SCHOOL HAS NOW OFFICIALLY OPENED FOR MILLIONS OF CHILDREN. Nearly nine out of 10 LGBT students (86.2 percent) experience harassment at school because of their sexual orientation, and 60.8 percent feel unsafe, according to the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s (GLSEN) 2007 National School Climate Survey. The 2015 National School Climate Survey will come out in fall of 2016 as noted on the GLSEN website. These numbers are alarming but what is on the horizon is more alarming in a good way. California and Georgia have open schools that are geared toward the LGBTQ student offering LGBTQ students a safe, supportive environment -- one they can choose or decline -- can save lives and be an important ingredient in an overall recipe for positive change for all youth, including and especially LGBTQ youth and their allies.” More importantly is that in October 2016, the LGBTQ Community Initiative at Teach for America will celebrate two years. The Initiative will be a part of the Summit where it is open to LGBTQ and allied corps members, alumni, staff, partners, and students. They are sponsored by Teach for America’s LGBTQ Community Initiative and participating regions. LGBTQ Summits will drive the work of engaging teachers and leaders in partnership with regional and national organizations that focus on supporting LGBTQ students and educators. Joining Can We Talk for REAL will be Tim’m West, Senior Managing Director, LGBTQ Community Initiative, Strategic Initiatives & Partnerships of Teach America. Tim’m will lead the conversation about LGBTQ students in schools and what they go through once they enter the buildings every day.
We previously had couples from the Chicago area who agreed to join us and juts talk raw about marriage and their feelings about issues that affect us all no matter who you marry. Sb is a Patient Care Technician (PCT) at DaVita. She also studied Health Care at South Suburban College. Lastly we have a couple that also are married and are business partners. Interesting combination we have the owners of TnPcleaningprofessionals Are Us joining us tonight. School starts soon and for many it will be a new experience with a group of classmates they have never met and they know nothing about. For those returning to school there is the in crowd, the jocks, the brainy students and the TARGETS, and not just the new kids in schools but “friends”, “neighbors” or just the “outsiders”. Middle school and High school are supposed to be the best years of your life. Its where you meet those lifelong friends, be popular, play sports, become a good debater, take up politics, find puppy love, go to Prom and graduate- beginning life. Hundreds of students will begin school and many of those who accept and begin living their truth as LGBTQ, or is diagnosed with bi-polar or a mental disease will become those TARGETS and will commit Suicide. ALERT: There is a NEW BULLY in town and it is called Social Media better known as Face Book. It becomes the hidden fist that strikes you, the vicious words (gay, trans, bi-polar) that degrades you, the gun that shoots you and the knife that stabs you in the heart. As school, starts back parents need to look, listen and be proactive in conversations with your children. Young people if you stay silent and allow someone else to be bullied you can also carry the label of bully, because you are not part of the solution.
It’s been a little past the year mark since the landmark Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges, decided the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Every day during this month, Muslims around the world spend the daylight hours in a complete fast. In 2016 Ramadan begins in the evening of Sunday, June 5th and ends in the evening of Tuesday, July 5th.
Muslims currently make up approximately 0.9% of the U.S. adult population. If children are included, the Muslim population in the United States totals 2.75 million Muslims in the country.
Although the exact number of LGBTQ Muslims in the United States or globally is not known, openly gay Imams are emerging to help those struggling to live openly and authentically in harmony with their faith.

He actively promotes understanding and awareness of issues of racial, gender and sexual equality as understood in the UN Declaration of Human Rights within and beyond Muslim communities.
Each year on Memorial Day we remember members of our community – family, friends, neighbors even strangers – who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. We visit their graves, hold memorials, march in parades and thank them for their service but what about the remaining 364 days of the year.After a successful career as an entrepreneur in Michigan, Tiera Craig moved to New York and joined the US Department of Veterans Affairs in New York. Besides providing management analysis, she provides a welcoming “Out and Proud” face for LGBTQ veterans visiting the facility.Tiera has volunteered at various non-profit organizations across the country. As a member of Kappa Xi Omega Sorority, Inc., she is surrounded by successful professional women, some of whom are active military and veterans themselves.Tiera recently attended the 5th Annual OutServe-SLDN LGBT Military Leadership Conference in Washington DC. OutServe-SLDN brings together actively serving and retired service members, advocates and experts to discuss issues, concerns, and future planning for the LGBT military community. Tiera will share her observations from the OutServe-SLDN Conference. She will also talk about her experiences as a membership in Kappa Xi Omega and how it drives her commitment to serve with the Rainbow Veterans Project.
Founded by Tiera Craig, The Rainbow Veterans Project aims to provide resource, advocacy, and training to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Veterans.
May is Lupus Awareness Month! Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints and/or organs inside the body). African-Americans are three times more likely than Caucasians to develop lupus and with greater severity. Black females disproportionately are burdened by lupus. Joining CAN WE TALK FOR REAL ,May 25, 2016 is Sharon L. Harris, founder and president of Lupus Detroit. Ms. Harris will share her journey from diagnosis to Lupus Warrior raising awareness about the disease and advocating for others stricken with Lupus so they could also not just survive but thrive.A month after graduating from Florida A & M University, she was diagnosed with discoid and systemic lupus. Soon after the diagnosis, she had a “what if tomorrow is never promised” moment. Shortly after the lupus went into remission, she passed two rigorous interviews and six weeks of training and became a flight attendant for Mesaba Airlines. Her reasoning was if lupus was going to attack her, it would have to find her on the beaches of Aruba or high above the Eiffel tower. In late 2008 threatened her health and well-being. Sharon experienced a lupus flare so great that her doctor told her there was nothing left that he could do. He then patted her on her back and told her “good luck”. Within a year, Sharon raised more than one million dollars in pledges, in-kind donations and sponsorships for the organization. In 2009, her Lupus Walk team raised almost $5,000 for lupus research. This led her to be a sought after lupus advocate, participating as a guest on radio and television. She has travelled to Washington D.C to lobby Congress and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on behalf of those with lupus. The genetics of lupus in minority populations is starting to get the attention it deserves in part due to the efforts of Warriors like Sharon L. Harris.
The relationship between women is based on a complexity of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. The mother-daughter bond has a powerful impact on women’s relationships. This relationship of dependence and nurturance, engulfment, power and control, is what gets re-activated in same sex relationships between women. This is where the nature of the mother-daughter bond can show itself in subtle, yet, powerful ways. Difficulties can arise when both parties in the relationship struggle to get their individual needs met.
Wednesday Night, May 18th joining CAN WE TALK FOR REAL, co-host Michelle E Brown and Teresa (Terry Boi) Jackson will be Bonnie Harrison well-known and dynamic Licensed Psychotherapist who frames her work around an African, and Indigenous Spiritualities Paradigm. The focus of her work is on healing what’s broken as a result of historical harm, childhood trauma, and ongoing socio-political stressors and wounding. She is known as a developer and facilitator of wellness-centered learning experiences for both women and men, and gender-diverse people of African descent. However, her training and healing models are designed to benefit members of various ethno-cultural groups.
Paradoxically, the needs one wants to be satisfied most-nurturance and dependence-become a struggle for power and control, often resulting in the thing most feared, abandonment and loss.Gaining a clearer understanding of same gender loving relationships between women, can be best accomplished by taking a look at our own mothers’ relationships with their mothers, and the portrait of their lives within an ethno-cultural, and bio-psychosocial context.
Bonnie will discuss the approaches she uses to better ensure self-healing and wellness in our communities. Her work is informed by her use of the technologies found in African and Indigenous Spiritualities, in combination with some western therapeutic interventions, and the creative arts.
The Strength of My Soul: Stories of Sisterhood, Triumph and Inspiration includes stories that also highlight mothers and their struggles. As noted about the book women are the bearers of life. Women breathe live, live life and love life with all its turns in the roads. This week Can We Talk for REAL will continue to celebrate Mothers in our own unique way. We will have a mother and daughter conversation with Dr. Carole Hysmith and her daughter Lenore about their mother/daughter relationship and how it has formed to be what it is today.Mothers have always been the back bone of the African American Community. So image you have a daughter that identifies as a same gender loving woman. Joining “Can We Talk for REAL”, Wednesday, May 11th to continue celebrating Mothers will be Dr. Carole Hysmith. Dr. Hysmith will take us through her journey “ The Union between a Mother and Her Same-Gender Loving Daughter” and how she and her daughter were able to grow in this new relationship once they started the conversation and put in the work.
Dr Hysmith talks about how her world was rocked when she discovered her daughter was a lesbian. However, over thirty years later she now realizes that knowing about her daughter has enriched her own character and their relationship. Listen to her own words.

