Happy Women's History Month!
In this episode, Leah and I want to celebrate and discuss the empowering women in the Asian American community and explore the stress they are facing. We are joined by Andrea Shen, Nancy's high school friend and now Stanford Graduate School of Business classmate who won the title of Miss Nor Cal USA and will be competing in Miss California USA soon. As we discuss different sources of stress, Andrea takes us through her experience growing up with parents with high expectations (3:04), dealing with racism as an Asian American woman in pageantry (12:17), her parents' struggle with her competing (17:30) and why she is determined to empower more Asian women in America through representation in media and entertainment (19:04).

We also discussed how parents and children can better discuss the topic of mental health through role modeling and checking in with each other (24:44). Stay tuned till the end for important lessons on balancing your priorities to alleviate your stress (30:35), making your voice heard (33:41) and how to negotiate your pay (35:26) that every woman should learn!

What are your sources of stress as an Asian woman living in America? How have you coped with it? How can this community of powerful women better support each other?

Have you ever felt guilty for complaining about how hard anything is, especially to your immigrant parents and wondered why? Have you ever been obsessed with achievement and cannot stop comparing yourself to others?

In this episode, we continued our discussion on mental health and explored our sources of stress in the context of our families' immigrant experiences.  We are joined by Angela Wang, whose mom went to Peking University with Leah and immigrated to the U.S. after 1989.  As we discuss how our parents handled stress and anxiety, we realized it's important to keep in mind the cultural and political experiences that shaped their values and beliefs today (13:36). While we all agree that the "pressure to succeed" and academic achievement is still the number one stress for the Asian community (28:00), we explored how the western idea of "grit" is ingrained in our culture as "吃苦(chi ku)“ and whether that belief is changing over time.

Why do you think we as a community care so much about achievement? Have you discussed this with your family?

High future earnings, stability, and potential for innovation make the tech companies attractive to Gen Z students, especially international students.

In this episode, we interviewed Nora and Saya, who both joined large U.S. based tech companies after a short career in consulting. They shared their experience and outlook into the industry.

Here are some key insights shared by our guests:

  1. Landing your first job is incredibly difficult (especially now) regardless of your nationality and interests, so don't be too hard on yourself if you don't get your "dream job".

  2. We know it's hard but try not to let getting a visa sponsorship, staying in the U.S. and getting a "well-paying" job be your only selection criteria when starting your career. It limits your path while searching for a first job.

  3. Compared to traditional industries and even consulting, tech industry tends to offer more opportunity for ownership, a steeper learning curve and exposure to end-to-end business operations.

What are some qualities managers and senior leadership look for in people they want to promote? Robert shared his thoughts:

1.     Who I am? What is my strategic plan and am I multi-dimensional?

2.     Just be myself is not good enough, building your career is about your personal brand which cannot be: inflexible, does not know how to interact with people outside of comfortable circle, and likes to do certain things.

3.     Look for the sustainable mentor: happen naturally, based on your performance or observation on your gaps.

4.     You can have multiple mentors, your personal board of mentors.

The spread of COVID-19 brought unprecedented challenges to new and soon-to-be graduates. Plans have been continuously changing as uncertainty continues to rise up from all directions.

In this episode, we are very fortunate to host Dr. Yunlai Zhang, Managing Director of Citigroup. He taught applied math in State University of New York at Stony Brook, and moved on to Wall Street in 1999. We have summarized some key points for you:

1.Like most of the corporate America, Wall Street look for smart, motivated, leadership and easy going. Depending on the position, traders, fund managers and bankers all have their unique requirements on skills and personalities. For example to be a trader you need to be able to get into the market while able to get out of market, meaning that you can take a break from the market to be successful.

2.Wall Street requires team work, don’t focus only on yourself during the project, but to figure out how to focus on helping your team and your boss to be more successful.

