Well, I had not originally planned on adding more episodes to The Amalgamation Podcast until it was fully ready to go. Sometimes, the world requires us to respond outside of our plans. So here's a little preview of what I will be doing in the Fall, to offer some ideas about those of you who are preaching on any given Sunday.

With the shooting and presumed assassination attempt of former President Trump, I think it would be irresponsible NOT to address this happening in worship tomorrow. I hope you have the courage and willingness to do so.

Here are some thoughts as you enter this space.

TRANSCRIPT

Have we paid attention to everything in the same manner? Certainly not, but that doesn't mean that one, necessarily, should deserve more or less humanity than the other. And the thing I would really focus on, though, tomorrow, is that violent rhetoric, when it escalates, what do we expect to happen? When we use this in, and this is across the board now, I will say, I think conservative folks tend to use it more and there's been violence on, on their side that is much more, I, I would think directed towards those who sit in a more progressive space. Huge generalizations. But at the same time, I've seen everybody kind of ramp up. And when, when do we ramp up? Some people would say, well, if you take the high road, if you decide to play by the rules or you decide to be, to dignify people, then they're not going to reciprocate that. Well, my compassion and love isn't given in a transactional manner. And so somebody seen that foolish, but I think that if I were to come back at somebody with the same level and tone and tactics that were emotionally, spiritually, politically violent, then this is what's going to happen. We've already seen it with Palestinians being attacked on the streets and in their homes, and killed because of who they are. We've seen, you know, economic violence. on, people who just simply wear a Palestinian flag. We certainly have seen, folks who have been antisemitic, they have been, anti-Islamic. There's all, all the things that happen. And at some point, we have to see humanity in one another enough that we don't, we don't exacerbate that, that we don't accelerate and, that we don't escalate violence in our words and actions.

Now that is not weak. That is not a weak position. That is a position I think of strength and of revolution because it goes against the way the world wants us to be. The world thrives on the economy of militarism and violence. And so the more we feed into that, the more that that part of humanity wins.

And I simply. We'll not let that happen. So as you step into the pulpit tomorrow, I don't think you have to feel like you need to calm people that you need to, make people feel good or bad about any particular thing. But I do think it's important for us to use that space in a way that helps people see the larger scheme of humanity.

And what about our current political situation benefits destruction and violence and evil, and how are we going to or not going to participate in that? Again, there is enough love and compassion to go around, and so we don't have to help evil and destruction win I pray for you all tomorrow that are stepping into that pulpit, let the spirit move, love your people, be transformed by your own words, and peace.

A few weeks ago, we were connected with the Gaza Solidarity Network to get matched with someone in Gaza who is trying to raise funds to evacuate. This is obviously not the ideal solution (ceasefire and rebuilding are), and it is unfair that some families will get paired while others will not. Occupation and genocide are also not fair, so we do what we can.

From @GazaSolidarityNetwork

Our philosophy: We approach evacuation efforts from a mutual aid model of "solidarity not charity." Therefore, instead of painting certain Gazan families as perfect victims or exceptionally "worthy of saving," we seek to help as many Gazans as possible from a place of respect and joint-struggle. At the same time, we must balance the inherent contradictions that come with crowdsourcing within the attention economy of social media, which requires that Palestinians share intimate details of their lives and trauma to gain visibility via social media algorithms. This project seeks to connect as many individuals as possible with vetted campaigns so that we can all leverage our personal networks to support individual families while partaking in collective coordination with one another.Join us in the movement toward repairing humanity. Thank you for reading.

As of this posting, they have helped raise over $100,000, so if you want to be matched with a family, here is the form to fill out. Please keep in mind that this is completely run by volunteers (and I suspect young folks), so there is a huge backlog. They vet the GoFundMe so you can be assured that you support an actual family. Sigh Sucks that so many take advantage of these situations. We were matched with a family of nine, the Watfa, and are getting to know them via text/talk. We just posted our first video and would appreciate you sharing, giving, and following as you can!

Greetings from the RCP Family!

