Kairos-Milwaukie United Church of Christ presents “Only What Is Whole Can Be Holy”. The reflection by Rev. Jeanne Randall-Bodman presented on Sunday, September 1, 2024.

“…Whatever is in our heart, whether it is joy or rage, resentment or mercy, fear or love, meanness or loveliness; whatever is in there will spill out on to others. No matter how we try to disguise it, our hearts will make themselves known. Which leads me to the question: what are you doing to take care of your heart? How is your heart? How are you caring for it? For our hearts to be whole, they must be tended… In order for good to come out of our hearts, our hearts must be grounded, our hearts must be whole.”

Liberating Words:

Song of Songs 2: 8-13

James 1: 17-27

Mark 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23

“The story of Easter reassures us that hope is stronger than despair, love is stronger that hate, life is stronger than death, and that with God nothing is impossible. God is with us in every human moment. Our fear and wonder can coexist with our joy. The story has not ended and it is always starting anew in us.”

“This is our high calling: to help get the Jesus we have known, the Jesus of compassion, and justice and joy, out of the confines that tradition has made for him. To help a hurting world see the beauty, freedom and truth in the Jesus we have known.”

Kairos-Milwaukie United Church of Christ presents “Truth Telling”. The reflection by Rev. Jeanne Randall-Bodman presented on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

“If we don’t know where we are, how are we going to get further along? Truth telling about where we are and where we’ve been is not meant to leave anyone in shame. It may include repentance, and transformation, and new life, but that is the opposite of shame. Shame keeps us small and trapped; un-free and unable to live fully; unable to give and accept love freely.”

Kairos-Milwaukie United Church of Christ presents “Together in Light”. The reflection by Rev. Jeanne Randall-Bodman presented on Sunday, February 25, 2024.

“We have the capacity to re-light the spark of life in one another, the light of existence, light that has been embedded in our very souls. And maybe that’s why Jesus, the light, said ‘when two or more are gathered’, because in that gathering we become aware of the shared light that we are participating with and in. Together in light we can find a path toward justice. Gathered around those who are suffering, we share our light and receive back light.”

“When we look back at these days, what will we be able to say that we were up to? What false narratives about Christianity did we unearth in ourselves? Were there false narratives about Christianity in the public square? And did we deplore them without answering them with a more joyful, liberating message?”

“Two things are true: life is so beautiful; life is so hard. But, the most true thing, the good news we hold fast to is that we are not alone. We are under the shelter of God’s presence and woven together in love and mutuality.”

God’s help maybe looking directly into the eyes of someone you trust… and having them look directly back at you and say ‘I see you still as human; I see you still as holy and worthwhile.’”

“This is the invitation I hear today for the Second Sunday of Advent, our Sunday of Peace: Listen for the echoes of John calling you out into the wilderness, beyond where you think you can go. Listen for the echoes of Jesus, the anointed one, teaching, healing and empowering you with the Holy Spirit to carry on the message that God is near, peace is possible, and we all, every human one of us, are beloved.”

Kairos-Milwaukie United Church of Christ presents “The Invitation of Advent”. The reflection by Rev. Jeanne Randall-Bodman presented on Sunday, December 3, 2023.

“The invitation of Advent is to hold two truths tightly with open hands: the world is desolate, the world is beautiful; people are capable of and seem determined to carry out immense evil; people are capable of and seem determined to carry out immense good; evil is real and powerful, God is real and good and foundational and more lasting that evil. All these things are true, and God is with us through all of it. Deep in the gathering dark, something tender is forming, something beautiful, something for the world’s saving waits to be born.”

Kairos-Milwaukie United Church of Christ presents “Grounded in Gratitude”. The reflection by Rev. Jeanne Randall-Bodman presented on Sunday, November 26, 2023.

“In our current capitalist culture, which will be clamoring at us for the next month especially loudly, threatened as we are by would-be fascists, being grounded in gratitude, this kind of gratitude for the abundance beneath us, is a revolutionary act, reminding us that we do not live in scarcity, that scarcity is caused by some hoarding abundance.”