The Black Trans Advocacy Conference (BTAC) is not just a convention, it's a joyful family reunion. This year the gathering celebrated its 5th anniversary with attendees from across the country and as far away as Jamaica. Each day transgender people are faced with bias that affects all areas of life. According to Injustice at Every Turn: A Look at Black Respondents in the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, Black trans and gender non-conforming people reported experiencing the highest levels of discrimination of all transgender people based on the combination of anti-transgender bias with structural and individual racism.

Earlier this month the North Carolina Legislature passed HB2 a discriminatory law taking aim at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and especially the Transgender communities. There are several things involved in HB2 but the one that has gotten the most attention is the requirement that anyone using a public or school multiuser bathroom must use the bathroom assigned to the gender on that person’s birth certificate.This sweeping law reverses ordinance that Charlotte, NC that extended some rights to people who are gay or transgender and nullified local ordinances around the state that would have expanded protections for the LGBT community.In the wake of the passage of North Carolina’s HB2, nearly 70 clergy from several faith traditions pledged to do whatever they can to overturn North Carolina’s controversial new law. The Rev. Robin Tanner, lead minister at the Piedmont Unitarian Universalist Church chairs the interfaith Charlotte Clergy Coalition for Justice.Joining CAN WE TALK FOR REAL cohosts Teresa (Terry Boi) Jackson and Michelle E. Brown will be representatives from the Coalition to talk about HB2 and their commitment to fight this discriminatory law including Rev. Robin Tanner, Rev. Dawn Flynn and Bishop Tonyia Rawls.The clergy group, which includes two transgender ministers, will organize an anti-HB2 rally on April 24 and have pledged to financially support the lawsuit recently filed by the ACLU to challenge HB2.The Charlotte Clergy Coalition for Justice, called out to North Carolinians from the shared moral grounding of love for neighbor. The Coalition employs the methods of nonviolence and the practices of peace in the pursuit of justice and equity in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.
APRIL is SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH. Around the world activists and survivors of sexual assault are participating in Take Back The Night events, marches, rallies and vigils as a protest and direct action against rape and other forms of sexual, relationship and domestic violence. On WEDNESDAY APRIL 13, 2016, Kalimah Johnson, Founder and CEO of the SASHA CENTER returns to the show and, will join CAN WE TALK FOR REAL cohosts Teresa (Terry Boi) Jackson and Michelle E. Brown to talk about Sexual Assault Awareness, SASHA CENTER’s recent Take Back The Night event and the CENTER’s on going work.
The SASHA CENTER is a culturally specific Sexual Assault Peer Educational Support Group that provides services for self-identified survivors of rape. SASHA’s programs focus on the primary prevention of sexual violence, educating the public about rape, raising awareness and providing free and confidential support groups to self-identified survivors of sexual assault. Sexual violence is a major public health, human rights and social justice.

Wednesday March 30, 2016 playwright, curator, visual artist, poet, writer, spoken word artist, performer, and trans activist Andrea Jenkins.Jenkin's work is concerned with the interplay of words, mediums and genres that can be mashed together to create a new narrative. She views her work as collage, working primarily with paper and mixed media as a visual form of curation. Taking various images that have been artfully produced for the purpose of consumerism and mixing them with social justice messages and images brings attention to the issues of inequality. Andrea calls South Minneapolis home. She was awarded the Bush Fellowship in recognition of her extraordinary achievement and potential. In addition to the Many Voices and Bush Leadership Fellowships, she was awarded Naked Stages and Verve Grants in 2010. In 2002 she received the Loft Mentor Series Award for Poetry. Since 2006 she has co-curated the Queer Voices series at Intermedia Arts, which is the longest running GLBT reading series in the country. Her work has been published in several newspapers, journals, and anthologies. She holds a B.A. in Human Services, a M.S. in Community Economic Development, and a MFA in Creative Writing from Hamline University. When she’s not lending her skills to almost every area of the Twin Cities art scene, she is the Minneapolis 8th Ward Senior Policy Aid in the office of Councilwoman Elizabeth Glidden.
Natasha “T” Miller is African American, lesbian woman, dedicated LGBTQ activist, author and poet, raised on the west side of Detroit. The Artists Inn is located in the historical east village neighborhood of Detroit. The Inn will provide quality yet inexpensive lodging for visiting artists, while providing them an opportunity to give back to their host community. The Artists Inn will provide jobs to local Detroiters, artistic opportunities, knowledge, and healthy food alternatives. March is NATIONAL READING MONTH. In celebration of National Reading Month CAN WE TALK FOR REAL co-hosts Teresa (Terry Boi) Jackson and Michelle E. Brown welcome LaWayne Childrey to the show to talk about his book “Peeing Back the Layers: A Story of Trauma, Grace and Triumph.” His book was selected as one of the top six autobiographies of 2015 by the Colorado Independent Publishers Association.
This book tells Childrey’s story - how a troubled, black, gay youth from the Deep South grew up to become one of the most respected news journalists in the country.
Childrey is also a recipient of the national Edward R. Murrow Award for Journalistic Excellence. The award is given by the Radio Television Digital News Association honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the electronic news profession.
Childrey has also won numerous Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters awards for his reporting with Mississippi Public Broadcasting. In 2014 the Alabama Community College System selected Childrey as its most outstanding alumnus in the institution’s 50-year history. The ACCS awarded a $5,000 scholarship in Childrey’s name to a deserving Alabama high school senior. During the same year, Childrey was named alumnus of the year for Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham.
In his compelling autobiography Childrey demonstrates his ability to persevere during times of immense adversity.

It is estimated that over 60 million families are caring for an aging or disabled person at home. At least 80-90% of caregivers are women. There is no question that most of the burden falls on women for the physical and financial impacts of caregiving. As parents live longer, more women are feeling the crunch.
What does it cost women caregivers to take care of their aging parents?
On a very special CAN WE TALK FOR REAL co-hosts Teresa (Terry Boi) Jackson and Michelle E. Brown share their personal experiences caring for aging loved ones. They will be sharing the joys, challenges, stresses and supports (or lack of support) they have received as well as the unique situations they have encountered being lesbians in their caregiver roles. Joining Terry Boi and Michelle in this important discussion is Jacqueline Boyd is the owner of The Care Plan, the country's first health care management company devoted to LGBTQ individuals and communities. She is passionate about identifying personalized solutions to health and aging challenges.
The Care Plan is the brainchild of Jacqueline Boyd, a long time aging specialist and LGBTQI advocate. Jacqueline’s passion for health and aging started when she was a Certified Nursing Assistant in college. Working in nursing homes gave her a deep appreciation for the struggles many face throughout the aging process. The swift physical and cognitive changes, the lack of clear resources and advice left many families in the dark about how to best support their loved ones, and at times guilty for the choices they had made. It was here that seeds for The Care Plan were planted, in empathy for the pain and uncertainty many clients and their families experienced.

Marcus Dargan is an Adjunct Lecturer of the Communication Studies Department at Baruch and Department of Speech, Communications, and Theatre Arts at Borough of Manhattan Community College, where he received an A.S. in Theatre. He also holds a B.A. in Theatre and a M.S.Ed. in Educational Theatre from City College of New York. He is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of NuAFrikan Theatre, and Editor and Contributor of Down Stage Pass. Performance artist, producer, and CCNY alum Zachary Frater will be presenting on the notorious 2013 webseries "Got 2 B Real: The Diva Variety Show" created by YouTuber @PattiLaHelle. Its all-star cast of contemporary black R&B and Pop icons reading each other down has captivated LGBT viewers since its inception and remains an intriguing work of media appropriation, meme culture, and drag humor. Zachary will be discussing the program's inherent queer sensibility and appeal to the millenial generation.

Willy Wilkinson an award-winning Asian American transgender writer, public health consultant, cultural competency trainer, public speaker, and spoken word performer Willy Wilkinson. He is the author of the book Born on the Edge of Race and Gender: A Voice for Cultural Competency. We will talk about Wilkinson’s personal journey, explain cultural competency for those working in and with the LGBTQ community.

