They consider how trans characters in these instances are portrayed, the importance of trans representation, and what some scholars have to say about the subject.
"Hook, Line, and Queerbaiter" is chock-full of pop-culture references that help to increase the accessibility of queerbaiting. By identifying the queerbaiting that occurs in Sherlock, Supernatural, Pitch-Perfect, and the Harry Potter series, this podcast examines how these franchises profit off of teasing queerness and ultimately exploit the need for representation without actually fulfilling that need in a meaningful way.

So it's no secret that gaming online can be a really toxic, and playing online as a woman or a person of color comes with the hazard of ten year olds targeting you for that. There's plenty of evidence of this kind of griefing online, but what can be done? Systemic overhaul of the problematic culture around gaming? Turning off voicechat? No... clearly the only effective solution is hunting the bullies down. Bully Hunters was a failed venture launched earlier this month that claimed to shut down "bullies" is CS:GO via an elite hit squad of vigilante female gamers. During an error-ridden, cringe-y livestream, Bully Hunters showed off how they'd shut down bullies "at their own game" by targeting and taking them down in-game. Bully Hunters has since shut down after a relentless onslaught of criticism: fighting fire with fire is dumb, the campaign used inaccurate and misleading statistics and it did more harm than good to female gamers. Where do we go from here? Was there a right way to do bully hunting? How can gaming be made less toxic? Is this cyber bullying? What can be done to avoid/shut down cyber bullying? We've got to talk about the problem with Apu, specifically the recent Simpsons episode that address the yearlong debacle with Apu being called out as an out-dated, racist stereotype of a character that either needs to be updated or ousted. We all know Apu: he's the Indian guy who owns the convenience store who's voiced by a white dude doing an Indian accent. In the new episode, the show addresses that this went unquestioned in the 90s, where as now it's framed as politically incorrect. But hey, what're you gonna do? Don't have a cow about it. Is this the right attitude to take up? Is this an issue of political correctness or that the Simpsons haven't evolved past their 90's heyday? Should things that are old be excused for their faux pas? (note that this episode came out this year) Is Apu an example of casual racism? It's telling that those arguing for his being a offense are actually Indian-American or Asian-America, while those saying to calm down are white. How should shows evolve overtime? Should they? Marley's secret is out, Nikki is angrier than ever, Sunshine is somewhere in the shadows consorting with powerful demons, and he could get kicked out of Aisling... but all that turns out to be the least of his worries.
Nikki, Marley, and the newly unveiled Fauster reluctantly team up to try to help Sunshine before the campus goes to hell.
There's something demonic at Aisling... and it's not just Fauster, who is getting a little nervous about Marley's choice in friends. Nikki, heir to a monster hunting empire, has enlisted Marley as her partner. For hunting demons. Fauster finds humor in this, even if Marley doesn't.
Marley finally leaves the safety of the dorms alongside Nikki to investigate the demonic sigils on campus.
Marley has managed to keep Fauster a secret... so far. He's on his way to deciding his future at Aisling, his dream come true. However, not everyone is having such a good time. Sunshine, queen of darkness and sass, isn't so happy with the majors Declan suggested she choose from.
Marley's never had friends, so he's trying to be the best one he can. That might be a little difficult with Sunshine's demon obsession and Nikki's zeal for hunting them.

Fantastically Mundane is an original radio drama produced by byte. Through writing, audio editing, and voice acting we tell the tale of Aisling University of Arcane Studies’ four most awkward misfits and their adventures in magic, demons, and social anxiety.
In this episode we meet Marley, an inept and awkward wizard who by some miracle got into Aisling, the best school for magic in the world. His miracle turned out to be more of a curse. The demon Marley summoned, Fauster, is now Marley's annoying, and permanent, roommate inside his head. Marley has to work hard to keep his secret, find his place at Aisling, and insist to his friends that he is not crazy.

Perhaps due to the current, heated political climate there's the recent trend of YouTubers boiling over in their own respective controversies.
The two that The Coven discusses on this episode are PewDiePie and JonTron.
PewDiePie made international headlines after his video featuring the message, "death to all Jews." He meant this as a joke, right? Have the media blown this situation out of proportion? His video, lack of apology, general attitude, and content as of late has divided YouTube into those who side with him and those who don't. This was a scandal that reached beyond his current audience and has attracted an alt-right following to him.
What happened with JonTron is much more recent and not nearly as prolific, but very similar to PewDiePie's spiral. Recently he had a debate, in which he expressed some nationalist viewpoints and worrying quotes on his right-leaning views on immigration. In his statement video on the debate, he reaffirmed some ideas while defending others.
JonTron, with less of a following than PewDiePie, has lost over ten thousand subscribers and a voice acting appearance in the Yooka-Laylee video game.
What happening to our YouTubers? YouTubers enjoy the freedom of having an essentially uncensored platform in which they can say whatever they want. But should they say whatever they want? Do they have a responsibility to their, often young, audience to avoid inflammatory comments?

Quick: think of a transgender video game character. You'll probably be pondering that for a while, because in gaming, trans characters are few and far between.
When there is representation - trans characters are reduced down to being "trap" jokes or are wrongly interpreted as being trans. Their creators didn't mean for them to be anything but "quirky."
When creators consciously create a transgender character, as seen when Amber Scott wrote Baldur's Gate: Siege of Drangonspear, included a four line dialogue with a blink-and-you'll miss them transwoman, things get complicated. People riot online, complain about SJWs, and make violent videos.
Anime invented the trans trap joke, but has a more prolific history of telling stories about transgender characters and handling them fairly well. Comics try to, and sometimes fail to properly represent the people they're writing about.
This week is Transgender Awareness Week, and November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Take an opportunity to give this podcast a listen and reflect on how our favorite nerdy media represents trans folk.

The Coven gathers to stir up the cauldron of issues surrounding women in the comics industry, especially with the Chelsea Cain situation.
It's already obvious that the lion's share of caped crusaders or masked heroes are male - so it's no surprise when we find that there aren't many ladies writing comics. Unfortunately, where we can find examples of women working in comics they're often harassed on Twitter, another thing we've come to expect, and sexually harassed in their own workplace.
The comics industry continually proves itself to be a dangerous place for women: they might be threatened with rape online, bitten in their office, or fired because men doing the harassing and biting can't control themselves.
Share in our shock and outrage at the current state of women in comics and rejoice in how far we've come in terms of diversity in one of our favorite nerdy medias.
But mostly be scared of Bitey the Clown.
On their premiere episode, the Deadbeat Club gets together to have an album book club, a cozy podcast where they discuss the album of the week: The Ultrasounds' Give Up The Fight.

On our first interview special of the year, we sit down with the artist Joseph DeLappe, who created Killbox, a game meant to make the player think about the consequences of drone warfare.
Killbox "[creates] a challenging interactive experience with a computer game, which is symbolically connected with the controls of a drone pilot, which are being made to resemble Xbox controllers."
Killbox has been selected for IndieCade, the international festival of independent games, and will also be shown at Scotland's digital art festival NeoN.
