Member's Talk by Kimball Jones (Won Joong Shim) April 2, 2023https://wonbuddhismnyc.org/
This year, practitioners at the North Carolina Temple are focusing their study on "Doctrine" from the "The Scripture of the Founding Master." Long time practitioner, Michael Macklin (HyoungSan), introduces us to Won Buddhism's essential teachings, which knit together Śākyamuni Buddha's instruction with the truth of Il-Won-Sang (one circle image).https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
What, exactly, is Won Buddhism, and how does it contribute to the lives of sentient beings? We already have great religions like Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. Rev. WonGong of the North Carolina Temple elucidates how Won Buddhism synthesizes the best parts of these wisdom traditions into the "Threefold Practice" of Cultivation, Inquiry, and Choice in Action. See just how Il-Won, one circle, symbolizes this practice into a wholistic, "...great Way that reaches everywhere."https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
What, exactly, is a "DahnJon" (Dantien) and how can it vitalize our meditation? Rev. WonGong translates this Asian concept into a concrete practice that helps us burn our abundant thought-wood in the fireplace of our breathing steam engines.https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
In this wonderfully dynamic dharma talk, Won Buddhist practitioner, Tiffany Heath (Won Dwok Hwa) describes how the Four Great Bodhisattva Vows help her to fully be open and present in her work on behalf of others and not entangled by judging a world she is helping to heal. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Member's Talk by Steve Hadcock (October 23, 2022) https://wondharmacenter.org/
For some practitioners, a focus on the discipline of practice may cause deep spiritual joy to seem elusive. But, in this encouraging dharma talk, Rev. WonGong breaks through such self-created barriers. She reflects on the many facets of joy that humans experience – from the fleeting to the profound – and shares her perspectives about the source and power of spiritual joy. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Dharma Talk by Rev. WonGong (October 9, 2022) https://wondharmacenter.org/ https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/
In this beautiful and seasonal dharma talk, Rev. WonGong invites us to embrace early autumn’s balance of yin and yang in our practice and in our lives. She encourages us to abide in the harmonious energies of warmth and coolness, and to be like autumn trees – letting go of what is no longer useful so that we can experience vast spaciousness. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Many people think emotions "just happen," but long-time practitioner, Rebecca Kameny (WonHee), describes the distinct ways sentient beings, bodhisattvas, and buddhas become masters or servants of their emotions. Interwoven into this is an exploration about how emotions are experienced and identified across cultures. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
The newest Kyomunim to join to the North Carolina Temple, Rev. Shaun, relates his surprising journey from the birthplace on Won Buddhism in Korea, to the Chapel Hill community. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
What does it mean "to train the ox of our mind?" Nik Wall (Won HaeWol), deftly explores some answers to that question by guiding us through two verses from the famous Buddhist allegory of practice, The 10 Oxherding Pictures. This talk focuses on a point midway in our practice journey, when we balance between holding onto our mind with discipline and letting it roam free. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations

Asking Rev. WonGong if she has ever "...achieved oneness through meditation?" brings an enthusiastic "Yes!" So, how does this experience of oneness differ from employing mind-altering psychedelics? One's aspiration may be key. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
In her reflective talk, practitioner Holly North (Won JahYoo) describes how she found grace and opportunity during the days she spent in covid quarantine at home. What at first seemed daunting reshaped itself into a gift of time and space when she brought a variety of meditation practices into her newfound solitude. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Dharma Talk by Rev. Hojin Park (August 7, 2022)
https://wondharmacenter.org/
Koan contemplation practice can seem daunting to some of us, but in this bright, friendly dharma talk, longtime practitioner, Patty Daniel (Won EunHaeHwa), delves right in! With helpful information and insight born from experience, Patty opens the way for us to explore this important and useful meditation practice. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Facemasks have become a hot topic in recent years, and in this clear-sighted dharma talk, Rev. WonGong uses them as a vehicle for exploring the layers of conditioning that shapes our mind. As our understanding grows, so does compassion for ourselves and others. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
In her deeply reflective dharma talk, long-time practitioner, Lara Olson (Won LaSon) unflinchingly looks at the concept of evil through Buddhist eyes. Peeling through layers of culture and self-doubt, she reveals how despair is actually self-aggression, while reverence aligns with the sacred and has the power of liberation. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
We can observe "Defilements and idles thoughts" in our every-day lives. Rev. ZiYoung describes how the Founding Master told a follower perplexed by this mind that, “The myriad dharmas return to one; to what does the one return?” What does this mean, and how can it possibly help us in our every-day lives? https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Restoring the great energy of the universe within us – What a beautiful practice! Rev. WonGong shares with us how the power of sky, earth, fellow beings, and meditation restored her essential life force energy. She then instructs us on how we can do the same. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
