The „Something Basketball“ podcast is for all the international listeners out there who are interested in what‘s going on basketball-wise in Europe and/or Germany.
The concept is to conduct a series of interviews with players, coaches, executives, etc. that are willing to share their thoughts on what it‘s like as a pro far away from home. Rookies, give me an idea of what you know about the german league, who you reached out to beforehand, what you might be afraid of prior to year one. Vets, spread your wisdom on the overseas culture, the level of the league and what helped you have a lasting career.
So könnte auch ein schlechter Witz beginnen: Treffen sich zwei Kerle am See, um einen Spaziergang zu machen. Der eine hat Rücken, der andere eine laufende Nase, beide sind in Plauderlaune. Und so drehen wir ganz gemütlich eine Runde um den Hengsteysee, wo wir zwischendurch ein, zwei Mal anhalten müssen, um uns mit anderen Passanten zu unterhalten. Der nach Berlin ausgewanderte Pletzinger ist in seiner Heimat Hagen immer willkommen, bekannt wie ein bunter Hund, und außerdem mit ehrlicher Neugierde gesegnet an seinen Mitmenschen interessiert. Was eine gute Grundvoraussetzung ist, wenn du eine Dokumentation drehen willst. Und so sprechen wir während eben jenem Spaziergang kurz vor dem Jahreswechsel, eine Hand am Audiorekorder, eine in der wärmenden Jackentasche, genau darüber: Über The Wagner Bros. … und wie sehr sich Zufälle planen lassen … wie sehr sich als Beobachter historische Momente wie der Gewinn einer Weltmeisterschaft überhaupt genießen lassen. Aber auch über Themen, die nichts mit Basketball zu tun haben. Bailey Mackenzie, who‘s husband Brock signed his first pro contract with german 2nd division team Hagen during the summer of 2023 after strong showings in college for Point Loma and Idaho State, is a strong woman. She was super open to the idea of reflecting on the process of making the decision to go overseas as a couple, staying independent as a remote worker, and eventually having kids down the road.
Cameron Wells ('88, G) has come a long way. After attending The Citadel he turned pro in 2011, suffered a major knee injury early in his career, and developed into a legit MVP candidate in Germany. Sharing his views and opening speaking about how to find your niche overseas, we ultimately end up discussing travel destinations.

Cameron Wells (G, s.Oliver Würzburg) has mastered the rare-to-find midrange game. It's a lost art these days, but it's one that grew within the Citadel Alumni from the early pickup games in the driveway at home.

The Egypt native left his home country as a teenager in order to follow his dream and attend College. More of a traditional big who likes playing with his back to the basket, the 27 year-old nowadays works on adding a new quality to his (midrange) game.

Very rarely foreign players spend their entire career with one club. Here comes Quantez Robertson, swingman for the FRAPORT SKYLINERS. He‘s a lefty, he‘s able to defend at least three, if not four positions. He has a knack for shoes. Unfortunately I did not include Shoes into our Triple Threat credo ... Pete Strobl serves as Headcoach with the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig - yes, that‘s the program where both Dennis Schröder and Daniel Theis made their pro debuts as teenagers. Strobl served as an assistant for ratiopharm ulm the past three years and takes over the helm in Braunschweig on a 2+1 year contract.

In basketball everybody knows the triple threat position. Shoot - Pass - Dribble. In our case we‘ll go with Summer - Professionalism, and Destinations as keywords for the conversation with Mr. William Hatcher, who happened to start off his career in 2006 for my hometown team Dragons Rhöndorf in 2nd division.
The Flint, Michigan native went on to have an illustrous career path that led him to an overall ten countries in thirteen years - Germany, Romania, Czech, Cyprus, Israel, Greece, France, Belgium, Serbia, and bella Italia. Having spent the previous three years showcasing his talents on both the domestic level as well as in Basketball Champions League, Hatcher signed with Peristeri from Greece over the summer, which will allow him to play in the highest ranked FIBA competion for a fourth consecutive time.
