Each week the Back to the Film lads sit down to chat about a different film. Back to the Film is hosted by Adam Piper, Rob Sentence, Blue Benson and Oliver Burt. In each episode we discuss a movie and each give our take on the good and bad points. We all have very different tastes in films and what makes a good movie often leading to tenuously related topics being covered. Basically its a light hearted look at different movies during which the hosts often have to be reminded to go Back to the Film! This episode we take a look at two films both of which are comedies with vastly different ways of getting their laughs. Dolemite is my name stars Eddie Murphy who doesn't disappoint in his performance and as you would expect the language is very colourful!
Ladies first stars Sacha Baron Cohen, Rosamund Pike, Fiona Shaw and Charles Dance amongst other well known British actors. This gets its laughs from the alternate reality that the main characters find them selves in!

This week we take a look at two classic films to judge if the stand the test of time. The Wild Geese 1978 is based on a novel of the same name by Daniel Carney. It's a British war movie and reflects the tone of the times. Starring Richard Burton, Roger Moore, Richard Harris and a host of other familiar actors it follows a group of mercenaries as they attempt to free a political prisoner.
Papillon 1973 stars Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman and is based on the memoirs of the same name by Henri Charriere. It follows the experiences of Papillon as he attempts to escape the brutal condition of the French Guiana prison he's been wrongfully sent to.

This week we take a look at the Peaky Blinders: Immortal Man a movie made to bring closure for all the Peaky Blinders fans. If you're a PB fan then you'll probably enjoy this film if your not a fan and haven't watched the series it'll be hard going! Predator Badlands is a completely different take on the Predator franchise. As a predator movie it's more of a redemption arch than an all out predator killing spree movie! Both films are well made and visually top tier but what did the lads make of the films? Listen on to find out.

This week the lads take a look at two very different film. The Inbetweeners 2011 and the hidden jem Misery 1990. The Inbetweeners is like watching an extended episode of the series and is full of cringe laughs that most of us can relate to! Misery 1990 is and absolute cult classic that won awards for Kathy Bates by the bag full. It contains a seen that once seen will stay with you for a long time!.

This week the lads took a look at two vastly different. One is very thought provoking and covers a very dark period of world history and the other isn't. Zone Of Interest enters on the Hoss family as they live next to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp and pretend to carry on with normal family life blocking out the horrors taking place behind the wall at the bottom of their garden. The Wrecking Crew is an action/thriller that just about delivers a few laughs and action moments. Zone Of Interest needs to be watched to fully grasp the message it's trying to get across The Wrecking Crew however can be on in the background and may catch your attention from time to time.

This was a first time watch for both Andy and Adam but for many it's a Christmas movie watched every year and for some it's classed as the greatest festive movie of all time. Prey went straight to streaming but on the back of its massive success paved the way for two more Trachtenberg directed offerings. This week the lads take a look at two very different films. One Life starring Johnny Flynn, Helena Bonham Carter and Anthony Hopkins tells the story of Nicholas Winton who helped organise the rescue of over 600 children from Czechoslovakia prior to the start of WW2. An inspiring film that shows how his story touched the nation on the 'Thats Life' TV show back in 1998. Andy's close family ties to Nicholas Winton make for an insightful chat.
Night With The Devil is the story of Jack Delroy played by David Dastmalchian a chat show host filming a halloween special with the aim of boosting his rating. Filming takes a sinister turn during broadcast releasing a genuine evil.

PIG on the other hand tells the story of a rather disheveled looking Nicolas Cage searching for his stolen truffle pig.

This week we take a look at two films both of which left us a bit confused as to what's going on! Downsizing has some great characters that save the film some what but jumps around and doesn't have a clear path as to what it's trying to achieve. It's a great idea for a film but did it score well? the second film was the 2025 Netflix film The Old Guard 2 which takes off where the original film ends. must admit after 30 minutes it was difficult to follow who was immortal and who wasn't! listen to hear what we thought.

In a change from the norm the lads take a look at and listen to the J.B. Priestly play An Inspector Calls. Still used as part of the GCSE English Literature exams it's a bit of a classic. Written in 1945 and based on a time period of 1912 it's a tale of the moralities of society during the time period and how people are often tenuously connected with massive cumulative affects on an individual. Is Full Metal Jacket Stanley Kubrick's best film? It has to be up there. Telling the story of a platoon of young marines during the Vietnam war. A film of two halves the first showing the brutal training involved in training for war the second half the brutal reality of being in a war situation. With competition from Platoon, Apocalypse Now and The deer Hunter for the title of best Vietnam war film it has to be in with a shout.

