Our third Birdsville Races podcast of 2023 focuses on jockey John Keating and his pursuit of Birdsville Cup glory. In the first half, recorded in October 2022, the 51-year-old Bendigo, based jockey chats about his racing experiences at last years' two-day meeting where he finished 2nd again in the Birdsville Cup. The historic race remains on the bucket list for the jockey who began his career in 1988 and has ridden nearly 800 winners. On a lighter the jockey adds the story of his son Henry’s four-wheel drive vehicle which blew a gearbox close to John’s arrival in Birdsville. In the second half John I spoke to John ahead of his departure to Betoota for the opening leg of this year's Simpson Desert Racing carnival. John compares the three legs of the series, Betoota, Birdsville and Bedourie. In 2022 John came 2nd in all three of the major cup races. John gives his thought about this year’s meeting at Birdsville, especially the cup which he dreams of adding to his mantelpiece at home in Bendigo. Transport wise this year John is driving his younger son Daniel’s vehicle. The good news is that John has made it to Birdsville without any issues. As Birdsville Races Vice President Gary Brook said in Episode 218 “it’s probably the biggest car rally in the world”. One of those on his way to Birdsville 2023 is 93-year-old Bob Potts, known as Pottsy, who is travelling 900 miles to see the Birdsville Cup with his son Reggie and daughter Lyn. Last year Pottsy reached Betoota races but became unwell on race day and had to be airlifted out by the Royal Flying Doctors. After a few days in hospital Pottsy was back home feeling much better, plus he was soon making plans to go to Birdsville races in 2023. In this podcast, part 2 of our Birdville races 2023 series Reggie and Pottsy talk about their plans for the epic journey to the Queensland outback, Pottsy in his turbo charged mobility scooter. The Potts team, who are part of the Birdsville Roadies have now made it to Birdsville ahead of Friday’s races, where Potsy hopes to back the winner. In many people eyes he is already a winner.

In the first of four podcasts celebrating Birdsville Races 2023 I was joined by Birdsville Races Vice President Gary Brook, who previously featured in Ep 148 – The Birdsville Cup – The Melbourne Cup of the outback. The podcast in two halves begins with an interview in late October 2022 after last year’s meeting, which was severely affected by torrential rain. Gary explains how he and his team managed the monumental task of keeping the two-day meeting on. Although the original opening day was postponed and moved forward to the next day all the races were complete before the sun set on Sunday at the iconic venue. 2nd Half A few grey hairs later Gary recently joined me ahead of Birdsville 2023 to update us on this year’s two-day meeting which is due to start on Friday 1 September with the Birdsville Cup set for Saturday 2 September. With many road closures in 2022 due to the weather Gary is hoping for a larger crowd this year and bigger field sizes. Plus, Gary explained to me what the Birdsville Races Roadies means. In part 2 coming up in our next podcast you will be hearing from some of those Roadies, 93-year-old Bob Potts, known as Pottsy, and his son and daughter Reggie and Lyn, who are currently on their 900-mile journey to the races.

