefighter to affiliate owner, and confirms what Joy and Claire already suspected–that the best part of being on CF Seminar staff is all the free shirts. Ok, maybe not the best thing, buuut it’s pretty close. We also talk about coaching styles, finding a balance between correcting athletes but not overwhelming them, the importance of mental tenacity, and the best piece of advice Courtney has ever received as an athlete.
In case you don’t follow us on Instagram or Facebook, or if you’ve just been living under a rock… Claire’s pregnant! And we promise this won’t turn into a pregnancy podcast, but this week we just couldn’t help ourselves. In this episode, Claire talks about what her first trimester was like, what changes she’s made to her training so far, things to keep an eye out for if you’re coaching (or happen to be) a pregnant athlete, and why naps tend to trump WODs when you’re growing a human. We also talk about our next Accountable Eating Challenge and swap a few marriage hacks, including Joy admitting that she occasionally hides in the bathroom while her husband tries to tell her about his day. Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there.
This episode starts with Claire giggling before we can even get through the intro, so it’s gonna be one of those weeks. Everyone on board? Ok great. This week we talk about Joy’s first coaching experience and her triple-extension epiphany, Claire’s most recent river trip, and Claire finds out who Dave Grohl is. Then things get deep and we talk about the difference between settling and finding a routine, and ask ourselves the question, “How’s your self-esteem?” Spoiler alert: that question is a lot harder to answer than you might think.
The Open is over and we are back to our regularly scheduled programming! Whew! This week, we talk all about Joy’s experience at the Level 1 seminar, including that time she met Camille and everything was amazing because Camille. I mean really. We also talk about goals for the summer, Claire continues to come to terms with how little she’s been able to get to the gym lately, and Joy gets some tips for getting comfortable as a new coach. Tip #1: Don’t be that guy who forgets to bring the donuts to the weekly coaches’ meeting. You’ll find out why.
We’re back this week with Leah West to say goodbye to the 2015 CrossFit Open and discuss 15.5, including Leah’s advice for getting through this WOD: Just pick up the frickin barbell! We talk about how this year’s Open has differed from what we expected, and why nobody should ever have to do 14 minutes of wall balls and single unders ever again. We also talk about mental toughness, and get Leah’s take on the age-old question of what to do if your partner doesn’t love CrossFit as much as you do (or at all). Oh yeah, and Leah is sitting in first place in Puerto Rico going into the last week of the Open, so that’s also pretty amazing. Go Leah and good luck to everyone on 15.5!
This week’s episode is half-brought to you from Moab, Utah, while Claire enjoys the last spring break of her life. Which, by the way, is an excellent reason to go back to grad school. Just saying. Anyway, the Open is more than halfway done, and it’s no secret that we are ready for it to be over so we can get our lives–and our normal Friday workouts–back. In this episode, we also answer lots of listener questions, like tips for pull-up and ring dip progressions, how to get over mental blocks, whether or not you should use a lifting belt, and how many kindergarteners we could take in a fight. And just for the record, that was an actual listener question. You weirdos. We love ya.
Can we all just have a moment of appreciation that we finally got to give this name to an episode? Ok great. This week we tackle what to do when your box starts to resemble the cafeteria at North Shore High School a little too closely. Because it’s normal to bond with the athletes you see on a regular basis, but when it turns into a clique, your safe space for working out can quickly become a drama minefield. We also rehash 15.2 and admit that we are already kind of over the Open, which I’m pretty sure happened after 14.2 last year, too… So maybe we’re just over C2B pull-ups. Yeah, that’s probably it.
Maddie Berky is back this week and we are so excited to have her! In this episode, we discuss the Open (because really, the limit does not exist for how crazy everyone is about the Open), how 15.1 went, our predictions for 15.2, and Maddie makes us super jealous about her recent trip to Kauai, but talks about how important it is to not feel guilty if (ok, WHEN) you stray from your “normal” eating habits on vacation. We also talk about changing our internal dialogues, and about how life would be different if we all lived our lives with the belief that we’re 10s instead of 8s or 9s. Because let’s be honest, you’re all 10s in our book.
