This week I had a conversation with Kashmira Bechoo. Kashmira is a South African Poet and Spoken Word Artist. She started her freelance career in editing, proof-reading and copywriting in 2019, and has since gone on to work with international and national authors, organisations, and committees.
The Durban Review selected her poems W.O.M.A.N - Warrior of Man and Nature, and A Foreigner for publication in their first women’s anthology: ‘Drumbeats from Africa’ (2019). Chasing Butterflies, a poem that explores death, and grief was selected for publication in a women’s empowerment book: Womandla! (2019).

She found her passion for rich, dignified and original patterns while studying Design for Textiles. Her work is often inspired by different concepts of culture, tradition and storytelling, focusing on patterns and textures. She uses a range of painting techniques to create wallpapers that are full of depth, detail and rich in colour.

Our guest on this episode is Hina Shafi. Hina is a teacher and an athlete. She is extremely passionate about health and well-being. She uses this as a driving force to encourage women’s participation in sport. She believes sport provides an open door to positive transferable values such as commitment, resilience and leadership. Hina uses sports to inspire social change by educating individuals, fighting inequality and bringing people closer. She believes that her purpose is to lift women up and help them find the tools that they need to live authentically as who they are.

This week I am joined by Joel Davis, the CEO of Tutors United. Tutors united is a social enterprise that employs university students and provides affordable private tutoring to primary school pupils from low-income and migrant backgrounds.
Since starting Tutors United, Joel has scaled tutors united operations across Four UK cities, employed over 250 university students and tutored over 1,000 primary school pupils to make outstanding academic progress.
On this episode, we discuss Joel’s journey from acting to social entrepreneurship and impacting the lives of young pupils by bringing education back home. Joel highlights the need for more male teachers in the educational sector. Joel also shares his experience starting a social enterprise, managing a diverse team and scaling his successful business.

This week, I had an insightful conversation with Deena Tissera, a Community councillor and a PhD candidate. Deena is the vice-chairperson of the George Street Community Council in Aberdeen, Scotland and sits on several strategic boards as an active member pushing for change in the public health and political sphere.
Deena has worked with the NHS and other key public health organisations. Deena is journey is certainly inspiring from representing Sri Lanka in the Miss World pageant in 2015, from finding her voice, finding the strength to impact change in her community and wider.
On this episode we discuss Deena’s passion to use her voice and position to stand in the gap for others and advocate for equality and better health. Deena shares the key moments in her life that ignited the passion address gaps in her community. We discuss the highs and lows of being a BAME woman in politics and the need for more representation within this field. We even touch on Brexit, and the possible impacts it will have on young people and creatives start-ups. Indeed, in times like this creativity is required to ensure that we are problem solver addressing gaps and creating for impact.

This week, I had a conversation with Daniel Hubbard is a London based interiors stylist and art director. Daniel is the owner of Small Batch Goods. An online store of small-batch interior products that support independent makers, small companies and charities. Daniel set up Small Batch Goods to counteract the increasingly fast-paced and throwaway culture by providing quality products that are meaningfully crafted products made to last. I was drawn to small batch good’s ethos and stance on sustainability, supporting and telling the stories of creatives doing good through their journal.
It was a real joy to listen to Daniel's wealth of knowledge and advice. On this episode, we discuss Daniels’ role as a freelancer and business owner not only focus on only making a profit but also doing good. We discuss the revival of the craft industry and supporting independent makers in the UK. We touch on the concept of slow living with a focus on wellbeing and conscious buying. Daniel offers some insight into collaborating with makers and artisans, forming strong and profitable partnerships.

This week I had a lovely conversation with author Jenica Leah. Jenica Leah is an industry expert speaker for sickle cell. She has won multiple awards for her children’s book series My Friend Jen and Sickle Cell health and lifestyle blog ‘Me, Myself and Sickle Cell’.
Jenica is also a youth mentor and publishing coach at JLG Publishing. JLG publishing aims to inspire new writers to bring their stories to print.

A few months ago, I connected with Haleema Ali at the Uprising leadership graduation event. Haleema Ali is a social and political activist, inspiring social change through events, art and workshops. Haleema is also a youth worker, mentor and teacher, helping young people from underrepresented backgrounds to become the leaders of tomorrow.
Indeed, she is making a great impact on the lives of young people in your community specifically Luton and wider. As an educator, Haleema serves her community through mentoring and guiding young people to follow suitable career paths and facilitating the expression of self and cultural identity through art.
In this episode, we discuss the importance of exemplary leadership and role models, especially for young people. During this interview Haleema highlighted the importance of speaking truth to power, using art or a platform to influence change We also touched on how creating for social action can highlight and help to address key issues the youth of today face.
As an educator, Haleema serves her community through mentoring and guiding young people to follow suitable career paths and facilitating the expression of self and cultural identity through art.
