The HIMS Nightmare is a practical guide to surviving the “Human Intervention Motivation Study” program for pilots who are in recovery from substance abuse, or who are sucked into the program despite not being addicted to mood-altering substances. The HIMS program is not what it is portrayed to be.
Developed in 1974 as a means for returning substance-abusers to the cockpit, HIMS has grown to become a monster intended to put as many pilots as possible under the complete control of their employers, who may have their required FAA medical certificates revoked at any time, for any reason.
HIMS relies almost entirely on outmoded “Twelve Step Facilitation Therapy,” which is itself based almost solely on the tenets of Alcoholics Anonymous. AA was formed in 1935 and has changed little since. Although the rate of recovery for AA alone is abysmal, HIMS claims high rates of recovery which are, in truth, the result of participants who are threatened with loss of the careers, and intrusive monitoring requirements which may stretch in duration to include a pilot’s entire career.

Larry is licensed psychologist and attorney. He obtained his Doctor of Psychology in 1981 and his JD in 1992. As a psychologist, Larry's practice focused on the behavioral aspects of chronic pain syndromes. He was the Clinical Director of several multidisciplinary chronic pain rehabilitation programs in the 1980's. These programs addressed the disability related behaviors and the opiate and sedative dependence that impacted chronic pain syndromes. As an attorney, his focus was on medical negligence claims. He represented a number of families who lost loved ones as a result of accidental overdoses of prescription opiate medications.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) - April 2, local author and associate professor of English at Columbus State University, Joe Miller has released a new book, US of AA: How the Twelve Steps Hijacked the Science of Alcoholism.
Miller is the author of 2006's Cross-X: The Amazing True Story of How the Most Unlikely Team from the Most Unlikely of Places Overcame Staggering Obstacles at Home and at School to Challenge the Debate Community on Race, Power, and Education, which won the William Rockhill Nelson Award and Harry Chapin Award for nonfiction in 2007, and was selected as one of the best books of the year by the Chicago Tribune, Kansas City Starand Publishers Weekly.
Now, the US of AA takes readers through the history of the Alcoholics Anonymous program, offering for "the first time, a complete expose" of AA and "how it became America's de facto cure" for alchol rehabilitation.
Miller, an investigative reporter and author, writes the history of the Twelve Step program from its inception, following the beginnings of the program through the early days of the program founders to the present day.
Starting in 1934, Miller details how AA became the "defacto treatment policy for alcoholism in the U.S.," beginning with its "quasi-religious" origins. Utilizing years of research, Miller's book "explores the science and politics of alcoholism by bringing to life the characters that played pivotal roles in its dark history."

In 2010, with seven years of struggle-free sobriety, Teresa knew that the traditional path of getting and living sober was not helping enough people. Sure enough the Professor talked about how switching from using the words "I and me" to "Us and We", a person starts to make differnent conections with the group being more important. AA is filled with that. AA very directly says in its literature that the "Group must live or the individual will surely DIE" ! No science in that. This memo is a good beginning but still coming from a Multi Million dollar Non profit- Its total BS that they think they do not have to have a Sexual harassment Policy.

Joseph Gerstein was the Founding President of the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Self-Help Network, Inc., d/b/a SMART Recovery in 1994. He introduced Rational Recovery into the Greater Boston area, then oversaw its spread throughout Massachusetts. In 1994, he participated in the creation of the new non-profit entity: SMART Recovery. Subsequent to his term as President, he was elected Treasurer, a post he held until elected President again for 2017. Dr. Gerstein has at various times served on the Boards of 10 non-profit organizations. He has served on a variety of Committees of SMART Recovery.
Dr. Gerstein practiced Internal Medicine and Pain Management at a Harvard-affiliated hospital and served as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine on that Faculty for almost 30 years. In 1987 he formed Mount Auburn Community Independent Practice Association, the most successful such entity in Massachusetts, which now has over 500 physicians and 70 employees. For the last 10 years of his career he also served as Medical Director or Senior Vice-President of Tufts Health Plans, a non-profit HMO recently rated #1 in the US by US News & World Report. While there, he sued TAP Pharmaceutical on behalf of the Federal Government under the False Claims Act, achieving a guilty plea and fines and rebates of almost $1 billion to the Treasury. 2 years ago he served as a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University related to his experience in the Tufts positions.
Dr. Gerstein has personally facilitated over 3000 SMART Recovery meetings, almost 800 in prisons.
Dr. Gerstein and his wife received the American Humanist Association's Humanist Pioneers Award for their work in SMART Recovery and Dr. Gerstein was recently named Harvard Humanist of the Year