3.One day city was on fire, everyone was rushing to get their properties out of their home, one store owner made sure his families are settled and left town with some cash. One month later he came back with lumber and was one step ahead of everybody else.

4.When you are looking for jobs, you should constantly look for openings on websites, career center etc, understand the job description relating to yourself to a deep level. The first few interviews are your practices.

The Chinese community is going through a soul searching time as the tragic event of George Floyd continues to bring people out to fight against racism.

In this episode, we are very fortunate to host Lusanda Mayikana from Lake Forest Academy, Nancy's alma mater. Ms. Mayikana has been working in America for 17 years as an educator after migrating from South Africa. We have summarized some key points for you:

1.It is easy to think stereotype if you do not know people on a personal level. Making friends with people from different background is a big part of your education.

2.Be informed and educated before you form your opinion.

3.Understand the context and listen to people's stories, rather than believing in everything you see in media because each outlet has its own opinion as well

4.COVID-19 brought people together, we share the same pain. This contributes to the sympathy overwhelmingly felt across the world

5.This week we recommend this book per Ms Mayikana’s recommendation: "The other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates" by Wes Moore

The other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates" by Wes Moore

The spread of COVID-19 brought unprecedented challenges to new and soon-to-be graduates. Plans have been continuously changing as uncertainty continues to rise up from all directions.**

In this episode, we are very fortunate to host Melissa Goethals, who is assistant Director of Student Career Advising from Northwestern University, Nancy's alma mater. Melissa works with students from the start of their time at Northwestern all the way through to graduation. We have summarized some key points for you:

1. Many companies are working diligently to attract and maintain talent by moving internships and jobs remotely. Here are some sample links:

  • Intern opportunities: https://www.internfromhome.com/postings
  • LinkedIn on who is hiring: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/heres-whos-hiring-right-now-andrew-seaman/

2. Networking is not a transactional experience, but rather one that is about building relationships and learning about industry

3. Utilize career services

4. Use this time to improve your communication and language skills: join English-speaking friends, read news, and watch movies to surround yourself with the language

5. When applying, cater materials to different job requirements, and pay attention to important timelines like OPT

Melissa left us with this advice: For international students, your greatest asset is what you have that other candidates do not have; for example, adaptability.

The spread of COVID-19 brought unprecedented challenges to new and soon-to-be graduates. Plans have been continuously changing as uncertainty continues to rise up from all directions.

2. Networking is not a transactional experience, but rather one that is about building relationships and learning about industry

With internship opportunities being canceled and news of companies laying off employees due to Corvid-19, one of the concerns international students have had is how to secure a job.

In this episode (and the one after), we are very fortunate to host Leah’s dear friend/mentor, Susan, who works for the state of Ohio. Susan is a collaborator and strategist; she has been working in HR since 1989. We have summarized her top career advice:

  • Kindness attracts
  • Fear is toxic, and listening to others (without a filter) will open up your world
  • Learn about people first before you “understand” the culture
  • Plan with multiple options (redundancy)
  • People are hired for competency and fired due to character
  • Academic work is important but networking and story-telling are more crucial during college

Susan wrote to us later: overthinking the "problem" doesn't make the waiting game any better. Filling the mind with positive energy and forward thinking is pivotal. Again, times of adversity are typically temporary, especially for people focused on improving their lives, such as your students. Believe.

Welcome to “Abroad Talk”! A podcast hosted by two generations of Chinese International Students (CIS) focusing on sharing experiences, stories, information and advice around the journey of studying in the U.S. from China.

EP0 tells the story of how the project came together. The first generation CIS Leah Ma, who came to U.S. for grad school in 1991, and n generation CIS Nancy Wang, who came to U.S. for high school in 2008, got together randomly in Chicago during the mist of pandemic. To say the seemingly random friendship was “meant to be” was an understatement. The two shared a passion for education and mentoring others who share the same experiences. They hope this small project can help create a platform and eventually a community for generations of CIS to share their stories, learn from each other and support one another.