The Open is here! The Open is here! Holy Rich Froning and Mathew Fraser!! Wasn’t that amazing??? Were you freaking out as much as we were watching the announcement? Those T2B, those deadlifts, those…..Oh wait there’s an episode we have to get to here! This week we are joined by the strong, lovely Leah West as we break down 15.1 and talk shop about this year’s Open season. If you’re looking for tips on how to handle the first Open WOD look no further. We discuss how to handle competing and how to pace yourself during killer WODs like we’ll see in the next 5 weeks. Phew!! The nerves are starting already….and we love it. This is Crossfit!!
The Open countdown has officially begun! And by that we mean we’re stalking the Crossfit pros more regularly…OMG Lauren Fisher could you be any cuter. Which then leads us to talking about turning 21, which then leads us to talking about the first time we drank alcohol. In other words, all of this Open talk is making us want to drink. We talk about preparing for your first competition, what to do if you are having issues at your gym and how to confront those issues, and how to handle the whole my-partner-isn’t-as-healthy-as-I-am-HELP situation (spoiler alert: it doesn’t involve something fun like going to Taco Bell). One week from now we’ll be celebrating another Open season!! Are you ready?
We’re back with a good ole classic Joy & Claire episode! This week we tackle a tough question about how to promote self-love to all body types while still acknowledging that being severely overweight is a major factor of many serious health problems. But first we start off with some talk about 2015 CrossFit Games Open–which, believe it or not, is only 2 weeks away!–and talk about why Joy is already all signed up but Claire is sitting it out. We also reminisce about Valentine’s Day in elementary school, and that one time that Joy dedicated a Debbie Gibson song to her 4th grade boyfriend on the radio. And don’t worry, Claire’s track record of not knowing female artists from the 80s doesn’t disappoint; she doesn’t know who Debbie Gibson is, either.
We could not be more psyched to welcome Emily Schromm to GGW this week! Emily began her fitness journey after having her lifelong body image issues thrown into the spotlight on MTV’s The Real World, and has used personal training and CrossFit to finally craft the lifestyle, athletic abilities, and community that she always wanted. She is now a CFL1 and competitive CrossFit athlete, creator of Unleashed Fitness and the 21-Day Superhero Challenge, and was recently named Women Health Magazine’s Next Fitness Star! In this episode, we talk about the ways CrossFit has changed Emily’s body image and confidence, her goals for the future of her CrossFit career, and about her cat, Gryffindor, who has six toes. We also discuss her upcoming 21-Day Superhero Challenge, starting on February 22nd. Are you in? Because we are!
This week it’s all about recovery and Claire’s favorite word….YOGA! Stephanie Ring from Endure Yoga created a program just for Crossfitters and you are going to want to listen very carefully. Mobility is life. Life is mobility. Or something like that. Stephanie’s goal by the end of this hour was to convince Claire she really is good at yoga. And we sort of made progress because Claire was sitting in pigeon pose in her skinny jeans during the last few minutes of the show. Joy inquires about poses for tight hips from all of her years of running. Stephanie shares her secrets about stretching vs yoga and how we can incorporate this in to our workout routine even with the busiest of schedules. For those of you who rush in to the gym, throw down a tough WOD, and quickly rush out (hellloooo, all of you) you might want to re-think that strategy. Your body will thank you and so will your friends who no longer have to listen to you whine about how sore you are. Winner winner chicken dinner.
Get ready to swoon, because this episode is filled to the brim with nothing but love for all things CrossFit! This week we answer (almost) all of your CrossFit questions once and for all with CrossFit Roots Owner, CrossFit Seminar Staff, Certified CrossFit Coach, and overall CrossFit OG Nicole Christensen! Have you ever wondered whether taking the CrossFit Level 1 would be right for you? What’s the difference between a L1, L2, L3, and L4 certification? What the heck is going on with the new Open and Regionals rules? Is it ok to CrossFit while you’re pregnant? Where should you start if you want to dial in your diet once and for all? How can you keep the spark alive in your relationship with CrossFit over the years? And finally, how many hashtags is too many hashtags? (Hint: The limit does not exist!)
