I know a lot of people who had to #reskill and carve out new career pathways for themselves. It is very difficult! When the education is there, employers are not. When the employers are willing, governmental support is missing. We have tons of amazing free online education. But it is not recognized by businesses. There are incredible people who took the leap, learned something totally new. They need work experience to get started, but an internship is only for “fresh” graduates. And while we are complaining about talent shortages, we are not really willing to employ someone who has so drastically changed their career. Let someone else try first… Today’s podcast is about #reskilling, #education and #meaningfulcareers.

My guests are two amazing people who are passionate about changing the world of work. They provide education, identify career pathways and support the transition of those who are experiencing major career shifts: ➔Jamie Albers, the co-founder of Mento (https://www.mento.co/about) ➔David Timis, the Global Communications Leader at Generation (https://www.generation.org/)

To get in touch with them: - Jamie: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamiealbers/ - David: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidtimis/

We will talk about: ➔ The impact this past one and a half year has had on the job market ➔ The harsh realities of career transitioning for the re-skilled ➔ Transforming education to allow for multiple and diverse pathways throughout our lives ➔ The 4Cs needed to succeed in the world of work

We have chosen HYBRID as the new way of work. HYBRID is challenging and faces the risk of inheriting the worst of the two worlds of work. HYBRID opens up concerns about Power - Fairness - Trust - Performance. Can we address them? Mark Mortensen (INSEAD) is joining me today, for a 2nd round of discussions, exactly 12 months after we have recorded together an episode of the Making Remote Work series. We go through the research that has been conducted this past year and talk about hybridity – power and fairness, trust, performance and adaptation. Most importantly, Mark will share his insights and tips so that the hybrid world we are walking towards will be successful for both individuals and organizations

For those who want to access Mark's latest publications: ➔ https://sloanreview.mit.edu/article/are-your-team-members-lonely/ ➔ https://knowledge.insead.edu/leadership-organisations/teams-in-evolution-and-revolution-after-the-pandemic-15876 ➔ https://hbr.org/2021/02/making-the-hybrid-workplace-fair ➔ https://hbr.org/2021/02/wfh-is-corroding-our-trust-in-each-other

Mark Mortensen is an Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour at INSEAD. His area of expertise is organisational collaboration, with an emphasis on two increasingly prevalent ways of organising that do not fit traditional models of team dynamics: globally distributed (virtual) and project-based work.

Mark's research has been recognised by the academic community through awards including the William H. Newman Award, Organisational Behaviour Division Best Dissertation-Based Paper Award, and Runner-up OCIS Division Best Paper Award from the Academy of Management; and the Best Paper Award Finalist nomination by the Interdisciplinary Network of Groups Researchers. His research has been published in top peer-reviewed academic journals including the Organization Science, Management Science, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Organizational Behaviour, and International Journal of Conflict Management. His works has been featured in multiple edited volumes, practitioner journals such as the MIT-Sloan Management Review, Harvard Business Review Online, and IESE Insight; and in media outlets including the Economist, The Boston Globe, and The Globe and Mail.

Ordinary people achieving the extraordinary! This is an inspiring story showing how curiosity can be the spark for systemic educational transformation. Agastya International Foundation has started an educational movement in India driven by a "simple" mission - educating children by fuelling their curiosity and creativity. In 2020, through extreme conditions, they not only managed to reach the 15 million children in remote villages, but they managed to bring education to a different level. Seemingly ordinary people, a great deal of personal initiative, passion for their calling, care, friendship and true leadership - have transformed an organization into a movement. This is a must watch episode of the Building Resilience series hosting: - Ramji Raghavan - Founder and Chairman of Agastya International Foundation - Phanish Puranam - Professor of Strategy and Organizational Design at INSEAD

Today we are looking through the lenses of sociology and psychology to answer two questions: 1. How can organizational culture act as a shock absorber & help companies rebound from adversities? 2. What makes individuals resilient? Together with Huggy Rao, Professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resources at Stanford Graduate School of Business, we will: ✅ Discuss how "cultural protections" enable people and organizations respond to shocks ✅ Provide examples on how to activate the "best self" in each individual and how this will lead to increased resilience ✅ Emphasize the need to move from "a room called fear" to a "room called hope" for both individuals and organizations ✅ Moving away from Planning towards building the CARE-SHARE-DARE muscle in Organizations

