At the age of 18, Bob DePasquale found himself in a fight for his life when diagnosed with cancer. It would become a journey that ultimately shaped his view of himself and the gifts that he could share with the world.
Speaking of Impact is an empowering and educational show that helps people to recognize their time, talent and treasures as powerful tools that bring joy and fulfillment not only to themselves, but to the world around them.
They say the first step is the hardest. The second ain’t that easy either.
But it’s totally worth it and that’s exactly what I’m talking about today.
My “ACE” process has three steps and you can’t get to three without the two.
Last week, you learned about taking action to learn about your people. Now, we have to cover the strategy I told you to forget about 😉.
Once you understand more about how people operate in a generous environment, you can determine what programs, systems, and habits to promote to build the culture.
Have a generous rest of the week. 😀

There is one thing that every culture builder should start with.
It’s ‘bout that action. Simple as that.
Generosity is something we’re all built with. No need to strategize and over think.
You learn best from doing and why not do what’s natural?
This episode is all about the 1st step in my “ACE” process to building a generous workplace culture.
I’ll share with you why its important and how to implement it to make your company take off.

It’s not imposter syndrome unless you’ve done it before.
Yeah, I said that right. If you just aren’t ready to do something, you’re just a beginner.
That’s okay. Everyone starts at some point.
If you have done it before and you think you can’t, then it’s imposter syndrome.
Either way, I have some key thoughts today of how to handle your situation.
The best don’t try to avoid the challenges. They lean in whether it’s familiar or not.

People are quitting jobs like crazy these days.
I support the people who are in “net-negative” situations - the ones that take away from their life despite giving some basic things like a paycheck.
I also support those who don’t feel aligned with the mission of the company.
But what about everyone else?
There are plenty of these and companies and leaders could do a better job of building the right culture for their enjoyment.
I have 6 things that stick out to me as key reasons why people quit (and they don’t have exist).
You’ll want to recognize these things and eliminate them from your culture.

Remote work is meh if your environment stinks.
I support the work from home model if it’s done well. Sadly, it’s not always done well.
Many companies are offering this as a perk these days - not sure how I feel about that. I’m cool with that benefit but it doesn’t seem to be a priority if it’s just an add on.
Work from home should be foundational part of your culture if it exists. There has to be great intention and communication to do it well.
This episode is about the things to avoid in the remote work environment and things to enjoy related to it.
Have a poised rest of the week. 😀

There’s nothing more important than this one thing when stuff goes wrong.
Poise is a skill. It can be trained.
But can it be found?
In other words, can you identify people who are poised without actually seeing them display it?
In short: no.
But there are certain things you can do to understand more about their demeanor. There are questions you can ask and clues to look for when evaluating and interviewing people.
You want people who embrace challenges, disprove of perfections, and are willing to sit in tough times.
The best scenario for a team is people who are calm under pressure. This could change your business.

Toxic cultures are habitual.
There are a lot of internet complaints about toxic bosses. It’s good that toxic culture are called out but it’s not because of bad peope.
Most of the “toxic” bosses are good people with toxic habits. These are the things that form over time as a result of repeated small issues.
It’s easy to get caught up in a culture when people just expect things to be that way. It leads to plenty of miscommunication, unhealthy practices, and ultimately, burnout.
It’s important regardless of your role in an organization that you identify toxic habits before they fully form. We’ll all have toxic moments in our lives where we make mistakes or the people around us do things we don’t like. But it’s the habits that count.
Generous workplace culture is built by creating healthy habits but also an intentional dismissal of the toxic habits. Less is more.
This episode will breakdown 8 of the most prominent toxic habits to identify an eliminate.

The best cultures are built by prioritizing routines.
The first thing you think about when you start your workday should not be how you can pair down your to-do list.
A lot of us show up for work stressed out by the sheer thought of having a lot of things to do. There’s nothing wrong with having a lot to do (unless it’s a result of laziness) but how you handle this is key.
People say they want to be high performers and so they pile on a bunch of expectations. Bad idea.
Generous workplace culture is build by ambitious yet helpful people.
There’s a specific mindset and type of routine you need in order to build healthy and productive culture. This episode covers it in depth.
Have a routine rest of the week. 😉

There’s a major trap that we can all avoid.
It’s something none of us do naturally.
In fact, most of us operate with the complete opposite in mind, until we feel like our career becomes survival.
Some people will tell you that you have to take care of yourself above all else and I disagree. I believe you have to take care of yourself along with others.
If you only ever take care of yourself. You’re losing out on many opportunities and self-care becomes your monarch.
Care for yourself so you can be your best.
This episode addresses the number one thing that limits people in their career.

Generosity has some great emotions.
And humans are emotional beings. The way you use yours can dictate the health of your work experience.

Confidence is great. Arrogance sucks.
I’ve never found two things so different yet so miscast as each other so often.
We can all agree that confidence is an important thing to have in business. It’s what makes you believe that things can get and done and that you’ll make a positive impact on the world.
Arrogance is that thing that turns people off even to the most confident. In fact, in can take down a even the strongest pillars of belief.
I urge you to focus on doing things that build confidence and not arrogance in people. The environment that you create matters.