In the early hours of Saturday, Aug. 8, Amber Monroe of Detroit became the 12th transgender woman of color to be killed in 2015 Amber was only 20 years old and a student at Michigan's Wayne State University. She was also a good friend of Bre Campbell a Detroit and national activists for Transgender rights. She knew Monroe from the Horizons Project, which specializes in HIV/AIDS prevention and care for adolescents at Wayne State University. The loss of Amber and the other transgender woman murdered in 2015 (22 as of October,2015 most under age 37) moved Campbell beyond grief to action with the Trans Sistas of Color Project.

TSOCP was established in 2015, in response to the growing numbers of Trans murders. This group of concerned community activists endeavor to uplift, impact and influence the lives of transgender women of color in Detroit. Executive Director Campbell explained that “TSOCP fills in the gap, creates space and influences Trans women of color through programming, resources, services and engagement in order to improve our quality of life.” TSCOP’s Trans centric programming, services and resources are built around the goal of creating a 24 hour drop in center for Trans women of color in Detroit.

It has become the norm that when you turn on the news before the month is over another young black person has been killed at the hands of a police officer somewhere in the country. Recently Chicago has been in the news and something different happened. Out of this a new civil rights movement has emerged and it is organized and its membership is all young people between the ages of 18-35. They have strategically gathered together and collaborated across the country showing support in states where violence has emerged against a community for years. They have been there right under our very noses. The news coming out of major cities have awaken Black Youth Project 100 (BYP 100) an activist member-based organization of Black 18-35 year olds, dedicated to creating justice and freedom for all Black people. We do this through building a collective focused on transformative leadership development, non-violent direct action organizing, advocacy and education. BYP per their has trained young black activists in direct action grassroots organizing skills, so they can build the power we need to transform our communities. They have mobilized young Black leaders on issues including ending criminalization and dismantling the prison industrial complex, expanding and securing LGBT and women’s rights. They have and are running campaigns using on the ground and digital tactics towards the goal of ending the criminalization of Black youth, racial profiling and police brutality. Joining us will again be Matt Boykin of the Chicago Branch of BYO100. He is a member of Black Youth Project 100 here in Chicago. Originally from the Suburbs of Atlanta, Maxx has organized for a wide arrange of issue based, political and union organizing over the last few years in Georgia, Virginia and in the last two years in Illinois around the Affordable Care Act, Fight for 15, Movement for Black Lives and fighting for those living with and communities most effected by HIV.
Every day from 1981 people have lived and died from AIDS. But for the same number of years communities have gone without the proper education to understand the disease and prevent the spread of it. Over the course of the past 30 years, facts have emerged that have put the AIDS myths to bed. Treatments have been developed to allow people to live full lives. It is important to know who can catch it, how it is passed on and what you can do to help stop the spread of AIDS. GET TESTED!!! PROTECT YOURSELF!!!
Joining CWT4R co –host Michelle and Terry Boi will be Maximillian Mathis Boykin, Community Organizer for the Chicago Ads Foundation. Maxx a Veteran of the US Navy during his young life has been on the political scene as a volunteer to educate and help people better understand laws and issues that affect them from voting to the importance of testing for HIV/AIDS. Per the Aids Foundation of Chicago’s Facebook page part of their new mission is to mobilize communities to create equity and justice for people living with and vulnerable to HIV and related chronic diseases. This is where Maxx comes in to organize communities in way to help them learn to help themselves with this fight on HIV/AIDS.

Joining CWT4R co –host Michelle and Terry Boi will be Tracy Baim, Editor of Windy City Times and partner with the newly formed Pride Action Tank, AIDS Foundation of Chicago. Tracy has been pushing Youth Homeless Awareness for over 5 years and now she is working tirelessly with community leaders and organizations to address this issue that is leading the devastation of youth and especially LGBTQ youth. Tracy will give facts about homeless youth, the plight they face, the programs and resources that are available to them. Lastly how we as a country, community, and individual can attack this issue.
Also joining us will be Angeline White (Kasey) who as a teen came out to her mother and was put out of her home. Kasey’s struggles to make it was documented in 2010 as part of a documentary entitled “The Homestretch” a co- production of Kartemquin Films and Spargel Productions. The documentary examines the struggles of three youth face in obtaining a high school level education, and then follows them beyond graduation to focus on the crucial transition when the structure of school vanishes and homeless youth struggle to find the support and community they need to survive and be independent. But for many the only reason for homelessness is because they identify as a LGBTQ youth.
On Wednesday November 11th we celebrate Veterans Day in the USA. It is a holiday to honor all who have served in the United States Military Services. We would like to thank each and every one of you for your service. Many times we don’t show the appreciation we should for them protecting and defending this country. We just casually mention it. So many times a disaster will happen and we watch, we talk, we listen, we mourn then we move on to the next disaster. August 29, 2005, we watched in horror as levees broke and men, women, children, families, the homeless and animals perished one after another leaving a total of close to 2000 dead. Katrina affected many lives and we can only image the hurt, lost and misplaced feelings of the thousands of people affected that day. The African-American Community was really affected by this disaster and to this day are affected with memories, lost and emotions that only they can feel. However, that community has proven to be a strong one with rebuilding, relocating and putting their lives in order. Do not get it wrong this ghost will follow them and will raise its ugly head from time to time but it will not define who they are and what they will become. The stories told are not for you to feel sorry for them but for you to understand the journey they had to take in order to be where they are today. Ten years later and the journey made individuals stronger and more determined than ever, to survive. Levilyn Chriss on October 28th, an independent producer out of Chicago of The Louisiana Project will join CWT4R. The Louisiana Project is a documentary that has given some New Orleanians an opportunity to look back and share their personal experiences surrounded by Hurricane Katrina. Levilyn and her family were also deeply affected by Katrina. On December 1, 2005, when residents were allowed to go into the Lower Ninth Ward, she went into her father's home and was overwhelmed by the stench and damages. While walking through her dad's neighborhood observing the devastation and hearing the cries of many and talking to some of the residents who had become homeless, jobless, and disconnected from normalcy, she realized they needed a voice.
Now that marriage is the law of the land it's time to get focused on the other challenges facing the LGBTQ community including youth homelessness, economic disparity, discrimination in the workplace, etc.
The African-American LGBTQ Community has been affected disproportionately by these and other social and equities.

She teaches mini-courses at the University of Chicago, is co-host of OUTSpoken! LGBTQ Storytelling, and serves on several boards and advisory councils.

Mrs. Eatmon was born in 1931 in Boligee City in Green County, Alabama. At age 15 she was raped and out of fear for her family she ended up marrying her assailant. For 30 years, Mary endured the dysfunctional marriage enduring years of abuse and remaining silent not only out of fear but also due to the shame and stigma many victims of abuse suffer.
Mrs. Eatmon will share her story in hopes of letting other women, in similar circumstances; know that they are not alone. She will share resources and insights into how to recognize and break the cycle of abuse.
Now 83 years young, Mrs. Eatmon wrote “NINE HOUSES” to reach out to others and let them know how she no longer accepts mistreatments and attacks; how she realized that her being abused was not her fault; and how she mastered the art of forgiveness and moved on. Hers is an inspirational story of strength and triumph.

Each November on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we mourn the loss of our transgender sisters and brothers and pledge to end transphobia but sadly our work is not done. Although Janet Mock, Laverne Cox, and others are opening doors for the transgender community, too many of our brothers and sisters every day must face discrimination, violence and transphobia on the job and in their communities.

Women have at least five stages of health transitions in the life. At each stage different health issues may affect you and without knowing what to ask you may be missing vital information that will help with your future wellness. Have you taken a more comprehensive approach to your health? From the time a girl is born there are the normal wellness checks that both genders should be exposed to. By the teens years adolescence as we know it teen-age girls began to transition, physically and emotionally. Mid-life and women should began a routine to have annual check-ups, mammograms and this is a point where other test become a requirement as you age and you start to really watch what you eat. Finally, when you reach the golden years there are more health issues that could be on the horizon that could affect you, if you are not asking the right questions when speaking to your physician or visiting annually. Women health covers a wide spectrum and hidden issues could cause major problems without proper care, questions and education about your health and the stages you go through.

