eTown is an exciting weekly radio broadcast/podcast heard from coast to coast on NPR, public and commercial stations. Every eTown show is taped in front of a live audience and features performances from many of today's top musical artists as well as conversations and information about the world around us. eTown's mission is to educate, entertain and inspire a diverse audience through music and conversation in order to create a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable world.
We have a very special show for you this week! We dive into our archives once more to feature four Lost Legends of Bluegrass and Acoustic music. We will hear music and conversation from musical pioneers Doc Watson, John Hartford, Ralph Stanley, and Earl Scruggs. Nick Forster will also share some personal insight and stories from his shared experiences with these wonderful characters.

The wayback machine lands us back in 2017 to revisit a show featuring John Moreland and Phoebe Hunt. This week on eTown, we’re featuring indie-folk-rock band Big Thief and legendary Americana singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams, live from Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO. While the theatre of Red Rocks is dramatic in and of itself, this year’s show was electric – storms brewed overhead before, during, and after. Paired with incredible music from Big Thief and Lucinda Williams, set and setting combined for a night that was nothing short of magic.

It's early Spring in Boulder, Colorado where we welcome The Lil Smokies from Montana and Emily Scott Robinson from Telluride to eTown Hall. The Lil Smokies have graduated from 'up and coming' to 'fully arrived' - they showcase their hyper-melodic brand of song-strong Bluegrass music. Emily Scott Robinson shares the stage with her sultry voice and plays a 'spooky' tune with Nick, Helen and The eTones. Bromberg’s versatile variety of bluegrass, blues and country is a perfect foil for Wanda’s unmistakable take on her classic songs she made famous in the 50’s, back when she was on tour with Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash. Bromberg, who got his start playing with his own set of legends like Jerry Jeff Walker and Bob Dylan, joins Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Wanda Jackson at the end of the show, but their conversations with host Nick Forster make great radio. This was originally an ‘eTown on the road’ show done from the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins, Colorado, with a bit of intrigue thrown in: When Amy misses her plane, Nick, Helen, and the rest of the eTones are enlisted to fill in in her absence. While they make beautiful music with Emily in the first set of the show, the question arises: Will Amy make it to the theater in time to join Emily for their second set in the show? But once again, while digging into the eTown archives, we came across this episode from 1994 that was just too stellar from start to finish to even consider not re-airing it in its entirety. Guitarist (and bird watcher) extraordinaire Richard Thompson joins us, as does gifted Canadian performer Sarah McLachlan (who was on her very first tour of the US at this time). And we hear from eChievement Award Julie Weier, of Wisconsin, cofounder of The Midwest Renewable Energy Association, which educates the public about energy conservation through a number of yearly events.