In the 2nd part of our Silver Ashes series, I spoke to a delighted England over 70s Captain John Evans following the team’s victory by 91 runs in the 2nd ODI on Sunday at Wellington cricket club. The victory meant that England retained the Ashes. John, who was in the runs again, talked through the action in Shropshire which did have it ups and downs before England secured a comfortable win. Joining us on the podcast is the Australian wicket keeper Murray Harrison who added a match perspective from the visiting camp. A former Australian over 60s international Murray also gave us an insight into touring England and Wales. England 236/8 (50) Australia 149 all out (42.3). We have had the Men’s and Women’s Ashes and the Men’s over 60s Ashes but now it’s the time for the Men’s over 70s Ashes, known as the Silver Ashes. England holders of the Ashes after winning down under during the winter began a three match ODI series at Castle Park, Colchester last Sunday. Joining me at short notice for the first of three podcasts covering the three internationals is the England captain and Sunday’s match winner John Evans. You will also hear from Nick Andrews (Cambs & Hunts CCC) our guest in Ep 1888 when we covered the tour down under, who made a useful contribution with the bat. England captain Heather Knight described the Women’s Ashes as the best women’s series in the history of women’s cricket. And in the first of our three podcasts on the Ashes 2023 I was joined by former England Test centurion Kathryn Leng and German international all-rounder Tina Gough to review all the action during this exciting multi format women’s’ Ashes. All-rounder Naomi Dattani is all set for the 3rd edition of ‘The Hundred’ which begins on 1 August with the Trent Rockets playing against the Southern Brave at Trent Bridge. Naomi moved to the Tent Bridge franchise in the hundred draft from the London Spirit a few months ago. In this podcast Naomi talks about her move to the midlands side and how much she is looking forward to the tournament which has helped transform the women’s game in Great Britain. Naomi now 29 is used to moving during her career, both domestically, this year she moved from the Sunrisers to the Thunder, and internationally, where she has played two winters of club cricket in Australia. Naomi discusses how the moves have helped develop her cricket career both on and off the field. Her career began when she joined a boy’s side at ten years of age. By 14 she was playing for the Middlesex women 1st XI. In 2020 Naomi was awarded a professional contract Naomi reveals the challenges she has encountered as a British South Asian during her cricketing career which she believes is now opening to more South Asians. After a thrilling 2023 Women’s Ashes series on today’s show, I want to take you back to the first glory days of Test cricket, the 1930s where it all started, through the words of Australian journalist, academic, author and podcaster Nick Richardson. Nick reviews the opening test matches between England and Australia in 1934/35 and 1937 through the characters who shaped those early matches, the class differences between the two sides and the reasons why women’s cricket was so popular at that time. Bringing the podcast up to the modern-day Nick explains how the Women’s’ Ashes trophy was created in 1998 and highlights the major developments within the women’s game in the 21st century.

The first International cricket match between the USA and Canada was played in 1844. On Thursday 14 July 2023 Major League Cricket, a new exciting T20 Franchise tournament is due to blast off at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. 6 teams, 19 games over 18 days will begin with the Texas Super Kings v Los Angeles Knight Riders. In the first episode the famous Australian jockey gives his views on the recent Royal Ascot meeting, a festival where he enjoyed success during the 1960s and 70s. Ron discusses his famous win in the 1974 Ascot Gold Cup on Ragstone for his regular owner the Duke of Norfolk as well as a lovely story about his Ascot suit. In the final part of our ‘Memories of The Ashes series I was joined by former England Test centurion Kathryn Leng, who played four Ashes Test matches against Australia between 1998 and 2003. Young Rosa Simkin of ‘Rosa Talks Ball’ joins the show as my co-host. Kathryn a regular on The Paddock and The Pavilion talks passionately about Test cricket against the arch enemy which for her began at Guildford on 6 August 1998 in a high scoring draw where the Aussies scored 569/6. England’s tally of 414 was until the recent Test Match England’s highest score at Ashes level. Catch Kathryn’s memories of both a home and away Ashes series where she opened with a young Charlotte Edwards and came up against some of the legends of Australian cricket, Cathryn Fitzpatrick, Belinda Clark and Lisa Keightley. The Ellen Chaloner Stakes listed fillies’ race was a historic day for Newmarket on Saturday 6 May. The Paddock and the Pavilion has been closely associated with the Chaloner family’s campaign to get Ellen Chaloner, the first woman trainer, recognised in the racing world and this show looks back at the race named after ‘the Trailblazing Trainer’. Great granddaughter Susie Wilks gives a personal account of the historic day at the Rowley Mile racecourse with guest appearances from her cousins Marietta Krikhaar and Tom Chaloner, and Joe Rendall from the Jockey Club. The inaugural Ellen Chaloner Stakes over six furlongs was won by Azure Blue trained by Michael Dods and ridder by Paul Mulrennan. In a quirk of fate Susie met Ann Elliott a part owner of the winner on her chaotic train journey from Scotland. Ann adds her reaction to winning the race with the 4-year-old filly in the driving rain on Guineas Day. I spoke to Gay Kelleway, who in 1987 became the first woman jockey to ride a winner at Royal Ascot. Gay reflects on her historic win on Sprowston Boy, trained by her father Paul, in the Queen Alexandra Stakes by eight lengths at the Royal meeting. Gay a 23-year-old apprentice jockey at the time beat legendary jockeys Willie Carson, Steve Cauthen and Pat Eddery in the 2m 6f race. In the third part of our three part ‘Memories of The Ashes series I was joined by former England swing bowler of the 1980s Richard Ellison. Richard only played two Ashes Test matches, both in 1985, but few players have ever made a bigger impact. Player of the Match in his Ashes debut at Edgbaston, Richard took 17 wickets in his two Test matches to help England win the Ashes. Capture the magic of his debut when Richard ripped through the Aussie batting line up. “I had 15 minutes in the sunshine,” said Richard. Richard ended the podcast with an insightful look ahead to the 2023 series which is due to start on the 16 June at Edgbaston, the scene of Richard’s greatest Ashes memory. In the second part of our three part ‘Memories of The Ashes series I was joined by former England opening batter of the 1960s and 70s Dennis Amiss. Dennis’s ‘Memories of The Ashes’ went back to watching his hero Denis Compton winning the Ashes on television in 1953. His Ashes career began and ended at Old Trafford (1968-1977). In his opening Ashes Test in 1968 he bagged a pair and Dennis talks philosophically about the troubles he experienced against Australia, who proved to be his nemesis during his Test career. After 1968 his next Ashes Test came in the winter of 1974/75 where the England batter and Dennis took a battering as they suffered a 4-1 series thrashing. We hear what it was like to face the fearsome duo of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson on some fast bouncy wickets. Dennis continued to play for England in the home series against the Aussies in 1975 and 1977. The podcast ended with Dennis’s views on the much-anticipated 2023 Ashes series which will begin at his adopted home, Edgbaston on 16 June.

