It doesn't matter so much that you win lose or draw, what matters is that you gave it your all. Wondering "what if I gave it my all", those are the thoughts that keep us up at night. You can have peace at night being simply not 'half-assing' it. Give it your all. Go get it.

On todays Friday Fire I talk about the idea behind sharpening your ax. I think the story is to be told by Abraham Lincoln, when he said something along along the lines of, if I were to be given 6 hours to cut down a tree I would spend the first 4 hours sharpening my ax. When goal setting, I find it best to figure out the skills and the equipment needed and then focus your energy on execution. Action is certainly needed, though the tree or goal, will fall much easier and quicker with a sharpened ax or sharpened skills.

On todays Friday Fire I talk about dealing with anxiety whether it be in life or on the river. First off, recognize that we all deal with fear and anxiety at times, so it is normal. Though what we don't want to do it left that anxiety build, so let's deal with it in 2 easy steps. In regards to the river, this can be achieved by Step 1- taking it easy and walk the rapid, paddle under your skill level and remember why kayaking is fun in the first place. Step 2- once you find your flow and 'fun factor' then you can take small baby steps to push yourself again. This combination can overcome the most crippling of fears. I have dealt with depression after several concussions and it is hard when you feel lost in the darkness, though some of the tips that I talk about that helped me are getting out for exercise, trying to eat healthier, and asking for help. There are therapists that can help, or apps, or just talk with a friend, and remember just keep on going as the darkness will pass.

This is a concept I learned from Clinical Psychologist, Susannah Kindred for dealing with our nervous system when we kick into fight, flight or freeze mode. On todays Friday Fire I dive into the idea of change. If we want change if life, we need to change something. I am a huge believer of goals, and manifestation, though what is more powerful is action. If I want to lose weight, I can dream and wish about it, I can write it down in my journal, though what really needs to happen is change in my diet or exercise. I could change what I eat, how much I eat. I could change the types of exercises I do, or how much exercise I do. There are many, many ways to make change, though for there to be change we need to actually change something.

This week I had the pleasure to sit down and talk in person with arguably the Worlds greatest kayaker, Dane Jackson. We talk about Dane's recent winner at the Green Race and breaking the 4-Minute Barrier. This time limit was very much like Kayaking version of Roger Bannister breaking the 4 minute mile back in 1954. Similar to running a sub 4 minute mile, many people weren't sure if you could paddle the Green Race course in under 4 minutes. Today I got to talk with Mark Deming, the Chief Marketing Officer at NRS, as he shares the story of NRS and founder Bill Parks. Bill was a business and finance professor who took a rafting trip down the Grand Canyon that changed his life. Instead we can use something much more powerful such as identity. It is way easier to not eat meat or only eat veggies when you switch your identity to a vegetarian. On today's Friday Fire I share a story of dealing with fear and analysis paralysis. When dealing with fear our natural response is fight, flight or freeze. Though only after a deeper thought do I recognize how both fight and flight are action steps, while freezing is actually simple analysis paralysis and by definition a lack of action. I discuss ideas for dealing with this over analysis that can lead to paralysis and no action in any direction.

If you'd like to be like Gary Vaynerchuck then start putting out amount of valuable content and advice that Gary shares. The point being that all the people in the world that inspire us also leave behind a blueprint to their success. If we do our best to follow the directions they have left behind we are bound to have a taste into a similar success.

This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with David Grabiner as we talk about going from the youngest paddle on the Zambezi to building a real estate empire in Chattanooga TN. David explains how he was able to live in the Congo running a hospital while simultaneously started seeking financial freedom and build a real estate portfolio thousands of miles away in Tennessee. After buying 24 units abroad David then decided to come back to Tennessee and start scaling in a large way to 200 units plus half a million square feet in commercial real estate while still managing it all by himself. This is a great conversation filled with insight for anyone who just wants to start into real estate world or scale their portfolio into the commercial properties.

Today I dive into the concept behind the simplicity of options. It is known that the less options available the easy the decision. Imagine to yourself would you like a french fries or onion rings? I'm sure you already made a decision of one of the two, or maybe that you don't like either. Though if you have a 50 page menu of all sorts of different foods it can take forever to decide on what you want to eat, or what you're in the mood for, how hungry you are etc. We can extrapolate this concept to our busy lives and hack productivity. Pick the 5 MOST important things to do in a day, or choose less if 5 is too distracting, and start by just focusing on that. Don't get bogged down in all the 'Things to do" that’d could go on for eternity that don't need to take up thought power for today.

During today's Friday Fire I talk about how when we are creating, building or starting anything it will always go though an "ugly" period where the project doesn't look exactly like you have it imagined in your mind. This could be baking a cake, or painting a picture or starting a business, though in the early stages it is in the building/ creation phase where it doesn't always look pretty, though don't get down on yourself and more importantly don't let others put you down. Imagine if you were baking bread and you had only mixed the flour and water and someone critiqued your work saying this looks nothing like bread. If you give in or give up too early you will never create your masterpiece.