Employee turnover sucks.
But it doesn’t have to…in fact, it doesn’t even have to be a thing.
I like to think of it as opportunities for all parties. When someone leaves:
I’m not saying there aren’t some bad things but I am saying that it can be good.
Either way, you don’t want a lot of people leaving and new people coming in faster than they can be trainined.
This is why a generous workplace culture is so valuable. It will retain great people and attract them if needed.
This episode will address the reasons (the real ones) people leave your company.

There’s nothing like family - good or bad.
Families can have the best of time and the worst of times because they are groups of people who are highly invested in each other. We are a lot about our family.
You also care a lot about your work - hopefully, not more than your family but still. It’s a big part of life.
So, how is this to be handled?
A lot of sources these days will say it’s toxic to refer to work people as “family”. I tend to agree. However, it’s good to treat people like family.
Bad bosses will expect you to bend over backwards for the company because that is what family does. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice your wellbeing for the “family”.
But what if leaders thought more about their work family like most people think of their real family?
Think about supporting people as healthy people first and they’ll be sure to give a healthy amount of effort to your company.
It will attract and retain top talent. 📈

The money is nice but it won’t give them want they want.
I’ve worked closely with money for 15 years. It’s hard to believe I studies broadcasting two decades ago. I hope it makes me a better podcaster but what about financial planner? Here me out…
I can count on one hand the amount of people (out of thousands I worked with) who’s final goal was a number in their bank account. 99.9% people had another desire in their life.
This tells me how important it is to help people find fulfillment in their work - more important that financial riches.
The money is table stakes. Pay people what they are worth - but after that, there’s a lot of work to do to build a generous culture of which people want to be a part.

Turnover can be good.
It can also be bad. You have to be careful how to initiate, prevent, and handle it.
I find that the best companies do all of these well. There are a lot of things you can do to affect change in your organization so it’s best to focus on individual situations.
This episode is about when and where to push and pull.
Ask yourself the question, “Who does this turnover benefit and who does it hurt?”, before making any decisions.

Negotiations can be generous - for real.
I’m not saying it’s easy but they can be. The more there are the better.
There are a lot of things in life and business that you’ll have to negotiate.
You know that pit in your stomach you feel when you have to negotiate, even argue, about something?
It’s a lousy feeling but it can be avoided with the right concentration.
I think about 7 things every time I go into a negotiation. They are all “P” words.
This episode covers each of these things and will teach you how to focus on them to be a better negotiator.
This is not tips, tricks, and hacks of how to win your negotiations. It’s to help you generate better outcomes for you and those you negotiate with in your work.

Yes, this episode is about “no”.
This is one of the first words we all learn. It serves so many different purposes when all you can do is indicate what you want and don’t want.
Things change as you mature, though. “No” begins to have more specific applications. It can indicate, interest, capability, desire, understanding, and many more things. It means a lot in work place culture.
If you’re trying to build a generous workplace culture, you have to understand how the word “no” can do so many things for your role and those around you. Using it well can keep things respectful, relatable, real, and organized. Use it wrong and things can get negative pretty quick.
I try to make “no” a consistent part of work these days. I think you’ll understand why after listening to the episode.

Everyone can affect culture.
I’m not saying that every can make culture or build it on their own. But everyone can make a difference.
In fact, I encourage everyone to try to. The strongest cultures are led by all. Leadership or certain individuals can set a tone but the more than contribute the better.
Sometimes, the best experiences come when someone who is not a leader in title displays some excellent cultural leadership in their given role. I learned this pretty early in my business career and have always felt it it’s important to encourage those who may not feel capable of contributing.
This episode is an encouragement to you, no matter your role, job, or career path.
You can do great things for your teammates.

When you treat people well matters the most.
I’m consistently surprised how companies only celebrate people when they’re at their best. What kind of message does that send?
“We only like you when you to something extraordinary.”
I don’t think that’s the idea you want you’re people to get. You want them to feel more valuable. They should feel good about their work even if it’s a rough day. They should feel safe taking a day off if something is not right at home.
Some companies have an “unlimited time off” policy. That’s great but do people feel ok actaully taking it?
Focus on appreciating people in all scenarios. I have some help for you to do this.

Your mission, vision, and values should be generous.
These three things are critical tools for a business. I can’t minimize whatsoever but I would like to stress the importance that generosity has on them. If you want to build great culture you should start as early as possible.
Generosity is a key point to include in these items that lead a company. You’re “why”, “what”, and “how” will go a long what if they have undertones of giving.
This episode highlights some reasons why the big three are important but it stresses the importance of the big one.
Listen in for insights on how to incorporate generosity in the drivers of your company.

Generosity is a mindset - not an event.
A generous workplace culture is a hard thing to build. I won’t sugar coat.
Great leaders have to work hard at fostering the right environment.
What’s easy usually builds the wrong environment. And speaking of easy, I could give you a bunch of red flags of what is a toxic leader or workplace culture. Instead, I thought I’d present some green flags - positive things.
You’ll love these things in a leader and if you are one yourself, try to implement them into your processes.