In the first part of our three part ‘Memories of The Ashes series I was joined by former Australian opening batsman of the 1970s Rick McCosker. Rick a previous guest on the podcast recalled his Ashes memories which went back to playing imaginary Test matches in the back garden with his brother and listening to the wireless on cold winter’s nights with his parents in the 1950s. Rick’s Ashes journey included series wins in 1974/75 and 1975, but disappointment in 1977. You will hear about his debut at Sydney in January 1975 in that dramatic series where England took a pummeling from Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson together with his views on the captaincy credentials of brothers Ian and Greg Chappell, and much more from this modest but successful opening batsman of the 1970s. I spoke to former Australian opening batsman Rick McCosker, one of the first batch of 35 players who were signed up by Australian media tycoon Kerry Packer to play World Series Cricket in direct competition to established international cricket. Rick explains in detail the reasons why he signed up to Kerry Packer’s new cricketing organisation and what it was like to play World Series Cricket. “It was very exciting and it was wonderful to be part of something as big as this and something new. But it was tough We were playing against the best in the world”, said Rick. World Series Cricket continued for two Australian summers and a Caribbean tour, between February and April 1979, before a truce was made with the Australian Cricket Board on 30 May 1979. Bullet Train is an often forgotten horse, but 10 years ago the colt played a key role, as the lead horse, in the mighty Frankel’s last race win in the Champion Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot. Ian Mongan, the jockey of Bullet Train reflects on one of the most historic races of the 21st century, certainly one of the most anticipated. Mongan talks fondly about Frankel’s pacemaker, Bullet Train, a Group 3 winner in his classic year, who ran in the 2010 Derby. The jockey explains Bullet Train’s key role in the Frankel story which began at the end of the 2011 season. Bullet Train a three parts brother to Frankel played the part of lead horse in the wonder horse’s last six Group 1 victories. Mongan talks with affection about his trainer Sir Henry Cecil, whose careful handling of Frankel, helped the colt remain unbeaten in his fourteen races Both colts are now at stud, Frankel at Banstead Manor stud near Newmarket while Bullet Train is based at Woodfield Farm stud in Ireland.

Mum of two, Stephanie Jardeback had not ridden a winner since 2002 in Malmo so it had been a long wait when she and the 9 year old gelding Billy Roberts crossed the finishing line first at Haydock on August 4th in an amateur race. A race she very nearly missed!
Stephanie’s story goes back to riding a pony in Sweden, working for a stable as a teenager whilst at University , moving to work in Chantilly, and Ireland with John Oxx, where she rode work alongside Johnny Murtagh and Mick Kinane. After working for the Group 1 winning trainer Stephanie transferred to Darley’s Kildangan stud followed by two years in England with Oaks winning trainer Henry Candy before she went back home to Sweden to have a family.
But Stephanie was not finished with horse racing, the urge to ride horses was still there. Returning to the UK in 2015 she got the racing bug again watching the sport on television and via social media. In 2019 she got a job riding out for leading northern trainer Richard Fahey ahead of her current destination at Simon Whitaker’s stable just outside Leeds.
Enjoy Stephanie’s trips around the world, there was even a time in Greece, in the sport she loves with a touch of dog boarding, translation work and of course the school runs to keep her busy.