It has been a hectic week in GGW Land, with Joy experiencing a death in the family and Claire starting her second semester of grad school. So, obviously, the conversation quickly turns to facials and manicures, and the importance of some good “Me Time” every once in a while. This week, we also talk about Claire’s adventures in ice climbing and how CrossFit has helped her mentally prepare for hanging over the edge of an icy cliff while holding sharp pointy ice axes, and talk about motivation, our new favorite WOD fashion trends, and, of course, Rich Froning’s biceps.
It’s another episode of GGW Q&A with Joy and Claire! Where we answer your burning questions like, “Joy, in a past life were you a My Little Pony?” Which the answer to that is a resounding DUH. We cover everything from pre-workout fuel to what our husbands do for a living. And then we stop to rant about Mark Sisson’s crazy insane body and how he’s a robot and….why can’t we just eat donuts and get along? Joy gets weird about sharing what she eats in a day, Claire opens up about her short stint of living in Vermont. We cry a little bit about how this time of year is super depressing, and then Claire gets weird about feelings and we learn that she is NOT a hugger. Joy’s new job rules, Claire starts school in a week. Holy crap this year is off to a bang!! P.S. We love you. Let’s do this 2015!
Happy New Year! It’s time to recap 2014 and look forward to 2015… and also to explain to Joy what a Power Hour is, find out the truth about Claire’s first year of marriage, and remember fondly all of the deep fried deviled eggs and Hawaiian poke we ate. We talk about the pros and cons of setting New Year’s Resolutions, and set a few ourselves (guided, of course, by Lauren Conrad). We also clarify the evolution of Claire’s “off-season” and answer listener questions about what to do if you want to start CrossFit but can’t join a gym for financial or geographical (or really any other) reasons. We hope you have a great 2015, GGW Fam… and we hope it starts with this episode!
Merry Christmas! In this episode, eating disorder experts, Nathalia, a Registered Dietitian, and Lisa, a Certified Social Worker, join us again to talk about all things digestion, and, well… poop! We talk about the myth that your body can only absorb “so much” protein, about whether or not kombucha and other fermented foods are really necessary, and what you can tell about your body by taking a peek before you flush every once in a while. We also talk about whether CrossFit is a healthy choice for people who are actively recovering from an eating disorder. We really didn’t plan to release an episode about poop on Christmas, but that’s just the way the cards fell, and we’re not sorry. And I mean really, would you expect anything less?
We are so excited to welcome Kill Cliff athlete Brooke Ence on the podcast this week! You may know Brooke as “that girl” who was in all the 2014 Open demo videos… but now you know her as that badass who was on GGW (that’s how this works, right?)! In this episode, we learn all about Brooke: including her love for modern dance, how she went from 120th place in the Open in 2012 to 6th place at Regionals in 2014, and her hopes for her future as a CrossFit athlete and ambassador. Brooke talks about why lifting weights and doing hard things in general is important for women, and tells us what it’s like to run a 5k with your arm in a sling. Which reminds me… we totally have dibs on Brooke for our zombie apocalypse team. Just saying.
We are so excited to have Steph Gaudreau from Stupid Easy Paleo with us again this week! Steph is a serious fountain of knowledge when it comes to Paleo, CrossFit, and spending time with a heavy barbell, and in this episode we talk all about the importance of weightlifting for women, and about the physiological reasons why lifting can be way better for your hormones, brain, muscles, and body composition goals than cardio–especially if you’re a chick. We also talk about her upcoming book, The Performance Paleo Cookbook; what makes it different from her other books, and why you are probably gonna want to add it to your shelf. And if you missed it, don’t forget to listen to Episode 62 to hear her first appearance on GGW!