From birth our experience is one of dualism - inside/outside, me/you, etc.. Where, then, is nonduality in our existence? In a conversational way, Michael Macklin (Won Hyoung) tackles nonduality, a brave act since, as many assert, it is something "beyond words and speech." https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Dharma Talk by Rev. Jo (June 19, 2022) @Won Dharma Center
Our minds are both powerful and subtle, and in this reflective dharma talk, Rev. WonGong considers how mindfulness impacts the trajectory of cause and effect in our lives. Cultivating our mind is crucial, and she encourages us to practice by doing something as simple as taking one calm and focused step after another. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Through the lens of koan contemplation, longtime Won Buddhist practitioner, Nate Jackson (Won JaySun) explores a topic in this inviting dharma talk that some of us find daunting: reincarnation. Using curiosity to probe his own mind, Nate shares how the results of his exploration created space for a new awareness, healing, and appreciation. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Do your actions always align with your wishes? This is the question Won Buddhist practitioner, Paige Doster-Grimes, explores in this bright and clear dharma talk. Using the curiosity of children as inspiration, she shows us how answering that question can aid our practice. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
The modern-day Buddha, Sotaesan, was a person who showed everyone how to become Buddhas, and how to recognize everything as a Buddha offering in our every-day, modern lives. Rev. ZiYoung celebrates June 1st, the day the Founding Master entered nirvana, with a powerful testimony of just how Ven. Sotaesan gifted the world the path to enlightenment via the power of the Threefold Study, and the Eight Articles, the Fourfold Grace, and the Four Essentials. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Does the path to your true nature seem blocked by lifetimes of karmic gunk? Practitioners looking for a way through will find hope in this enlightening dharma talk by Rev. WonGong. Focusing on the Buddhist theory of Nine Consciousnesses, she shows us how the levels of our mind intertwine to create obstacles, and she gives guidance on how to release those obstacles and abide in pure consciousness, our true nature. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Sometimes it is difficult to see ourselves as living buddhas, and this challenge is exactly what Won Buddhist practitioner, Brian Adams (Won SeongDeok) explores is this helpful dharma talk. He guides us through Master ChongSan’s “5 Steps to Enlightenment” and shows us how these practical steps guide our awakening, which is what we are doing, wherever we are in our practice journey. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
In this perceptive dharma talk, Rev. WonGong explores a specific challenge we humans encounter when we work together: When things get complicated, do we lean towards kindness or insist on being right? Through her real-life examples, Rev. WonGong shows us how our choice impacts those around us and can grow or hinder our own spiritual development as well. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Kathleen Herr of the North Carolina Temple takes us on an open and vulnerable journey, describing her current practice as one best defined by the term, "middle spiritual capacity." In this space, enlightenment can seem far away and unattainable. Kathleen assures us that no matter the form, enlightenment is just as here and now as a daffodil is a daffodil before it blooms - even when it's a bulb! The lack of yellow petals doesn't mean the daffodil bulb isn't what it is, and Kathleen's wise insight details how we can recognize enlightenment for what it actually is. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Dharma Talk by Rev. Insik (April 24, 2022) @Won Dharma Center https://wondharmacenter.org/
In this understated talk, Michael Macklin (Won Hyoung) of the North Carolina Temple, is ambivalent calling Master Sotaesan's very modern-day enlightenment experience a "story." Listen to learn how we, as fellow practitioners, can not only benefit from Master Sotaesan's hard-earned wisdom, but can become enlightened ourselves! https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Rev. WonGong generously shares the wisdom she has learned from living amongst pine trees in this poignant dharma talk. She skillfully weaves together lessons about resilience and acceptance from her life experiences both in Asia, and here, in the West. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
In this personal and reflective dharma talk, Won Buddhist practitioner and Christian, Mattie Decker (Won BubJon) of the North Carolina Temple, explores how we can fully and unambiguously embrace all the spiritual traditions in our lives. By opening our minds and hearts to a broader perspective, we will find a richness of spiritual diversity that is ready to support us on our journey. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
In this thoughtful dharma talk, Won Buddhist practitioner, Holly North (Won JahYoo) explores how understanding cause and effect can help us transform ourselves and our world. By weaving the Won Buddhist principle of Mindful Choice in Action into her everyday life, she shows us how empowering this practice can be. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Member's Talk by Kathy (March 27, 2022) @ Won Dharma Center https://wondharmacenter.org/
Is it possible to be a warrior for peace? This is the question Rev. WonGong explores in this compelling and pertinent dharma talk. Through her insight, we learn that wholeheartedly cultivating equanimity and wisdom prepares us to help bring peace to the world and ourselves with calmness, fortitude, and agility. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
Dharma Talk by Rev. Yoon Kim (March 20, 2022) Note from Rev. Yoon: It was my one of my first time having English talk in front of so many people, so I blanked out and put out the wrong information. As far as I remember, Buddha was born in Nepal. Sorry for the confusion.
