Filmed in Africa and staring mostly native Africans, with only a 9 page screenplay, it’s a tense chase with life on the line. Cornel Wilde, 53 years old and suffering dysentery, runs mostly naked through the wilds experiencing many of the dangers of colonial Africa – and it’s all due to the greedy hateful actions of an elephant murderer. A movie with many names, none of which is as good as the story it is based on, finds Tansy just trying to surreptitiously help her husband, who is positive his success is definitely because of his own talent, being ridiculed and castigated by the same man. He will come around in the end, as all skeptical husbands in horror movies do. Vindication for good witches everywhere – at least for now. Show NotesFree Palestine An infamous performance by Christopher Lee – only onscreen for seven minutes and with a mere 16 lines – leaves an indelible and unmatched stamp on the character of Dracula in Hammar Films’ classic Horror of Dracula. Peter Cushing has to kill his best friend while several actors kind of stand around and watch, often disinterestedly. But the women are working every scene. It’s a fascinating mish-mash! Episode NotesFree Palestine Turns out you can’t mansplain your way around a demon, as Dana Andrews finds out in 1957’s Night of the Demon (Curse of the Demon if you’re outside of the US – I think?). A skeptic and self-proclaimed paranormal psychologist who walks under ladders just to see what happens f-s around with the wrong cultist and is about to find out. But then a heady combo of meth, hypnotism, and the wisdom of a lovely school teacher allows him to outsmart said cultist with a good dose of what goes around comes around. And yes, a demon makes an unmistakable appearance. Recommendations: Treat yourself – you deserve it. Free Palestine We’re here to see a man about a horse in Stanley Kubrick’s racetrack heist film The Killing. Asymmetric storytelling and a world before cell phones lead to a tense will they/won’t they between a group of thieves and the heist they have planned to a T. It’s a tough break when you succeed in a heist and then can’t make it to the end of the day because of a wicked woman. Last we saw him, he was a washed up boxer, this time he’s a callous murderer who is wielding an iron fist over the residence of Black Rock. Free Palestine This week, the film Lemuel has been referencing for two years is finally here Wages of Fear from 1953. It couldn’t go on the AFI list because of the A, but for thrills, it’s certainly packed. Four men, including a Mario AND a Luigi, several tons of nitroglycerin, 40s era trucks and 300 miles of unforgiving terrain. What could possibly go wrong? NotesFree Palestine We are starting off strong (and brief) with the first iteration of The Most Dangerous Game from 1932 – spoiler alert: it’s people, just like Soylent Green (spoiler #2). Faye Wray and Robert Armstrong stuck around and filmed another film on the King Kong set while postproduction was building a gorilla and some dinosaurs. It’s short and tense and there is no mistaking the villain for a villain. It’s good stuff! Etched deep in the public consciousness and the cultural zeitgeist, no one over 30 doesn’t know the twist reveal, but watching Gen Z reactions, they still get pulled into the story and are shocked by the places that Hitchcock and Anthony Perkins take us. The filmmaking holds up, the twists and turns hold up and the ride is and has been thrilling. Early Spielberg, unfortunate practical effects, and some excellent performances all lead to a thrill ride that won silver in the AFI thrills list. A conscientious police chief who loves his family teams up with a rich, egghead thrillseeker and a salty dog out for revenge and hijinks ensue. It’s a remarkably good time for a movie where a dog dies. This week Amity gets frustrated with the self-inflicted trials that Cary Grant goes through in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest. Never has someone tried so hard to get themselves in trouble and never has someone had so little care for their own life without being actively seeking death. We have an excellent villain and a compelling leading lady and some very cool – and yes thrilling – set pieces. If only our protagonist wasn’t such a dumb dummy.

A desert shoot in 130 degree temperatures and an epidemic of amoebic dysentery along with just the barest bones of a script still couldn’t stop this movie being made. Camp at its finest and spectacular practical effects that still hold up over 40 years later, the thrills keep coming with this one. Episode Notes It’s a whole new world that we have maybe seen before! We are embarking on the 2021 adaptation of “Jerusalem’s Lot” called Chapelwaite. Starring Adrien Brody and Emily Hampshire and set over a hundred years before the versions of Salems’ Lot we have already visited, this is a rich and moody and gasp plotty gothic horror. So far its mostly questions and intros but we have high hopes. Charles Boone has lost his wife but gained a house and a mill, so he moves his family to the town of Preachers’ Corners, Maine, where no one wants them except the journalist turned nanny Rebecca Morgan. They aren’t welcome, but they are protected. And that’s what we know. Intriguing so far, we hope you join us on the final lap of our Stephen King marathon, seems like it’s going to be a good one.

Episode 2 of the 2020 adaptation of The Stand starts with a reveal that’s barely a reveal and a title card to center us in time, so progress is being made. Larry, Rita, Nadine and Lloyd are introduced in increasingly gory scenes. An indecent proposal is made. Rats should be first billed in the credits, but get short shrift and Harold gets one scene that doesn’t make us instantly uncomfortable. We wonder whether Amber Heard will start acting or if this wooden vacancy is here to stay – it’s a lot in this week’s episode. Episode Notes Entering the third year of our Stephen King coverage, we get into the creepy center of 2020’s The Outsider. Holly has some news to share and it’s quite a doozy. Ralph backslides into the 1800s in his dismissal of his wife, while said wife makes some alarming and not particularly well thought out decisions for Glory’s family. We learn of international boogeymen and give our outsider a name – El Cuco. Half of our intrepid bunch is on board and half are being left behind. We leave this set of episodes on a cliff-hanger the likes of which we haven’t seen in quite a while. We’re hopeful Holly pulls through – at least she has some idea of what might be coming. We’ll find out next week.

Episode Notes Trucks (1997) King on Screen: All trucks great and small
Come with us to Lunar, Nevada, the smallest town that ever incorporated as we watch as it’s trucks are taken over by, well, it’s unclear. This week we watched Trucks, the second adaptation of the short story, “Trucks” which is powered by less cocaine and more exposition. But the exposition of what is currently happening is non-existent. Was it aliens? Was it chemicals? Was it early cell phone coverage? The culprit remains elusive, but at least this movie makes you care about it’s characters.

Episode Notes This week sees our first second adaptation with the ABC miniseries of The Shining. We will watch other second-attempts but we’ll never forget our first. The three-episode arc allows for us to get settled in the Stanley hotel, I mean the Overlook, and we get glimpses of real people before the hotel gets mean. We do some comparisons, but try to look at this as its own thing, down to that funky bandleader. And we both consider this our dream job, even after the warning this and its predecessor have given to us.

Sometimes Stephen King writes a damn fine drama and this is one of those times. Also helpful, nary a woman to be seen, so nary a female character to mess up. We discuss the pitfalls of marketing and what makes a cult classic.