This week we take look at the 2024 film Carry-On. Ethan, played by Aaron Egerton, is a customs officer or as they call them in America a TSA agent who's a bit of a slacker that ends up being forced to let a bomb pass through his x-ray machine. The terrorist played by Jason Bateman really knows his stuff and everything about Ethan. The first half of the film is really quite engaging however with the introduction of god knows how many side plots looses it way eventually becoming a confusing mess! This week we take a look at the Norwegian WW11 resistance story of Gunnar Sonsteby Number 24. This is a slow burn movie that delves into the life of a resistance fighter and some of the undercover operations he took part in and organised to sabotage the Nazi occupiers.

Starring Kirsten Dunst as the jaded Lee Smith a war photographer that's at the end of her tether and Cailee Spaeny as the young aspiring photographer wanting to make a mark. This week the lads take a look at the most recent Alien franchise offering Alien Romulus. Directed by horror film master Fede Alvarez Romulus was hyped up as taking the Alien films back to their roots and being a good space horror. Whilst the film looks fantastic it doesn't quite hit the mark of some of the earlier films to be honest it cherry pics from earlier films and mashes them together. It begs the question has the franchise run its course?
We also take a look at the hidden gem of Cocaine Bear. As the title suggests the film doesn't take itself seriously and provides loads of laughs with some gruesome deaths!

John Carpenters The Thing is probably his best film to date. Starring Kurt Russell at his best this film is a must watch for sci-fi fans and still holds up today. It's worth watching for the practical effects alone. Hot Frosty isn't.

This week in a break from the norm we took a look at the Hayao Miyazaki animated film Howl's Moving Castle. At times this film is visually stunning but as with many of Miyazaki's films sometime a little hard to follow. The story in Howl's Moving Castle is based in an alternate reality filled with wizard, witches, turnip topped scare crows and talking fire. Directed by James Cameron this movie had effects that were for the time ground breaking and for a while set the standard of film special effects. We also chat about the 1977 epic A Bridge Too Far. Controversial at the time the film tells the story of the failed Allied offencive Market Garden. Due to poor planning lack of equipment and no communications operation Market Garden is seen as one of WWII most costly failures.

Don't expect this film to have you on the edge of your seat but it's worth a watch and probably a second watch to catch the things you might have missed! This week the lads take a look at the fantastic film Godzilla Minus One. If only Hollywood could make a film as fantastic as this one! The director Akashi Yamasaki should be give the reigns to all future Godzilla movies as this film blows all the previous film out of the water its that good! Godzilla done as it should be!! Fantastic cast fantastic special effects and brilliant story. A must watch.

This week the lads took a look at two listener suggestions. The Remains of the Day (1993) which has a fantastic cast including Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Christopher Reeve, James Fox, Lena Heady to name but a few. This film is slow very slow and wasn't a favourite with a few of the lads but we all recognised its a well made film flawlessly acted. We also took a look back at the 1937 black and white classic Oh, Mr Porter! Starring the trio of Will Hay, Moore Marriott and Graham Moffatt whom at the time were massive stars itsa slap stick comedy at it best.

This episode the lads take a look at the 2019 film Ford v Ferrari. Based on the events in 1966 during which Ford won the 24 hour Le Mans race beating the dominant Ferrari. The film follows the relationship between Carroll Shelby, Ken Miles and the Ford company itself and whilst there's a good deal of poetic licence on offer it's a good representation of how this panned out. In this episode the lads take a look at Society of the Snow a film based on real life events and by all accounts an accurate account of the 1972 Uruguayan flight that crashed in the Andes. The survivors had to endure 72 days of freezing conditions and a lack of food.
We also took a look at the 2016 film Wiskey Tango Foxtrot. Once again this film was inspired by true events however in this film there was no snow!

This week the lads watched the 2014 cult movie Creep. Suggested by Laura its fair to say this isn't a film the lads themselves would have picked! Josef played by Mark Duplass is a serial killer that lures his victims to film him for 12 hours and then murder them. Mark Duplass play an excellent creepy character that becomes more unhinged as the film progresses. The lads found the red flags that were obvious and the character Aaron played by Patrick Brice hard to ignore! Thanks Laura for the suggestion!