Today, I have the 5 that lead the list.
Some of these are talked about all the time and I fear you’re being taught they are special. To me, they are table stakes. They must be present in workplace culture for it be generous.
You’ll want to focus on the foundations before you try the advanced versions of anything. It takes time to build culture and you have to start with kindness, communication, authenticity, grace, and compassion.

Stop trying to be happy.
Joy is so much more important.
A state of joy is such a powerful thing because it is sustainable. I am a fan of happiness - just not as pursuit. You can’t expect to happy all the time so you are setting yourself up for failure and an unfulfilling pursuit.
The holiday season is known for being filled with joy but there is one thing I don’t like about this - these things don’t have to be saved for a one time during the year. You can celebrate and be joyful all year long.
I find that the more often you are in a state of joy the more chances you have to experience happiness. You are acutely aware of things that will make you happy. You also tend to make other people happy, which in turn, makes you happy. It’s a great loop to be.
I thought I’d share some “holiday” joys that really don’t have to be saved for only December.
Have a joyous and generous holiday season. 🙌🏼

Generosity is necessary for team success.
I like to think of it as the foundation of a terrific culture because it’s so encouraging to people. Anyone can jump on board and feel like they are important - contributing factor to the productivity and the encouragement.
There’s nothing more encouraging than encouraging someone, right?
This episode is about the most important reasons why a generous team is a winning team. I think you can have some periodic success without winning but the definition will likely be warped and it will be fleeting.
Sustained success is about everyone’s workplace experience. Don’t let me define it for you but this is at least a good measure. Rarely is a team filled with fulfilled people and be not effective at it’s mission.
Keep these concepts in mind as you build your generous workplace culture and let your team know about it.
Have a generous day with your team. 🤝

Great quotes can’t motivate you alone but they can be a great reminder of your purpose.
I’m a big fan of taking in the wisdom of others and applying it to your purpose.
This means you have to put the work in to develop why you do what you do. If you can find that internal source of motivation (it’s more sustaining), the relevant external forces will be much more apparent.
In other words, when we know our own “why”, we can easily identify that of others which we appreciate.
This episode is has 8 quotes that display this for me. I encourage you to think strongly about your own purpose and perhaps these quotes will also be great reminders for your.
Generosity is tough - we need all the support we can get. 💪

Generosity ain’t easy but it’s great for business.
People ask me how to be generous a lot - I say “like an subscribe” 😂. Seriously though, it takes a bit of work to be generous once. It takes a lot of work to make it a mindset.
There are many ways to execute but I came up with 4 that will quickly make an impact in your life an business.
A lot of people are trying to take as much as they can from their work.
You’ll want to try giving instead after you listen to this episode.
Have a generous rest of your workday. 📈

The best teacher in the world is generosity.
You might think that giving is a passive and one-sided experience but when you have the mindset it can be quite the opposite.
Some of the greatest business lessons I’ve learned have come from observing generosity and experiencing it’s power.
People pleasing can mask itself as generosity. This leads to complacency, taking advantage of others, and overall malaise. Be careful giving people what they want and not what they need.
Assuming it’s true generosity. You’ll have plenty of chances to learn how it can transform lives and businesses for good.
I have 3 main lessons I’ve learned over the years and I share them in this episode. This is not to say there aren’t other lessons or that these 3 are the most important to you. But either way, you’ll find value in what a generous culture will tell you about people.
And business is all about people, right?
Take some concise notes on this one (this comes up in the episode 😉)
Learn generously today. 😀

There are no shortcuts to productivity.
You have to put in the work. Seems easy, right?
The problem is the work isn’t always easy to determine. It’s hard to figure out what to do when there are a million sources trying to give you the easy way.
It’s best to recognize the myths and avoid them.
⚠ Don’t waste your time. Focus on your own definition of success. Take action and learn along the way.
The list of myths is robust as the day is long.
Here are 26 to get you started.
Have a generously productive day. 😀

Start by giving more than taking but don’t stop there.
There are all kinds of leadership. There are different prescribed styles - endless books and even more opinions. I think most are a positive influence but nothing is more important than being generous. In fact, I think being generous alone, makes you a leader.
It’s important to think about the things that make you generous more than the things that make you leader. Perhaps the title to thig episode is off. Maybe it should be “How to be Generous…so that You’ll Become a Leader”. Either way, I the mindset is critical. The actions come.
I have 4 important ways to act that will be key for acting as a generous leader - which will build a generous workplace culture.
*And there’s also a bonus! It’s not #5 😉
Have a generous day 😀

You have to be accurate and reliable to be authentic.
I don’t know any leaders that would disagree with that but why does it seem so hard to be those things?
It’s because we are very distracted by the world. Our greatest focus will produce our greatest results. If you’re trying to build a generous culture in your life and your workplace, you have to spend the time on these things.
Great leaders will radically chase after generosity. They will give when others expect them to take - and it’s not fake (nice rhyme, huh? 😉). That’s authentic.
I have 6 actions for you to take. Yes, actions. You have to do more than listen to me and write these things down. They are actions that will display your authenticity, inspire your team, and grow your business. 📈

See episode 88 with Robert Riopel. It’s too easy for stuff to become “shelf-help”.
Personal growth is an incredible collaborative process. You must commit to it but you can’t do it alone.
This episode provides 8 non-traditional habits that will help maximize your growth.
Focus on building just one of them and you’re guaranteed to get in the virtuous cycle of them all.

