Who's Holding the Rope?Domination and passivity have nothing to do with submission. In fact, they are exactly NOT what subjection is about. They are opposed to the central feature of the human character that is distinctly in His image: the ability to choose—more than that, the requirement to choose.

Paul calls Jesus “God’s mystery…in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Just as wisdom is personified in the 8th chapter of Proverbs, Jesus’ example of subjection to the Father becomes the living embodiment of wisdom and wise behavior in the New Testament.

Rather than operate according to the principle of “one body with many equally valuable members” we often elevate some gifts above the others. In essence we make celebrities out of those that have “public” gifts such as pastors, administrators, and worship leaders, while people who exercise “lesser” gifts remain non-functional, and sometimes become dysfunctional. The reality is that we have inadvertently created “key roles” that become lightning rods for conflict.

Trust is the very essence of love-based relating, as we explored in the previous chapter. God is love. We love each other because He first loved us. When we love each other we are expressing the pure character of God. Love and trust go hand in hand, and together they overcome fear.
The way we relate together determines what kind of relationship we have. We experience and demonstrate oneness as we treat each other with love. This is the mystery of merging two separate identities into one, and it only happens through the bond of love. Chapter 5 explores the kinds of relating in a marriage and how to discover the healthiest way of sharing identity.
This chapter discusses one of the most important skills in any marriage: forgiving, being forgiven and practicing reconciliation. Far from the silly old aphorism, "love means never having to say your sorry" forgiveness is perhaps the most vital component of a loving relationship.
Chapter three of Marriage Rx - Prescription for a radical marriage, has a provocative title, "Naked and Unashamed," but it doesn't have to do with clothing. Rather, it speaks to the importance of transparency in our relationship with God and one another. Welcome to the third installment of Read Between the Worlds audio book episodes.