It’s a little bit of everything you love about GGW! But only if you’re a die hard listener otherwise you’re probably wondering who spiked our Kill Cliff. This week we sit down to recap our Thanksgiving holiday, Claire’s birthday celebration, Joy’s last day of work, and Claire’s never ending studying schedule. We cover some Crossfit, we answer a listener question, and we dive in to talking about tracking macros without Joy’s head exploding. In fact, she might even do it for like, a day. Settle in and hold on folks, we do not disappoint in the bunny-trail-movie-quotes-hilarious-laughter department this week.
Happy Thanksgiving, GGW fam! We are thankful for you! In this episode, we once again expound upon the virtues of gravy, talk about our family’s most hoarded Thanksgiving recipes, and about the fact that pie is way better for breakfast. We also take a few listener questions, and talk about plateaus, favorite beauty products, would-you-rathers, and that one time that Claire went into Sephora by herself for the first time and it felt like a cosmetics Ellis Island. We hope you listen to this while enjoying lots of gravy and/or whipped cream, and hopefully not while trying to avoid your in-laws. But hey, it happens.
You know that feeling of going crazy because someone else thinks you’re acting crazy? Call it a self-fulfilling prophecy, but as women, we get it all the time. You must be overreacting because you’re PMS’ing, right? In this episode, we debunk that myth, and air some grievances about what it’s like to have your feelings invalidated, no matter the reason. We also talk about Claire’s CrossFit offseason, Joy’s icy hot addiction, and our favorite modifications for push-ups (hint: they aren’t called “girl” push-ups either).
In this week’s episode, we are joined by Certified Fascial Stretch Therapist and Functional Movement Professional Dina Kudlicki, who you might remember as the women who changed Claire’s life–and hips–forever at Girls Gone Rx. We grill Dina about what the heck functional movement is anyway, the best ways to mobilize your hips and back, and she even gives us some tips about how to tell whether your back pain or knee pain is actually caused by problems in totally other parts of your body. Which is how we find out that heel bone’s connected to the… forehead bone? Who knew!
This week we are excited to answer all your rowing questions with Elevation Rowing founder, Paleo Girl in the City blogger, and CrossFit Verve coach, Maddie Berky! Maddie is a former collegiate rower whose motto is “Rowing is hard enough, no need to make it worse!” and in this episode, we go over the most common issues she sees during rowing WODs, and talk about a few simple drills to make sure you aren’t committing any rowing faux pas. And of course, Maddie tells all about how she found CrossFit and Paleo, and she even brought us pumpkin biscuits! PS, be sure not to miss the accompanying Rowing Basics video on our YouTube Channel! PS, the URL for the Youtube Rowing video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_ftbnUAsuw
Mercury retrograde is finally over, and the birth canal and cave of wisdom are back big time. Joy announces a big life change that’s been a year in the making, and we finally Google “Mercury in Retrograde” to figure out what the heck that even means. We also talk about CrossFit Halloween costumes, hips and squats, and celebrate JT’s one year anniversary of being Joy’s dog. And as his part of the celebration, JT drops a major dog fart bomb in the middle of the episode, which is always appreciated. Thanks, buddy.
A whole (almost) hour of actually talking about CrossFit? Believe it! In this episode, Claire talks about what she’s learned from the past 6 months of coaching, Joy discusses what coaching styles work for her, and we agree that this sport can get a little messy, but that’s why we love it! We also remind ourselves about the awesome mind-clearing benefits of a grueling WOD, which you just can’t get from a hamstring extension machine. Last but not least, a giant earwig tries to crawl up the back of Claire’s head in the middle of the episode… We edited out most of the screaming, but still. Ew.
In this week’s episode we recap Joy’s recent competition and how Claire forgot about it and ended up in Moab instead. We discuss the crazy fears associated with doing scary things like rope climbs and realize that, you guys duh, Crossfit is hard. Joy recovers from her competition with a trip to Lulu. Claire is up to her neck in grad school homework. We update you on our 2nd Accountable Eating Challenge and remind each other that this isn’t The Whole 30, so calm down if you’re obsessing over a piece of fruit, go back and listen to episode 66 with Lisa and Nathalia. Finally, we talk about your first time watching Mean Girls. Which then leads to talking about first times……of….doing stuff. And then we change the subject faster than you can say Camille Leblanc-Bazinet.