She will talk about how Africa has stayed true to nature and it’s cultural. Thuli will also grace us with stories and information about a new generation that is thriving in Africa. Thuli stated all eyes are on Africa and there is a new birth in the continent. Thuli is winner of the Sir Lawrence Olivier Award in London and the Obie in New York for her lead role in Poppie Nongena. She’s the winner of three (3) Audelco Awards in New York for writing, directing and performing her one woman show Buya, Africa, she also won the FNB Vita Award when she performed Buya Africa at the Civic theatre in Johannesburg South Africa.Thuli played Rafiki in the Lion King on Broadway, Poppie Nongena in New York, London, Toronto, Australia and Chicago. She performed Bongi in Bongi’s Journey at Crossroads theatre in New Brunswick, Lost in the Stars, Kamadonsela (Lady Macbeth) in Welcome Msomi’s Umabatha in South Africa, London, Israel and New York City. Halala the musical at The Ariel off broadway, Sheila’s Day at Crossroads Theatre in New Brunswick, Grahamstown Festival and The Market Theatre in Johannesburg, Madre, in Juan Darien, directed by Julie Taymor. However in Nigeria the pledge reads I pledge to Nigeria my country. To be faithful, loyal and honest. To serve Nigeria with all my strength, to defend her unity, and uphold her honor and glory. So help me God. However it was published that President Buhari should not listen to President Obama regarding Gay rights and that Nigeria feels that homosexuality is taboo and an abomination. One pledge talks about justice for all and the other talks about defending a countries unity. Let’s talk for REAL. Dj Queen a 43 year old Nigerian decent lesbian. She has resided here in the states since she was very young. Although, she loves her home in Lagos, her personal choice to live as an open lesbian there is illegal and immoral according to laws and cultural practices. She has lived as a lesbian for about 23 years. She has also supported LGBT groups in her country to change the laws and that has yet to be successful. She has relatives that still live there. She currently is working towards putting together several groups to protect those who choose to be LGBT by creating safe houses for youths.
There's a new HIV prevention method - PrEP! PrEP is short for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. PrEP, is a way for people who do not have HIV but who are at substantial risk of getting it to prevent HIV infection by taking a pill every day. The pill (brand name Truvada) contains two medicines that are used in combination with other medicines to treat HIV. When someone is exposed to HIV through sex or injection drug use, these medicines can work to keep the virus from establishing a permanent infection.
PrEP is not a guarantee of prevention and some worry that it may lead to an increase in risky behavior including unprotected sex. There are lots of other diseases that can also be acquired through unprotected sex.

Todd ReSean will join Can WE TALK FOR REAL, co-host Terry Boi and Michelle to discuss his journey to adopt his son Taylen. Todd, a single father would like to motivate more men to adopt and give a child a loving home. He is still in the process but would like to share his hopes and dreams for his son and encourage others to do the same. Todd is slated to return to the stage in the starring role of Roommates, a John Ruffin production. He is currently the vocal arranger and lyricist for the Chicago theater group, Theater47 of which RaSean has worked with productions such as DreamGirl and The Color Purple, He is currently an advocate for LGBT men to become fathers.
Roland Leggett will also talk about the importance of lifting up Black fathers in our community, celebrating the difference they make and the ups (like attending daddy/daughter dances) and the downs (like being ditched by his daughter at the daddy/daughter dance). A nationally recognized community activist and movement leader with many years of social justice advocacy experience, his resume includes bringing progressive leadership to several organizations including the ACLU of Detroit, Equality Michigan and Working America. He and his partner, the Rev. Matthew Bode were married in 2014 and are very visible in metro-Detroit’s LGBTQ community. Roland is a leader on many levels both locally and nationally but his most important role is that of Dad.

Tiera Craig a veteran, entrepreneur, activist and community leader. Serving in the United States Army from 1995 to 2004, Tiera navigated through the Veterans Compensation Appeals process and after helping a few soldiers that were having issues with the process and the feeling that they could not openly talk about their issues of being gay to another VSA she began Rainbow Veterans Project.
The Rainbow Veterans Project aims to provide resource, advocacy, and training to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Veterans. We will ensure that LGBT veterans understand all benefits and entitlements due to them and their families. We will work with VA Medical Centers, Veterans Benefits Administration, Legal Aid organizations, Employment and Training organizations, and all other available resources to serve as the HUB for LGBT veterans and their families. We will also provide social outings and events to maintain and rebuild comradery among Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Airmen in a safe and affirming environment.They model ourselves after successful Veterans' Service Organizations except we will cater to the unique needs of LGBT veterans in a Post-DADT society.
The Rainbow Veteran Project seeks to be recognized and utilized as the premier LGBT Veterans' Service Organization in the country. They want to ensure that we are able to provide all necessary services/resources to any veteran seeking assistance.
Trans Sisters are raising the bar on diversity and inclusion. Activists like Janet Mock and Laverne Cox are more than out and proud. They are using their visibility as a platform to educate, break barriers and open doors. From OPRAH to ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK TO the BOLD & BEAUTIFUL the lives of transgender men and women are being talked about and played out for all to see but what is the real story. Joining CAN WE TALK FOR REAL on June 3, 2015 are two activists living their lives and working for the transgender community as well as equal rights - Bre Campbell and Carmarion D. Anderson. Bre and Carmarion will talk about the challenges trans women still face, the stigma not only trans sisters but the men who love them face and why despite the success and visibility of Trans sisters like Janet Mock and Laverne Cox trans lives are still targeted for violence even murder at alarming rate. As more of our transgender sisters and brothers take their rightful place in leadership, in media, in religion and politics how do we as a community make sure that TRANS LIVES MATTER.
It is shouted from the streets, in bars, in schools, and in homes that LIVES MATTER. In that same loud voice shout so that everyone can hear, TRANS LIVES MATTER ALSO.
May is Lupus Month and joining Can We Talk for REAL, co-host Michelle and Terry this Wednesday Night May 27th will be Keya Brooks Napper a motivational speaker, who established MEEK LEGACY, LLC which educates and empowers others concerning invisible illnesses such as lupus. Keva has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education with a minor in English. She is also the Founder and Executive Director of Beautiful Butterflies, Inc., a nonprofit lupus foundation. She teaches and facilitates groups as well as serves as an ambassador for Lupus Awareness through personal experience and pragmatic application. Being an 11 year Lupus thriver, Keva knows the daily challenges that many with an autoimmune disease face. She has overcome two blood clots on the brain, a stroke, hair loss, seizures and many struggles. She teaches that the best way to overcome such obstacles is simply (thriving) one day at a time.
During her spare time, Keva enjoys traveling, singing and acting. Her life is strengthened by spending time with family. “A day is never wasted as long as a memory is created” and she enjoys creating memories with those she loves. She currently resides in North Carolina.

RWS is dedicated to impacting the lives of women through visual media and print by collecting our stories and preserving our histories So many stories have been lot but so many have been captured and will hold our history forever.Most recently, she was featured on the LGBT Radio Nation Show the topic being Intergenerational Communication. Dr. Watson has also been a guest on the Rhonda Sciortino radio show Crack the Code and the Detroit Area Agency on Aging Senior Solutions Radio Show. Since her retirement, she has ventured into yet another genre, film making. Starting a production company, Reel Women Speak is dedicated to impacting the lives of women through visual media. Women will have the opportunity to become empowered, enhance and develop their quality of life and recalibrate their future, thereby strengthening families and transforming communities. Collective Voices: Wisdom of our Lesbian Elders is her first independent film. Dr. Watson states that “whether it’s in my writing, art or film I have a deep need to recollect traditions and generational legacy, this perhaps comes from listening to stories from my elders specifically, African American women sitting, laughing, talking on porch steps or around the kitchen table.”
Dr. Debraha Watson describes herself as a mother of two adult children, a film maker, poet, short story writer, essayist, editor and retired higher education administrator. “I can be driven or complacent. Insecure or egotistical like all living creatures I am passing through stages. I am recovering, discovering and growing.”

Jonica and Nkenge were our guests in January sharing their story of growing their family via IVF. Now that little Johan has arrived. The new parents are back to talk about life with baby – the birth, each of their experience with maternity/parental leave and work, the joys and challenges and how big brother Patrick is doing with baby Johan.Also joining us will be L and Sharron Dorris proud parents of son Jeremiah Dorris. Their story is unique because L and Sharron work with children shelters. After watching how these children live, L and Sharron decided that they wanted to give a child all the love they knew they could give, so they decided to adopt. Jeremiah came into their lives and his happy and warm personality stole their hearts and the rest is history. Jeremiah was adopted in 2014 and if you see the pictures posted by the proud parents you know Jeremiah is at home.CWT4R will open the lines during the last half-hour of the show so that you can share your special tribute/remembrance of your mother. Let’s tell the women we call momma/mother whether blood or not how much we love them and what they mean or meant to our lives. Remember some mommas were aunts, grandmothers, and sisters. In the United States April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The goal is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities on how to prevent it. Sexual violence is a major public health, human rights and social justice.Joining CAN WE TALK FOR REAL cohosts, Terry Boi, Ina Anthony and Michelle Brown to discuss Sexual Assault Awareness and the activities including TAKE BACK THE NIGHT (TBTN) events are Kalimah Johnson and John Trimble. Kalimah Johnson is founder and Executive Director of the SASHA Center, Inc. SASHA CENTER is a sexual assault service, prevention and educational agency which is designed to provide educational/support groups to survivors of sexual assault. John Trimble is a poet, visionary, friend, brother, author, creative spirit and activist. He has brought a male perspective to TBTN activities reminding us that men not only should be protectors but can also be victims of sexual assault as well.