The path to Buddhahood may seem far-off, but in this hopeful and clear-sighted dharma talk, Rev. ZiYoung of the North Carolina Temple removes the mystery and shows us how we already are walking along that path. When guided by our beginner's mind and our pure heart, we find ourselves in the good company of all Buddhas journeying together. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
With emotion and deep wisdom, Rev. WonGong reminds us that we all have the seeds of compassion and Buddhahood within us. She describes how "Buddha" and "Bodhisattva" are synonyms and their application melt away the three poisons of greed, anger, and delusion. All of this can be realized by letting our own little lights shine, no matter how small each little flame may appear to be. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/donations
In this unique dharma talk, Won Buddhist practitioner, Pete Warshaw (Won Jee Ho) of the North Carolina Temple, weaves together photography and poetry to reveal how our minds create the universes we inhabit. While our mind can create limitations and obstacles that hinder us, our mind also can be a co-creator of beauty and insight that helps us unfold our buddha nature. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
With clarity and care, Won Buddhist practitioner Daniel Mattingly explores the meaning of wholehearted practice in this dharma talk and shows us how to make the seemingly impossible possible. He points out that while we do not have to believe we can achieve supreme enlightenment to make progress on our spiritual path, aspiring to perfect buddhahood will make a huge difference and help us to achieve much greater success. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
With openness and reflection, Rev. WonGong shares one of Won Buddhism’s key insights: Our spiritual paths spring from and journey towards a single source. No matter where we begin or what traditions we explore, every tradition can help light our path towards peace, wellbeing, and liberation. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Dharma Talk by Rev. Insun Park (Feb/06/2022) https://wonbuddhismnyc.org/ https://www.woninstitute.edu/
In this soul-searching dharma talk, practitioner Jared Heelis (Won Jae Ryong) uses his own spiritual journey to illustrate how our “I know” mind and “I don’t know” mind powerfully shape our lives and practice. Jared shows us that when we shift from the absolute to the formless, we too can step into the spacious practice of watching our mind and heart. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Dharma Talk by Rev. Dosung Yoo (Jan/23/2022) @wondharmacenter https://wondharmacenter.org/
An enlightened buddha sees the world from a nondual lens, but for many of the rest of us, nonduality can seem abstract at best. In this dharma talk, longtime practitioner, Kathleen Herr (Won HerrJu) points out how familiar nondual experiences infuse our everyday lives, and as flecks of ultimate Truth, they can illuminate our spiritual path. — The Scripture of the Founding Master Chapter Seven: The Principle of the Nature verse 7 http://wonscripture.org/Main/SubIndex/daejong0707 https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Rev. ZiYoung opens the door of clarity in this enlightening dharma talk about “No-Self.” As Rev. Kang explores the question, “Who am I?”, she examines the layers of delusion we often have about “self” that invariably cause us to suffer, and she encourages us to release them to reveal our true nature: numinous awareness. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Sometimes, gifts come to us in unexpected ways. In this very introspective and vulnerable dharma talk, Rev. WonGong uses an unanticipated gift in her life as a touchstone to explore the power and practice of speech. With the precepts as guides, she invites us to consider ways for our speech to become mindful acts of gentleness and peace. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
In this insightful dharma talk, long-time practitioner, Michael Macklin (Won Hyoung) thoughtfully guides listeners through the key Won Buddhist teaching, The Truth of Il-Won Sang. As he highlights and explores the essential elements of this teaching, its inter-relationships are more brightly revealed, like a "…jewel in hand;" [http://wonscripture.org/Main/SubIndex/jungjun020101] https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Through her thoughtful and gentle reflection of a year at its end, Rev. WonGong of the North Carolina Temple honors the grace of the many sentient beings who have shared her life’s path, as well as the spacious moments she experienced in meditation and the tangible world. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
In this fascinating dharma talk, Rev. ZiYoung deftly compares the push and pull of magnets to the push and pull of our discriminating mind. Our judgments act like magnets that grasp and repel people and ideas; and when we release these polarized forces, our mind opens into all-embracing freedom, and our suffering ends. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
As we enter the last days of the year, Rev. WonGong invites us to explore the joys of simplified living. With clear thought and by example, she shows us that when we declutter our living spaces and our minds, we can follow in the footsteps of sages and teachers who released what entangled them and found freedom. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
