However, as Brian explains, down cycles like this period, although hard to bear, are actually a healthy function of the economy. Brian explains how, for serious investors, it has now returned to business as normal. He expects there to be more time and energy for due diligence to play a greater role.

David Meltzer pops by for a brief chat with our host Ivan Zeljkovic in between the hustle and bustle at Web Summit 2022. The first point he discusses is the importance of discoverability as different and unique from merely being discovered.
David details how this newfound discoverability has led to exponential results, allowing his organizations to achieve extraordinary results such as connecting with the Obama Foundation and even being nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
With the media industry taking a beating in the stock markets, David ventures to explain what the key difference was. He believes that the key root of it all is a shift in consumer preference from being attracted to brands to being drawn into communities.
David shares much more about branding, marketing, and leadership such as:

Our very first interview at the Web Summit was with someone whose name is synonymous with change: Monika Mikac, CEO at NAD Capital. NAD Capital is a venture capital firm that chiefly invests in the automotive sector.
Known for being historically non-inclusive, Monika reports that she's seen the auto industry improve in leaps and bounds towards creating a welcoming environment for women and young girls. When Monika was young, she shares, she was one of the very few women in the automotive industry, but today she sees more young women entering into fields such as engineering, design, and other spaces that may have been previously under-represented among women. In many ways, the future of the automotive industry looks bright.
One of the most exciting aspects of mobility in the future is the prospect of electric vehicles. Specifically, Monika shares, how electric vehicles may revolutionize the way we approach transport from the ground up thanks to automation. Monika describes how, in the future, cars will be used more efficiently through ride-sharing and self-driving features.
Monika also discusses:

🎙 ABOUT THE EPISODE 🎙
It could be argued that most of our opinions about artificial intelligence are shaped by its cinematic depictions. But how does this futuristic technology actually work? And what are the real-world use cases for it that will make a difference in the way we work and live?
To answer these questions, we spoke to Sari Hweitat. Sari is the CEO and Co-Founder of Xina, the world’s first Arabic Interactive Voice Assistant and Chatbot. Xina uses artificial intelligence to automate customer care functions and allow businesses to free up their employees from repetitive tasks.
If YOU want to be a part of the next big thing, this episode is a must-watch as it digs into why the AI space is one you should carefully consider. Sari debunked some commonly held beliefs about AI, broke down some of the previously unsolvable problems that this technology is taking on, and finally dived into the unique challenges of starting a business in this field.

Award-winning entrepreneur Ahmed Ben Chaibah opens the story of AquaFun with a moment at the beach. While relaxing in the sun, Ahmed overheard a parent complain about how they wished their kids could have fun in a way that let them have peace. The single lightbulb moment led Ahmed to build what would eventually become the biggest inflatable waterpark in the world.
Ahmed shares how success does not come without brave, inspired risk. He shares how he let himself go into debt in order to finance the structuring of the waterpark into its iconic Dubai shape. Years later, the 44,000 square-meter waterpark has expanded into what Ahmed describes as "the biggest bouncy castle in the world".
And still, Ahmed's ideas keep flowing. He shares his vision for the future of AquaFun, and how they can incorporate advertising in inventive new ways. Listen to the episode to learn more about Ahmed's inspiring journey and ambitious vision, such as:

It's pretty safe to say that when it comes to Metaverse, most of us feel completely lost. It might even seem like something straight out of science fiction, like Ernest Cline's imaginings of the OASIS in Ready Player One.

Come along for the ride as Amrita gives us the lowdown on...
This is an unmissable conversation for anyone who wants to stay at the forefront of this technological advancement and understand how they can be a part of the future it is creating.

Much of the current innovation in the fintech space focuses on empowering the unbanked and the underbanked to have access to crucial financial services. One people group that has been continually overlooked is Gen Z (ages 11-25), who only have access to cash or their parents' cards to make payments. Zywa is on a mission to change that.
Zywa is a social banking app and prepaid card created specifically for Gen Z, allowing teenagers to spend, receive and manage money completely cashlessly. They can also earn rewards and interact with their friends on the app, and parents are even able to send money to their kids to cover expenses in a controlled environment.
Zywa was inspired by the lived experiences of its co-founders. Alok Kumar (CEO) and Nuha Hashem (CTO) grew up in the gulf region and identified the pain points of young people who were stuck with borrowing their parents' cards or asking for cash to make payments. They recently raised $3 million in seed funding which they will use to fuel their growth in the UAE and expand into Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

GrubTech co-founder and CEO Mohamed Al Fayed has walked a fascinating journey. He describes himself as a "late bloomer" who took a while to figure out his passions and what makes him tick. He started restoring cars and selling ambulances before finding a niche in merchandise planning at Macy's and the Al Tayer Group.
These roles cultivated a skill for pattern recognition that helped him spot the opportunity for digital transformation within Al Tayer. He spearheaded the Omnichannel Division, crafting a digital presence for many of their luxury brands and orchestrating the region's first 2-hour delivery last mile for Ounass. In the summer of 2019, his adeptness for recognising patterns led him to start GrubTech, a plug and play end-to-end operating system for restaurants and cloud kitchens. GrubTech is currently in 16 countries and shows no signs of slowing down.
Mohamed joins us on The Change Officer Podcast to share his key learnings from his story as a proven intrapreneur and successful entrepreneur. He spoke about how failing fast and keeping on running has served him well in his career, fostering intrapreneurship within corporates and where great new opportunities are likely to arrive in the tech sector.