One of the big controversies from season one ‘Empire’ has been the off-camera debate of the use of the “N” word on the show. Empire star Terrence Howard has said its time to get real about the “N” word on TV and drop the stigma surrounding the word making the hip- hop drama more authentic. Costar Taraji P. Henson has said she is against it.“Ngga” - We’ve all heard and sometimes even have used the words but when is it ok and when it is not? Why do some elders cringe while some youth have embraced these words without feeling any stigma? Is it ok for Black folk to use the N word but not Whites? Would “Empire” be any more authentic if Lee Daniels used the “N” word? And what about those other words like Btch, Fag, etc.? Tim'm T. West is a poet, scholar, rapper, and youth activist who was born in Cincinnati and raised primarily in rural Arkansas. Tim’m brings hip hop to the table and will probably be able to talk about how the younger generation perceives all the words that are considered Taboo by many. M Shelly Conner, PhD is the Executive Director of Quare Square Collective, Inc., she teaches Writing and Literature at Loyola University Chicago. Shelly brings more of the history and understanding of the exploration of the words so freely used by us all.

Hustle & Flo is the brain child of Michelle R (Hustle) and Keisha A. (Flo). They have been friends for 27 years and life partners for 7 years. Each owns and operates their own business -Hustle a commercial cleaning service and Flo a home daycare. Together in 2013 they created Hustle & Flo Productions hosting social events for lesbians 25 years of age and over. Each event HUSTLE & FLO hosts has its own unique theme, raffles, food and highlights health topics for women each month. The monthly dances are strictly for women but Hustle and Flo have found ways to support the entire LGBTQ community by hosting free events to collect donations for other organizations, participating in back-to-school events and more. Hustle and Flo believes in the SHE Concept –Support other LGBTQ businesses and organizations by attending events; Highlight lesbian owned businesses at each monthly events and Educate women on health topics at each month. These monthly events also offer attendees a space to display and showcase novels, artwork or lesbian owned /operated (LOO's) business material. The events are held the 4th Saturday of each month in Canton, MI and attract omen from as far away as Florida. Making it work in love, life and business – HUSTLE & FLO will be sharing it all and maybe even share a few new dance steps.

Nikki has been writing for over two decades and her writings extend from love, revolutionary, to violence to empowerment to loving one’s self to love of a child. She can be steamy, well reserved, in your face, behind closed door, telling you about yourself before you know it is about you. Nikki Patin has appeared on HBO's Def Poetry Jam, WGN, WCIU, WBEZ and New Zealand's TV3 and Radio New Zealand. She was voted one of 30 under 30 most influential LGBTQ people in Chicago by Windy City Times and took the gold medal in the 2006 Gay Games International LGBT poetry slam. She is the creator of Surviving the Mic(www.survivingthemic.org), an organization dedicated to creating safe and affirming artistic spaces for survivors of trauma. Nikki Patin is an MFA candidate in Creative Non-Fiction at Stonecoast MFA Program at the University of Southern Maine and a weekly cultural commentator on “Music Vox” on www.vocalo.org. Continuing on our series on strong women leaders, on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 co-hosts Ina Anthony, Terry Boi Adams and Michelle Brown welcome Dr. Wilhelmina Perry, the founder of the LGBT Faith Leaders of African Descent.
Dr. Wilhelmina Perry holds a masters in social work and a doctorate in human behavior and educational leadership. She has been a social work faculty, administrator of not- for- profit institutions and community educator.
In 2002, she became a member of The Riverside Church and shortly thereafter would become the convener of Marantha, the LGBT ministry. Dr. Perry was a co-founder and Vice President of the Interfaith Task Force for Homeless LGBT Youth. Under the work of the Task Force, three shelters were opened in local churches.
Dr. Perry has been an advocate for LGBT same-gender loving people as well as for marriage equality. She held the position of convener of the Roundtable People of Color under Empire State Pride Agenda. In 2010, this group reformed itself as an independent organization and would become the LGBT Faith Leaders of African Descent. Dr. Perry currently serves as Administrative Coordinator
Dr. Perry was honored in 2013 with an award from Harlem Pride. She has received recognitions from Empire State Pride Agenda and GLAAD. She became a Purpose Prize Fellow in 2014. In 2014, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from LGBT Kwanzaa Community of NYC, Inc.
She has contributed many articles on LGBT youth, same-gender families, “coming out”, clergy and attitudes towards LGBT people and President Obama’s support of marriage equality. These articles have appeared in Caribbean Life, The Daily News, The Amsterdam News, Huffington Post and The Positive Community.

Can We Talk for REAL, co-host Ina, Michelle and Terry welcomes Aileen Hetherington recently diagnosis with Type 2 Diabetes a medical worker and now her life has changed and she would like to hold the conversation that is being hidden in so many people’s closet that needs to come out in the open. There are two types of Diabetes and you could have one and are ignoring the systems. Well let’s talk about something that effects millions and changes lives with one diagnosis. Aileen will discuss the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 as she tells her story and why this disease is one that needs changed her life with a change in eating habits and a routine exercise plan. Many people with Diabetes feel they are alone and there is no one to support them to help get them through this. Aileen started the A1Club which offers support to those diagnosed with Diabetes as well as her upcoming documentary will answer a lot of questions and provide a lot of guidance.

February is supposed to be the month of love and romance. The year is 2015 and in January and February the lives of Trans Woman have not matter because 6 have already been killed. There is no national or local uproar for justice for the families, friends or the victims. There are no marches scheduled through social media with expecting crowds of 1000 or more expressing outrage. There are however organizations that are raising theirs voices and hoping you join them as this is a trend that MUST STOP NOW. Joining co-host Ina, Michelle and Terry Wednesday night, February 25th will be Monica Roberts, aka the TransGriot, is a native Houstonian and a trailblazing award winning trans community leader. She has lobbied since 1998 for trans human rights protections at the federal, state and local levels in Kentucky and Texas. January 2006 she founded the award winning blog TransGriot. We will talk about why the deaths of 6 transgender women have had little mainstream media attention, no community leadership out cry, nothing. New Orleans LGBT youth of color activist group, The BreakOUT stated in the Feb 10th news story, "The silence and lack of action from media on behalf of the Black transgender community sends a strong message that Black Trans Lives, in fact, do not matter." At last count 5 black transgender women and 1 Latina transgender woman have lost their lives. Where are the black and latina leaders that scream when a black or latina man or woman are killed for no reason? When does a human life not matter and who determines that?

