Song of Worship: “Way Maker”

Scripture Reading: Colossians 2:6-17

Song of Preparation: “Jireh”

Sermon: Jesus and the Sabbath

The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week on which Jews were expected to rest from their regular work.

  1. The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.
  2. "Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?"

What should be our attitude toward the Sabbath?

  1. We need to agree on what we mean by "Sabbath."
  2. Do Christians even need to keep the Sabbath?

Since Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath,
since the Sabbath was made for people, and
since the Sabbath points us to the rest that comes from God's salvation...

How should we observe the Sabbath today?

  1. Reevaluate how you are stewarding your time.
  2. Resist the temptation to compare yourself to other people in how you observe the Sabbath.
  3. Remember that the purpose of the Lord's Day is not to "make up" for the bad things we have done the other six days of the week.
  4. Redeem the time by serving the Saviour.
  5. Rest in Christ.

    • Everything that God created
    • The values and culture of fallen, sinful people
    • When I use the term, I mean anything that God has created, in particular all people who are not part of God's family (i.e., not a Christian)
  2. How should Christians view our connection to "the world"?
    • Should we say that the Christian position is always "against" the world
    • Should we say that the Christian position is always "for" the world?
    • You have probably heard the phrase, "Be in the world but not of the world"
  3. What does it actually mean to be "in the world but not of the world"?
    • We inhabit the same planet as non-believers
    • We participate in many of the same activities as non-believers
    • We stay away from participating in sinful activities with others
      • We also realize that this is one of those areas in which good, faithful Christians can disagree with one another
      • Live as faithful followers of Jesus without either sealing ourselves off from the people that Jesus Christ died for or compromising our witness to Christ by supporting things that are wrong.
    • We maintain an eternal perspective beyond present space and time: "This world is not my home"
  4. So, how should Christians connect to the world?
    1. Remember that God loves the world.
    2. Remember that both Jesus and we Christians are lights of the world.
      • Think of the difference between the greater light (the sun generates its own light) and the lesser light (the moon reflects light).
    3. Jesus came into the world to bear witness to the truth.
    4. We are ambassadors for Christ.
    5. The world is accountable to God.
    6. We should not conform to this world.
    7. God turns the world upside down.
    8. God is reconciling the world to Himself, in Christ.
  5. How can we, at Connexion Church, connect to our world?
    1. SERVING THE STRANGER
      • The Central Question: Who is my neighbour?
      • Read Luke 10:25-37 (Parable of the Good Samaritan)
      • Hospitality: welcoming the stranger
      • VISION: That we would be servant-neighbours to those outside the church.
    2. SEEKING THE LOST
      • The Central Question: Who is lost?
      • Read Luke 15:1-7 (Parable of the Lost Sheep)
      • VISION: That we would be a church that points people to Christ and brings people to Christ.
    3. STEWARDING ALL CREATION
      • The Central Question: What is stewardship?
      • Read Matthew 25:14-30 (Parable of the Talents)
      • VISION: That we would be found faithful with what God has given to us to steward.

    1. The Lord is just.
    2. The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

    4. "I will make you exceedingly fruitful.“
    5. "And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant.“
    6. "And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God."
  • God gives Abraham a new responsibility: circumcision
  • God provides further blessings:
    1. "You shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.“

    3. "As for Ishmael, I have heard you.“
  • Abraham’s responses
    1. “Abraham fell on his face and laughed.”
    2. “Oh that Ishmael might live before you.”
    3. But he obeyed anyway.
  • How about us?
    1. Now, like then, faith leads to obedience.
    2. Now, like then, circumcision of the heart trumps circumcision of the flesh.
    3. Now, like then, God is a covenant-keeping God.
    4. Now, unlike then, Jesus is God with us.
    5. There is a time for falling on your face and a time for getting up on your feet.

Scripture Passage: Genesis 15

Sermon Notes

Observations

  1. Abram was not immune to fear.
  2. Abram had to decide between following the way of sin and the way of the Lord.
  3. Abram had a growing personal relationship with the Lord.
  4. Abram asked the Lord about his posterity.
  5. Abram's faith was critical to Abram's response.
  6. Abram asked the Lord about his inheritance.

The Lord made a covenant with Abram

  1. Parties: individuals or groups who are included
  2. Conditions: the actions that each party must undertake
  3. Results: promised blessings of obedience and/or threatened punishments of disobedience
  4. Security: guarantee of fulfillment, often an oath or sacrifice

What did the covenant between the Lord and Abram mean for Abram?

  1. The covenant served as the basis for the Lord's future relationship with Abram and his descendants
  2. The covenant set the stage for future covenants.

But the covenant did not mean…

  • That Abram would be made righteous through his own works
  • That Abram and his descendants would experience uninterrupted prosperity and success
  • That Abram and his descendants could treat their special relationship with God as a get-out-of-jail-free pass to do whatever they want

What does the covenant between God and Abram mean for us?

  • We, too, see the distinction between those under the Lord's covenant and those who are not.
  • We begin to understand God's steadfast love to His covenant people.
  • We realize the significance of faith.
  • We begin to see the connection between faith and obedience.
  • We look forward, like Abram, to the promise of a greater inheritance and a greater country.
  • We, too, are empowered by faith instead of debilitated by fear.

IF statements

  • If there is any encouragement in Christ
  • If there is any comfort from love
  • If there is any participation in the Spirit
  • If there is any affection and sympathy

THEN

  • Complete my joy

HOW?

  • By being of the same mind
  • By having the same love
  • By being in full accord
  • By being of one mind
  • By doing nothing from selfish ambition or conceit
  • But by in humility counting others more significant than yourselves
  • By looking not only to one’s own interests
  • But by looking also to the interests of others