People work better when they work together.
A rock star employee (or leader) is nothing without a rockstar team.
Generous workplace cultures can be full of talented individuals but the team is way better than the sum of it’s parts.
A great culture attracts great people because they feel a collaborative and fulfilling environment. Leaders and team members alike each are a contributing part to the greater mission.
There are certain techniques you can use to foster the right environment and encourage people to use their gifts and skills to contribute to the greater good. I have 6 for you to implement in your business.
Have a collaborative day with your people. 🤝

Generous workplace cultures are never built by chance.
There must be intentional pieces to foster the proper environment. I have 8 I normally concentrate on and speak about.
This doesn’t mean there are only 8. In fact, I encourage you to come up with your own but these will be a good start regardless of your industry and unique position.
The focus is always on people and making sure they have everything they need (tangible and intangible) for two things:
Give people what they need and they’ll do what it takes to help themselves and their colleagues.
Note that each of the things on the list also applies to bosses, managers, leaders, and executives. None of these things escapes anyone in a company.
It’s a full group effort.
Have a generous day with your people. 🤝

The way you ask questions matters.
We all have our list of cliché pleasantries.
My favorite is, “What’s up?”. Do I really care what is up? I like to think so but it’s not always the case.
Generous workplace culture is full of people who really care about the well-being of others. They want to know how they can be helpful.
I have 3 questions that are generous twist on some more typical ones that are used in the workplace.
Great leaders will make people feel like they really care.
And you do really care, right?
I believe you do and that you’ll have generous day. 😜

You can’t fake it ‘til you make it.
Generosity, by definition, requires sincerity.
In some ways, this makes it easy to recognize generosity (at least internally). You know when you’re “in it”.
There are some terms that are popular out there that while they can be great things, they can also be not so great if done for the wrong reasons.
I’m covering 5 “imposters” of generosity in this episode. You might first think I’m crazy when you see how positive they can be. But that’s the thing. A lot of people don’t do these with truly selfless intentions.
Generosity is different. It requires selflessness.
You’ll want to build your workplace culture with the right intentions in mind; for effectiveness and also as a great example for your people.
Have a truly generous day. 😜

I was feeling hormonal. And I still am!
Generous workplace cultures really make you feel like you’re a part of something great. It’s a nice mix between responsibility and support.
Each company and group of people are different but one thing I can guarantee you’ll find in every room is hormones. There is no getting around it - and you don’t really want to.
Great leaders are highly aware of how people’s hormones are moving whether they know it or not. It’s a good idea to have a general understanding of how they work.
You’ll want to notice these 4 (and the bonus 5th 😉) so you’ll be a bit more adept to recognizing the experiences that your people are having. The idea is to create the best possible scenarios for your people to enjoy a fulfilling career and work journey.
When there is joy in the journey, there is fulfillment in the finish.
Let’s talk about some joyful hormones.
Have a hormonal and generous day. 😜

Stop trying to be happy. Seek joy instead.
You can’t always be happy. In fact, I don’t think you’d want to be. The valleys make the mountains, ya know?
I like to focus on being a in a joyful state of mind. This doesn’t mean everything will be perfect, it just means that you feel good about your place in this world. You are grateful for what you have and for the opportunity to share with others. You also know you’re able to grow.
Employment can be a funny thing. Most of us need it but many say they don’t want it (or at least in the form they have).

Actions speak louder than words, but words also work.
I often say that taking action is the most important thing to progress. You learn along the way even if you don’t find success quickly.
It’s also important to have encouraging words in our life and business. There will be times when you need a reminder of why you do what you do and why it’s important to build a generous workplace culture.
I was made aware of a great quote on generosity recently and it sparked me to look into what other people have said about the subject over the years. I found some great insight and thought I’d a share a couple other quotes I found to be incredible inspiring.
Let these quotes keep you focused when building your work place culture. Or, let me know which one(s) already do.

Avoid these mistakes at all costs.
I’m a big fan of “progress”. It’s more realistic than “perfection”. The biggest mistakes you can make when building a generous workplace culture will come during those times you’re trying to be perfect.
I have 4 critical things you must avoid so as to avoid pushing or stressing yourself and your team too much.
Make no mistake that generosity is hard. You will make mistakes. Just don’t make these (more than once, max). That will put you on the path to the workplace culture you desire. It will attract talented people and loyal customers.
Let me know if you believe there are other mistakes that must be avoided.