🔷Professor Rao studies collective action within organizations and in markets. His research and by implication, his teaching, revolves around scaling up mobilization, innovation, and talent in organizations. 🔷His most recent book, co-authored with Bob Sutton of the School of Engineering at Stanford, is "Scaling Up Excellence". The book is a Wall Street Journal Bestseller and was included in the best business books to read in 2014 by Financial Times, Inc Magazine, Amazon, Forbes, Washington Post and the Library Journal. 🔷His research has been published in journals such as the Administrative Science Quarterly, American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science and Strategic Management Journal. He is also the author of “Market Rebels: How Activists Make or Break Radical Innovation”, Princeton University Press. 2009.

What happens when multiple shocks hit us? Have we reflected on 2020 and what have we learned? Have we identified the cracks in our systems? How can we enable ourselves to be better prepared for the next crisis? ⛳️Uncertainty and complexity are states of nature. ⛳️We will never have full knowledge. ⛳️There are no templates to tell us exactly what to do. ⛳️We will always make mistakes. By acknowledging the above, we allow ourselves to experiment, place early bets, fail fast, and try again. We will acquire the missing information. We will figure out where the holes are and will be able to think ahead. Today, my guests are Rajshree Agarwal and Constance Helfat.

RAJSHREE AGARWAL is the Rudolph Lamone Professor of Entrepreneurship and Strategy and Director of the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets at the University of Maryland. Rajshree studies the evolution of industries, firms, and individual careers, as fostered by the twin engines of innovation and enterprise. Rajshree’s scholarship uses an interdisciplinary lens to provide insights on strategic innovation for new venture creation and for firm renewal. She routinely publishes in leading journals in strategy and entrepreneurship. An author of more than 60 studies, her research has been cited more than 10,000 times, received numerous best paper awards, and funded by grants from various foundations, including the Kauffman Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the National Science Foundation. She is currently the co-editor of the Strategic Management Journal and has previously served in co-editor and senior editor roles at Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and Organization Science respectively. Rajshree is a senior contributor at Forbes, providing insights for leading purposeful lives, strategy, and innovation. She has been featured in major media outlets including the Washington Post, USA Today, Time, and the Baltimore Sun, and has appeared in several video interviews and podcasts. Her op-eds have had over 100,000 reads, and her conversation with David Rubin on “The Rubin Report” drew approximately 25,000 views. Agarwal’s ability to put complex thoughts into clear terms led one media outlet to describe her as “an economist who makes things understandable.”

It is too late for me to change my career! Very few succeed in doing this. I could never do it! Indeed, few succeed because only a few try and put in the effort. Changing careers when we are 30-40-50 is not an easy responsibility. Mortgages, children, sick parents, economic uncertainty – will keep someone in a job even if it makes them feel miserable.

Adriana Kosovska, the founder of the Zero to Dream Job project, did not even know there is such a thing as “career coaching” when she switched careers. Now she helps people identify their calling so they can stop struggling with a job they do not love.

  • Are you wondering what a Dream Job feels like?
  • Should your passion become your career?
  • How to best time your career change?
  • Can you make the change successfully even at 40? How about 50?
  • How do you navigate the uncertain waters and arrive at your desired destination?

We hope the conversation will ignite the desire for change in you. It is never too late to find your calling and do what you have always dreamt of!

I encourage you to get in touch with Adriana and find out more about the Zero to Dream Job project: - http://zerotodreamjob.com/ - https://www.linkedin.com/in/adriana-kosovska-people-manager-dream-job-coach-463b4253/

Getting noticed when we are working remotely is harder than in traditional set-ups. Research has shown that getting the "required" visibility can easily lead to burnout. Ioana Cristea has researched this topic in detail, and the findings are alarming! To make themselves visible, employees in distributed environments mainly revert to online meetings.

