The annual SEEK Scholarship and Award celebrates the academic achievements of students and recognizes their service contribution to the college and community. Graduating seniors are especially highlighted for their perseverance and earning their degrees which transform their lives and that of their families.The ceremony recognizes SEEK alumni who have distinguished themselves in their chosen professions, provide leadership in their communities and continue to engage with the SEEK program beyond graduation. The members of the SEEK Program believe it is essential to recognize the effort required to overcome the environmental, financial, educational and language barriers confronting many in the SEEK population.Baruch faculty and staff who have contributed outstanding service to the SEEK Program are also acknowledged.The Baruch College SEEK Scholarship Fund was established in 1971 to provide scholarships to a selected number of students who have distinguished themselves among their peers and reached the highest level of academic excellence and outstanding service to the community. Scholarships are dispersed annually during the ceremony and this time of year peak time for contribution to the fund.

Baruch College held its 2023 CommencementCeremony on Tuesday, May 30 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, conferring degreesto 5,795 undergraduate and graduate students from the Marxe School of Publicand International Affairs, the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, and theZicklin School of Business. Baruch College President S. David Wu presided over the exercises, and Linda Essig,Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, served as the master ofceremonies. The Class of 2023 includes more than 4,100 undergraduates, over1,600 graduate degree recipients, and four graduates receiving doctoratedegrees. Speakers and honorary degree recipients are Hamdi Ulukaya, Founder andCEO of Chobani and Sam Pollard, Film Director and Screenwriter.
Eugene M. Lang Junior Faculty Research Fellowship reception was held on Baruch campus. The celebration was introduced by the Provost LindaEssig. A total of nine faculty members received the awards.

Last November 2022, OpenAI unleashed ChatGPT, a free chatbot thatcreates text using AI technology. ChatGPT demonstrates remarkable abilities,such as passing exams from law, business, and medical schools and itstext-generation capabilities have also been used for simpler tasks such as towriting Shakespearean sonnets, discussing complicated topics, and composingheartfelt love songs. As the hype around ChatGPT continues to grow, new ethicalconcerns are emerging about the development and use of AI tools.
In the chat,Professor Yafit Lev-Aretz and Professor Nizan Packin discuss the current stateof ethics in artificial intelligence and machine learning, and the importanceof responsible AI in today’s society. Participants will have the opportunity toengage in the discussion, ask questions, and share their own experiences andperspectives on the ethical considerations of ChatGPT.

On May 3, 2019, ten teams of CUNY students competed for prizes in the final round of the 2019 CUNY IBM Watson Social Impact Challenge. The mission of this competition is to provide CUNY students with the opportunity to apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to solve problems facing NYC’s public sector. The students developed and utilized essential skills such as critical thinking, communication skills and technological literacy to help solve concrete policy challenges. Stan Altman, PhD, Professor at Baruch College’s Marxe School of Public and International Affairs and Stan Litow, former President of the IBM Foundation and its Citizenship Program, conceived this idea four years ago. With support from IBM, the Donald and Shelley Rubin Foundation, Baruch College and CUNY, over 1,000 students have participated in these competitions. This year, 210 students from 19 of CUNY’s 25 campuses joined the challenge, demonstrating the demand for experience-based learning opportunities to solve real world problems, using 21st century technology such as IBM’s Watson technology. The 11 students on the top three winning teams this year developed tools to reduce suicide rates among veterans, ease student attrition at CUNY and help New York City Transit improve the efficiency of its maintenance systems.

Previously known as CUNY-IBM Watson Case Competition, CUNY-IBM Watson Social Impact Challenge is a semester-long experience designed to improve the academic achievement and social engagement of the City University’s diverse student population through project-based learning focused on using applied IBM Watson AI technologies to solve social problems.
Moderated by Stanly Altman, Professor from the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs (MSPIA), Baruch College, this workshop was presented by two IBM developer advocates, Helen Lam and Nicolas Bourdakos. The topic is on Wason AI, API, and Cloud computing services.
This event was moderated by Mona Jha, Chief Diversity Officer of Baruch College. The 2019 Women’s History Month highlighted ACLU attorney Gillian Thomas for a discussion of her book, Because of Sex: One Law, Ten Cases, and Fifty Years That Changed American Women’s Lives at Work, which chronicles the Supreme Court’s landmark sex discrimination cases, and of what that history can teach us about the fight to achieve gender justice on the job. The topic for the day’s presentation is entitled “Sex Discrimination at Work: Then and Now.”
The Color of Law examines the history of government-sponsored residential racial segregation in the U.S., providing a national perspective to Mr. Rothstein’s recent report "The Making of Ferguson: Public Policies at the Root of Its Troubles."

Baruch College presents a Presidential Policy Preview. What can we expect from his administration in the first 100 days? Will he push to have his agenda implemented in the form he expressed it in the campaign, or will he modify his goals once in office? Will the new president and the Congress be allies, or will they fight over budgets and policy priorities? Baruch has assembled an expert panel to provide brief overviews of nine policy and procedural arenas, including defense, immigration, workforce, education, the Supreme Court, and the role of the Congress.

