My Side of the Mountain: Recent Episodes

I will be reading chapter by chapter from the book, My Side of the Mountain, by Jean Craighead George. With remote learning in place for students across the nation and the world, I wanted to be sure my own students had access to great books. What better way than to hear their teacher reading a book to them!
Well, it’s time for all good things to come to an end. We finally get to hear how Sam Gribley ends his adventure. It’s bittersweet. I always feel like when I finish a book I’m leaving a good friend behind. But the great thing is we will always have the memories of the story that we listened to together during this really unique time of distance-learning. I hope you enjoy the end and consider reading the next two books.
Sam continues to share his experience of living in the deep winter months on the mountain.
Sam is actually enjoying the winter season now that he is prepared. He has 2 visitors come for Christmas and there are newspaper articles reporting about a “wild boy”.
Autumn is settling in all around Sam and he prepares for a long, cold winter. He also finds out that the animals are more human like than he ever imagined. Find out how he learns to survive the bitter cold days ahead of him.
In these three chapters we learn how Sam is living off the land and how another human stays with him for awhile. Frightful is becoming quite the hunter. It is the height of summer and Sam is really enjoying living on the old Gribley land.
During these next few chapters we learn how Sam acquires new “friends” and how he tries avoiding the humans he encounters. Sam is becoming quite the hunter and cook. He’s proving to himself that he can survive in the woods.
Follow Sam as he makes his way toward Gribley’s farm. Will he master fire building, find enough to eat, or settle on a place to live? Listen and find out!
In this episode I introduce our new read aloud. The beginning is explaining how the author came about writing this novel. It also gets me to thinking about when I was young and whether or not I wanted to run away from home like the main character in the story.