Their calendars are full to the point that one can wonder - When do they have time to eat? Do they have time for their families or some slack time for themselves? When does work get done?

In this episode, we discuss this "virtual rat race" and what can be done differently - at organizational and individual levels.

Ioana Cristea conducted this research over a period of 7 years. You can find the full research papers here: https://badm.au.dk/fileadmin/Business_Administration/PhD/Thesis_Ioana_Cristea.pdf. https://pubsonline.informs.org/doi/10.1287/orsc.2018.1265

covid19 #workpractices #workplace

COVID-19 has disrupted work and organizations across the globe. During the pandemic, 29 researchers from around the world have joined forces to review prior literature - rooted mainly in work and organizational psychology - and tried to make sense of the implications of Covid-19 for employees, teams, and organizations .(https://psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2020-58612-001.pdf) They focused on: ✔️ emergent changes in work practices (e.g., working from home, virtual teamwork) ✔️ emergent changes for workers (e.g., social distancing, stress, and unemployment) ✔️ potential moderating factors (demographic characteristics, individual differences, and organizational norms) given the likelihood that COVID-19 will generate disparate effects.

This broad-scope overview provides an integrative approach for considering the implications of COVID-19 for work, workers, and organizations while also identifying issues for future research and insights to inform solutions.

In this episode, I am hosting Mark van Vugt, Professor of Evolutionary Psychology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and Jay Narayanan, Associate Professor Management & Organizations at the National University of Singapore. We discussed: ✔️ the literature that was reviewed and the process ✔️ the intended audience of this review article ✔️ the lessons and warnings of the past ✔️ the main effects of the current Covid-19 pandemic on the workplace ✔️ the disproportionate impact this pandemic has on individuals ✔️ the key takeaways for organizations and employees ✔️ the unanswered questions that require further research ✔️ how organizations could support academia to conduct this research and bring back actionable insights

Working from space gives you a unique perspective on work, teams, leadership, and the future. In this episode of Making Remote Work, Luca Parmitano offers us a glimpse of how work is carried out remotely from space. We talk about communication, teamwork, leadership, autonomy, confinement, the opportunities that remote work could bring in the future. Luca Parmitano is an Italian engineer and astronaut in the European Astronaut Corps for the European Space Agency (ESA). He was selected as an ESA astronaut in May 2009.

In February 2011, Luca was assigned as a flight engineer to Italian space agency ASI's first long-duration mission on the International Space Station. Luca spent 166 days in space, personally conducting over 20 experiments, and took part in two spacewalks and the docking of four spacecraft during his ‘Volare’ mission. He landed safely back on Earth on 11 November 2013.

Luca was launched to the International Space Station for his second mission on 20 July 2019 – the 50th anniversary of the first human lunar landing – and returned 6 February 2020. His 201-day mission saw him take on the role of Space Station commander for Expedition 61 – becoming the third European and first-ever Italian International Space Station commander. During Beyond, Luca supported more than 50 European experiments and 200 international experiments in space. Other highlights including performing the first ‘live DJ session’ in Earth orbit, addressing world leaders at the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP 25, and talking to Nobel Laureates about exoplanets and the chemistry of batteries.