Sanad Yaghi's startup Dukkantek began with a single question: "How can you deliver groceries from mom-and-pop shops that can't afford to list their products on an aggregator?" Sounds simple, right? Think again.
Coming up with the answer proved to be a complex task. Sanad and his co-founders quickly realised they had to solve these small merchants' broader problems of inventory management, POS and lack of a digital presence. They spent 6-months going store-to-store and talking to the vendors before coming up with their solution. The result? A revolutionary store management platform that "spread like hot cakes" and is changing the lives of small business owners across Kuwait, the UAE and Oman.
24-year-old Sanad stepped up to the mic on The Change Officer Podcast to share Dukkantek's fascinating story with our host Vuk. They spoke about the nitty-gritty of what goes into creating a successful social impact startup. Jam-packed with practical nuggets of advice, this is an unmissable episode for young startup founders who want to make a difference in their communities.

The days of "spray and pray" investing are done, at least according to Kareem Anabtwai, the Chief Investment Officer for Annex Investments. Kareem believes the future of the VC space lies in collaboration, conscious, considered alignments between startups and investors, and, above all else, everyone involved doing their homework.
Kareem started his career in investment banking fresh out of college. When his employer closed down around the time the pandemic hit the globe, Kareem decided to focus on his true passion: finding promising startups in the tech space with a strong focus on social impact and giving them the capital, the connections and resources they need to thrive. He soon found himself at Annex Investments, being mentored by its founder and CEO Ahmed Nasser Al Nowais. Today, he has already closed two significant deals, and with his keen eye for spotting future changemakers and more deals in the pipeline, Kareem is destined to make waves in this industry sector.
Kareem joined our host Vuk Zlatarov in our studio to discuss how venture capitalists can benefit MENA's ecosystem by strategically investing in startups to which they can add value. They also spoke about the importance of not getting starstruck by the "hottest" deals, and how investors can recognise a good deal when it is presented to them.
Tune in to the full episode to find out: - Why it is crucial for startups and investors alike to do their research when considering a deal - How building a healthy ecosystem of co-investors can benefit the VC space in MENA - Where we can expect the big boom in MENA's tech sector - How the Metaverse, cryptocurrency and NFTs are going to change the world as we know it

The idea that much of today’s cash use will shift to digital tokens is not outlandish. But will it be a private cryptocurrency? Think about it: governments will want to retain control of what circulates as money in their economies.
By the end of the current decade, the e-wallet on our smartphones could resemble a multicurrency account. But instead of dealing with commercial banks, you may be a customer of Central banks.
CBDC - Central bank digital currency, is a new type of currency that governments around the world are experimenting with.
Where will the future of money lead us, find out from a passionate leader of digital finance - Ronit Ghose, Global Sector Head for Banks Research, Co-Head of the FinTech Group at Citi!

We're honored that for our 50th episode we can introduce you to a special guest who will teach us a lot about probably the most important topic in today’s world: environmental sustainability. 👇 Did you know that buildings consume more energy than the whole transportation industry? And if everyone in the world lived in highly developed countries, we would need 7 Earths to supply us with the amount of resources we are currently using?
'Energy efficiency' has become a buzzword for environmentalists, politicians, advertisers, and energy companies alike. We hear it everywhere in these climate-conscious times.
The amount of energy we use or waste has a direct impact on the environment and on our wallets. Just by being mindful of our energy use and making a few simple tweaks, we can help save money and cut our carbon footprint.
This is what motivated Charles Blaschke IV when he launched Taka Solutions in 2012, with the aim to address the waste of energy in the region, caused by the poor and unhealthy construction of buildings in the UAE.
Tune in to our 50th episode and learn about: 💡How buildings contribute to climate change 💡Why hasn't efficiency scaled 💡Taka Solutions' business model where clients pay only when they save 💡Biggest opportunities in energy efficiency market right now.
Charles also shared great resources on where you can learn more on this topic: hop on 29:30 to catch them! We're grateful for all the thought-provoking statistics, information, and ideas Charles has shared with us.

Does it really make sense to own a car if it's parked for 95% of its entire lifetime? Will car-sharing trump car ownership over the next few years?
That's what our guest asked himself while relaxing in a pool back in 2016 - when an idea of car sharing popped into his head. He grabbed the opportunity to what we know today as the Middle East's first and largest carshare operator.
Vilhelm Hedberg is the Founder of ekar, a fast-growing company that provides users on-demand access to a network of thousands of car-share and subscription leasing vehicles. Or in Vilhelm's words - it's the Netflix of cars. His competitor isn't Uber, the competitor is the car owner himself.
In this conversation, Vilhelm brings us a fresh perspective of the car rental industry and the future of the transportation industry in general.
In this episode we cover: - How to balance growth and profitability in the mobility services business - How customer data can help fuel innovation in the car industry - Bypassing the distributor and selling directly to customers - Putting the right team together when starting a business.