Like many of you, over the last six months, our family has wanted to do more to impact the lives of those experiencing genocide in Gaza. Thanks to the work of the Gaza Solidarity Network, we are now engaged in mutual aid campaign to help a family raise money to evacuate.

We have been matched with a family currently living in one of the camps in Gaza: Samah and her husband Ahmed and her father and mother and siblings: Muhammad, Youssef, Abdul Rahman, Hanaa, and Hadeel. We have contributed to the effort and will now help them raise the rest. While making refugees raise $5000 per person is not an ideal solution to what is happening in Gaza, this is what it takes to cross into Egypt and to safety. Our family is getting to know them via talk and text and would like you to meet them now too.

Until we raise enough to bring them to safety, we will share glimpses of their lives, plead for your spare resources, and encourage you to do your part in calling for the safety, justice, and rebuilding of Palestinian lives and homes. As we have shared in our communications, “We hope to meet one day after the war” so please help this become more than a hope, but a reality. Please follow @samah_safi132 and @ahmedwatfa039 on Instagram, reshare and repost, and give as you are able.

Sent with love, Bruce, Robin, Ev, Abby, and Analise

In what seems like a lifetime ago, I posted this a few weeks back after my return from my second delegation to Palestine. Even with all of the most recent acts of terror inflicted upon the people of Gaza and the accelerated violence in the occupied West Bank, I am still left with the same question as I have been posing since last year, “What will it take to speak out and act up?”

This video is crossposted on Instagram and TikTok, so any resharing or reposting would be much appreciated.

Transcript

As some of you know, I just returned from Palestine, my second trip this year. And once again, seeing how the Palestinian people are treated, it is heartbreakingly obvious that they live under oppressive occupation and a blatant apartheid state. If you have been silent up to now, I don't really know what more to say to convince you to act up and speak out in order to stop what the state of Israel with U. S. support is doing in Gaza and increasingly the West Bank.

  • How many more violent images have to show up on your screen in order for you to act?

  • How many more times do Palestinians need to put their trauma on display in order for them to be believed?

  • How much disproportionate destruction must you witness before you can drop the narrative that this is a conflict between equals?

  • How many times do you need to hear people like me before you will step out from behind the veil of complexity and privilege?

  • How much of your money needs to be spent on war before you will demand your public servants do better?

  • How many more futures will be extinguished before we collectively say enough is enough?

While some will judge you for your timing, it is not too late. While the road to peace and liberation will take generations, I believe this current onslaught only comes to an end if those of you who have been silent up until now finally choose to speak out. I hope you will. Peace.

On episode 63 of BRC and Friends and the final installment for Filipino American History Month 2023, I chat with Megan Reyes, journalist, podcaster, and content creator. Recently honored by Hashtag Sports as a creator of color, we not only talk about Megan's entry into sports broadcasting, but we also talked about growing up in Idaho, women's soccer, specifically the women's Philippines national team, and of course, that question and dilemma about being Filipino enough. We had a great time talking and I for one cannot wait to see what is ahead for Megan. Take a listen and you'll see why.

On Episode 62 I sit down with the founders and owners of my favorite Southern CA coffee joint, Obet & Del’s in Thai Town, Hollywood. After my recent stint in SoCal, this became one of my offices because of its local vibe, great staff, and mmm, that Filipino Iced Coffee. I sat down with Josh and Heather as we talked about the beginning of Obet & Del’s, building a culture where people thrive, being a Black/Filipino family, and my yearnings for a Husky Hot Filipino. You’ll just have to listen to get more on that. It was a great conversation and you’ll love getting to know them both.

On Episode 60 Dr. Dr. Robyn Magalit Rodriguez returns to the show to check in a year after leaving academia, and starting a farm. We talk about retirement from academia, what it means to start and maintain a farm, a commitment to nurturing a community and, of course the question, Are you Filipino enough? If this is the first time meeting Dr. Rodgriguez, you are in for a treat and some good old-fashioned healing of the heart, mind, and soul.

Thanks for being here! Grab a beverage, pull up a chair, and enjoy listening to my conversation with Dr. Robin Magalit Rogriguez.