This episode is about my 3-step process for building a radically generous workplace culture.
There are a lot of variables in an individual organization and it’s critical to consider what makes your company unique. Yet, there are foundational practices that you must have when building the culture you desire.
People need to see you “giving” and understand why it mattes and how to participate.
My “ACE” process outlines three simple concepts that you can implement quickly to start building your generous culture today.
And speaking of that culture…

Do this before you give your employees a raise:
Give them something that will make them feel fulfillment and get better in the process.
A lot of business leaders and their companies try to attract top talent and retain who they have with financial incentives and bonuses. These things are fleeting - especially a results-based bonus.
It’s better for people to experience a sense of ownership and joy in the process.
There are a lot of intangible things you can give people. I came up with a short list of things that should exist even before a raise is earned.
This is a great start but there are plenty of other things. What else would you add?

And you want a sustainble business, right?
There are no shortcuts or tricks to building a scaling business and a generous workplace culture. You have to be disciplined over a long period of time.
This episode will make you think about what it takes to prepare for great things and execute great things. There are lessoned to be learned from working hard just to prepare for something and ultimately working hard when it’s time to execute said thing.
⚠ Spoiler alert: business isn’t a sprint, but maybe it includes a few?

What do shampoo and conditioner have to do with your business?
I’m not haircare expert but I like to have things conditioned before they’re shampooed - in business at least.
I had one of those shower revelation moments recently and trust me, I wasn’t singing.
I thought about the importance of running a clean business and how important it is to do from the inside out. You have to condition your people and your culture before you can display a squeaky-clean public image.
So, I’m not sure if you should use conditioner or shampoo first in the shower but I am sure that’s the right order when it comes to building a business and a generous workplace culture.
Stay clean and…

I dare you to push back on me with this one.
Most would agree that positivity is a good thing. It has to be real thought and that’s why identifying positive pressures is key. They enable you to stay active, alert, and intentional while also capitalizing on the force that is a positive mindset.
When you’re pressured, you perform and when you’re positive, you’re encouraged, empowered, and maximumly productive.
Wow, this is a positive explanation - fitting, huh?
The goal for this series (combined with last week’s episode) is for you to acknowledge pressure and its potential, eliminate the bad, and create the good.
Do it for yourself. Do it for your team.
Have a positively generous day.

What do you know about pressure?
There are a lot of sources that will tell you to avoid pressure these days. Seek comfort.
It’s a terrible idea.
You have to seek pressure - but the right type of pressure. And in order to know the right kind you have to identify the wrong kind.
This Part I of a two part series (perhaps longer) that I’m doing on pressure. It’s such a critical part of life and business and I believe that hose who master the art are those that will rise above.
A generous workplace culture is full of pressure. Don’t get it twisted. As the leader, you’ll need to identify the negative types and remove them from your organization.
Have a positively generous day.

Make change or someone else will.
The world is a complex place and your business is just the same. I’m a fan of simplicity but you can only push it so much.
You must be prepared to make adjustments as things change unexpectedly. There’s a difference between preparing for everything (which is impossible) and be ready to make a shift (or change) as needed.
The greatest leaders are able to make adjustments in their companies that others can clearly understand. The team is able to execute and believes they’ll be successful because the leader demonstrates an ability to pivot with poise and recalibrate with resilience.
This episode will teach you how to anticipate the unexpected and build a generous workplace culture in the process.

You’ll attract the top talent in your industry by making them feel they’ll have more than enough to contribute to the cause the moment they walk in the door.
Great workplace cultures allow people to feel an abundance of support and resources. Scarcity in a given area is acknowledged but little time is wasted talking about it. The abundance of resources is sure lead to a quick solution.
Leaders will serve their company and coworkers best when giving people a great feeling before they’re even hired. You’ll want to concentrate on giving people the everything they need to be successful and fulfilled.

People need to know what you think.
A lot of leadership is about letting people express themselves. A big part of that is how you express yourself to them. It’s critical for a conversation.
Some leaders think feedback should be “found”. In other words, it’s up to employees to figure out how their work is perceived. I think this is a terrible approach. Everyone has a different perception of each situation. You have to make sure that people get the feedback they need to improve; positive or negative.
Generous feedback is about giving people everything they need to contribute the maximum amount they can to the cause. This allows them to feel the most ownership over their work and the most fulfillment.
The more generous your feedback, the more enjoyable is the workplace environment. Keep giving feedback.

Love is the catalyst for many other things in life and business.
I wouldn’t consider myself a romantic, but I do find love in a lot of places.
It signifies commitment, compassion, and appreciation among other things. Even of them are great characteristics for a leader and a business culture.
You can’t be generous without a form of love.
I thought a lot about love recently because of a wedding I attended. It made me think of why there was such a big celebration and why so many people were involved. Was it just for the food and dancing?
Here are some thoughts on how the things we celebrate at weddings can help us grow our businesses.