The 3rd Annual IVE Faculty Development Seminar provides an introduction to Virtual Enterprise, a set of instructional and technical tools to promote an entrepreneurial approach to higher education. In this two-day seminar, presenters highlight a series of discipline-agnostic entrepreneurship education pedagogies and methods that can be organized across the entrepreneurship education spectrum, ranging from awareness, to simulation to incubation and launch. At the center of the discussion will be an innovative approach to use action research as a mechanism to help bridge theory and practice by infusing entrepreneurship curricula and pedagogies into science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs.
Day 1: "A Look at Virtual Enterprise": Participants learn the basics of the Virtual Enterprise pedagogy and the tools and events that support it. Virtual Enterprise links CUNY campuses with CUNY Student Enterprises (Incubator) in campus based entrepreneurship outposts.

18th Annual Dr. Donald H. Smith Distinguished Lecture presents Susan L. Taylor, Founder & CEO, National CARES Mentoring Movement and Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Essence Magazine. Ms. Taylor was the first and only African American Woman to be recognized by the Magazine Publishers of America with the Henry Johnson Fisher Award—the industry's highest honor—and the first to be inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors Hall of Fame. She is the recipient of the NAACP President's Award for visionary leadership and has honorary degrees from more than a dozen colleges and universities.

He is also the founding director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute at the City University. Dr. Torres-Sallant has authored and edited numerous books, including An Intellectual History of the Caribbean. The title of his lecture is, “Dominican Blackness, Unforgivable Haiti, and Western Modernity.”

Each year, a committee of faculty, students, and administrators selects a book for the entire Baruch community to read and discuss. The freshman text for 2012-2013’s selection is Brooklyn by Colm Toibin. The novel is about a young woman who immigrates to New York to study accounting at Brooklyn College. Today’s keynote address is presented by the Colm Toibin, the author of the book. Brooklyn was also the subject of the keynote address by another Irish author, Belinda McKeon, at Freshman Convocation, scheduled for Thursday, August 23rd.

One of the most influential thinkers and writers on civil rights discourse, Professor Derrick Bell addresses the racial and social justice issues at the 13th Dr. Donald H. Smith Distinguished Lecture. Professor Bell is a noted legal scholar and visiting professor of law at New York University. Among Professor Bell's books on race, the constitution and the law are Faces at the Bottom of the Well: the Permanence of Racism, Race, Racism and American Law and And We are Not Saved: the Elusive Quest for Social Justice. Professor Bell is introduced by Dr. Dr. Stanton Biddle.

Mangels, Associate Professor of Psychology, Baruch College, and the doctoral program in Psychology, The Graduate Center, CUNY, delivers the keynote address of Baruch's Eleventh Annual Teaching and Technology Conference. Dr. Mangels discusses classroom dynamics and how student and teacher achievement goals influence learning success. The presentation is based on her research utilizing human electrophysiology (EEG) and functional imaging (fMRI) methods to examine the relationship between motivation, attention and learning. Dr. Mangels is Principal Investigator of Baruch's Dynamic Learning Lab.

"Edward Deci, Professor of Psychology and Gowen Professor in the Social Sciences at the University of Rochester, gives a lecture on facilitating motivation and Psychological Well-Being in Universities as part of the Baruch College Master Teacher Series for faculty development.
Professor Deci is a founder of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), one of today’s most influential motivational theories. He writes of his work: “I examine a variety of issues in human motivation, isolating basic processes and testing their application to education, health care, parenting, mental health, and work organizations in the U.S. and across cultures. Using both laboratory and field methods, my work focuses primarily on the nature and development of self-determination.”

"The final round of the 4th Annual Baruch College Ethics Bowl featured two undergraduate teams engaged in a debate over ethical responsibilities for the subprime mortgage crisis. The winning team featured Erjon Xholi, Anthony Hernandez, and Sean Perryman. The second place team was comprised of Darren Tang, Dmitriy Povazhuk, and Patrick Willis. Sarah Ryan, Professor at the School of Public Affairs, hosts the debate.
Following the Ethics Bowl final round, Baruch benefactor and alumnus Charles R. Dreifus speaks about the Abraham J. Briloff Prizes, followed by a speech by Professor Briloff. James McCarthy, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, introduces the Briloff faculty and student prize winners: Donald H. Schepers, Professor of Management and undergraduate student Adriana Aldarondo.
The Ethics Bowl was made possible by generous contributions from Larry Chong and Leigh Abrams. The Abraham J. Briloff Prizes are funded by a gift from alumnus Charles R. Dreifus (’66, MBA ’73) in honor of Abraham J. Briloff, Emmanuel Saxe Distinguished Professor of Accountancy Emeritus.