On Episode 59 Laura and Bruce chat with Kalaya’an Mendoza from the Nonviolent Peace Force and Across Frontlines. We, of course, talk about nonviolence, how we address racism within our communities, and a whole lot of science fiction.

Kala has provided me with one of my favorite podcast moments ever.

If you do not know Kala, you are in for a treat.

On Episode 58 we continue our #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth series. Today, I sat down with Justher Gutierrez from Malaya South Bay, Camille Valerio from LEAD Filipino, and Mark Serrano from the Filipino Youth Coalition and Filipino American National Historical Society Santa Clara Valley. They helped me get to know the Filipino Community in the South Bay a bit more and shared all of the activities taking place this month. We also talked about what it means to be “Filipino enough,” when Filipino American History Month came into our view, and how ube has gone mainstream.

Thanks for being here! Grab a beverage, pull up a chair, and enjoy listening to my conversation with Justher, Camille, and Mark.

Today on episode 57, we launched Filipino American History Month here on BRC and friends. I chat with Kevin adult distinguished professor of psychology at City University of New York and the current president of Filipino American National Historical Society.

We have such a good time in this episode, as we talked about growing up in the bay area, Filipino American History Month doctoral work, what it means to be Filipino enough and a little drag and musicals, our paths have crossed, but we've never always sat down and talked.

So you get to kind of listen in as Kevin and I get to know one another, a bit. This was really a treat. So thanks for being here. I grab a beverage, pull up a chair and enjoy listening to my conversation with Kevin Nadal.

On this episode, Laura M Cheifetz I scramble to record after the most recent SCOTUS decisions about affirmative action. In this episode, we chat, rage, console, and inform about the definition and misconceptions of affirmative action, the challenges and disagreements within the Asian American Community, military exemptions, the impact of im/migration histories, college admissions, the model minority myth, solidarity with Black and Brown communities, and more. We also address the SCOTUS decisions about student loan debt forgiveness and LGBTQIA+ legal discrimination. It's a roller coaster, and neither of us will ever be able to run for office, but we hope it is helpful!

There is much swearing.

On today’s minisode Laura and Bruce chat with another of the BRC & Friends co-Hosts, our friend Micky ScotBey Jones, who in addition to being a lovely human, helps folks to do some self-reflection inner work using the Enneagram; and unlike Bruce and Laura, who may know just enough to be dangerous, Micky brings actual expertise with Ennegram coaching and certifications from the School of Conscious Living and The Narrative Enneagram.

In this episode, you’ll learn some history of the Ennegram, how it should or should not be used, some playful teasing about obnoxious enneagrammers, and Bruce kicks it off by asking the questions we’re all thinking, “Isn’t the Ennegram just for White people?”

So if you are an enneagram hater, inquirer, or card-carrying cult member, so 7 of you, you will get something out of our conversation. I am so grateful to have had this time with Micky so you all could get to know just a bit more about her humanity and her work with the Enneagram.

Thanks for being here! Grab a beverage, pull up a chair, and enjoy listening to our conversation with Micky Scotbey Jones.