You can’t expect everything that is unexpected.
If generosity will make you “rich” and the “riches are in the niches”…
…then generosity is in all the niches.
Great leaders are able to understand the work experience of their people. They might have a prominent leadership style but they are able to adapt to others’ needs. They can’t rely on a niche style to get them through.
A niched leader is a limited leader.
I used the transitive property to identify that you should be able to morph into each team members unique, niched, psyche to help them have the most enjoyable work experience. In other words, you can and need to use generosity in all the niches to build the workplace culture of growth you desire.
Have a generous day.

You can’t expect everything that is unexpected.
I believe strongly in the virtue of resilience. It’s critical for results in business and in life.
Resilience is not expressed in times where the expected has happened. The key to expecting the unexpected is not planning for every possible scenario. This is impossible and crippling for your people and your businesses.
Instead, you have to expect to “feel” the unexpected from time to time. These are the times when you express resilience.
Take the time to plan what you can but don’t sacrifice you and your team’s ability to react and think on the fly.

Listening is the #1 skill a generous leader needs.
There are many types of listening. So many have been studied that it can be overwhelming to learn about this critical skill.
I've noticed that certain types of listening are of high important to servant leaders and generous cultures. I did some research and came up with 4 different kinds of listening that I felt were at the top of the list.
There are plenty of other kinds and I encourage you to research on your own and learn which forms are significant to you. Please share them with me as you like.
For now, you can start with these four and build a culture of generosity in your business.
Have a generous day that's full of good listening.

I don’t recommend gambling but this is a bet you should take.
There are plenty of reasons to include generosity in your workplace culture but I have 5 that came to mind immediately when I thought of this topic.
They key to all of them is that they are best experienced in community. This is why cultures of generosity attract top talent and loyal customers.
Think about these things as you try to develop systems and processes in our business. My primary recommendation is that you start from the beginning or as early as possible. It should be part of the culture as people come on board. In fact, they should be overwhelmed by its presence upon engagement.
I’d love to know your experience with these things. Be sure to let me know.
Have a generous day.

You can plan your energy.
I have three types of energy that I consider throughout my day.
The first is external. This is the stuff you can find to pump you up for a short period of time. It comes from other people.
The second is created internal. These are things that you do that result in an energized state (i.e. a workout).
The final is inherent internal. This type of energy is most relizble and can be well predicetd. It shuold be used consistently during those times where you're otherwise lacking energy.
This episode dives into how each of these should be used and provides some suggestions for buidling a calendar around your energy.

Every generous leaders needs to use these 3 things:
Each is uniwque but they all work together for good. I break down their definitions, what they mean and in action, and how they effect each party involved.
Make no mistake that you can't build a generous workplace culture without these as part of the environment. This episode will help you ensure just that.

Never start the day with planning. Start the day with a plan.
I posted about my Sunday afternoon routine on LinkedIn and people thought I was a planning freak. Excuse the hyperbole but I think it felt like I either spend my whole Sunday planning my weerk or I have this amazing skill to set up 60 hours of work in 10 minutes.
It might be a little of both but the key thing is that I don't overplan. Yet, I do recap what I've already planned the day before I execute. This is a huge force for making my high leverage time and energy most efficient.
I describe what this routine is not in the episode before explaining exactly what it is.
It helps me hit the ground running on a Monday morning because I know the actions that have to be taken before I'm ready to take them. Let this supercharge your upcoming week.
Have a generous day.

Not all biases are bad, but many of them are.
I did a lot of research this week on the different types of bias and found that the overwhelming majority of them are things yo uwant to avoid.
I'm convinced that if you avoid these 30 and other you've identified that are specific to your buisness, you'll grow.
My own positive bias towards generosity tells me that you can supercharge your growth by focusing on giving.
This episode will offer you some examples of how these negative bias can affect your workplace culture and offers some simple steps to avoid them. Start with one bias that exists and work to remove in. Than, move on to another and another and so on. Before you know it, you'll have a much more generous culture.

Generosity is never a lie.
There will be times where you are tempted to tell a “little white lie” to give someone some motivation. Don’t do it. It’s lazy.
There’s a concept called benevolent deception. It applies in many areas of life - professional and personal. People use it in attempt to benefit someone else despite not telling them the truth.
Workplace cultures just don’t lend themselves to long term sustainability if the truth isn’t apparent. Yes, the truth hurts but it’s worth it.
Praise people for what they can control rather than for what they can’t, or even worse, give them false praise.
This episode will teach you why you must tell the truth to build a generous workplace culture and how to do it even when things don’t go as planned.
Have a generous day.

I'm back from my retreat and no longer anxious.
In fact, I'm incredibly encouraged. I thouht I was headed for a 72 hour detox from work, digital technology, and business related stress. I got a lot of that but I didn't "escape" work completely. I learned a cirital lesson about generous cultures.
They include people who receive well.
These are the peple who do a terrific job of making sure others know how much their effort is appreciated.
I spend the first two days of the trip being poured into by a group of genltemen that expecthing nothing in return. I realized I needed to do a better job of expressing my feelings on day three (and they kept serving relentlessly).
These are my thoughts on how your business and personal environments can grow with receiving well.