Sean Magee a personal friend of Lester Piggott and author of Lester’s Derbys gives a heartfelt tribute to the legendary jockey who passed away on Sunday 29 May. Sean who interviewed Lester on many occasions gives his insight into his character which made him one of the most iconic sportsmen of the 20th century. From his first win aged 12 in August 1948 on The Chase, his nine Derby’s, to his sensational comeback on Royal Academy at the Breeders’ Cup in 1990 Sean reveals what made Lester special. Lifelong friend Frank Conlon, who worked with him at Henry Cecil’s Warren Place stables in the early 1980 adds his own personal thoughts about Lester.
What was it like to….. train for The Queen? In Episode 4 where I pose the question ‘What was it like to…. I spoke to Neil Graham, who took over the licence to train for The Queen in late August 1988 when Derby winning trainer Dick Hern became seriously ill. Neil looks back at his time working for The Queen at her West Ilsley stables in Berkshire. Neil experienced first-hand The Queen’s love of her horses and her keen interest in the horse racing industry. In addition to training hoses for The Queen at West Ilsley Neil also trained the winners of other leading races including Lady Beaverbrook's Minster Son, who won the St Leger in September 1988.

Joseph recalls his victories on Camelot in 2012 and Australia in 2014.
When winning on Camelot as a nineteen-year-old for his father Aidan he became part of the first father and son combination to win the most prestigious race in thoroughbred racing. The historic race was first run at Epsom in 1780.

In our third episode with Gay Kelleway, the Exning based trainer gives an update on her incredible Just Giving campaign to #savehorsesinukraine. Gay has now made further trips to the Polish/Ukraine border, a journey of 2,800 miles and in this podcast she praises the racing industry’s support and the challenges her small team are facing regarding logistics and planning. In this 125th edition of ‘The Paddock and The Pavilion’ I had the pleasure to speak to Jaydon Lee a young man doing his dream job. 20-year-old Jaydon is the lucky work rider who looks after two of the biggest stars in National Hunt Racing, Shishkin and Constitution Hill at Nicky Henderson’s Seven Barrows yard in Lambourn. I asked Jaydon about his racing life, which began watching the sport on the televisions with his grandad, graduating at the British Racing School before he moved to work at Seven Barrows.

On 30 April 2011 Frankel won the 2000 guineas at Newmarket. In one of the most astonishing races in the history of the turf Frankel won the famous Classic by 6 lengths. Newmarket is the home of horse racing but one club making giant strides in a different sport in the Suffolk town is Newmarket Cricket club. Last season, The Stampede, as they are known, achieved promotion to the Cambs and Hunts Division 1 only a year after being reformed. In this episode I caught up with two of their players, leading bowler Freddie Statham and new Aussie recruit Connor Hotham. The pair discuss their personal and team hopes for the season. Freddie updates us on the work the club has been doing during the close season while Connor talks about his day job riding out for trainer David Simcock. He also adds a few horses to follow for the flat season ahead.

Former England Test player Roland Butcher returns to give his opinions on Red Ball misery for England in the Caribbean. Sean Magee a leading Racing historian and author of Arkle, The Story of the World’s Greatest Steeplechaser analyses the 1964 Cheltenham Gold Cup clash between Arkle and Mill House. Arkle, the then pretender taking on the reigning champion Mill House. This special podcast is about a campaign to win recognition for one of horse racing’s unique and forgotten pioneers. Ellen Chaloner fought against high odds to become the first woman in Britain to be given a permit by the Jockey Club to train horses in 1886. She did so from her Newmarket stables, from where after only a year training she won a race at Royal Ascot. On her retirement she remained a regular racegoer in the Suffolk town until well into her nineties. She died in 1944 at the age of 98 and now lies in an unmarked grave in a cemetery opposite the Rowley Mile racecourse in the town.
During the podcast I spoke to Ellen’s Great granddaughters Marietta Krikhaar, Susie Wilks and great great grandson Charlie Swan, the former nine time Irish champion jump jockey. I also consulted racing historians Dr Esther Harper and Tim Cox and sought the views of 21st century trainers Lucinda Russell and Gay Kelleway.
A remarkable lady, born into a racing family who deserves to be recognised for her part in the history of horse racing.