This week the lads took a look at the brand new full length Luther film now on Netflix.If your a fan of the Luther tv drama series then your going to really enjoy this film!! With Idris Elba as Luther and Andy Serkis playing the most brilliant 'bad guy' David Robey this film will draw you in.
This week the lads take a look at the classic 1999 movie The Green Mile. Can you believe this was a first watch for one of the lads? Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name The Green Mile is by many a much loved classic. With a host of brilliant actors its well worth a watch. word of warning it is on the long side!! The film enters around the guards working the death row block of a 1930's American prison. With a trick performing mouse a bladder infection a magical inmate and a couple of dastardly villains what's not to like about this film?
This week the lads take a look at the Coen brothers film The Ballard Of Buster Scruggs. This is an anthology of six film all based in the old west before the civil war. The films aren't connected and some worked better than others although all are filmed brilliantly as you would expect from the Coen brothers and all have a dark theme. Does it deserve such a spread of marks from the lads?

This week the lads took a look at the Vietnam war film The Last Full Measure. This film has a host of big names in the cast including William Hurt, Ed Harris, Peter Fonda and Samuel l Jackson to name a few. Based on a true story it follows the actions of William H Pitsenbarger who saved nearly 60 soldiers during one battle but ultimately payed with his life. Around 30 years after his death he was finally awarded the medal of honour for his actions and the film tells the story of how his parents eventually received his medal.

This week the a look at two films. The multi Oscar nominated film Good Will Hunting and the much smaller but equally inspiring film Bank Of Dave.
With Oscar nominated and in some cases winning performances most notably by the late Robin Williams Good Will Hunting has some what of a cult following. Written by and starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck at the young age of 19 it is in parts a brilliant film.
Following on in the 'feel good' theme Bank Of Dave tell the story of how Dave Fishwick played by Rory Kinnear took on the established banking system and won by opening the first bank in one hundred and fifty years that still exists today. A very inspiring film.

Wow Scarlett Johansson hasn't aged a bit! Directed by Michael Bay this was, back in the day, a block buster of a movie! Its been about 18 years since the lads first watched this film and sadly it doesn't quite hold up as we remembered. Based on the memoirs of Wladyslaw Szpilman The Pianist is a harrowing watch. The film recounts the struggles of Wladyslaw as he fights to survive the atrocious conditions inflicted on the Jews community in the Warsaw Ghetto during the ww11 occupation of Poland. Its quite an accurate account of what took place and the lads felt well worth a watch.

Is this Quentin Tarantino's best film to date? Possibly! Although this movie took a fair bit of criticism for re-writing the history of WW11 it does start off with 'once upon a time' letting you know its not meant to be taken as what really happened. Its hard to pick out a stand out performance in this film as all the acting is top notch but has there ever been a better bad guy than Standarenfuhrer Hans Landa? Played by Christoph Waltz, Landa really gets you on the edge of your seat every time he's on screen!There are so many stand out scenes in this filming the lads would definitely recommend.

This film deals with the most harrowing of topics that of abduction and rape. It pulls no punches in showing the terrible ordeal that Lisa McVey was subjected to. Whilst we all gave this film top marks we felt a warning should be given before watching this film. At times we were all made to feel uncomfortable watching it but that's testimony to to the acting of the main characters not least Katie Douglas who plays Lisa McVey.

Based on the book 'Contact' written by Carl Sagan. The film has a host of stars not least Jodie Foster. The story follows the life and early career of Dr Eleanor Arroway. Ellie leads team that's part of the SETI programme and how finding an alien signal creates all sorts of complications.
This film was picked by a Elly Bangs the author of the new sci-fi novel 'Unity'. I contacted Elly to let her know how much I enjoyed her short story 'Dandelion' which can be found on the 'Clarkesworld' podcast released in September 2018.

Peanut Butter Falcon 2019 a great easy watch film! Not too deep on the plot front and at times a little rushed but all in all a great film to fill a few hours. It'll make you laugh and a few thrills thrown in as well. The three main characters are brilliantly cast with Shia LaBeouf at his brilliant best! Zack Gottsagen and Dakota Johnson are fantastic in their performances too!
