this week, jackie is going to dive in deep to the most well cited (and well evidenced) tools known to manifestation - affirmations! strap in because we will be getting into the nitty-gritty of why affirmations are so effective and how the simple mastering of affirmations can influence positive change in your entire life.

your up-level to do list:

  • make a list of 5 behaviors you want to change
  • evaluate each behavior and ask yourself “where does this behavior come from? how do i feel before and after i engage in this behavior? what do i tell myself before engaging in this behavior?”
  • write a new affirmation for each of the behavior:
    • eg, “i eat junk food everyday” → “i deserve to feel and be healthy because i deserve the benefits of a healthy lifestyle (energy, stamina, etc.)”
  • repeat the affirmation once in the morning and to yourself every time you get an urge to act out the negative behavior

reading list:

  • "the psychology of self-affirmation: sustaining the identity of the self"  (CM Steele, 1988)
  • self-affirmation activates brain systems associated with self-related processing and reward and is reinforced by future orientation (Cascio, 2016)

microhabits are the daily actions you take to propel you in the direction your higher aligned self. think of these as daily non-negotiables - they are small, minimally time invasive habits that you commit yourself to on a daily basis.

forming microhabits is imperative to forming the version of you we talked about in episode 01. to become her, your actions and behaviors must align with her identity.

in this podcast episode, jaclyn will take you through various ways you can enact microhabits into your daily life and embrace the magnitude these habits will have on your identity long term.

post-episode activities:

choose 5 of the 6 wheel of life areas (mental, physical, financial, relationship, social, and spiritual) and write out one microhabit for each area.

download a habit tracker app, print out a habit tracker, or draw one out yourself (see “The X Effect”). track your habit each day you complete it.

write out a contract to yourself - “i, (your name), will commit myself to (your microhabit) because (how this habit helps you become the person you envision yourself to be).”

last week we focused on identifying our future self and inventorying (is that a word?) our present selves. in today's episode, our 2nd of the glow up series, we will be focusing on identifying and aligning our present with our past. to do so, we will be visualizing and meeting our inner child!

what is your inner child? your inner child is a psychological concept that addresses all the things we learned in our first several years of life - think of her as your survival instinct.

blocks for the inner child that manifest in adulthood:
by no means a one size fit all block. there may be others you learn to recognize, but here's a starting point for identifying manifestations of our hurt inner child:

  • staying in toxic relationships well past the expiration date due to a false sense of safety
  • inappropriate behaviors and actions we learn to model in childhood
  • gaslighting ourselves as adults because we were not nurtured appropriately in childhood
  • attachment styles - anxious, avoidant, secure relationships
  • acting in a way that is how you are told to act, not how you want to act

let's meet your inner child. perform this visualization technique and write out anything after that comes to you:

release: breath in (8sec), hold (4 sec), slowly release your breath (8 sec). repeat three times total***now that we have released the emotional energy priming our thoughts this morning/evening - let’s close our eyes and just take in the moment to visualize.

begin to picture a place you had in childhood that was safe for you. maybe it was your room, or a favorite park - just imagine walking into the entrance of whatever this place is. as you take in the scenery - which is composed of all your favorite things from childhood - you notice a small child. you observe her, taking note of what she looks like, what she is wearing, what she is doing, how old she appears. you watch her for some time and then you go to greet her. you say “hello, my name is (your name), what’s yours?”. take note of her response. does she tell you her name? does she share with you the things that bring her joy? or does she cower? look down and not answer the question?

this is your inner child.

at the appropriate time, say your goodbyes and leave this place. send your inner child energy that she may feel as protected as you once did in this space.***

nurturing your inner child:

  • develop patience
  • evaluate your relationships - are the 5 people you spend the most time with safe for her?
  • pretend you are talking to her - when you find yourself speaking negatively, envision that you are saying the same things to your inner child. is that how you want to speak to her?

how to protect your inner child

  • consider the questions you answered about what was serving you from the first podcast as ways of protecting your inner child
  • take note anytime something “doesn’t feel right” - this is your intuition trying to protect your inner child
  • start to distance yourself from the people who are not safe for your inner child

moving forward, i want you to evaluate your actions & experiences through the lens of your inner child. think to yourself - is this (relationship, action, behavior) nurturing my inner child? is it harming her? does it pose a threat to her physical, mental, and emotional safety? how can i bring her back to safety?

the first episode of the podcast and we're starting things off with a point. join me on the 10 week "glow up series", where we'll be dissecting all the bs that's getting in the way of you becoming the most aligned, most beautiful version of you.

episode 01 is all about taking inventory of the now so we can really delve into the person we want to become. we break this down into three steps:

step 01. give voice to the you you are becoming - not the person you are nowuse the 3rd person to right out who you will become. start with "(your name) is" and see where it leads! save this to your phone notes or on a sticky note near a mirror and repeat it to yourself at least once a day

step 02. set your intentions for your wheel of lifethe wheel of life is broken down to 6 core "healths". these are:

  • mental health
  • physical health
  • social health
  • spiritual health
  • relationship health
  • financial health

address each by writing out intentions that come from a place of love, not lack. use "because i deserve" statements (ex. i will go to therapy because i deserve to be happy). write one out for each of the above healths.

step 03. inventory what is serving youspend the next 7 days evaluating each part of your wheel. answer the following questions and any others that may come up:

  • Mental health - is this something (your name) would think of herself? how can we rewrite this thought to be helpful?
  • Physical health - is this something (your name) would eat?
  • Spiritual health - what is one thing spiritually (your name) would do daily?
  • Financial health - is this a purchase (your name) would make?
  • Social health - is this the way (your name) would treat her barista? her daughters’ teachers?
  • Relationship health - is this the kind of relationship that (your name) would put effort into?

taking inventory of the space between your current life and where you want to be is the first step of making major, life changing moves and bringing your life into perfect alignment.