Amy/Lisa, LCSW is back! And this week she brought her registered dietician co-worker, Nathalia, with her! A shrink and a dietician in a room together. You might think things are very serious and depressing in this episode. But like Aaron Samuels, you’re wrong. So wrong. Lisa and Nathalia are delightful and while we know this topic is extremely serious and heavy, we still get sidetracked by Claire’s amazing glitter nails. You, listeners, brought your honest and real questions. Lisa and Nathalia do not disappoint in their responses and advice. Joy has multiple Oprah ah-ha moments (MOAHMs). It’s an episode you do not want to miss! (Please email us at girlsgonewod@gmail.com if you’d like referral information to Lisa and Nathalia’s eating disorder treatment center).
From 400m sprints and tutus to the most quad destroying WOD ever, we had another amazing experience at this year’s Girls Gone Rx competition, and in this episode we recap every awesome and sweaty (and sometimes painful) moment… and talk about how hard it is to go down stairs right now. The struggle is real, people! And now that the comp is over and fall is here, it’s time to re-visit our summer goals, including having to convince Joy that seeing a concert outdoors doesn’t count as hiking, and set some fall goals. Like to eat more pumpkin things. That’s a good goal, right? Pumpkin spice up your life, guys!
An episode where we actually talk about Crossfit? What? Who are we? The Barbells for Boobs competition is finally here! Joy and Claire talk about the upcoming competition WODs and reminisce about last year’s B4B event. Will we win the fundraiser again this year??? We also dive in to Joy’s past with roller derby…um, what? I know right. There’s a little (a lot) bit of Taylor Swift talk, a little bit of butterfly pullup talk, and we even answer a few of your burning J&C questions. Did we mention Shake It Off? Because you better get ready to…..
It’s catch up time! Claire and Joy talk about Hawaii, birthdays, and the kombucha beads Claire bought Joy for turning 37. We also discuss the beauty of Pinterest but decide that social media is sucking away our lives, so we do something pretty drastic LIVE on the podcast. Dun dun dunnnnnnn! The Girls Gone Rx competition is coming up (you have a week left to donate!!) and we have new costume ideas, Joy plays Claire the best song ever, and we pretty much don’t disappoint in the girl-talk-randomness department. We love you, too.
This week we are excited to chat with Steph from Stupid Easy Paleo! Steph lets us in on how to sort through all of the paleo advice out there and pick the approach that’s right for you, her favorite protein packed on-the-go breakfast ideas, not to mention some of the best advice we’ve heard for how to reach body composition goals even when your hormones are crazy. We also chat about her ebook The Paleo Athlete and her upcoming cookbook The Performance Paleo Cookbook! From science teacher, to bike racer, to Regionals athlete, to author, entrepreneur, and Paleo celeb… this lady has had a busy couple of years, and we spend this episode picking her brain about just about all of it!
This week we are excited and privileged to be joined by eating disorder expert Lisa, who not only works in an inpatient clinic for adults with severe eating disorders, but also happens to be one of Joy’s closest friends! Lisa sits down with us (on the floor, obviously) and gives us real answers to questions like how to know when your otherwise healthy eating habits are crossing over into disordered eating, how to balance the realities of emotional and social factors in your diet, what a “normal” relationship with food should feel like, and lots more. So much more, in fact, that this is our longest episode ever. But we think you’ll agree that it’s worth it.
Lindsey Marcelli, co-owner of CrossFit Eminence and founder of the Girls Gone Rx competition, is back! In this episode, we chat about Lindsey’s big decision to take Girls Gone Rx nationwide to spread the CrossFit love and raise money for breast cancer awareness and research. And as one of the most accomplished female coaches we know, we also pick Lindsey’s brain about how to approach your first WOD as a newbie CrossFitter, and how to approach your first competition when you’re ready for something new. And be sure to check out www.girlsgonerx.com to see if there’s a Girls Gone Rx competition coming to a box near you!
