If I had a dollar for every wrestler wearing red and black in the mid 2000’s I could have retired a lot earlier. I get it, we all have our favorite colors and specifically colors like red and black mesh well together. But, if you find yourself in a locker room surrounded by guys and gals dressed the same you should take that as an opportunity to stand out and switch your style for the evening or remember to come prepared to dress differently next time. When you break that curtain and step in front of the fans dressed in white or blue or bright green you are going to be the topic of conversation instantly. Your promos are more important than your matches. There, I said it. I don’t want to bury the lead today. Your ability to speak and emote through vocals and facial expressions to a live audience or to a camera is more important than your ability to do moves inside the ring. The pro wrestler who blows up (or becomes exhausted) inside the ring is a liability. A better way to put it is he or she is useless. It’s true that the wrestlers are the stars, but you cannot have a successful pro wrestling event without a variety of talented individuals. We’ve discussed the referees and how they essentially play the role of the third performer in any given match. We’ve also discussed the importance of being kind and communicating/networking with every individual associated with the show from your peers, the promoter, the camera operators, the photographers, the set crew, and yes, absolutely with the ring announcers and the commentary team. Those two roles specifically play a massive role in introducing and portraying your character to the audience both live and in subsequent viewings.

Over the past decade I’ve encountered quite a few wrestlers that left me scratching my head. And, no, I’m not talking about the ones who made me sigh and wonder why anyone ever let them set foot in a ring. I’m talking about wrestlers so talented they seem like they are ready for the big leagues. Unfortunately it’s not me that gets to make that decision, and even more unfortunately sometimes it’s only me and not even the wrestler themselves that see the talent! Sometimes you have to get out of your own head and recognize you have the tools you need to get out of your own way and conquer what we call Imposter Syndrome.
The world is full of people who want quick fixes. Pro wrestling is no different. Everyone wants everything and they want it fast. The problem is when I tell you how to make a quick fix by devoting a year to your physical health…you don’t see that as fast. 12 months is pretty fast if you ask me! That’s all it could take to absolutely transform yourself from who you are now if you are living a physically weak and fragile lifestyle. And as a professional wrestler if there are two things you can’t afford to be it’s weak and fragile. You can literally reverse the aging process by adding in strength training to your life.
The importance of social media cannot be understated in this era of pro wrestling. It is your resume. It is your business card. It’s your hotline to every single fan, friend, and potential employer on the planet. What you post on your timeline matters. If you neglect to keep some quality control on your social media you will suffer for it.

Make no mistake: we’ve talked about dozens of important things they need to happen during a match throughout the life of this podcast. Everything from how you interact with the ropes, the turnbuckles, the bumping and rolling on the mat, making eye contact with fans, being verbal and loud, and even making every single move/strike count from the ring row all the way to the 10th row. But none of that matters if you don't prioritize your health and your opponents health. You must keep each other safe. You may be playing opponents, but you are in fact partners. You are working together to craft a perfect experience for the fans that bought tickets to see you.

Well defined bullet points inside of a job description or on a resume are simple to comprehend. Once your skills develop to a certain point and there’s nothing left for you to learn it’s time for you to branch out and seek the uncomfortable. I hear it so much from people, new wrestlers and seasoned wrestlers alike: I wanna lose fat, I wanna get in shape, I want to look like Seth Rollins or Bianca Bel Air or Brock friggin Lesnar…but just as often I find myself asking if someone’s actions reflect that goal. Becoming a successful professional wrestler puts you in an elite class. Making enough money to sustain a family is hard, which means you have to be serious and realistic with your goals in the gym and in the kitchen. If you want to part of the upper echelon of pro wrestlers you have to train like them. You can do this without starving yourself, I promise, but it takes some work and today I want to talk about the 3 signs you aren’t actually trying to put in the work.

In early December the WWE signed 15 college athletes, including some with crazy social media followings to NIL contracts. NIL stands for Name, Image, Likeness. The NCAA recently passed into effect new rules allowing college athletes to monetize their name, image and likeness. Until this announcement businesses were not allowed to approach a college athlete to endorse products or companies, etc. WWE immediately capitalized and even went as far as rebranding NIL for their own purposes…dubbing it Next In Line. WWE is looking to use these new rules from the NCAA to pipeline developmental talent into their roster….but what does this mean to you, the independent pro wrestler?

What should a pro wrestler be doing in the gym? It’s almost taboo to talk about money in pro wrestling. The best of friends can turn enemies if a promoter pays one of them an extra $10. The truth is what you are paid by the promoter is highly irrelevant. That doesn’t mean you let the promoter off the hook. It means you should be making more money at the merchandise table.