CWT4R will discuss with Dr. Rhue the movie SELMA and how the character Bayard Rustin who was one of Dr. Kings’ advisors was portrayed. We will ask Dr Rhue to explain how important Bayard Rustin was to the civil rights movement and how he should really go down in history. Dr Rhue will be talking about other LGBT African Americans leaders who paved the way for us as Black Americans and were hidden during the movement but were instrumental in its success as Bayard Rustin. Join us as Dr Rhue discusses the many faces in history and the many faces of those who were GAY.
Dr. Sylvia Rhue is a writer, activist, filmmaker, and producer. She is a native of southern California. Sylvia went on to receive a Doctorate in Human Sexuality from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco, CA. She was the first African American to receive this degree. As a part of her dissertation, she was able to create a documentary on black lesbians, which re-kindled her childhood interest in making movies. This passion culminated in her co-producing with Dr. Dee Mosbacher and Frances Reid, the acclaimed documentary “All God’s Children,” a film that dealt with African American values, gays and lesbians in the civil rights movements, and African American responses to homophobia.
This year, February 7, 2015 marks the 15th year for National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD). This is a national HIV testing and treatment community mobilization initiative targeted at Blacks in the United States and the Diaspora. The Black Aids Institute is the only organization that focuses their attention solely on black people with HIV/AIDS. This year there are some shocking findings and scientific evidence that speak about treatment and opportunities in the black community when it comes to the HIV/AIDs epidemic.National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a call for Black American to recognize that HIV is indeed a Black phenomenon & the reality that HIV disproportionately affects Black people and especially Black men who have sex with men (MSM) and Black women. Hank Millbourne will discuss information about the number of Black MSM diagnosed with HIV and the myth of black men and how they engage in sex. Hank will also talk about how the community should educate themselves, become more involved, and know what their status is and if you are infected to get treated.
The documentary “For Faith, For Love, Forever” explores the debate on same-sex marriage in the African-AmeTrican community and its inclusion of the black church. Despite media portrayals suggesting complete disapproval, ordained African-American pastors and ministers are given the opportunity at a Town Hall Meeting in Oakland, CA to speak openly about their reasons for being for the inclusions of same sex couples, their rights to marry and being active members of their individual congregations. The film offers its viewers a powerful exploration of the effect that California's Proposition 8 had pre-and post-Election 2008 on the gay community. The discussion of black gays having a right to marry as a matter of inclusion in the church makes for a most diverse and unique topic. The film’s director Nefertiti Strong, Rev. This year marks the 27th year that the National LGBTQ Task Force will present Creating Change, the premier annual organizing and skills-building event for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and their allies. The event will be held in Denver Colorado, February 4-8, 2015. When we talk about being a family in the LGBTQ Community we start a whole different type of conversation. Family in our community could mean two mothers and two fathers but the questions that are being asked more then not is: How Are We Having Babies? Who is Having Our Baby? How do your answer our child when they ask “Where did I come from” if you are in a same sex relationship/marriage couple? Can We Talk for REAL will be joined by expecting parents Jonica Burkhead and wife Nkenge Jazz Burkhead. They talk about their journey to parenthood was understood from the time we started dating. We discussed our desire to have children early on. After a year of marriage we decided it was time to start trying. Our first challenge was finding a clinic we trusted and were comfortable with, that was gay friendly. We prepared ourselves for homophobia or outright rejection; however we found a great clinic and doctor. Another challenge was having a million questions and neither of us personally knowing another gay couple who had been through it. Once we were in the process, we had to have many discussions about choosing a donor, like race, as many black men don't give specimens so we were limited. We then had to figure out what we valued in other areas like education, hobbies etc. the hardest part was the waiting, waiting to ovulate, waiting to test, and then waiting for baby. zLet's talk about how lesbians have babies, how gay men have babies, how the transgender couples have babies. If you would like to be an active participant in this conversation of “How Are We Having Babies” just inbox us so that can include your family in our family conversation. If you adopted your child, took legal responsibility of a family members child, used a turkey baster, a friends sperm or the sperm bank or if you had sex the old fashion way with the opposite sex let us hear from you.
It’s a new year and like so many of you Terry, Ina and Michelle have made resolutions. So we will tell you ours if you tell us yours. Let’s talk about why do people make New Year resolutions? Okay so did you say that you want to lose weight? Are you on your way to the gym twice a week? Will get your finance in order? How many of you will get married, or engaged? Make that change I your life but unsure how? How many in the LGBT community have or will schedule those doctor appointments this year and keep them?
Here are some numbers that may surprise you about how long it will take you to forget the New Year’s Resolution: About 75% of people maintain their resolution through the first week. Congratulations to those who made that goal. If you have pasted the two week mark and still working your plan then you are in the 71% to achieve. Now if you get past the six month mark you are in the elite 46% that made that promise Jan 1st and you stood strong. So will you make it? We would love to know what the numbers are for those who make it to the end of the year.

Coming back to CWT4R are HIV/AIDS Activist Felix and Paula Sirls. HIV/Aids is still living strong in our community taking our parents, children, friends and our intimacy. For so many years there have been warriors in our community that have been educating, testing the young and old, giving people back their dignity and pride through counseling and motivation. Join us as we talk about the last 30 plus years and how the many success stories have kept our guest motivated and activist in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Also what they are doing now in this fight and what you can do to join and why you need to join this movement of educating about HIV/AIDS. They will also discuss the current movement and what has changed and what is going on in Michigan as it relates to HIV/AIDS .

This is a team that they both work hard to educate, counsel and pray together with those suffering with HIV/AID and their families. Working at the Institute for Public Health, Felix for over 30 years has help members of the community diagnosed with HIV/AIDS educate them self on the illness. He now is an HIV/AIDS Counselor and tester. While Paula his wife and mother of his children work as a Program Manager for Gospel Against AIDS (GAA) Sometimes helping the body and the mind is just not enough there has to be deeper healing and Paula will talk to us more about that.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. TDOR was started by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence that year and began an important memorial that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. This year over 200 names will be read at TDOR services across the country. Joining CAN WE TALK FRO REAL co-hosts Ina, Michelle and Terry Boi will be Transgender activists Monica Roberts (The Trans Grio) and Michelle Fox-Phillips (Gender Identity Network Alliance).They will talk about commemorative ceremonies and the continued fight for a fully inclusive ENDA (Employment Non Discrimination Act) nationally and the fight at the state level in Michigan for its transgender community.

As a survivor herself the founder, Imani Evans of Women Healing Women wanted to start an organization that truly empowers women. She works to empower women to understand that even surviving is only part of the healing journey, and that thriving is the true destination. We will talk to Imani about her survival and how it shaped her into becoming the woman she is today. Joining CWT4R will also be Gwen Thomas; currently the Executive Director at the S.H.E. Experience and a minister at Victory for the World Church, Atlanta, GA. Gwen is a board member and the Communication Expert of Women Healing Women, Inc. Thomas is also a survivor of sexual abuse. She feels that education, wiliness and determination are some key elements to being a survivor. CWT4R again this week will revisit a series that is geared toward the masculine identified lesbian with returning guest Kofi Adoma and the Jerry Palmer Group of Detroit. The conversation will again explore Identity and labels with a twist of social justice movement within the MIL community.The mission of the Jerry Palmer Group is to combine the talents of self-identified masculine lesbians into a cohesive effort to give validation, support and resources to MILs of all ages in the Detroit metropolitan area, as well as across the country where such support is needed. This grassroots self-reliant group specializes in educating the public about the social and cultural experiences of African American MILs and others of color because this is a population often neglected, stigmatized, and rarely highlighted in national discussions about the LGBT community. Since this is a self-help peer support organization, MILs serve as leaders in proactively managing the programs of this collective group. The JPG strives to collaborate and partner with similar groups such as Brooklyn Boihood, Brown Boi Project, Unity Fellowship Church Movement MIL Ministry, and Butch Voices to encourage participation in the intersected social justice movements where women of color are marginalized and disempowered.The show will feature three of the leadership cadre members, Elder Atiba Cohen-the elder of the group, Dr. Kofi Adoma (pronounced doe-MAH)- founding member, and Kunto Mawusi-the youngest in the group. Their aim is to share with you the purpose of the Jerry Palmer Group and how it was founded, the specific goals and target areas, who all is involved, and the importance of having a group like this exist in Detroit and elsewhere. The focus of the conversation will be on empowerment and visibility of MILs of color and ways to rally up their talents and skills to be of service to their communities, to each other, and to themselves.
In August, 2014 The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry’s African-American Roundtable and Many Voices hosted the Souls a’ Fire Conference focusing on the next generation of Black Queer Theology. The conference encourages young scholars in their current work and seasoned theologians and preachers as they explore the intersections of African-American culture, the church and LGBTQ identity. As a follow up to CAN WE TALK FOR REAL’s “Black LGBT Believers” series which aired in May, CWT4R cohosts Teresa Adams, Ina Anthony and Michelle E. Brown will once again be joined by Rev. Roland Stringfellow (Detroit) and Rev. Anthony W. Sullivan Jr. (Chicago) as well as Rev. Sullivan, Jr. is a justice advocate committed to the liberation of persons and groups who suffer from all forms of oppression. He is a graduate of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University having earned the Master of Divinity degree., Reverend Darlene C. A. Franklin is originally from East Orange, New Jersey. She is a veteran of the United States Air Force. Rev. Franklin has been in formal ministry since 1993. iRev. Franklin holds an Associate’s Degree from Oakland Community College, Royal Oak and is currently pursuing full time a Bachelor of Social Work at Wayne State University.
For close to twenty years Donna worked for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), most recently as the Associate Director of Field Outreach/Diversity. She has advocated for LGBT legislative priorities, such as Marriage Equality and the Employment Non Discrimination Act by building relationships in people of color communities. Her work has successfully created visibility for LGBT people of color nationally. We are the link in understanding and changing the world dynamics around the conversation. Be proud of you and own all parts of you, and the world will have to adapt because you are significant. Approximately 40% of homeless youth are LGBTQ. Nearly all homeless youth service providers in the U.S. now serve our youth but very few are exclusively by, for and about LGBTQ Youth.

