Announcements and Reminders * + Once we’re able to secure a date that is safe for us all to be together (early/mid-summer as a best guess), I will return to VA for a final service at SJ.  My hope is that we can gather for 1.5 hours on the day before to practice and socialize. Until then, you are more than welcome to make arrangements to collect your music –and handchimes if you want to practice at home.  Stay safe and God Bless you all!!

Dearest Choristers,

Dearest Singers:

Closing this chapter of my life has been difficult to grasp with the challenges presented to us all due to the COVID-19 virus. My heart is heavy knowing that I won’t be able to see you all for quite a while. I had hopes of a celebration marking the numerous achievements that we’ve conquered together before the move…but, that must be paused for another day. Instead, I am buoyed by your words of kindness and positivity until we’re able to have one final Sunday together.

As I packed my office over the last couple of weeks, I’ve reflected on the last six and a half years. When I arrived at Saint James, we were in an awkward dance of sorts. The learning curve that faced all of us was a bit daunting. It goes without saying that we had several stressful moments as we struggled to grasp new ideas, some that were quite alien, or contemplate why a certain concept was necessary. As we negotiated those tenuous moments and grew to trust each other, a strong community emerged which began to confidently lead the parish into a new realm of worship. During those times and in candid moments I had the chance to connect with each of you and make lifelong friends. Thank you for opening yourselves to me and accepting me as I am.

Remember the good things—think of all the new music that you, at first, thought impossible to master: Requiems by Neil Harmon and Gabriel Faure; a Schubert Mass; numerous works by Mendelssohn and Stanford, and let’s not forget THE MESSIAH (!!). Hand-in-hand with these monsters of the classical tradition, you welcomed music from around the world – Celtic works from Iona; Bluegrass/Gospel; and Spirituals. Think of all the pieces that you initially thumbed-down like a kid does to Brussel sprouts, but after a few rehearsals added it to your favorites —how about the moment that Anglican Chant finally clicked???

As we wrestle with mixed emotions, I hope that you’re able to pause and reflect on our last moments together as a full choir. Lent I had a few interesting bumps along the way, but I am so proud of the musicianship you gave to that arrangement of Steal Away. That’s the first time that you’ve had the confidence to sing unaccompanied AND had the piece practically memorized. I was thrilled as your director and I know the parishioners were inspired.

Keep the energy moving forward even during this uncertain time. Please keep your minds open to new concepts and music as the next director as is selected and begins their time at SJ. Regardless of the director, YOU are the choir and an incredibly important ministry of this church.

Thank you for the laughs, the challenges, the beautiful memories, and your unending support through the years.

Stay in touch and keep the music alive.

With love,

Jesse

Looking Ahead:

I’d really like to have the children’s choir sing on my return trip to VA, which, is an unknown at this point. Most likely, this will be early/mid-summer, and I’d like to use the piece below as part of the service so that adult choir, children’s choir, and bells will all be together one last time under my direction.

Thank you all for the opportunity to work with your children–they are brilliant and very talented. Please keep them engaged with the music program; they’ll never regret it!

Feed My Lambs – N. Sleeth

Feed my lambs, tend my sheep, over all a vigil keep;
In my Name lead them forth gently as a shepherd.
Wen they wander, when they stray, their protector be.
As ye do unto My flock, thus ye do to Me.
Feed my lambs, tend my sheep, over all a vigil keep;
In my Name lead them forth gently as a shepherd.
Unto all who lose the way, Hope and comfort be.
As ye do unto My flock, thus ye do to Me.
Feed my lambs, tend my sheep, over all a vigil keep;
In my Name lead them forth gently as a loving shepherd of the Lord.

  • Looking Ahead:
  • Holy Week
    • Fr. Ben and Bishop Ted have developed a series of liturgies that will have the most impact for those worshiping at home. The entire parish will receive a packet of sorts containing information as a guide to experience worship at home. I wish we could have utilized the music that we’d be preparing, but please look at it positively—we’re preparing for a “grand meetin'” when we all get together again.

    • I hope that we will be back to “normal” by the end of April–if that’s the case, let’s tentatively plan to have a rehearsal and celebration time on Saturday 4/24 from 12PM – 1:30PM (celebration with choir at 12-12:30; rehearsal at 12:30-1:30). • Holy Week:
    • There’s much uncertainty about what we will be able to accomplish as a choral community for Holy Week, and I will keep you updated as best possible without overwhelming your inboxes.
  • Looking Ahead:
    • The Requiem: Regardless of the season, this piece is an effective work for the current world status. Please continue to practice at home–the group e-mail contains all the tracks as attachments. Let me know if you’d like to collect your score–I can make “hands-off” arrangements for you.
    • If we are able to return to normal by mid-April, please listen to the music I’ve selected for 4/26, and pencil-in a Saturday rehearsal and celebration for 4/25 from 10AM – 12:30PM. This is very much subject to change, but it doesn’t hurt to have a plan.
    • Below the listing for May 17 you’ll see a link for tentative summer anthems–I’ve listed these pieces as a guide for Ryan, whom will be the interim director and Rene, the interim organist. Take a listen and let these pieces guide you through this season towards a, hopefully, healthy summer.

Looking Ahead:

  1. Please invite friends both in church and the community to join our children’s choir–we’ve just began to use fun Orff instruments as well as percussion with our music. We strive for every rehearsal to be fun as we learn something new each time we gather together.
  2. Schedule shift: No children’s choir after church 3/1 and I have to move 3/3 rehearsal to Wednesday 3/4–I’ve been called out of town next week and send my apologies for a jumbled schedule.

Tentative Schedule for Spring 2020

3/8 – God So Loved the World – John D. Horman

God so loved the world, that to us a son was giv’n.
And who-so-ever believes in Him shall live forevermore.
God so loved the world, that to us a son was giv’n.

4/5 – Palm Sunday: Hosanna!

Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

4/28 – Last Rehearsal for the spring.

5/3 – Children’s Eucharist: Feed My Lambs – N. Sleeth

Feed my lambs, tend my sheep, over all a vigil keep;
In my Name lead them forth gently as a shepherd.
Wen they wander, when they stray, their protector be.
As ye do unto My flock, thus ye do to Me.
Feed my lambs, tend my sheep, over all a vigil keep;
In my Name lead them forth gently as a shepherd.
Unto all who lose the way, Hope and comfort be.
As ye do unto My flock, thus ye do to Me.
Feed my lambs, tend my sheep, over all a vigil keep;
In my Name lead them forth gently as a loving shepherd of the Lord.