With keen observation, Won Buddhist practitioner, Nate Jackson (Won JaySon), points out how an imbalance of the spiritual and material in our lives blocks our ability to be at peace with ourselves and the world. His journey writing a dharma talk is an invitation to join him on a journey of self-compassion - a medicine that can free us to release our self-critical mind. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Rev. WonGong of the North Carolina Temple begins this prayerful meditation on gratitude with a reflection on Ven. SeungSan, a leader of Won Buddhism in Korea, who passed a few days ago. Deep gratitude for fellow beings extends not only to those we venerate, but also those who challenge us. Rev. WonGong reminds us that, "We are what we think, we are what we say, we are what we chant." https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Rev. WonGong of the North Carolina Temple shares the profound message we see in falling autumn leaves, that of "…drop, release, let go." People are like autumn leaves, individual and unique, yet all subject to the swirling winds of cause and effect. Like falling leaves we can let go and "go with the flow" of life. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
In this talk, Paula Sims (Won ShimJin) of the North Carolina Temple, takes us on a gentle journey in which she shares with us how prayer and gratitude has shaped her spiritual life. Paula describes how true prayer is much more than words, and how one-pointedness of mind developed through prayer can help us savor the joyfulness of gratitude. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org

Practice of Gratitude - Ven. Chung Ohun Lee https://youtu.be/uPQ06lZ2RWU
In this guided meditation, Rev. WonGong of the North Carolina Temple both elaborates upon, and also focuses the mind, to become aware of the Fourfold Grace here and now. http://wonscripture.org/Main/SubIndex/jungjun020201 Join her in surrendering to this grace which is so pervasive, like oxygen, that it may be under the radar in the midst of the busy and distracted now. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
In this delightful dharma talk, Rev. WonGong So explores the topic, "a mind that responds but does not abide anywhere." Through the versatile lenses of poetry, stories, Buddhist teachings, and wifi settings, she turns something that might seem esoteric into an accessible subject for contemplation. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
On this beautiful November day in the month of gratitude, Rev. WonGong of the North Carolina Temple leads a guided meditation of gratitude, healing and peace. You are invited to sit quietly with our universal dharma community, resting in the still point of this present moment with the mantra, "I am grateful. All is grace." https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
With a full heart Rev. WonGong expresses her deep gratitude for those who sustain the North Carolina Temple through monthly donations. She details how this community has been supported by hard-earned funds that came from minimum wage and odd jobs, to her intention to invest in the future by creating an endowment. Please consider making a contribution here: https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Rev. WonGong of the North Carolina Temple gives us an open and honest assessment of the quality of her own practice in this dharma talk. She has come to realize that measuring one's meditation practice can be as simple as observing just how many thoughts cary our minds away (the fewer the better). Rev. WonGong presents practical ways we can achieve a good quality meditation practice. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Member's Talk by Douglas Conkling @ Won Dharma Center October 17, 2021 https://wondharmacenter.org/
Rebecca Kameny (Won Hee), a member of the North Carolina Temple, explores the human experience of disappointment and how it can block us from experiencing equanimity. Using thoughtful examples, she shows how the Threefold Practice can help us navigate our way out of the tangle of disappointments we sometimes create for ourselves. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Rev. WonGong of the North Carolina Temple explains how the healthiest tree in the garden, an Arborvitae, is the one that is close to a water tap. Proximity to a popular resource insures this evergreen gets lots of loving attention, and it flourishes because of this. Temple practitioners can likewise nourish each other by meeting together, calling or texting. "We are one, we are whole." https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/
In her Dharma talk, Rev. ZiYoung, Kyomunim at the North Carolina Temple, reflects on Buddhadharma in everyday life and discovers that Buddhadharma already 'is' everyday life! We can recognize this fact by "Requiting the Graces with One Mind" as explained by Master Daesan. Rev. ZiYoung gives us personal examples of what it means to requite graces and come to see, for ourselves, the inherent wholeness of universal principles encapsulated in Il-Won-Sang. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Pete Warshaw (Won JeeHo), a member of the North Carolina Temple, discusses the reasons for and path taken in updating Won Buddhism's entry in Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Won_Buddhism). Pete emphasizes that updating and clarifying this important resource is a community effort, and he also reminds us that many current practitioners were introduced to Won Buddhism through small windows in the online world. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Won_Buddhism
