"When I started law school in 2010 and landed my first job at a men’s outfitter, I browsed through street style photography for inspiration. Through Tommy Ton’s blog Jak & Jil I came across Milan Vukmirovic and his magazine Fashion For Men. Since I felt like men’s fashion was often treated as second class, this magazine was a complete revelation to me. Until today, I have almost every issue.
So, I’m very happy to have Milan on The Wasted Hour Podcast and to share our conversation from September with you. We talked about the last fashion piece he bought, the legendary Paris concept store Colette, working as a designer at Gucci and Jil Sander, shooting his first photos under a fake name and, of course, Fashion For Men.

"For years I always wanted to shoot pictures, but never got to the point of buying a camera and starting to do so.
That changed around 2011 - 2012 when I discovered photographs on Instagram that looked exactly like the ideal that I had always wanted to capture. The photos were shot by Tag Christof.
His transported mood, the colours and the compositions triggered something in me: The urge to create something.

After his VIEW series in January I’m honoured to have him on The Wasted Hour Podcast.

We talked about his first post on Instagram, industrial design, the moment he realized he wanted to be an architect, his road trips through America and of course photography.“

"Phoebe English founded her label in 2011. The brand's dual roots of sustainability and craftsmanship are crucial to each collection, and Phoebe has actively pursued change within the fashion world in order to improve sustainability within the industry.
Certified materials that are free from harmful chemicals, the repurposing of deadstock fabrics, recyclable, biodegradable or home compostable packaging, buttons made from palm nuts and milk protein to avoid unnecessary plastic or natural dyes are just a few examples of how her pieces are produced.

With the launch of her Nothing New collection at The Wasted Hour (a collection made entirely from reclaimed materials sourced from designers and studios across London) we talked about her favorite actress, her creative family, her first internship with a couturier in Paris, her studies at Central Saint Martins, how she founded her label in 2011, her commitment to sustainability and much more.

Sustainability has become an omnipresent word in fashion. It can be a word that’s open to interpretation, but it’s safe to say that Bethany Williams, a fashion designer based in London, takes it to the next level. Not only does she support various charitable causes each season, donating a percentage of her profits, but Bethany and her team are also working together with charity services to develop new materials and fabrics.

When we first met in Paris in January, I was amazed not only by the beautiful collection, but also by the stories behind each garment. Recycled toy waste, old bell tents and recycled blankets have been given a new purpose.

For the launch of Bethany‘s AW20 collection at The Wasted Hour and our second podcast season, we talked about her background, how she was laughed at when she first presented her ideas, her first collaboration with Tesco (a multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer), how she’s doing her research for social causes, her upcoming projects with Adidas and much more

Nowadays it’s so easy to find good music, as there are so many good live sets or mixes on Soundcloud or other streaming platforms.
Stil, (or perhaps precisely because of that), finding songs or even artists that trigger something special in me is rare.

So I remember the moment vividly: One moment I was absently looking out the train window, then this one song came on and I was intensely scrolling through the comments to see some had already posted the setlist.
Luckily someone already did, and that’s how I discovered Roza Terenzi.
A few days later YouTube recommended me her “Live set at the Boiler Room”, and looking back on 2019, it’s one my favourite sets of this year.
By the time I had discovered her, she was already a household name on the Melbourne scene, had toured through Europe for five months, and had released several great records. During my time in Melbourne I was happy to spend an afternoon with her to talk about her beginnings, how her dad showed her how to use logic and record something, the scene in Melbourne, and touring around the world in five months. -Martin

Sleep D and their label Butter Sessions are one of the main pillars of the current electronic scene in Melbourne.
In contrast to other producers and DJs coming from this beautiful city in Australia, Corey and Maryos didn’t leave town to settle in Europe. From the beginning they built their tight-knit network, at first through a forum and later through their label.

They met with The Wasted Hour editor in-chief Martin at their studio in Carlston to talk about growing up in Frankston and going to underage clubs, forming Sleep D and their label Butter Sessions, the whole DIY approach and of course their new album, Rebel Force.

Have you ever ditched the scheduled program of a school or university trip and decided to wander off with someone and explore your own?
That’s basically how Ben and Matthew, the founders and designers of Cottweiler met.

They were both enrolled in a Fashion Design course at the University of Bristol, but it wasn’t on an excursion to the capital of France that they bonded over their similar taste in music and the general feeling of not wanting to follow anyone else’s rules.

A few years later they founded Cottweiler.
Before that, Ben was working on Saville Row, a street in central London that’s known for its traditional bespoke tailoring for men.
Matthew was working with Kim Jones and was also doing a lot of consulting for different sportswear brands.

Fuelled by their experience, they created a brand that combines sportswear and tailoring in a brilliant and convincing way.

In May they met with The Wasted Hour editor-in-chief Martin to talk about that trip to Paris, combining sportswear and tailoring, winning the Woolmark Prize in 2017, the best party stories, and of course about their collection ’The lost art of cruising’ .

I was introduced to the world of Yang Li a few years ago through an article on the StyleZeitGeist forum.
It felt like the first time I had come across a person who I didn’t know personally and who had grown up in a total different environment and was sharing the same influences and interests and was furthermore able to integrate them skilfully into his collections.

So it’s no big secret that when I started The Wasted Hour, he was at the top of the list of labels I wanted to carry.

With the introduction of his collection to our shop, I was happy to meet him the day after his fashion show in Paris.
On the bench in front of his showroom we talked about the influence of skateboarding, studying at Central Saint Martins, dropping out, being an intern at Raf Simons, and of course music.

Thank you Yang, for being part of The Wasted Hour.

One of the best parts of going out is discovering new music. A DJ you’ve never seen before is playing records that you’ve you never heard, and sparks this sensational feeling: this is something we chase all the time. Back home, you Google his name then dive into the DJ’s catalogue and explore a whole new world of records and references.

That’s what happened a while ago, when I heard Nathan Micay play at Berghain’s Panorama Bar. In his set, he sprinkled in catchy, almost cheesy melodies that made me dance and smile (the same for the major part of the dance floor too).

Nathan and editor-in-chief Martin met at his apartment in Berlin and talked about his beginnings, playing support for Skrillex, living a healthy lifestyle, being a personal trainer for his DJ colleagues, moving to Berlin and of course, his latest releases.

JaJa Kisses makes music that leaves you feeling sexy, vulnerable, good and full of longing. For our interview we spent an afternoon in London, the city where she was born and raised, to talk about her hair, smoking weed, Destiny’s Child and, of course, her music.

Some albums come to you at the perfect moment. Last year, just when winter had arrived I was sitting on the train, travelling back to Hamburg after an emotional encounter. Staring out of the window and the already white landscape, Lea Porcelain’s debut album "Hymns to the night" caught me.
Their sound is the result of Markus’ strong and expressive voice and Julien’s beautiful soundscapes.

We met one sunny day at the Funkhaus in Berlin to talk about their first encounter at the Robert Johnson Club, the energy at the night, music in skate videos and of course their new song “I am Ok”.