Today I got to sit down and talk with a childhood hero of mine, and one of the biggest names in the history of whitewater kayaking, Scott Lindgren. Scott has completed some of the biggest expeditions in the sport of kayaking including one of the most widely known, the Yarlung Tsangpo expedition in Tibet. Scott has also filmed and produce many of the biggest films within the sport of whitewater kayaking, like 'Good to the last Drop', 'Burning Time', and 'Black Book' to name a few. Though Scott is usually behind the lens while filming, he has recently been in front of the camera with filming the documentary of his life with Rush Sturges for the Netflix documentary, The River Runner. Scott shares his incredible story, including his vulnerabilities with dealing with his brain tumor and succumbing to the fact that somethings in life you simply can not control. This truly is an inspiring story and conversation as Scott shares some magnificent history in the sport of kayaking, along with so much more life lessons.

Today during our Friday Fire I discuss the idea of Slay the Dragons i our lives. The Dragon is whatever problem or situation you are dreading or putting off because it might be too uncomfortable or just something you don't want to do. This dragon could be paying a bill, or a conversation or a fear of something. Though the longer you put it off or avoid it the bigger the dragon grows. It is much easier to slay the dragon now before it continues to grow and get bigger by each day. The beauty of slaying the dragon is that you get the gold that the Dragon is guarding. This gold is the accomplishment you feel when you do anything that is hard or the pride you feel when you have done something that is uncomfortable. I encourage us all to slay the Dragons we all have in life, and reap the golden treasure that comes afterwards.

Have you ever made a daily 'To Do' list that is so long and daunting it seems like it would take years to complete? I know I have. Though there are a couple issues with these overwhelming 'To Do' lists, they become so daunting you continue to push it off, feeling it will never get completed, as well as the fact that it slowly down our momentum and in increases procrastination. This happens because we regularly overestimate what we can all accomplish in a day. Though at the same time we regularly underestimate what can be achieved in a decade. If you break it down to small action items daily and continue to build on your daily momentum you will achieve more then your wildest dreams within the 3650 days in that decade.

In todays Friday Fire I explain that life isn't fair, sometimes you get the big break, and sometimes you don't. Thats just how it goes. Though remember, it's easy to criticize someone else for their big break, though do you criticize yourself when you win, when you get lucky or when you get the big break? Probably not. We all usually wrap up our success as hard work, as we know the work put in, though we don't always see the hard work other put in when we consider them lucky. Also don't get too caught up in the 'Big Breaks' as there we are all given plenty of small breaks that we all too often take for granted.

Today I had the absolute pleasure to talk with the Owner of Strider bikes and founder of the All Kids Bike Foundation, Ryan McFarland. Ryan likes to tinker with projects, which is actually how he started creating a balance bike for his 2 year old son. After the balance bike getting a ton of attention he thought maybe there is some demand for a product like this, which turned into the global success of Strider Bikes. Ryan talks about focus and sticking with what you are good at and where you're needed. When Ryan heard about the shocking numbers of decline in children learning to ride bikes, he took it upon himself to boil down the problem to the simplest solution, which was to get biking into the public school eduction system. Ryan started the All Kids Bike Foundation which teaches kindergarten and Grade 1 students to learn how to ride a bike during PE class. It has been a great success so far as they are currently implemented in almost ever state across the country which massive potential and wide reaching impacts. This was an incredible conversation and Ryan dropped so many knowledge bombs that I’m sure you will gain some value from listening and walk away with several nuggets of gold.

I was recently picking something up off the floor and was reminded about the quote by Dwane Dyer "if you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change". Instantly my whole perception of the room was different since I was looking at it from ground level. This was a great reminder of how we can all look at and solve problems easier and more effectively by simply changing our perspective. 'priorities', up until that point it had been singular and stated that there is only one thing that is the single most important. I dive deep into trying to find the single most important part of each day and how multitasking can be ineffective. I also express that this focus or lack there of, has been something that I personally have struggled with for years, and how I am coming to terms with it. Could it possibly be that we are currently living in the matrix right now?

Would you ever accept a race where you didn't know the finish line? ... Hmmm.... maybe?
Though stop and think about it, could you even really race without knowing the finish? You wouldn't know what pace to go at, or how long it would even take. You could be committing yourself to something that could take all day, or all year, or a decade, or a lifetime. You can only see 20 ft ahead, though as you keep driving the road unveils itself 20ft at a time. Sometimes you just need to take action and know that it is ok if you don't have all the answers or vision right now, but with action you will start and only after starting will the ideas and opportunities unveil themselves.

Newton's first law of motion states that an object at rest remains at rest and an object in motion remains in motion with the same velocity unless acted upon by what we call an unbalanced force.
Today we talk about the power of MOMENTUM. Whenever you do anything in life it is the start that is the hardest as you have to go from an object at rest and start building steam and momentum in the direction of your goals and dreams. Though just like the ferris wheel, once you get moving momentum will take into effect and start propelling you in your desired direction and it will take less and less effort as you build up more and more speed towards your goals.