Host Monica Richardson is back after a break. When did this all begin. AA meetings first started in Prison in 1941. Drug Court Began in 1989 in FLorida and 1990 in California.
But many violent and sex offenders had been court ordered as far back as in the 1970's documented in Monica's film The 13th Step. Some sex offenders don't even drink, for obvious reasons. So why would a Judge send them there?

IN 1975 when I first encountered AA, most poeple tried to tell me, AA was more of a "take what you like and leave the rest" kinda thing. What a bait and switch racket they had going on. In fact when I think back, many of the successful oldtimers, with rattling coins in their pockets and Cadillacs in the parking lots gave us that impression. Even those who were poor seemed to have something at stake to make me stay as an 18 or 21 year old...the years I doubted I belonged. But once they 13 stepped me, broke me down with their arm chair pop pschology and said I was hooked, they swiftly gave me positions that no 20 year old with 2 years of sobriety should have been given. I was DCM for Honolulu then, and then they made me PI for the State, sending me off to Lawyers Conferences to attract lawyers to AA...wow ...The facts are, AA's literature is filled with 500 or more crazy references to GOD sugar coated with higher power phrases and wacky "you must or you'll DIE!!!" Listen as we tear up and make fun of an entrenced monolithic sneaky baby cult, pretending to be a "fellowship".

Lance Dodes, M.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst Emeritus with the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and was assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School (retired). He has been the Director of the substance abuse treatment unit of Harvard’s McLean Hospital, Director of the Alcoholism Treatment Unit at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital (now part of Massachusetts General Hospital) and Director of the Boston Center for Problem Gambling. He annually chairs the discussion group The Patient witih Addiction in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis at the fall meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
I attended AA for 36 years. Abstinent. After I worked the steps in and out 3 times in a row ( over the years I did them over again as well) I found myself lacking and seeing "the steps" for what they were. Pretty useless and in many ways harmfull for a young teen like myself who was already good at blaming myself. At 4 years sober and 22 years old I began my quest for real help and answers. At first I read books like The Greatest Secret in the World by Og Mandino, then I began doing outside spitiual healings which did help. I excercised regularly and I searched for truth. Still I suffered with great emotional pain that no one in AA had any answers for and in fact made me feel worse at times. I will share and discuss the many paths, books, theraputic means I took that finaly got me to a place where I realized I had childhood trauma, I got help from a real PhD, I did rage work and then found out that I was NEVER BROKEN. Two shorts years after studing TM or Quantum Mediation, I left AA never to return and now know for myself that AA is a very dangerous , unhealthy, toxic, unsafe, religious type cultish thing. I am not calling it a "program or a fellowship or a support group" my expereince is proof that AA is very close to all the terms that would say it is a "cult"!

Along with the success of being a chapter in Gabrielle Glaser's book Her Best Kept Secret, Why Women Drink and How They Can Regain Control, being on Katie Couric this summer, raising the money on indie gogo so I could continue making the film with a more professional look, connecting with Producer Michael Kuehnert who has greatly helped me continue making the film, then being accepted by the IDA to be my fiscal sponsor so I can raise funds in a nonprofit way, hiring a great editor, Barry Rubinow to make the new 7.5 min trailer and see the final pieces of the puzzle coming together to finish and release the film sometime this coming 2014.
It will be my last show of the year to talk about all I learned this year including who I will promote as my favorite authors and favorite for profit Addiction treatment programs.

