Transitioning from professional sport in to another career. Athletes have transferable skills which are suited to other industries and organisations and not just sport. A lot of athletes and industry leaders aren’t aware of this. I aim to spread the message by having conversations with former athletes that have made the transition, they will tell their story. I will also use my personal experience having made a seamless transition from professional sport.

There’s no right or wrong way to make the transition; it’s important that you do what’s right for you, follow your own path. Good luck!

I recently had a conversation with Trystan Finocciaro who is a professional motorcycle racer.

I have no clue about this sport so it was great to get a bit of an insight in to the life of a motorcycle racer. Trystan believes that studying, commentary and writing among other interests within the sport keep him focused whilst acting as a perfect distraction which I think is a great attitude to have.

Had a great conversation with Jon Fortune. Jon had a great career playing football for Chartlon Athletic, Stoke City and Sheffield Utd.

In this podcast we spoke about his career as a footballer, retirement and how he used his transferable skills to help him make the transition in to the world of business.

He has now successfully set up a sports and lifestyle agency called Two Touch Agency which is designed to look after young athletes. It was good to hear that this company not only sources young talent and assists their on-field affairs but also looks after them off the field and has a keen interest in their wellbeing. He is using his knowledge and experience within football to aid the development of young athletes.

During the 80’s and 90’s Kriss was one of, if not the best sprint and hurdling track and field athlete.

It was amazing to get an insight in to his childhood, how he coped with being at the top of the world of athletics, the medals that he won and life after sport. Kriss makes some good points regarding what can be done to assist athletes when it comes to retirement.

Enjoyed catching up with former teammate Trevor Benjamin @trevbenj today. He has played for various clubs such as Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Norwich. He has also represented England at U21 level and the full Jamaica national team.

I enjoyed listening to how he made the transition from sport to another career, and the steps that he took to achieve that. He is now running not one but two successful companies, one that deals with cleaning and maintenance and the other being a football academy for kids.

Again there is no right or wrong way when it comes to transitioning from sport. Trevor decided to start a cleaning company whilst still playing football.

As an athlete sometimes retirement can be seen as something negative. It’s not, it’s just the beginning of something new.
