Dr. Dennis Flores is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, an affiliated faculty at the Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Program, and is a Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Center for Research on AIDS at Yale University’s School of Public Health. He has led several studies that investigates the role of parents in the sexual health education of their adolescent children who identify as LGBTQ. His studies fuel his subsequent HIV prevention work that includes both urban and rural community education, being a national spokesperson for HIV testing campaigns, and workforce development with around 1400 nurses across three continents. Dr. Flores earned his PhD from Duke University, a Masters in Public Health Nursing Leadership at Emory University, and a Bachelors in Nursing from Kennesaw State University in Georgia.

In the last episode of the Puberty Prof Podcast, Dr. Dalmacio Dennis Flores noted common communication barriers existing between parents and their children when it comes to talking about human sexuality, including puberty. In this episode, Dr. Flores returns and provides recommendations for removing these barriers and creating “bridges” in communication. Recommendations include talking before the “expiration date,” remembering that being asked questions are expressions of trust, gently ask what they are asking about, realizing you don’t have to know everything, and using teachable moments.

The National Sexuality Education Standards (NSES) can be used as “tools” for school health and sexuality educators to ensure the information and skill development being taught K-12 is age- and developmentally-appropriate. These standards, though, can also be used as a “tool” for parents and other caregivers for knowing what to talk about with their young people. To help explain what these standards, these “tools,” are about, Nora Gelperin chats with the Puberty Prof. Nora is the Director of Sex Education & Training for Advocates for Youth as well as one of the people on the team to create these standards.

As young people enter and go through adolescence, they will be increasingly exposed to substances, including alcohol.