I'm going on a 3 day retreat and I'm anxious.
I'll be there already by the time you listen to this but I had to be honest about what I am feeling.
I know it's going to be good. I know it's going to be challenging. I know I'll come out better.
So, why am I nervous?
I often say that fear is a liar. This is because it usually indicates the unknown - what we're really afraid of. You might think I'm not ignorant based on my statements above but despite knowing some facts, I don't know exactly what is going to happen. In fact, I know very little. I don't even know where I'm going. I'm getting picked up one evening and taken back (hopefully) 3 days later.
Pray for me. Wish me luck.
I'll be back with a report next week.
Have a generous day.

Appreciation is something that must be felt.
Great leaders know that they people they work with must be consistently reminded of how much they and their work are appreciated. This attracts better talent and better customers.
There are many ways to say it but perhaps few to assure it is felt.
An additional benefit of expressing appreciation is that it also helps the person who expresses focus on that which is good in the moment.
I had a recent experience while boarding a plane that reminded me of this. I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable about the whole situation.
Here's what happened...

Generosity is not just a feel good activity. It's a business building culture.
The years of talking with generous business owners and recording Speaking of Impact have taught me this. I didn't set out to learn more about building businesses in this venture but you never know what you're going to pick up on a journey.
I would suggest just setting out with a target but being open to what finds you.
Generosity found me at age 18 (listen to episode 1 of the show for a detailed story) but what found me recently is the generous workplace culture.
It's the application of generosity in a business sense. And when you apply it, things grow.
The best entrepreneurs I've met and served have shown me that giving and philanthropy are "accomplished" or "completed". They are "felt" and "lived".
I intent to dive deeper into these concepts as the show moves on. I'll have more of my own insight for you and continue to find great guests to inspire generosity and teach you how to make an impact.
Have a generous day.

Payment processing can be a philanthropic effort.
There are trillions of dollars in payments processed every year in the world. What if a portion of these went to worthy causes? Well, a portion already does but it could be more.
Processing payments is huge business because how else are businesses supposed to be in business?
Some organizations have specific charitable events or organizations they support but it would be even better if they could involve their customers in giving opportunities. Give Credit is a payment processing firm that gives a portion of its revenue directly to charities. Duncan Bruce is their leader with a generous mindset. Business is more than just processing payments to him. It’s a chance to give to people in need and get everyone else involved.

Generosity is good business!
How is that? Because giving is a prophet center - or at least it should be according to Peter Baines.
This is a strong take that could rub some people the wrong way. We've spent the better part of the last three years talking about selflessness and servant leadership. So, how does giving to receive fit in?
It’s not that you are giving just to get something back. It's knowing that helping others is going to be good for the world and for you. Peter started his career working in forensic evidence and he certainly has evidence that we can give with the expectation of getting in return. He puts his money where his mouth is with some incredible charity work and alongside that work is his speaking and consulting that show organizations how to grow with giving. Get ready to experience your own growth.

Generosity must be taught.
This was the key theme of my conversation with Brian Kluth. Brian is the Generosity mobilizer and he comes with 40+ years of experience helping people be better givers.
It’s not surprising that Brian is such a leader - a true servant leader. All of his efforts these days are to help other people have a better experience here on Earth and even someday after their time here is done. He made me think a lot about radical generosity. He’ll make you think, “What am I doing with what I have to make someone else’s world better?” It’s a healthy challenge. Get ready to feel a deep sense of purpose.

Leaders are measured by their connections and not their title.
The best organizations are lead by people who take ownership of more than their own performance. They are inspired to help others be successful knowing that if they are, they will find their own success.
Shana Francesca had an extremely challenging upbringing (in an evangelical cult) that taught her about the pitfalls of poor leadership at a very young age. Most would agree that children should not have to experience abusive leadership but Shana has turned those experiences into a career helping people and organizations build and lead diverse teams. She believes that diversity is paramount for success and profitability in business.

Recently, there is a deeper focus on purpose. It’s not always about the numbers. A good money manager has to provide good returns but what does a good financial planner have to provide?
Jim Grace is the Director of Wealth Management at Silver Pine Capital. His focus is to help people understand their “why” and how to live out their purpose with what they have. Money is a tool that can be used wisely or not and it’s a matter of aligning it with your goals that determines your success. You can build riches but that doesn’t mean you have wealth.

We’ve said before that giving is contagious. It applies to many aspects of life. The more intentional you are about what and how you give, the more effect you will have. It can be challenging to dedicate the time for deep thought related to the subject. It’s much easier to stroke a check or even sign up to volunteer at a local event that is already organized. If we all spent a little more time researching how to get involved in the things that we can be most effective, the world will be an even better place.
Research isn’t always easy but it’s necessary. The philanthropic world has plenty of data. We should use it to determine the best ways for us to help our fellow humans. Sharna Goldseker and Michael Moody have each had extensive careers working with foundations, donors, and other generous people. They each desire to make a better connection between giving people and needy causes. Their research found some interesting things about how the current generation wants to do positive impact. You’ll want to note their findings to help you use your gifts and skills for the most good.