For part two of a two part eTown re-airing, we’re joined by eTown veteran Aoife O’Donovan of the Grammy Award-winning band “I’m With Her.” Aoife returns to eTown for a very special performance with collaborator Jeremy Kittel, who co-produced and arranged Aoife’s Bull Frogs Croon (And Other Songs) EP. Aoife and Jeremy are also joined by a string quartet. Also with us for their visit is Latin and American roots band Che Apalache, featuring three powerhouse Latin American musicians – two from Argentina, Franco Martino (guitar), Martin Bobrik (mandolin), and Pau Barjau (banjo) from Mexico, as well as worldly frontman Joe Troop. Nick also sits down for a conversation with Bea Johnson, author of Zero Waste Home. Bea initiated the zero-waste movement and shares her tips for living a more sustainable lifestyle.
This week, appropriately, we have an especially international eTown show, one in which the performances and conversations were all so strong that we’re presenting it in two parts. Irish-American singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan of the Grammy Award-winning band “I’m With Her” returns to eTown, sharing pieces from her latest collaboration with Jeremy Kittel, who co-produced and arranged Aoife’s first new studio recording in four years. With us for their first visit is the Latin American and North American, Grammy-nominated roots band Che Apalache, featuring band members from Argentina, Mexico, and North Carolina (home of band leader, Joe Troop). Plus, we’ll visit with KC Curberson-Alvarado. Her nonprofit effort began as a local festival to celebrate cultural diversity in central Tennessee, but when the infamous ICE raid happened in 2018, her group became more deeply involved, now providing legal assistance, language classes, and so much more.
This week, eTown brings back two of our favorite musical guests - multi-genre band Lake Street Dive and Americana musician Shakey Graves. While the show was recorded remotely, we do have a very special collaboration at the end featuring a duet between Rachael Price and Alejandro Rose-Garcia (Shakey Graves). And Catherine Coleman Flowers, a recent MacArthur Fellow, is the author of a new book called "Waste: One Woman's Fight Against America's Dirty Secret." Memphis singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Valerie June joins us in this “back by popular demand” rebroadcast. Her unique sound is a mixture of folk, blues, gospel, soul, country, Appalachian, and bluegrass. Singer and songwriter Mick Flannery, who hails from County Cork in Ireland, is our other terrific musical guest. Longtime eTown friend and talented artist Nathaniel Rateliff joins us for a stunning private performance at eTown Hall, featuring several beautifully written songs from his most recent musical project. Plus, he and Nick have an up close and personal conversation. We’ll also feature musical samples from various iconic New Orleans artists from a Soul Jazz Records compilation that Nathaniel highly recommends. And Nick chats with Colin Butfield, WWF’s Executive Producer of the Our Planet documentary project. Colin is also a member of the WWF UK executive team. He shares information about The Earthshot Prize, a new global project designed to incentivize innovative environmental change to help repair the planet over the next ten years.
One of our all time favorites, Strand of Oaks, returns to the eTown stage this week. This dynamic, gifted writer and singer (and one of the genuinely nicest people you’ll ever meet) brings his full band this time around. Coming solo to play with the eTones and Nick for the rest of the musical portion of the show is talented young Anna Burch of Detroit, Michigan. And, for this encore broadcast, we’ll have an eChievement Award story of a young man who’s come up with a truly unique and natural way to involve kids of all ages in cleaning up the polluted waters of New York Harbor.
When this eTown episode first aired last year, our musical guests had one thing in common: They were all returning to the eTown stage after many years. They include the dynamic Australian band The Waifs, which normally consists of sisters Vikki Thorn and Donna Simpson and their longtime collaborator Josh Cunningham; and gifted singer/songwriter Jim Lauderdale, whose songs have been recorded by a Who’s Who of country and pop music stars over the years. Nick also chats with James Taylor, who played frequently at the real White House, and once at the fictional White House in the TV series The West Wing, with a rendition of A Change Is Gonna Come.
This week on the eTown airwaves we’re joined by Americana, country singer-songwriter Tyler Childers. Tyler fuses gritty original song lyrics with the folk, bluegrass and rock influences of his Appalachian upbringing. Also with us is “one-man-band” The Suitcase Junket, with his one of a kind sound created from an array of instruments all played at once. Rounding things out, we have a conversation with eChievement Award winner Chad Bernstein, founder of Guitars Over Guns, an organization that provides mentoring to at-risk youth through music and arts education as an alternative to the negative and harmful influences that typically dominate their environments.

Nick also sits down for a conversation with renowned author Helen Thorpe, whose book, “The Newcomers,” is a powerful and moving account of how refugee teenagers, many of whom have left extremely dangerous situations in their homelands, come to America to learn a new language and a new culture, in the hopes of finding a new beginning.
Legendary guitarist, composer, and long-time friend of the show Bill Frisell visits our solar-powered stage to share music from his collection of recordings inspired by television and film. Also joining us is independent folk artist Sam Amidon, who began cutting his musical teeth as a young person in a musical household. Plus an inspiring eChievement Award story about a nonprofit that has created several much needed mobile shower units, providing a much needed, private, safe, and dignified opportunity for the homeless. Earth Day is a huge deal for eTown. We taped our first show on Earth Day in 1991, launching our program with a commitment to both entertain and inform by featuring great live music, plus interviews with artists while presenting the views of experts, scientists, authors, and policy makers about the state of our environment and how we can each try to help heal the planet.
When we started, many radio stations were unsure of our particular format: one-of-a-kind live musical moments combined with compelling conversation. But eTown soon caught on, and we continue to reach more and more people. eTown was ahead of the curve, talking about climate change, almost 30 years ago. But though that discussion is far more common today than it was in 1991, the truth is, the Earth still needs our attention – now more than ever.
This week, we present our “Earth Day’s 50th Anniversary” Special, Covid-19 edition. Helen and Nick worked from home, she combing through the archives to select the various pieces, he writing and recording his parts. Their voices were recorded in their basement. eTown audio engineer extraordinaire Todd Ayers assembled it all with their direction. And the result is a lively, rich program we’re pretty sure you’ll enjoy. Lots of music, conversations with people like Jane Goodall and even the founder of Earth Day, the late Senator Gaylord Nelson – all from the eTown archives.

With the recent passing of the legendary singer-songwriter John Prine (October 10, 1946 - April 7, 2020), eTown host Nick Forster revisits the interview from John’s 1996 visit to the eTown stage.