Being homeless brings its own level of stigma to LGBTQ youth and the definition for homelessness defies traditional boundaries. Many youth say “I have a home. I just don’t want to go there”. Opting for alternative housing (couch surfing, etc.) and/or the streets over unstable households. Sex trafficking transactional sex, even suicide are day –to-day realities. What can we do?
Peterson will be talking about the “Family Acceptance Project” which focuses on the harmful effects of family rejection and the importance of engaging family members who are outed by their children and other options for our youth than the dangers/victimization on the streets.

Immigration might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of issues affecting the LGBTQ community but it has a deep impact on the lives of many LGBTQ families especially immigrants in our community who face unique and often daunting challenges.
Immigration equality demands fair and equal execution of the laws and rights of non-citizens regardless of nationality or where they come from. LGBTQ individuals are being detained when no crime has been committed with reports of transgender persons being isolated weeks on end while awaiting a court appearance or deportation. In over 77 countries around the world being gay is illegal. For many who are undocumented and those seeking asylum, being deported is the equivalent to a death sentence. The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) has been advancing the civil and human rights of LGBTQ people and their families through litigation, legislation, policy, and public education since 1977.
America is a country built on the immigrant experience of many cultures, nationalities and ethnicities but for LGBTQ people seeking freedom and opportunities the pathways are hindered by roadblocks of inequality, transphobia, homophobia and often racism. There is an epidemic in the community and it is just not in the gay community but in the African American community. The sad TRUTH is that you have it and you don't even know it. When was the last time you were tested? A more important question is: Are you practicing SAFE sex daily? How well do you know the person you are kissing and loving? Do you know their status? Do you know YOURS? Herpes is a disease that has affected one out of six people in the United States between the ages of 14-49. The CDC has estimated that at least 25% of Americans are infected with Herpes (HSV-2). At least 90% of the population has herpes -1, which are cold sores. It does not matter if you have never been with a man your partner may have and unbeknownst to her or him and you, you both may have now been exposed and or be a carrier. Herpes is an Infection that is more easily transmitted from men to women than from women to men. In the United States, an estimated 81.1% of 14–49 year olds infected with HSV-2 have never received a clinical diagnosis. When it comes to the LGBT community where the actual statistical breakdown of STD? Where is the written information that is geared toward lesbians when it comes to safe sex?

LeMagie will talk about how in the Bronx they are teaching young people about their rights when they are profiled, Stopped and Frisked by members of law enforcement. LeMaige is involved in the New York STOP and FRISK Project that guide youth by educating them on when they are stopped by the police to not make a bad situation worst then it has to become by knowing their rights. We will then focus on the center of attention by the media regarding violence, Chicago. Celebrated public speaker, personal life coach, poet, television personality, Publisher and Editor-In-Chief of a national magazine, noted gay rights activist, and essayist, Mr. Bridgeforth has come a long way in a very short time since his October 15, 1987 birth, in Voorhees, New Jersey. His professional speaking career began at the age of 16, when he caught the attention of Les Brown and was invited to tour nationally with the world-renown communicator. Then at 22, Maya Angelou affirmed his status as a poet when, at her North Carolina home, he presented her with a piece specifically written by him to celebrate her 81st birthday. Since then, he’s been a much sought after poet, performing his work throughout the country. When in college David opened up publicly about his sexuality and began doing grass roots work in Indianapolis’ LGBT community, assuming the position of Entertainment and Events Chairman for the state's annual Black Pride celebration and conducting safe sex and HIV/AIDS awareness promotional campaigns for Brothers United Indianapolis. Now David Bridgeforth is the highly acclaimed and nationally distributed DBQ Magazine, for which he serves as Publisher and Editor-In-Chief won the coveted Media Award from the Indiana Minority Aids Coalition (IMAC). Mr. Bridgeforth is also the youngest individual ever inducted into the International Federation of Black Pride's "Black LGBT Hall of Fame”.

Mona Noriega, appointed by Mayor Emanuel in 2011, serves as the Chairman and Commissioner of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations (CCHR). The CCHR works to address prejudice and discrimination, supports victims of hate crimes, and enforces the City of Chicago’s anti-discrimination laws. Currently she is a member of the LGBTQ Coalition for Immigrant Rights and annually serves as an Honorary Co-Chair of Chicago Build the Peace Committee and is working on a Hate Crimes Summit to be held at UIC on October 20, 2014. Mona’s initial community organizing work began with lesbian mothers, creating safe space and opportunities to celebrate family. From there she began to produce chapbooks for friends who were poets and Lesbians of Color (LOC) cultural productions at Mountain Moving Coffee House, and then as a member of Latina Lesbianas en Nuestro Ambiente (LLENA) helped organized performance art and the International Women’s Day Dances in the 1990s.

Abrams.A past pastor of Zion Progress Baptist Church in Detroit, she made the decision to step down rather than divide the church after disclosing she had married her wife in Iowa where same sex marriage is legal. Before her marriage and before the Defense of Marriage Act was overturned by the Supreme Court , allowing same-sex marriages to be recognized by the federal government, Abrams wrote a blog post for People for the American Way, arguing that it was time to "dump DOMA" and allow every person the opportunity to marry. Her wife is bishop emeritus of the Imani Temple of the African-American Catholic Congregation in Washington, D.C. is her best friend and a support system. Abrams, who has a masters in divinity and a doctorate in ministry from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, will share how she reached the understanding that same-sex marriage is aligned with Christian teachings.

A conference for women, who love woman, directed by women and welcomed open armed by women. That is what Create Love Conference was all about. Join CWT4R host Ina, Michele and Terry as we are joined by women who attended and can reflect on what they were expecting to get from the conference and what they actually took away from it. Joining us will be Marcie Younger who traveled from the Midwest to Atlanta to join over 100 other women in a conference aimed at strengthening relationships between couples. The conference also talked about individuals that need to love themselves also.
Tonight show will be about uplifting and talking about relationships and how important it is to have a strong relationship with yourself and others. Imani Evans and SharRon provided tools and support for a room of women that were engaging in conversations and exercises to help growth to occur. Terry attended the conference and also will reflect on what she saw, what she heard and how this conference may need to go on the road to our many communities.

Joining CWT4R, co-host Ina, Michelle and Terry Boi will be Empowerment Coach, Speaker, Author and Co-Founder of Create Love, Imani Evans. From the Create Love Conference Press Kit it quoted “It takes a village to support a successful relationship and we want Create Love to be that village. This is more than a vision: it is a movement to redefine the way we build healthy, loving relationships.” The Create Love Conference is being held in Decatur, Ga., March 8th.
This is the end of Black History Month and in recognition, CWT4R would like to end the month with uplifting the most powerful emotion there is and that is Love. We will more specifically, talk about the love between two women or even just yourself. Create Love is not or just couples it is for singles who want to celebrate love within oneself. The conference is for any woman that wants to be empowered in this love movement. The conference was also co-founded by SharRon Jamison who is a Life Coach, Minister and Author; she brings compassion and commitment to emotional wellness to the conference as well as her ability to empower others.
Just a sneak peek of what you may hear about at the conference is how 7 topics can influence and affect relationship happiness, relationship satisfaction and relationship longevity. Joining Terry Boi, Ina and Michelle will be Dr. Sylvia Rhue a writer, activist, filmmaker, and producer. Dr. Rhue co-produced the acclaimed documentary “All God’s Children,” a film that dealt with African American values, gays and lesbians in the civil rights movements, and African American responses to homophobia. Tomorrow on CWT4R we will be talking about LGBT African Americans leaders who paved the way for us as Black Americans but have you ever wonder who out of the people in history was GAY? Join us as Dr Rhue discusses the many faces in history and the many faces of those who were GAY.Dr. Sylvia Rhue is a writer, activist, filmmaker, and producer. She is a native of southern California. Sylvia went on to receive a Doctorate in Human Sexuality from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco, CA. She was the first African American to receive this degree. As a part of her dissertation, she was able to create a documentary on black lesbians, which re-kindled her childhood interest in making movies. This passion culminated in her co-producing with Dr. Dee Mosbacher and Frances Reid, the acclaimed documentary “All God’s Children,” a film that dealt with African American values, gays and lesbians in the civil rights movements, and African American responses to homophobia.