With England due to visit the Caribbean next month for a three Test series, to get you in the mood I spoke to author Colin Babb about his book, 1973 and me. The book covered the West Indies successful 1973 tour of England, but is so much more than cricket, which is just the spine. Colin reflects on the politics of the time, Britain joined he Common Market in that year, his favourite football team Leeds Utd surprisingly lost in one of the most dramatic FA Cup Finals of all time, and the culture of watching television during that era, the key ingredient to a young boy connecting with the game of cricket. Colin reveals the connection the Caribbean community had with the 1973 touring side led by Rohan Kanhai, a series which began a regeneration of West Indian cricket. Six years ago Gavin Ashton was working as a chef in a North West pub. Watching the racing one afternoon at the Elephant and Castle in Bamford a friend suggested Gavin was the right size to be a jockey, a comment which triggered a new career for the 19 year old who had been on an academy course with Manchester City and dreamed of being a professional footballer. This week’s podcast covers Gavin’s incredible story from joining the British Racing School in Newmarket, despite having never sat on horse before, working as an apprentice with the legendary Sir Mark Prescott, Shaun Keightley, Ian Williams and since late 2020 with Classic winning trainer Roger Varian. In 2021 Gavin tasted success riding eleven winners in Germany where he so nearly won a listed race in Hannover.

This year's Grand National was a family affair for the Worsley family. Tabitha rode Sub Lieutenant a horse trained by her mum Georgie Howell. whilst her brother and sister in law led up the horse in the parade ring. In this episode Tabitha talks about her day at Aintree riding the former Grade 2 winning chaser to 14th place, in the race where Rachael Blackmore made history becoming the first female to ride the winner of the world famous race on Minella Times. In the first part of a two part podcast I had the delight to talk to Geoff Miller, the former England cricketer and Chairman of selectors. From listening to the Ashes on the radio at home with his Dad in January 1959 Geoff went on to fulfill his father’s dream of representing his country down under in the late 1970s. Geoff recalls his Test Debut against the mighty West Indies in 1976, success against Australia, his 98 not out in a Test match against Pakistan and special day for Derbyshire in the 1981 NatWest Trophy Final. After retiring from cricket in 1990 Geoff began a new career as a popular after dinner speaker. Part 2 to be released on Tuesday 24 August will feature Geoff’s time as an England cricket selector.

Michael Holding, the Legendary West Indian fast bowler of the 1970s and 1980s is back with part 2 discussing his three Test match tours of England. Michael talks about the social impact on the lives of West Indians people as the team of Clive Lloyd Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Andy Roberts, Joel Garner and himself to name just a few crushed England in 1976, 1980 and the blackwash series of 1984. “ Every time the West Indies won you could see the Caribbean faces of the people living in England, it lit up their faces” he said. Classic winning jockey John Gorton chats about his globetrotting days as a jockey and a trainer. In a career spanning over 50 years John’s story begins in his native South Africa where he rode his first winner in 1962 before he moved to Newmarket in 1969, the year he won the Oaks on Sleeping Partner for Lord Rosebery. John went on to win races at Royal Ascot, the Goodwood Cup, Lancashire Oaks and the Falmouth and Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. John later successfully trained horses in South Africa, Australia and China. He is now the Director of Racing at the Royal Sabah Turf Club in Borneo.

Newmarket trainer and Sky Sports presenter John Berry gives a heartfelt tribute to Roy Rocket, the Brighton Racecourse legend who died suddenly on the gallops of a heart attack on 9 April.
Roy won his first race at Brighton in April 2015 and went on to win 9 times at the Sussex track. and become a fans favourite In December 2018 Roy, the popular grey went on to win the Racehorse Owners Association special acheivement award.