E53 Bruce and Amy Kim chat with Gel CortezOn Episode 53 of BRC and Friends, Amy Kim and Bruce are joined by Dr. Angelica "Gel" Cortez. Gel is a strategist, cultural worker, and civic innovator recognized as one of https://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2020/08/07/angelica-cortez-svlg-is-a-40-under-40-honoree-2020.html (Silicon Valley's 40 under 40). Since 2015, she has led major campaigns and initiatives to increase the representation of FilAms in public service.  Gel currently resides in Eastside San Jose and has a damn cute furbaby, Soul, and she jumps right into the banter that is the charm of BRC & Friends. You will hear her passion, thoughtfulness, and sheer disappointment that I did not take Amy Kim to Jollibee's during her last visit. Amy Kim and I had a great time getting to know her and you will too! As usual, all the links are in the show notes. Side note: This is the first of a bunch of episodes featuring Filipino X folks as part of Filipino American HISTORY month, but because I am Filipino you kind of get that every episode. Founded by the http://fanhs-national.org/filam/ (Filipino American National History Society), Filipino American History Month focuses on historic events and happenings that have shaped our community not only on the cultural badassery and joy that exists within our community. Side note two: We had a little mic trouble with Amy Kim, so apologies for that. Thanks for being here! Grab a beverage, pull up a chair, and enjoy listening to our conversation with Dr. Gel Cortez. Welcome to The BRC & Friends Podcast where you will get to know activists, artists, academics, and adventurers who are committed to making the world a better place. In Episode 52, Bruce (he/him), along with co-host Laura Mariko Cheifetz (she/her) speaks with guest John Edgerton, lead pastor at First United Church of Oak Park, Illinois, and also the first white guest on the podcast since its reboot. Bruce begins by asking John and Laura, “What is something that you have no control over, but brings you joy.” But first, Bruce shares a personal update: he’s completed his tenure as pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Palo Alto. Thanks to long Covid, he’s taking a break but will still continue to podcast. John’s church in Oak Park recently became a target of right-wing ire when the congregation launched a Lenten program called ‘fasting from whiteness’ where they decided to only going to music composed by non-white composers. The news travelled far and wide — including to the UK, where it was covered by The Daily Mail — and John was at the receiving end of accusations of ‘reverse racism’ and the decision was called ‘wokeness run amok’. You’ll find out how Bruce got embroiled in all of this, waking up to a bunch of alerts on Google for his name. The hosts and guest also speak about Chicago’s history of segregation and anti-racist activism, and how white-centredness can be extricated from Christian culture. Thanks for listening! Welcome to The BRC & Friends Podcast where you will get to know activists, artists, academics, and adventurers who are committed to making the world a better place. In Episode 50 you get to meet the other two co-hosts of the show: Jorge Bautista (he/him) and Micky Scottbey Jones (she/her). Jorge is a pastor at a United Church of Christ congregation in San Mateo, California. Micky is a coach and justice doula, currently based in Nashville, Tennessee and she sees her work as a doula being translated to other avenues of life — where she accompanies people who are birthing something into the world. Bruce chats with his co-hosts to get to know them a bit better, starting with figuring out how he met both of them. Did he meet Micky at a conference and walk up to her after realizing they were the only two people of color in the room? He can’t remember, but this sounds quite realistic. Bruce and Jorge chat about how they met at a protest event in support of migrants crossing the border to the US, and about being handcuffed together in a police vehicle. You can expect chats about childhood memories evoked by scents (peach turnovers, microwaved popcorn) and why our hosts don’t fully understand why the NFL, horror movies, and beer are as widely liked as they are. SOME ADULT CONTENT PG-13+ Welcome to BRC & Friends, an uplifting podcast where Bruce Reyes-Chow talks with activists, artists, academics, and adventures who are committed to making the world a more thoughtful, loving, and just place. Each episode, Bruce is joined by some awesome co-hosts and guests as they discuss politics, faith, pop-culture, technology, and, as you will discover, pretty much everything that pops into their heads. Starting off Episode 49, on the right side of the sun with good friends and co-hosts, Amy Kim (pronounced Amy Kim) Kyremes-Parks and Laura Mariko Cheifetz. Amy and Laura have been friends with Bruce for quite some time and have no problem being an open book discussing their memorable childhood smells, sharing personal views regarding sports, and throwing in comedic jabs, which makes this podcast refreshing to tune into. If you wanted to use Amy Kim’s laugh for sound effects, I’m sure you could always hit her up about any inquiries. Speaking of refreshing, in this Episode, the trio