Leaders are not born they are made by hard effort” a quote by Vince Lombardi. Join CWT4 when two up incoming leaders Brent Hamlet and Cherno Biko talk about the issues and that they are passionate about. These young people have joined the movement to bring about change and awareness in the LGBT Community. They will talk about the growing movement among young people who will take the reins and keep it alive. Brent Hamlet prides himself on being a dedicated agent of change. His particular interests range from but are not limited to LGBT issues, Women issues and Voter issues. Brent wants to makes sure the voices of the young people are heard through registering people to vote. Also joining CWT4R is Cherno Biko Actor, activist and (now) writer is a first-generation Columbus native and a graduate of Ft. Hayes’s Black Box Theatre Company. She comes from a long ancestral line of human rights advocates, most notably, Uncle Steven Biko, who founded The Black Consciousness Movement. As such, this legacy of activism seems inherent to Cherno’s DNA.Cherno has spent time helping to make campuses safer places than in class, by facilitating LGBT panels, Gender and Sexuality 101 Workshops and Safe Zone Trainings. She has and currently is working on issues that are affecting the Transgender community. Cherno serves as a member of Trans People of Color Coalition, The National Black Justice Coalition, and The National Center for Transgender Equality, Cherno also is a life-long member of the NAACP. Believing and living the vision of TransOhio, Biko is dedicated to making the world a safer place for all people to live authentically.
Now that Creating Change is over organizations and individuals take away information, ideas, tools and developing relationships with others working toward change internally and externally for the LGBTQ community. CWT4R was able to capture photos and videos of planning, discussing and the start of implementing change in 2104. There is one thing that could be heard n Plenaries’, workshops and even in the hallways everyone could agree upon which was the community has a lot of work to do. AT this conference there were so many up incoming young leaders that expressed they are looking for tools, partnerships, and continue support from the community as they began working on an agenda that affects their generation.Join us tonight as we give you a recap of the conference from our lens. Talk about what we were expecting and what we experienced. We will talk about organizations that are in the fore front of the movement for change. We also will talk about who had a strong representation at the conference and how they seem to have a clear understanding of there part in this movement and how they are preparing themselves with conversations, networking and training to find where they fit now and in the future for CHANGE.

Monica is a writer, blogger, history buff, and lecturer on transgender issues. Monica’s an advocate with a special emphasis on not only getting African-American transpeople and other voices of color more involved in empowering themselves, educating the GLBT community about our issues, but also shedding light about the struggles of GLBT people in Africa, Jamaica and across the Diaspora. Monica transitioned in 1994 and works diligently at educating and encouraging acceptance of transgender people in the larger African-American community as well. Monica is a vital part of planning this year’s Creating Change. There are many surprises that await the conference goers. If you listed to last weeks’ show she gave you a little pre-view of what will be going on at the conference. The National Gay and Lesbian task Force has organized and networked to bring Creating Change to Houston, Texas. The conference will be held for 5 days with approximately over 350 workshops, various training sessions, plenary sessions and other opportunities to network, (please see the Creating Change website conference information). Based on the Creating Change website it is expected to be over 3500 to be in attendance.
The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force will join Can We Talk for REAL co- host Ina, Michelle and Terry Boi, Wednesday night, January 15th to talk about the 26th National Conference on LGBT Equality Creating Change, which will be held in Houston, Texas. Joining us will be Sue Hyde, the Director of Creating Change and Kylar Broadus the Senior Public Policy Counsel of the Trans Civil Rights Project. Sue the Director of the Creating Change Conference will be talking about the journey to the Conference and its history. Sue over the years has become a recognized organizer and advocate for the LGBT Community. While at the Task Force she her portfolio includes issues such as the rescission of the military ban on openly gay soldiers, passage of civil rights on all levels. Sue’s background knowledge of Creating Change will help many understand the necessity for this conference. Sue serves as the field organizer for the New England Tack Force.Kylar is the Senior Public Policy Counsel of the Trans Civil Rights Project. He will explain how his job compliments the work of Sue in organizing and implementing the Creating Change conference. He will also explain he position with the Task Force. The world is trying to create change in the politics of today. The National Gay and Lesbian task Force with organizing and networking is Creating Change in an entire Community world- wide.

Busses are scheduled to leave from all parts of Chicago taking LGBTQ persons and their allies to Springfield. In Springfield there is a real Pep Rally scheduled with many performers and activist taking part. This show of support has been long coming. Will Illinois be the 14 state to make it legal for same sex couples to marry and enjoy the same rights as a man and woman who marry? Kim L. Hunt, Affinity Community Services’ (Affinity’s) first executive director it is responsible for the outcomes of Affinity’s initiatives in health and wellness, civic engagement, leadership development, and immigration reform. On March 7th 2013, President Obama signed into law the re-authorized Violence against Women Act that provides for more services for victims of Domestic Violence. This law will give agencies the ability to apply for grants and obtain money to help educate about the prevention of sexual abuse and have the ability to care for Domestic Violence victims. Rape victims also had a victory because now the testing for DAN should be shorter providing for a quicker resolution to finding rapist that are in the system quicker, helping to get them off the street. The reauthorized VWA also includes greater support for LGBTQ victims, immigrants and Native American women who have been traditionally undeserved.

Femme is a term used by many feminine-identified queer people from diverse and equally valuable backgrounds including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other queer folks. Femmes are fierce and use their voices to make themselves visible. Nevertheless, as femme women, they are often invisible to other queer people. They are often seen as heteronormative, apolitical, less radical and less queer in a community where being visible depends on being masculine or androgynous. This femmephobia in queer communities – this devaluation and stigmatization of queer femininity – is a form of misogyny that is rooted in dominant patriarchal culture Keisha Watkins and Nkenge Jazz Burkhead are the co-founders of SMEARED LIPSTICK. Roni an incarcerated woman and former addict began Sistas Healing Old Wounds, Inc in order to give back to woman the opportunity to change their future by learning from their past. In 2005 when Roni was released from a New York State correctional facility she knew that she was to somehow return to the prison system to bare -witness to life beyond the walls. While incarcerated Roni began a small group called Sistas Healing Old Wounds, Inc. (SHOW) in Albion Correctional Facility. This program was designed to create a safe space where women could come to talk about past traumas in their lives. What is a good man? What is a good woman? Have we created an image that doesn't exist and that is why many of us are single? Are we being truthful and realistic with our approach? Do we have, what we are asking for? Our opinion of what is good will change with maturity. A woman may define a good man as one who provides, protects, encourage. Most women will say he has to earn a certain amount of money, reside in a certain area and drive a certain car. But what if he has all of those qualities and he is disrespectful, dishonest and he cheats. She was yet another transgender woman killed then victimized again in the media, this time the Cleveland Plain Dealer, with its offensive, insensitive, trans-phobic coverage of her death. CeCe wasn’t the first and probably won’t be the last victim of trans and homophobia. Our transgender community continues to represent a higher proportion of hate violence, intimidation and discrimination. Trans women are disrespectfully, misidentified in the media following violent attacks and trans men are often invisible in conversations about hate violence. The attacks on our transgender community aren’t always by unidentified strangers in dark alleys and back streets. Are people moving in together because they have intentions of marriage or is it for financial reasons? Should there be a year limit in regards to how long you live together before marriage? I have done all that I can to love you but your children are getting on my damn nerves. I know many are saying if you love me, you have to love my children we are a package. That's very true. However, it is difficult to establish a long healthy relationship if there is a missing link.....connection with the kids. How many of us have children or dated someone with children? Sometimes we are involved in relationships for a period of time and become comfortable, complacent, and take each other for granted. We gain weight, sex decrease, and all you hear is a nagging voice saying did you take out the trash? What time will dinner be ready? Did you repair the sink? Would you take my car to be serviced? Why do I always have to ask you to do the same things over and over again? Then suddenly, your significant other asks…..Can we collectively agree to give each other a one week break from it all? This break means I can do what the hell I want. We can have sex with whomever, stay out as late as we want, no picking up children from daycare, spend as much money as we desire, and do not have to answer to anyone for our actions. Will this hinder or help the relationship?