In this episode, we discuss remote from a different angle. We start with eSports and the learnings on remote from this newly booming industry. We then take a turn and discuss organizational design - hierarchies, agility, routines, change management, and designing employee interactions that lead to productivity and wellbeing when remote. Julien Clement (Assistant Professor - Stanford University) studies organization design and its impact on collaboration within and across organizations. He is generally interested in understanding the link between formal organizational structure and informal social relationships: how does an organization’s structure affect how its members form relationships and develop routines? How can it help them adapt these routines when environmental demands change? And when can organizations thrive without any formal structure? Julien investigates these issues through a ‘micro-analytic’ approach: rather than study organizations as broad aggregates, he starts by observing social interactions among individuals and tries to understand how organizational structure enables these interactions to aggregate into organizational outcomes. His work has relied on a variety of analytical methods (network analysis, agent-based models, big-data analytics) applied in a variety of contexts including the television game-show industry, professional videogaming (e-Sports) and mobile healthcare in Africa. Most recently, Julien started studying how the deployment of artificial intelligence inside organizations may affect collaboration and learning among their members. How can we define a modern team? What makes them effective? How should we manage remote teams? Can they be as productive as a collocated team? How about managing multiple distributed teams? How can we best solve remote conflicts? Join Mark Mortensen and me as we connect research with practice and provide answers to these burning questions. Mark Mortensen is an Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour at INSEAD. He is co-directing the Emerging Leaders in a Digital Age program. His area of expertise is organizational collaboration, with an emphasis on two increasingly prevalent ways of organizing that do not fit traditional models of team dynamics: globally distributed (virtual) and project-based work. In his research, he has investigated the nature of conflict in distributed collaborations and its relationship to identity, context, and communication; the impact of dispersion structure – in the form of balance, imbalance, and isolation – on collaboration dynamics; and the effects of first-hand experience – gained through site visits and expatriate assignments – on trust. He has also explored the interpersonal effects of working in multiple, partially-overlapping, fluidly-shifting projects, developing a fundamentally new model of collaboration. MAKING REMOTE WORK - is a limited series led by the ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGN COMMUNITY and hosted by SKILLS FOR MARS. It is a public service video-podcast in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. On this episode hosting Dylan Ali, we shift the discussion from industries and skills to something that we believe is extremely important for everyone - happiness, wellbeing, seeing the light through the chaos of every day.  No real change can happen without being able to sit down, breathe, reflect, sift through the noise, truly understand what drives you, and gives you the positive energy that you can then share back with the world through your actions. I was immediately attracted by the "We Hire 45+" (Angajez 45+) initiative started by Alina Anghel & Rodica Obancea (Great HRs) in Romania. It is a solution to our constant problem related to the shrinkage of the candidate market, a manifesto against age discrimination in recruitment. Alina & Rodica dream of an inclusive approach and have bravely taken on the responsibility to build a bridge between employers and candidates around the age of 45 who are looking for a job. Join our discussion to see how "We Hire 45+" started, what are the actions that were taken so far and their results, the discoveries and surprises along the way, learnings, and future directions. I am always amazed at what we can do if we put our minds to it. Anjuli stared in music, as an opera singer and performer and she loved what she was doing, but she always dreamt of making a bigger impact - and for her, this meant joining the business world. She had to learn everything from scratch. Her recommendations for anyone making such a huge change: learn how to breathe and give yourself a moment when things become very difficult, find a support network, stay open and absorb knowledge and feedback from your surroundings. Most importantly - trust yourself, keep moving forward, and go all in! I met Irina about 8 years ago in Strasbourg. She was 27, a passionate Design student who recently gave up everything to follow her dream. She was active non-stop – learning design, learning French, working odd jobs to support herself and her studies. I never saw her flinch in the face of hardships. She kept her smile on, she kept focused and worked harder. She still does. She is now in the US, a designer that is being recognized at renowned international exhibitions. This is a story of how passion and hard work can lead to a life of choice! Join us, I hope you enjoy the conversation :) If you want to see the beautiful designs made by Irina: https://www.irinaflore.com/ Instagram: @irina.flore To show your support for the podcast you can subscribe (free) on my website: www.skillsformars.com and click the YouTube - confirm your subscription button Music: https://www.purple-planet.com/ (https://www.purple-planet.com) Support this podcast

I have been asked to have more discussions on change and change agility as one of the essential skills in the future of work. As I wondered who could best talk about self-transformation and re-invention, I decided that the most fit will be people who are going through change as we speak, or people who have gone through it and were successful or have failed. My hope is that these discussions will motivate you to forge your own, unique journey, no matter the difficulty. The difference should be that you will know first-hand what to expect and will have higher chances of success because you can prepare. My first guest on Skills for Mars Transitions – is Kate. Kate is a speech pathologist who has experienced change throughout her life. We will discuss about adapting to new environments, new languages, new cultures and careers, about finding meaning in what you are doing and believing in yourself throughout the change journey.