touches on politics in sports and baseball, the mental toll on our children and teens in today’s world, memorable childhood smells, quotable therapy moments, tattoos, and how you shouldn’t go to Orange Theory with your mom. The knowledgeable and welcoming minds the three have, really makes you feel at home in this Episode. If you don’t know already Bruce Reyes-Chow, is an American Teaching Elder (Pastor) of the Presbyterian Church. Reyes-Chow received his BA in Asian American Studies, Sociology and Religion from San Francisco State University in 1990 and received his Masters of Divinity in 1995 from San Francisco Theological Seminary. He is loved by his wife, Robin, of 31 years and their 3 children. After living 30 years in San Francisco they decided to move to the bouje land of Palo Alto, where they’re still looking for legit Filipino food. If anyone knows good joints, slide into his Dm’s faster than Ross, of Friends, leathers up his pants with lotion. Amy Kim Kyremes-Parks, serves as Director of Formation for children, youth, and their families at a Presbyterian Church in North Carolina. Loved by her partner Justin, son Isaiah, daughter Natalie and of course two fur babies at home in Asheville, North Carolina. Her contagious laugh stretches all the way back to her hometown Salt Lake City, Utah. If you don’t like white gravy, then Amy just might be your person, click play to see what she has to say about it. Laura Mariko Cheifetz, not only is she most active on Twitter she is also active in the community as the Assistant Dean of Admissions, Vocation, and Stewardship. Loved by her partner Jessica Vazquez Torres, who is the National Program Manager for Crossroads Antiracism Organizing & Training and welcomed home by their rescue pup in Nashville, Tennessee. Quickly wanted to point out that Laura is originally from the Pacific Northwest, not Tennessee, where Signal video calls are a common way of communication in her household, while at home. Tune in to find out how she really feels about that. In this episode, I talk with Eliana Maxim and Scott Lumsden, Co-Executive Presbyters of Seattle Presbytery. In Presbyterian-Speak, they help to support churches and pastors in the Seattle area. I spoke with them because they were one of the early areas to respond to COVID-19 and offer guidance to local congregations. In segment one, they give some background to the situation in Seattle and how they came to the place to ask churches to cancel their services. Segment two, we talk about pastors and church leaders, the struggles they face, and the gifts they already possess. The final sement, as always, is about what they are watching, listening to, and reading. In this episode, Bruce talks with three people that he barely knows, but is sure they are awesome because they all work at Philz Coffee, Bruce's favorite coffee experience. After Bruce fanboys a bit about Philz (Seriously, where are the stock options?) they talk coffee, nerdy things, politics, music, and how the vote was 3-1 that last season of Game of Thrones sucked.Bonus points to Amanda for knowing Bruce's drink and shoutout to Emily for asking if he was okay after his third cup in a day.Be sure to connect with and follow — Philz Coffee: https://www.instagram.com/philzcoffee/ (https://www.instagram.com/philzcoffee/)Philz Middlefield: https://www.instagram.com/philzmiddlefieldrd/ (https://www.instagram.com/philzmiddlefieldrd/)Amanda: https://www.instagram.com/amandazaragosa/ (https://www.instagram.com/amandazaragosa/)Edward: https://www.instagram.com/edward_the_fourth_bright/ (https://www.instagram.com/edward_the_fourth_bright/)Steven's Podcast:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/better-men-podcast/id1457426427 (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/better-men-podcast/id1457426427)Listen to all of Bruce's Podcast tomfoolery on Spreakerhttps://www.spreaker.com/user/breyeschow (https://www.spreaker.com/user/breyeschow)Support Bruce's podcast-making over on Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/breyeschow (https://www.patreon.com/breyeschow)Connect with Bruce Reyes-ChowWebsite: http://www.reyes-chow.com (http://www.reyes-chow.com)Twitter: https://twitter.com/breyeschow (https://twitter.com/breyeschow)Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/breyeschow (https://www.instagram.com/breyeschow)Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/breyeschow (https://www.facebook.com/breyeschow)Bruce's dogs would be very happy if you subscribed to and rated this podcast and they would over the moon if you followed, liked, tagged, and shared this podcast on —Twitter: https://twitter.com/brcandfriends (https://twitter.com/brcandfriends)Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brcandfriends (https://www.instagram.com/brcandfriends)Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brcandfriends (https://www.facebook.com/brcandfriends)Spreaker: https://www.spreaker.com/show/brc (https://www.spreaker.com/show/brc)

In this episode, I sit down with Alison Wood from Presbyterian Peace Fellowship and The Young Adult Volunteer program. Alison drops much knowledge about accompaniment. We also touch upon our common love of the puppies, how awesome Philz is, pottery as a discipline, and a common enneagram kinship.