Many members have been taken for thousnads of dollars and never go to the police...why? Why do these people think AA members get of scott free?
Robert Warner won the landmark case but nothing changed. Judges and lawyers are still ordering people to AA.

SO why all the free propganda in some new big films like FLIGHT with Denzel Washington and SMASHED a small idie film? Is it possible that these actors, film makers and writers have no idea SMART and SOS and Moderation, Harm Reduction, Amy Lee Coys way, Hank Hayes with On Track and Beyond and Drink Link Moderation exist? Sadly to say, I didn't know they existed until 2009. If you know a young person who dislikes AA or NA and wants to quit illegal drugs but wants to have a beer once in a while and not be abstinent the rest of their lives, you should join us for this show. One of my early shows with Kali who was badly 13 stepped at The Marina Center in Culver City, CA. Kali and Monica discuss the problems with AA speak and the constant mumbo jumbo blaming of "What's your part in it " nonsense. Although a small womens meeting took this issue head on with alot of integrity most AA in West Los Angeles seem to rather blame the victim then confront the predator. Ryan was 25. He lost his sister Sarah from Suicide last fall and I met him on the www.stinkin-thinkin.com site. The threads are still there. Ryan and I became friends. I connected as a mom and as a freind. He told me about how angry he was after spending 2 years at an all 12 step treatment center that didnt help him at all with his mental and emotional issues. Lots of phone converstions and emails and reading Ryan's posts as well as what he wrote on his own blog steppin on suicide. How many more people does AA/NA kill with suicide. I know many more. I will finish up from last week my discussion on how viable AA's 12 Traditions are today compared to when they were written in 1945. Has the world changed since then? Has AA changed since then? "No opinion on Outside issues" have you heard this phrase and thought.."that sounds like an excuse". That it is being taken out of context. I know women who were grabbed inside a meeting? Its okay for Bill Wilson to be in the press, have movies made about himself to promote AA after he is dead, and he even went to Washington to testify in front of the senate to promote AA. If no one is responsible or in charge why are they paying themsleves 400k a year to run the big fancy office in NYC on Riverside Drive? How do priests really feel about AA? The 9th Circut Court of Appeal has deemed AA too religious in many states including California. So why does someone get sent 50 AA meetings by a Judge in 2012? Is he breaking the law? I recently heard an interview on Tavis Smiley on PBS with A Peace Leader from Liberia, Leymah Gbowee who wrote the book MIGHTY BE OUR POWERS talk about how they affected change in a Country with men walking around with AK47's . So why in the USA, can't women feel safe and be safe in 12 step meetings? Maybe AA is set up in such a way that predators know that No one is going to speak up. Why? What are they afraid of. Why are they so timid. Have they no courage and no voice like these African Woman who have changed their country once War ravaged where they too were once rendered powerless. They are empowered. They are peaceful and they are strong. I wish I could find a community of woman who are like these African Woman. Fearless. Empowered. Smart. Courageous. Many of us feel that 1936 rhetoric is way over rated. Some big rehabs like Betty Ford use this to help clients recover. Paying all that money to be told faith healing wil help them stop drinking. In a small town near Daytona Beach, Florida is a park (Holly Hill) where NA and AA meetings have been meeting for over 17 years. Recently a group of local concerned citizens near the park has had their lives threatened numerous times by numerous AA/NA member. Police were called, City Council meetings were held, neighbors signed petitions, newspapers reporters wrote stories and NA World Services /AA World Services were called to address this threatening behavior. What role does each World service hold with regards to responsibility of members and meetings. Why do these members feel entitled to take this park hostage as "theirs" A controversial look at a serious problem dealing with both sober/clean addicts & alcoholics. Where is their spiritual practice? Are they paying rent for the pavilion like the local residents do? Harriet will join us to share what she is doing to raise awareness and to protect minors.