Desi Adams (Won JaIn), a visiting practitioner from the Philadelphia Temple, shares her experience engaging in a very personal aspiration, one with which so many of us can relate, which is refraining from interrupting others when they are speaking. Changing habits is not a trivial process. Desi found wisdom in The Scripture of the Founding Master, Chapter Three: Practice, verse 30 (http://wonscripture.org/Main/SubIndex/daejong0330). She has come to know that, while not easy, changing habits is a mind activity made easier via solid practice steps carried out over a looooong time, as Desi clearly explains in this motivational talk. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org http://wonbuddhismpa.org
Brain Adams (Won SungDeok), a visiting practitioner from the Philadelphia Temple, shares his experience with chanting in the Won Buddhist tradition. His initial apprehension melted away during a retreat when he discovered what he calls "…the sincerity of whole-hearted chanting." Brian's chanting practice really took off, however, when a Kyomunim suggested he chant from his "Dan Jeon" ("Dantian" 단전 - 丹田 or "elixir field" just below the navel). When the mind drops away, and there is a union of the body and the mind, "one-pointed mind" in chanting can arise. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org http://wonbuddhismpa.org
In a very personal reflection of her own experience dealing with the possibility of being a Covid carrier herself, Rev. WonGong expands upon this one single contemporary fear, to discriminatory thoughts in general, their genesis, and practice for resolving thoughts that smother love and compassion for others. Compassion is innate to human beings, but obscured by "…fear, anxiety, and insecurity, to defend and protect our sense of self…" Rev. WonGong details the specific practice that melts away the "four false notions that come from distorted thinking" and helps lead us to the loveing kindness about which Master Sotaesan refers to in the scriptures (http://wonscripture.org/Main/SubIndex/daejong0802).
Lara Olson (Won LaSon) investigates her own day-to-day experience recognizing judgmental thought so easily engaged in erroneously labeling other people. This mind may actually be reflecting the nurturer and nature of the observer in a way familiar to the person actively exercising the discriminating mind. Lara provides tips on revealing the underlying ego that informs this judgmental mind. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/
Visiting Reverend Shaun Song (Won SiJoong), details his journey toward true nature in this vulnerable and relatable message that brings hope to all of us in our path to self understanding and enlightenment. Mentors and situations are everywhere lighting the way when we look at what this reflected light reveals. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/
Patty details her path toward a practice that is both introspective and skeptical, and one that has led her to a brand of "spiritualism" that is not in conflict with science and what she experiences here in the every-day world. Here, disparate people meet in a sangha and dharma of mutual service and "…a religion based on truth and a training in morality based on facts." (Master Sotesan, The Founding Motive of the Teaching) http://wonscripture.org/Main/SubIndex/jungjun010100
In this Dharma talk, Rev. ZiYoung shares the key to bringing peace to the world starts with cultivating peace in our own mind-field. An easier way to say this is, "Oneness" and is our prayerful chant in the words, "We Are One, We Are Whole." https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Kelly Denno (Won YeeSuh), shares an all too familiar experience when interconnectedness is not safe, being tailgated. Practice and the scriptures reminds us that it is important to be equitable and kind to everyone, even those who don't look like they deserve it in certain critical moments. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
In this Dharma talk Rev. ZiYoung explains in a literal way, how our delusions cloud our sight, much like how our eyesight can be limited by restricting the light that enters one of our eyes with our hand. Limiting ourselves prevents us from clearly seeing great ant small, being and nonbeing, and Rev. ZiYoung's personal experience with team members illustrates this in a vivid way. https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org
Kathleen Herr (Won HerrJu) shares a deeply personal message about becoming "lassoed" by checklist "have-to's" at the expense of meaningful and fundamental practices. Nik Wall (WonHaeWol), a member of the North Carolina Temple, shares his thoughts on practicing mindfully as a way to loosen "thought knots" that occur in our minds. In her special 911 anniversary message, Rev. WonGong shares a message of healing and wholeness by comparing our lives to that of the lotus flower. Master Chōngsan wisely encouraged his followers to practice like the lotus in this new world (http://wonscripture.org/Main/SubIndex/jeangsan021116)

Rev. She dives deep into ways we can cultivate these powers by referring to the scriptures and wise teachers, like Master ChōngSan, who saw that these powers involve accumulation and utilization. Rev. WonGong assures us that we can develop equanimity, inquiry, and mindful choice because "Who got the power? …You got the power!" https://www.wonbuddhismnc.org/