Where you invest these things will say a lot about what you think is important. Or does it? What is the story that you would want to tell about yourself? Many people have their investments (of either type) on auto-pilot and don’t consider what they are actually supporting. Today’s information age makes it much easier to educate ourselves about what it is that we are investing in.
Time is certainly a valuable resource. In decades past, it might have been hard to research where our financial investments go. You might have had a employer sponsored retirement plan that was invested in a default fund. This may or may not have been a good financial investment for you, but what did it do for the world? Dan Katz is the the Co-Founder of Amberwave Partners and investment firm that has developed a new concept to consider - JSG investing. Listen in as Dan explains this new concept that could help you reach your impact goals.

We all have things that we get excited about. Unfortunately, we don’t always seek them. It seems obvious, but the world can often distract us from what is most meaningful. The most you concentrate on what is, the more you’ll find yourself making a positive impact.
Bran Katanec is energy aware. Although, he would tell you that wasn’t always the case. He grew up in war-torn Croatia and there were times that his life was troublesome. He credits music with saving his life and it is that outlet that allows him to find fulfillment these days. He coaches people to help them find what brings them the most energy and use keen awareness to find it. This episode will help you concentrate on what is most important to you.

Our podcast is all about using your gifts and skills to make a positive impact in the world. We can all do something. But what if we all did the MOST we possibly could? What if it was prioritized above all else?
When you operate from a mindset of abundance, it’s a lot easier to put giving first. Everyone’s “enough” is going to look a little different but whatever it is, finding it leads to finding the most good that you can do. Today’s episode covers today’s wealth gap (the current need for positive impact) and some steps to slim that margin (the actions we should take). Marina Feffer co-founded Generation Pledge in order to help people give as much as they possibly can (more than just money) to positive impact.

It takes some effort to be effectively generous. You have to identify causes that are important to you, develop a relationship, support them monetarily and physically, and measure progress. Communication is important just like many areas of life. Unfortunately, it’s not always prioritized in the impact space.
All stakeholders in a generous contingent should be heard whether it’s one person or a huge family. Sybil Ackerman-Munson has extensive experience in the non-profit industry and the world of generosity. We all have a different mix of creativity. Some are visual, some are audible, and still others take on another form. There is no right or wrong way to do it. Authors certainly have a way with words but they also have a special storytelling gift. We all appreciate a good story and there’s something about true stories that really hit home.
Sarah Schott is the author of Saving Society with God, Nature, & Music. This is a pretty bold statement. Sarah is able to combine her life experiences in a story format that is incredibly educational and entertaining. She has a perspective on life and hope that we can all hope to experience. Those are the words of one of our guests this week. John Cronin is an entrepreneur at heart. When he had graduated school and was looking for something to do in life he couldn’t find anything that fit his skillset - so he made something. Isn’t artificial intelligence fascinating? There are so many powerful tech platforms out there that it’s hard to keep up. That’s no excuse though. If you want to win in business or in the impact space, you must be on the cutting edge of technology. You and everyone on your team can’t learn every process but they can’t complete them efficiently and effectively. That’s where the best technology comes in.
Raj Sundarason is the DAP Strategist. He helps organizations make digital transformations. It’s not just digitization. Success is something that everyone wants - but do they seek it? You can’t overestimate effort and as impactmakers we can never forget that. We spend a lot of time visioning and dreaming of the positive impact that we can make in the world. We see people in need and dream of helping. This is noble, even necessary. However, what good are the dream if we don’t put the work in to achieve them?
You should never limit our ability to achieve. You should also maximize all of your opportunities. Know that not everyone will play out as you desire, but they all are valuable whether as you expect, a learning experience, or a chance to find another opportunity. Today’s guest is DC Glenn, The Brain Supreme, from Tag Team. Yes, he’s a DJ and rapper, but he’s an inspiring business person and lifelong learner. We are all leaders in our lives whether it is by title or by default. Some of the most recognized leaders didn’t set out to have that role. They were passionate people who found a strong purpose. You might say they settled into their positions but settling is far from a leader’s mentality. In fact, leaders seek challenges and help others overcome them. This yields growth.
Working with sled dogs in the wilderness sounds like challenging work. This was one of the challenges that led Iggy Perillo to her career in leadership development. Taking care of yourself is among the most important things in life but it isn’t always that easy to do. High achievers tend to work hard at making something great or taking care of others and fail to consider their own situation. Burnout isn’t enjoyable but sometimes it’s necessary. The body shuts down and doesn’t allow you to continue down a destructive path.
Most impactmakers have experienced some form of burnout because we care so much about our work. We care about doing great things with the gifts and skills we have. However, we can’t do them if we are without the energy we need to be effective. If you are burnt out, you maybe have to take some time off. It will seem counterproductive but it’s absolutely necessary to get back to the effectiveness you desire. Many are equipped to complete one or two of them but struggle with the other(s).
